If you really care you don't buy the game, and you have the media criticize and demonize the company.

The gaming industry is the only one that actually gets away with insulting their customers (both figuratively and literally) at every chance it gets. The only thing left to do is vote with your wallet.

Its is obvious at this point that the gaming company's are going to put out what they want, they dont care about u as a individual, the younger generation will play those games and know no different, thus changing the way games are played in the future. The same people that run the world also run the game industry, believe it or not, u will play what they want u to play, or not play at all.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but in Australia if enough customers made complaints to the ACCC regarding the practices of Codemasters, EA and a couple of others those developers would quickly find themselves in alot of hot water. The only problem is actually getting ALOT of people to make complaints.

Sure, most of the customer base are. The direction that the big companies go indicates that. Speaking for myself, as of late, I've been purchasing indies or play free games (like Dwarf Fortress), or even play games I already own. Other than that, if I get an AAA title, I'll wait until Steam throws a big discount for them.I was very tempted on buying the new SimCity as that franchise is one my favorites, but after hearing the complaints, EA can go die in a fire.

Exactly, no one is united, divide and concur, its old as hell, tried and true. The problem with the game industry, gas prices, food, etc....... it could go on for ever, is that the people are so divided that there voices are never heard, and as time passes we continue to get more divided. They will give us WHAT THEY WANT as long as the masses accept it. Honestly I have lost faith in the human race, we R fcked, and yes this what I am referring 2 is way beyond video games, but it ties in, its one in the same, just another tool

Hmm, perhaps I cant figure out if people really like Call of Duty XX-Unlimted number or any of the dozen or so mindbogglingly dumb FPS games or they just accept them and we all act like lemmings who buy the game because everyone else do it and nobody remember who bought the game first.

It's all BS mostly from gamers directly. There are so many out there that complain CoD is a copy/paste, that this other game is too much DRM blah blah blah and then go out and buy it. Either complain and stick to your "I'll never buy that" or just accept the terms and play the game. (there ARE a few on here that actually stick with their word, like Wildflower)

I never really understood the whole "I don't get why people love Call of Duty XX Number". Do you also not understand why people watch lots of seasons of the same show?

Pretty much this. You'd be suprised how much you don't give a fvck when you dont buy the game. Sim City is crappy with DRM issues? Don't know, don't care. Good luck to those that bought it. ;)

No one forces you to buy a game.  You make that conscious decision yourself.  If you want to avoid the crap from some developers then stop buying their games.  It really is as simple as that.

Don't agree with a particular DRM?  Then don't buy into it.
Don't agree with a game's design?  Then don't buy it.

As the consumer you do have the power to make changes - unfortunately most people seem to lack the 'willpower' to follow that through.  The only thing game companies care about is how many units are sold, and use those sales to gauge whether a particular business model is working.  So if you buy into it, you're telling them directly that you support it.

You're only a slave to a franchise if you make a conscious decision to be one.  Cultivate some willpower and break your addiction.

We have people on this very forum who defend these companies vigorously, it is quite ridiculous. Just because it is games does not mean it is not a business, it is in fact a business. That makes us CUSTOMERS. Act like it.

Research first and if you don't like what you're reading, don't buy the game. It's as simple as that.

I was planning to get Sim City, but I didn't because of always-online DRM and the game being geared towards multiplayer.

I didn't buy Sim City and neither should you have.

You don't have to "put up with their crap" if you don't buy the game. Plenty of good games out there that you could purcahse.

Aside from that ending, the rest of the game was really damn good. Some people may go on and on about how Bioware stole art assets from across the internet (who gives the crap, this happens everywhere), but the actual 30 hour long game of Mass Effect 3 AND the multiplayer (suprisingly) was absolutly amazing. Just forget how the last 10 minutes of the game basically was the biggest disappointing ending of all time. They even took steps to fix it.

While i'll never forget how lame the ending was, I cannot just ignore the rest of the game.

If you don't like a game...don't buy it.  No point in whining about it on the internetz.

PC gamers partially did this to themselves.  Their expectations got higher and higher while demanding bleeding-edge graphics (PC gamers call to fame).

Guess what?  Those bleeding edge graphics and increased level complexity require larger studios to develop them= higher development costs.

A studio can't make a blockbuster, AAA, high budget, uber graphics/physics/AI/complexity/etc game that only targets a small sliver of the gaming community.  Sorry, Economics 101.

If you're fine with smaller, esoteric, indie titles to meet your "elevated and sophisticated" gaming tastes...then more powre to you!

Just for clarification. I'm not referring to buying games that I don't like (I agree, if you don't like games don't buy them), I'm referring to games like F1 2012 or SimCity that are knowingly released in a broken state by the developer.

