[QUOTE="with_teeth26"]Because xp is a party, and vista isn't invited. but really, xp seems to be more stable. i have vista on my school laptop, and when it works it's fine, but it seems to screw up a lot. it just seems slower and more frustrating to work with. so far every vista exclusive has been cracked for xp, and almost all dx10 effects have been enabled in xp through tweaking. if your willing to go behind the law, there is really no reason to spend money on vista. unless you have a thing for suck. Not exactly, Tricking and hacking Dx9 to do Dx10's job just doesn't do it justice.

Take Crysis for instance...

Sorry bro, Shader Model 4 is vista only :3

The only difference between Vista and XP very high there that I see is slightly better shadow shaders and possibly a slightly greater draw distance on Vista, and they're barely noticeable.

It makes a world of difference... trust me

I forgot to mention, i'm pretty sure the crysis xp very high tweak runs much better than vista very high. i tried the tweak myself, and if those graphics arent good enough for you, you have a serious issue. you'll be so engrossed in all the visual awsomeness around you that you won't notice the very minor differences unless you go over the game with a magnifying glass. bioshock looks exactly the same in dx10 as it did in 9, STalker: Clear Sky is tweakable to look as good in dx9 as it does in 10. the visual difference is so small that you'd need to have an extreme case of OCD to care about them.

I think the reason most people havent upgraded is because there really is no reason to do so if your current operating system working just fine. I installed Vista on my new rig March 07 when I built the beast. I also had an older copy of XP64, so I did a dual boot. That is until service pack one came around for Vista. Then Vista crapped out on me. I should of reinstalled. By this point, everything was working on XP64. I uninstalled Vista and stuck with XP64.

Don't get me wrong Vista was an awesome operating system. I will just install it on my next rig. I even plan on sending in the extra $10 and upgrading Vista to Vista 64 on my next machine. My next rig probably won't be for another 2 years. I am assuming it will have 8GB of RAM and 1 GB of Video RAM by then.

DX10 is just a bait tactic, the stability of software in Vista is questionable, I know that every hardware I have will work great in Xp, and there is bound to be a real "next gen" Windows coming out soon.

I will upgrade my OS when games I want start requiring me to upgrade my OS. Same thing happened win 98 SE and Win XP. I loved my Win 98 SE until a certain game I wanted to play ran like total and utter crap. I took the plunge to Win XP and it ran great. Unfortunetly for MS, Vista usually has the exact opposite effect. I am not saying Vista is total crap, I am just saying there is more of a chance to run into problems using Vista than XP.

I thought long and hard, but took the plunge on Vista 64 for the new PC just purchased.

It's in transit, so I can't comment if it was a good move, but I searched the net and thought the positives (just) outweighed the negatives.

I'm with Vista for 10 months now and I haven't had a single real issue since. I'm really happy with it and I would never switch back to XP. Vista WAS unstable back then without SP1 and all the updates, but now it's all fine.

only reason i even have a copy of vista is because my laptop came with vista. otherwise, i see no reason to get vista. since i do have vista already, the new rig i'm building in a week will have vista installed. and that's only so i can see how crysis looks in its full glory.

I had Vista ( 6 months ) went back to XP....

And I doubt I would reinstall it before the new OS comes out at the end of next year...

No real reason to do it...DX10 isn't worth the performance loss....and pretty little flip windows..? No thanks...

Generally a lot of laptops I've seen just suck for Vista, as they really aren't built to handle it. You need a higher performance laptop to really use Vista IMHO. My friend had a really crap laptop that came with vista and was horribly slow because of RAM issues etc.

I went from Windows 2K to Vista on my new computer so it was a little different for me I guess.

Regardless, I still like it and I have no had many issues with it, or with the games I've wanted to play.

The only thing bad about it was the fact that it didn't come with MS Office.

XP is very familiar to me, it functions very well and I can run absolutely every single game I want to run. All I see from Vista is compatability issues and steeper hardware requirements. Doesn't seem worth it, somehow.

I got Vista with my new laptop.

It has its frustrations. Especially asking me a bunch of questions any time I try to do something. Or how my music downloads get downloaded in to some kind of virtual store folder and I have to manually copy them over.

But, I can't complain about it. I haven't had an issue. Granted, I have 4 GBs or RAM, but, with this setup, its been quite good. I'm actually really impressed with it so far.

I am curious for the reasons people are not using Vista.

I myself am still running XP and for the foreseeable future I wont be getting Vista.

My reasons are price, compatability headaches, ease of use, games benchmark worse on vista than XP, game requirements being higher because Vista is a system ho.

Really, I probably wont get Vista until the big players drop XP support for their products.

zaku101

Same reasons here.

