So AMD had a conference just now about their GPU architecture which focuses heavily on direct compute and interaction with the CPU. Among the announced features:

- New GPU will have an L1 and L2 cache
- Completely new architecture
- CPU and GPU can combine power to perform nested functions (GPU feeding back into itself or feeding into the CPU which feeds back into the GPU, etc.)

No release date announced, although AMD has previously said that they're "on-track" for a release in 2011. Considering we don't have any details about the actual card models yet, I'd assume we're most likely looking at a Q4 2011 release.

Details will probably get announced on tech sites soon, so be on the lookout for those.

Here's some links from AMD's own site:

If true...I'm in trouble...I'm configuring my final list of components for my first build (which I'm purchasing at the end of next month) and I got rethink everything if it's true.

Dude, I JUST bought two 6970s back on Monday. They'll be here tomorrow. Now I get to cough up like $60 in shipping to send them back. What really pisses me off is that I was considering waiting a week before buying due to other factors but decided to ahead and pull the trigger. For some reason I always seem to only buy GPUs the week before their replacements are announced.

It's about time. It feels like the graphics market has been stuck at the 40nm node FOREVER.

Buyer's remorse? Just keep em, btw shipping isn't 60$ lol. Use USPS

No sense in keeping them if their successors will be out in a month. I mean, I spent $700 on the two. If I wait a month, that same $700 could get me cards that are significantly better. And even if I didn't want the 7970 or whatever will be the new flagship, the 6xxx cards will still see a price drop so I could probably save well over a hundred dollars at least by simply waiting another month. If these cards are coming out in three months or more, then yeah, I'll just install now and not care. But in a month? That's practically tomorrow. Actually, now that I think about it I could install the 6970s now anyway and then in a month just return them before the 30 day return period runs out, and then buy the 7xxx flagship lol. I think I might do that actually :P

Do you think the GTX 580 will drop in price as well to compete? I would like to afford 2 of them for SLI.

If they were coming out next month we would have already seen a lot of these types of threads, especially from ionusX. I would look for another September time frame for the release of AMD's next gpu's. Also, does anyone know if it will be the mainstream released first (like the 6800's) or the high end (like the 5800's).

I hope that they would drop the price of the rest of the cards cause I'm deciding whether to get a GTX 560ti for my first build but if the prices go down I might as well get a 570 or a 580 :D

So is this meant to be a proper jump this time or just a minor refinement like for 5xxx -> 6xxx?

Hope so people don't get it that a there are Little Performances incease from going to HD6870 - HD6950 or From HD5870 to HD6970 there at top +30% Performances we want to see at least +60% performances over HD5870 and if possible over 50% faster then HD6970 then that would be a True upgrade

I bought 2 6950s for about $250 ea. and thinking of just sticking with them for several reasons.

1) this is just a rumour, and there's no word of this anywhere else. If something this big was being released in a month, wouldn't be more talk of it going around? How long was bulldozer rumored to be coming out soon for? and look what happened.

2) there's always a new cpu or a new gpu around the corner i've noticed.

3) 6950s in CF should max everything at 1080p for a good time, and by the time they can't run anything past med-high ill upgrade to whatever is out next.

4) these will probably be around $300 or so anyway.. .maybe even more? and the prices may drop by what? no more than $50?

I'll keep my CF 6950s and have fun instead of waiting "just one more month" for the next thing thats rumored to be coming out. That and the store i had built the comp for me have probably already done so so its too late for me to change my mind. lol : p

This might be my next upgrade in a few months. Unless of course, a second 5870 would be better than the identically priced 7xxx card (which I doubt).

Yeah, just keep them! I'm still rockin on an ancient 8800 GTX, and I'm still not having any real trouble running games, so I think 2 6970's will last you for years to come!

A pair of 6970s is still likely to be better than most single card offerings in the 7xxx range of GPUs.

If they're changing the instruction word length, this could be a big change. If all that stuff is correct, it would seem they're aiming to make development much simpler and improve stability in final builds. Hopefully, that would mean better frame rates on top of what you get from better tech as the code will be more efficient.

