The multiplayer is awesome. Granted it definitely has its problems (a few controversial/broken perks, lag, and perhaps the worst spawn system ever seen in a multiplayer game) but it's extremely fast paced and the addition of levels, rewards, and achievements makes it extremely addictive. And of course there's all the perks, weapons, and weapon mods which allow you to fine tune a class that best matches your playing style. Considering the immense popularity of COD4's online multiplayer I think most people would beg to differ on your opinion that COD4 is merely average.

Also, complaining about the single player in COD4 is kind of pointless considering that few people bought it for the single player experience.

mirgamer

cod4 was average, not great, not bad. they missed on the mechanics and missed on the storyline. hell, they even missed on the most of the gameplay.

Its multitude of accolades and 10 million retail sales argues very heavily against your opinion. It was designed as a strictly linear fast paced action FPS with a good story and as far as linear FPS games go, its record speaks for itself.

.. Sales just means its a commerical success.. We all know how much PC gamers just "Love" Halo, after all that sold well as well.. CoD4 is by no means a bad game, its just superbly over-rated in every way, consisting of mechanics that havn't evolved sense 2000.. And the story was typical cliche nonsense.. Typical bad guys, Arabic nationalists and Russian extremists.. Get a hold of a nuclear weapon.. Damn man that was so original I havn't seen something like that in a Tom Clancy movie, game or book.. Oh wait I have. Let me clarify these are my opinions and I by no means am trying to state them as fact. But the game had imo some serious flaws that I hope the sequel addresses.

It wasn't clear if he died, the medics were resuscitating him. And he was a captain in WW2, he's obviously immortal.

Baranga

He is dead. People need to stop denying it.

I don't think you know how to use facepalms.

I'll try to explain it to you.

Everyone knows CoD has linear gameplay.

Everyone knows Starcraft has bad graphics, but good gameplay.

Picking on the fact that CoD is linear and not something else is like picking on Starcraft because it has poor graphics. You know what you're getting into.

I'm sorry I facepalmed. I should have anticipated the typical starcraft fanboy response to graphics.

Except I enjoy linear shooters like Half-Life 2 and FEAR as much as the next guy.. CoD4 was literally one of the most linear I have seen in a decade.. Where the game not only controled the direction you went to the extreme with ridiculous barriers such as a picket fence.. Look I wasn't expecting wide open territories like Crysis.. But I was at least expecting intelligent level design with some form of effort to avoid making it feel artificial.. Non such effort was there.. Infact the game not only controled your movements to the extreme.. It also threw a endless tide of respawning enemies and controled the tempo in the game.. I mean YOU CAN'T EVEN OPEN DOORS.. You have to go at the games pace the majority of the time. The gun play was acceptable, but the poor AI with throwing unrealistic masses of guys at you were ridiculous.

If they get rid of the infinite enemies, thats a big improvement. But my issue was COD4 was the online. It was laggy, and i hated the perks. I don't want perks. remove those and i'm happy

JumpingMirrior
might need a new internet provider i run high speed cable modem works fine and if it didnt have perks i dont think i would be the same in a bad way

Yay for no more cheap spawning enemies!

I wonder if this means they will be capable of more than run, shoot and die?

Doubt they will have improved much else engine-wise though.

CoD's been one of my all time favorite FPS franchises. I remember getting all excited when the first CoD was announced and preordering that baby the second I could. The only complaint i've ever had was the infinite enemy spawning, which was always a pain and my only complaint in SP. The multiplayer has always been one of the most satisfying experiences, and I just can't stop playing CoD4 multi. I booted up CoD1 last year to play through the SP and jumped on MP and there are still people tearing it up. There's something to be said about Infinity Ward, they know how to make a very well scripted game and fantasic MP.

I wish they'd come up with some new locales other than the Middle-East and Russia. Those places are so worn out in modern war games.

War breaking out in Western Europe would be pretty cool - Paris, London etc. and Tokyo would be great fun too.

Modern Warfare 2 takes players to the snow-capped peaks of Russian mountains, across the deserts of Afghanistan and into the streets of Rio de Janeiro, and introduces a new co-operative Special Forces mode to back up the single-player campaign.

"The gameplay is wide open and has a lot of variety," Infinity Ward president Jason West told Game Informer. "In terms of the story... well, any good story is on rails." The game is set against the backdrop of continuing Russian instability, with a new baddy, Makarov, using Zakhaev's demise as justification for naughtiness.

Pictured: the antagonist.