Samesies! Right now, Vista just looks good to me. And I see no point in going into an OS that will suck the power out of my computer. And really, what is the point? The new "better" security features are a hassle, steeper system requirements, And I won't get the fullest out of my computer...

I am running Windows Vista on two of my computers one is running Vista Ultimate, and the other running Vista Home Edition. I have not had any problem with theperformance on either one of my machines running games, using programs, or connecting up to a network. In fact I haven't had a single lock up since my transition on the date of Vista's release. Compared to that of running XP, where I could expect that issue to occur on occasion.

I take them both of my PCs to my buddies Local LAN parties, and I notice no performance hinderances in comparision to those running XP.

Compatability, the only problems with games I had was those that ran an earlier version of Starforce, and not running those was not a loss IMO. Older titles I could easily switch to compatability mode, but there are just those old games no matter if you were running XP or Vista it just hates your processor and video card.

A lot of people who I have met including some guildies who had run Vista and had problems ended up having insufficient system resources. for example one buddy purchased a cheap Dell from Dell with 512MB Ram and an onboard video adapter and thankfully a Intel core 2 duo, then after exclaimed how it was Vista's fault for the poor performance. After I helped put him up to 3GB of RAM, One Nvidia 8800GT, and a fresh reinstall without all the extra Dell crap onboard it runs pretty darn well now.

Of course that comes to the issue of "scaling up" , just like how initially if you got into the the release of XP or the early days of Windows 95 or 98, you had to scale up to meet the new operating demands.

The difference is marginal at best and not enough to even notice once you actually get into the game.

I built a shiney new PC for Vista and Vista kept crapping out every 3-5 months requiring a complete re-image to get rid of the issues. MS rushed it, so I went back to XP and I will stick with it until I absolutely have to switch (to Windows 7). What solidified the thought that Vista was crap were the results of the 65 unit test lab we setup at my company to test Vista and our apps. 3/5 had to be re-imaged quarterly. After almost 2 years (we started with beta version at first) of testing and MS patches we put the transition to Vista on the shelf indefinately.

No one with home experience can come to me and say "Vista is fine".

I would have to disagree with that statement. I pride myself on being a audio and audiophile. I myself can spot a large difference between playing crisis on XP as apposed to Vista. Unfortunately, it is impossible to pass of my opinion as fact (abet my obsessive compulsive opinion) so ill leave it on that.

Keep in mind the fact that crysis was technically made for Dx9 and (correct me if I'm wrong) I don't believe there are any games out at this time that have been made on, and for Dx10.

Again to all those who doubt the fact that Dx10 is a better API than Dx9 i would like you to check out this Stalker CS vid showing off Dx10. At this time (again correct me if I'm wrong) there is no simple way to enable Dx10 in vista for this game:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qxg9rK086SU

I built a shiney new PC for Vista and Vista kept crapping out every 3-5 months requiring a complete re-image to get rid of the issues.

That sucks :(

While your experiences have been bad, personally I have yet to have any significant problems. It hardly EVER crashes and when it does. Its such a small crash it hardly matters. Although I think I should add, I do take extremely good care of my PC with regular maintenance.

MS rushed it, so I went back to XP

MS rushing an OS :o

MS ALWAYS rushes there products! So I agree, they DID rush vista... Just like they rushed XP and just like they rushed 98. In fact i remember what XP was like before SP2 came out. before people finally started upgrading from 98 up to the point it became the new leading OS.

and I will stick with it until I absolutely have to switch (to Windows 7).

Windows 7 won't be out for YEARS (2010 release target is a joke). Like it or not it is very likely you will be using a Vista computer by the time Windows 7 hits (If your a big gamer that is).

What solidified the thought that Vista was crap were the results of the 65 unit test lab we setup at my company to test Vista and our apps. 3/5 had to be re-imaged quarterly. Sounds to me like your "test lab" was not a real test lab at all but 65 computers running a beta version of a new and untried OS. While i cannot accuses you of dressing up your results or even a general lack of technical savvy in your work place. I would like to ask what specs the computers were running?

I seriously doubt every computer at your place of work was running on a dual core with at least 2 gigs of ram because of budget. If my suspicions are correct then its common sense that any newer OS will run worse compared to older one on the same set of hardware.

No one with home experience can come to me and say "Vista is fine".

"Home experience?"

Don't you dare attempt to belittle me! I'm not just some casual computer user trying to feel good about his purchase by trying to "sell vista" to a bunch of people on a video game form.

I am a tried and true hobbyist. A hobbyist that knows how to spot another Windows 2000 or just another MS OS release being met with bad press and feedback from people who don't like change.

