I propose we reward those who quit with weed. :PHead_of_gamesI would quit in a heartbeat

This. If people can afford $15+ for a packet of smokes a day, then a tax break won't help.
Where do you live that its 15+ dollars for a pack of cigs. I spend around 4 dollars a pack where I live (Nevada)Nah, the population is getting big enough as it is. Smoking is helping keep those numbers a little bit lower
I propose we reward those who quit with weed. :PHead_of_gamesI wish I could get a medical Weed card to help quit. It would make it far easier because you have something else to smoke while your still on cigarette cravings then it's easier to quit smoking weed because it's only a mental withdraw or you could keep smoking weed because it's so good..
[QUOTE="chessmaster1989"]No, it would be abused heavily.IceBlazerXHow would it be abused?
By starting to smoke so one can quit for a tax break.
I'm against it. I don't generally think it's the government's place to say what we should and shouldn't do with our bodies.

What the hell? Where do you live? I've never seen a pack of cigarettes that high. A carton yes, but never a pack. And I live in Illinois, which has pretty hefty cigarette taxes.

Last I heard New York had an average price of 9-10 Dollars, so it's not unbelievable... people just like to hate on smokers and it makes me sad[QUOTE="worlock77"][QUOTE="daqua_99"]

Last I heard New York had an average price of 9-10 Dollars, so it's not unbelievable... people just like to hate on smokers and it makes me sadI can believe that. A pack often costs around $3-$4 as is, thrown in a $1 federal tax, and I just looked up cigarette taxes state-by-state and New York has the highest in the nation at $4.00 a pack. Turns out Illinois' tax wasn't as hefty as I thought. IL has a $0.98 per pack tax. Many states have $2.00 or more. I guess I thought Illinois was high because of my experience with bordering states KY ($.0.60) and MO ($0.17).
No. They're clear-thinking adults. It's their choice to slowly kill themselves. If they give a tax break to smokers trying to quit, then I better get one too for going to the gym and staying fit.

I live in new york, its expensive here (parents smoke, and a few friends do, not sure on exact prices)the only reason i support it is because .........it means less 2nd hand smoke for me and the end of supporting a business that sells death. Of course i'd like some modifications to it such as they must stay off it for 6 months and be tested randomly or something if its possible. I do support thisMicrosoft1234
Random testing would make it incredibly expensive (not that it wouldn't be already. But anyway, this is just a bad idea all-in-all.

Where do you live that its 15+ dollars for a pack of cigs. I spend around 4 dollars a pack where I live (Nevada)Australia. The minimum price for a 20-pack is about $10.50, though most people buy the ones costing anywhere between $13 and $15 a packet
EDIT: The amount of taxes on cigarettes are insane here. They increased taxes by 25% earlier this year, adding an additional $2.16 to a 30-pack. Going by that logic there's about $9.50 in tax for a 30-pack of smokes
It shouldn't take a government tax break to get someone to quit smoking. They should want to quit for themselvesDivergeUnifyIt would only be the government paying the people back for the outrageous taxes the government put on cigarettes in the first place... I'd be more happy if the government would just leave us be so I could smoke with out paying up the *** for there bull **** "sin" tax

That's so hardcore wrong... Why do people let the governments do this... If it's legal why does the government they have the right to screw with the prices of it so much... They don't do this to fast food which is also REALLY bad for you
Against. Plenty of people who have no desire to quit would find a way to take advantage of it. Commander-Greepeople that already have been smoking for years deserve a tax cut... They've already payed thousands in stupid cigarette taxes... Most packs you buy now over half the cost is tax if not more... Packs would be between 1-3 dollars with out these taxes so places paying 9-12 bucks a pack are getting boned..
No. Unless they give tax breaks to an exercise program, stopping drinking, stop eating fast food etc.LJS9502_basicThose places aren't already taxed up the ***... If you ever pay 200% tax to get fast food maybe people quiting fast food can have tax breaks too...

The reason that cigarettes are taxed so high is because smokers have a much shorter lifespan, and so the taxes on cigarettes make up for the time that they're dead where most people would still be paying taxes.
Are you saying they should take out the Horrible Taxes on cigarettes? If they did that they would Lose A LOT more money then give tax breaks to people trying to quit... Although I wish they would take the taxes off of cigarettes because It's not there choice to make people quit smoking...Against it. Terrible idea. Their own personal choice should be the only thing influencing them one way or the other. The same goes for any other tax "incentives" that the government uses. Let the individual and the market work.

So its a smart thing to do? How can you call them smart - you get nothing from it, drinkers get drunk, drugies get some kind of effect depending on their drug. All smoking does is damage your body, and you recieve nothing from it, no high or anything like that. hotfireeIncorrect, you do get a high of sorts off of smoking a cig. Its a nicotine fix and people tend to get more relaxed while smoking. There are positives to the negatives.

Incorrect, you do get a high of sorts off of smoking a cig. Its a nicotine fix and people tend to get more relaxed while smoking. There are positives to the negatives.