I still doubt we'll see anything next month, though.

There is no source, and not a single glimpse of credibility to the next month claim. I'd like to belie this rumor firmly, but since it there is nothing back it up, there is nothing to disprove.

Even if they do release next month, newer doesn't mean better. 6970 is barely better than 5870. 2GB VRAM should last you a while yet

So I'm watching the conference right now and while they've avoided announcing anything yet, it's obvious they're about to announce the new line of GPUs. And it's not going to just be the 7xxx series from the sound of it, but rather the successor to the entire HDxxxx line. 28nm process AND completely new architecture.

Nice, can you post back here when there's more detail? I'm not going to keep the 2 6950s either way cause these should be able to max anything at 1080p 30+ fps for a good while. Then I can upgrade later when the time comes. All the other things (CPU, sound card, Mobo, Ram) probably won't need upgrade for several years.

VLIW4 was just a baby step towards this new architecture. This new architecture is basically what Nvidia did with GF110 but even better, in some regards. Also it does have some similarities to Larrabee. They want something that is very easy to schedule for, since vliw can require a lot of customization to execute efficiently, and something that will allow them to better compete in the GPGPU/CGPU markets.

Personally, I think they are shooting to hit the sweet spot again. Die size of less than 300mm2, something around 250-280mm2, and with performance at least 50% better than 6970.

Not always though. Typically when you move up a generation the budget card is as powerful as the previous generation's flagship single GPU card, and the new flagship single GPU card is as powerful as the previous generation's flagship dual GPU card.

That is not a source for the next month claim. The quote is "later this year", anyone with a slight knowledge of how the industry works will know that that means Q4 or next year in case of delays. Please cease attention-whoring.

That is not a source for the next month claim. The quote is "later this year", anyone with a slight knowledge of how the industry works will know that that means Q4 or next year in case of delays. Please cease attention-whoring.

That link was for the claim that a new GPU was on the way. The July release date was rumored since April on various sites, which you can find if you google. I wasn't pulling it out of my ass, just repeating what I heard. And since the rumor obviously turned out to not be true, I changed the topic title and main post to reflect that which you would have seen had you bothered to read the thread name you were replying to. You need to chill out the **** out bro.

I can only look at 1 thing Non-Very long Instruction Word (VLIW)

This must be a joke, seems like random words thrown together.

Its not made up, look up VLIW if you want an explanation of the architecture.

Its besides the point, the name is just hilarious. I dont care what the architecture itself does, Nvidia should one-up them and call it "Super Non-Very Instuction Word (SVLIW)" That would be awesome and just annoy the hell outta AMD.

If true...I'm in trouble...I'm configuring my final list of components for my first build (which I'm purchasing at the end of next month) and I got rethink everything if it's true.

The Fractal Arc midi tower releases late this month or early next. It is by far one of if not the best mid tower case you could get. Keep an eye on that release date.

Anyone that was even remotely following TSMC roadmaps knew that 28nm wasn't coming until 2H '11 back in early 2010.
TSMC is about to start Risk production of 28nm and we will be lucky to see something Q3. Q4 is extremely likely and with the announcement, even more likely.

Except Nvidia doesn't have a vliw architecture...

In the computing business, standing still gets you killed.

MS Visual C++ AMP runs fine on the current DX11 AMD Radeon HDs. They demo'ed MS Visual C++ AMP compiled program runningfrom AMD E-series APU (netbook, Radeon HD 63x0 uses VLIW5) to desktop AMD Radeon HD 5870 (VLIW5) Crossfire.

AMD Trinity APU uses Cayman (VLIW4) architecture.

As a MS Visual C++ programmer, I'm happy with MS Visual C++ AMP demo.

Most of AMD's product development timings runs by the ATI team i.e. yearly updates.

just ordered my new build :( AMD sought your announcements out, although i did know that this was releasing with bulldozer. Maybe i'll buy a cheap gpu and wait since scan is all out of my 6950 :/emperorzhang66
As with the demo, Visual C++ AMP complied program will use any available DX11 Radeon HD computing device.