This used to happen with games 20 years ago.  Obviously it was harder to detect the faults back then cause games were so simple.

It's REALLY hard to find a game at launch that has been perfectly optimized with no bugs.

This is an interesting post. You're not wrong to some degree.

The grey area though is that some developers think they have to water their games down to appeal to a broader market or community.

My argument is how do they know people won't like something new if they don't try it?

Like Thief for example: why add all that new crap like focus mode etc when we know there is a community who wants to see the old styIe retained?

Want to know the reason why gameing companys get away with what they do? Look in the mirror. It is the consumer who has allowed them to get to this point. Some think we don't have a voice but we do, it is called a wallet. I have been gaming since Pong came out (yes I am old but that doesn't mean I can't still enjoy my hobby). Developers get away with re-hashing old titles, taking content away from the base game and then calling it DLC, Software that can take numerous patches to make it playable and the list goes on. Now we will have fanboys who really have no clue claim things like "They need patches because the hardware is so varied and advanced". I say BS on that. There are not that many standards that PC gamers use nowdays. I say no more buying games from companys who do not offer a demo. No more excepting excuses for titles that are broken on release and demanding our money back when said product is not received. Would you buy a car, go to drive it off the lot and it dies and the dealer says "Sorry, we will have to keep it here, it needs a couple of patches first."

For those of you who bothered to read this, I Have an extra ARMA 3 Lite invite if anyone would like it. Now ARMA3 Lite has no multiplayer and you can not save anything. It basicly gives you a chance to just check out the ALPHA.

You have to understand this industry is such that maybe %2 of devs get rich and the other %98 can't pay the mortgage.

It's over-saturated.

So yeah maybe some games come out broken, terrible launch, DRM server's down, etc etc.

It still feels good to be a gamer, at worst I lose a few bucks on a bad game, but I get to play alot of great ones, and if you just wait for sales and price drops it's pretty affordable hobby.

Too accepting? Are you kidding? Of course we are.

For the better part of 25 years this industry as chosen to release one title after another that was broken or unfinished. You can brush some of it aside as conflicts due to a myriad of software and hardware configurations but not all. For example, Unreal Tournament 3 required a 309 MB patch and Pool of Radiance: Ruin of Myth Drannor might delete key files from Windows when uninstalled.

Some of this can be blamed on the ridiculous demands for bleeding edge graphics. Most of the time this seems to add to development time and cost which leads to a more complex engine. This give it many more ways to break and far too often does. On a side note, this is one of the biggest reasons why the PC is not the gaming powerhouse it could be. I've seen many people take one look at a screen shot and say "My PC could never run that I'll play on a console" or some moron happily state " You'll have to upgrade to play" which means "PC gaming is an expensive exclusive club, you can get lost."

More can be blamed on developers reaching for goals they don't have the skill to achieve. Or on problems that appear due to developers dumping teams that work well together in favor of a new group that has never seen each other before.

I think some of you are wrong. There is more that we can do. UT3 should have led to a lawsuit. We could have turned our back on Half-Life 2 instead of worship Valve like so many did do. Opportunities do arise to send a message. We just don't take advantage of them enough to make a real impact.

What about Aliens: CM. Pure bait and switch, a practice which is illegal in many other industries so why is software any different?

You haven't been to SW, I take it?

I'd say we're too CRITICAL if anything. Of course if you mean gamers in general, perhaps but even then there's still those that are critical to the point of destroying every game they come in contact with.

This. I think gamers this generation are quite the opposite. We flail our arms and cry about nearly everything. Kudos to those that do know how to appreciate good developers though.

It's not a matter of being too accepting, just a lot of forum crying and not enough action.

Like the people who complained about Origin all the time but decided Battlefield and Mass Effect were too good to pass up.

I'll tell you what I do when something like Simcity happens (or when any AO game releases ever again): I don't pay, go onto as many sites I can to give 1 star reviews out of principle, and attempt to mock and ridicule them.

As for if gamers are too accepting? Yes. I think the problem here stems largely from how gaming is seen. Many look at it as not at all that important in the larger scheme of things. Which I totally agree with, but this view breeds apathy towards these terrible practices. "I just don't care, it's just a game. Not cancer, etc" is what I hear. They don't see it as their rights as a consumer being trampled and threatened, just that for how important gaming is in the larger picture it's not worth it, so who cares?

These people I don't see as those who truly love gaming as a hobby, they view it as just a time waster. Plus, many simply find instant gratification to be more important than the long term ramifications that their support enables, and also don't believe that one person will make a difference.