Needed a new OS with my new rig and went with vista - I haven't had any problems. I wouldn't consider it to be worthwhile to switch unless you have to buy a new copy of xp anyway.

aIf your getting tired of vista having you verify... pretty much everything.

All you need to do is:

Open up Control Panel, and type "UAC" in the search box then Turn User Account Control (UAC) off.

Be warned, testing has shown (obviously) that UAC improves the security on Vista

About your music files:

I would recommend re-installing WMP11 and disabling the "automaticly get licenses for" check box.

If all else fails you could simply delete media player :P

osx is only given out on a VERY limited combinations of hardware, and it still has alot of compatibility issues. osx is NOT faster, i use an imac at work and it is significantly slower than my vista laptop which is pretty lowend. it may be easier to use, but only for people who have never touched a computer before

Macs are overpriced and a lot less functional than a PC!

BUT, ultimately they are perfect for casual computer users that believe computer virus' are the anti-christ.

There is no denying that a noob surfing on a XP computer is 90 time more likely to get some form virus or spyware when compared to a Mac.

because if you hav ea budget in mind.. Vista is worthless it adds nothing siginificant and comes with some awful amount problems and hitchs.. Not to mention some odvious performance problems in games..

Sense I already own XP, there is no real reason for me to spend over $100 for a OS that isn't neccesary.

I've been using Vista for about a year now. Switched to the x64 version about 4 months ago (I have Vista Ultimate, so I changed over to the x64 version when I updated my hardware, since I heard that device drivers and such for the platform had matured quite a bit.)

I like it. The only thing XP really has over it is a lower memory consumption which, with my system's 4GB of physical memory, isn't really an issue for me. I do like alot of the simple additions in Vista: Aero offers some nice eye-candy, without being overly-flashy or intrusive to the workspace, and it allows the window manager to take advantage of a decent GPU, freeing up a little workload from the CPU. Another thing I really like is the Start Search..which I make heavy use of, as I don't use desktop icons (I just have a panel at the top of the screen for frequently-used programs) -- I don't even use the Start Menu navigator anymore.

Other than that, I suppose DX10 is a nice advantage..but the performance/detail difference between DX9 and DX10 hasn't been particularly noticeable in many games just yet. Vista also, overall, seems to be a much more stable operating system than XP ever was. I recall having many problems with XP over the years, but over the course of this year, I haven't run in to a single significant error or issue with Vista.

Vista isn't the second coming, nor is it some amazing operating system that I think absolutely everyone should use. It doesn't offer any HUGE advantages over XP..but I know that I personally would never return to XP (I started off dual-booting both to try out Vista. XP is since long-gone from my HDD.)

[QUOTE="scottydude182"]because mac osx is faster, mare stable and easier to use. DeadMann420

osx is only given out on a VERY limited combinations of hardware, and it still has alot of compatibility issues. osx is NOT faster, i use an imac at work and it is significantly slower than my vista laptop which is pretty lowend. it may be easier to use, but only for people who have never touched a computer before

Macs are overpriced and a lot less functional than a PC!
r spyware when compared to a Mac.

Macs are PCs, more or less. The "PC" is a platform, not an OS. There is no Mac platform anymore, because they are just PCs with a alternate OS.

I don't like Vista because Microsoft decided to screw with the layout/interface for no good reason. I'm effecient when using XP , I know where things are and how to get to them quick. In Vista I feel really encumbered. I'm sure I could get use to it in a few weeks but why bother? One rule in software making is that you don't make dramatic changes to the interface if there's no real need for it. It only frustrates the customers.

Well thank you Captan_obvious.

Tell that to apple seeing as they have been insistent on turning "PC" into an abbreviation for a computer with a Microsoft OS.

Ala "I'm a mac" commercials.

Just because apple says something, doesn't make it so. By that reasoning, an intel box running linux is not a PC. Is apple hardware running Linux a Mac? Or a PC?

You can't win this one so please don't even try.

I say "Mac vs PC" because it has become the fodder phrase for the ever so common Mac vs Windows debate.

Trust me here bro... your not the only one who knows that PC stands for "Personal Computer".

Eh, whatever. Those ads only work on the apple dumb as rocks userbase. A PC is any i386 compatible computer, it doesn't matter what OS its running.

Not to seem like i have it out for you but, I'm pretty sure the first "Personal Computer" was the Kenback-1.

While I do agree that the Mac has become a trendy, overpriced and casual ridden OS. It is good for people that like simple and flashy things as well as people in the film industry (Final Cut Pro is a great piece of software).

XP does everything I need it to. Vista has nothing that I need, so it would be pointless switching and spending out more money on 'features' I don't really need or use.