Other missions include hunting down an arms dealer in Rio, which evolves into a running gunfight with militia among fleeing civilians

Special Forces mode, meanwhile, is "in the spirit of Mile High Club", according to West, who told Game Informer that it will use tricky scenarios that didn't make it into the single-player game and thus have no relationship with the difficulty curve.

"[Co-op] made a lot more sense here," West said, explaining that the levels were designed with two players in mind. Co-op tweaks include an on-screen arrow pointing to the other player, and a mini-map highlighting your relative locations.

Honestly wouldn't even make comparisons between Halo and Cod 4 even if both were successful FPS. Halo ce, Halo 2 vista were all very poor ports, that if I hadn't play the two on the Xbox which were the superior versions and experienced them first hand on PC I would then literally share the same opinion as quite a few people on this board. Unlike Halo and Halo 2 Vista, Cod 4 felt very natural on the PC allowing PC users to really apprehend a level of satisfaction the console community were enjoying. The Cod franchise were always linear in that sense, so going into Cod 4 was an incoherent decision.

I like Open World and choices like the next gamer, but I too also revere the fantastic cinematic design of the Cod series by Infinity Ward.

Terrorists AGAIN!? infinity ward really has no creativity, how about something new, how about country vs country instead, these scenarios re always more interesting than special forces vs terrorists (rainbow six has been doing this for years, get your own idea's, infinity ward)

And another 6 hour campaign? infinity ward needs to learn what VALUE for money is, it really is disgusting when a get more playing time from a game i got for £15 then one i bought for £40.

Americans love terrorists, and the multiplayer is supposed to offer the value.

Apart from the multiplayer is a repetitive gimmick, people only care about levelling up, awful spawn systems and dumbed down gameplay, activision and infinity ward are just milking this series.

COD1 was a great game(in my opinion best in the series) but it is about time this series is put to rest, it is the same every year.

I'd rather there be no campaign and have them focus 100% on the multiplayer.

The game had great presentation, its story was absolutely nonsense imo.. Nor did I care about any of the characters in it.. The shooting mechanics weren't that good either.. The actual multiplayer was in no way superior or new to any of the shooters out already either..

Considering the various console spin-offs, this is the bazillionth game.

COD4 and 5 are a far cry from the first two. They are a lot more cinematic, and that's why we like them. It's unfair to say they're basically the same game, it's like saying Prey is identical to Quake 4. There are obvious similarities, but the show is different enough.

Uhh, question. I hear a lot of people complaining about lag in CoD4. Why not just join a server with a lower ping? And if they all have high ping, then it's probably your internet.

Thanks for the scans SuperMario. Despite my opinion that CoD4 is a waste of money, I'm still going to give this game a shot with the demo (please let there be a demo).

Edit: I hate how they keep bragging about their 12 million sales. It reminds me of Blizzard with WoW. Just because a game sells well doesn't mean it's good. >.

Just because you say it isn't good, that doesn't mean it isn't good and fun for others (millions - of course some got it out of hype, but some people actually bought it because it was a great game) >_>. I don't know why you guys complain so much and in the end "hmm...yeah imma buy it, but it will suck", who cares? don't get the game, if you say something like that I don't know why you're even bothering to bash it, since you;re clearly showing how ignorant you are. If somebody doesn't like something they don't buy it, it's as simple as that.

It's a fun game with an awesome atmosphere, it's not suppose to be a simulator, it's not the next Crytek game, it doesn't have a physics engine to brag with in every level after every minute, it doesn't have an open world, etc, it's not even considered as a single player game anymore, the sp is just a bonus now and this time it looks like it'll be awesome (don't know why it looks so much like Double Agent) but the multiplayer is where it's at. If any of you expect that from COD then I don't know what's in your head, it's clear that CoD will never be what you want if you don't appreciate its formula.

What the hell is this, common sense on Gamespot?!

People always complain... If it went all sandbox-y, people would *female dog* for months, regardless of the thousands of posts that ask COD to be completely the opposite of what it is today.

I really loved COD 4, it looked realistic and tense, the action was allways there. And the story? well some may dissagree, it was new for me too see a story where americans lost something (Iam not american, my apologies if I insult anyone who is). And yes the physics where missing, but I play videogames too escape reality not too get more involved. And I must say that I really look forward too Modern Warfare 2, it looks epic.

It's not the formula that gets me. It's that it was so similar to CoD2 that it wasn't really worth the $50 when you could just go back and play the previous game. I'm sure many people liked the story and all, but it was not really worth it for the price tag. As for multiplayer, grenade spam really kills it. It sounds like they are improving this new game, though. No respawning enemies is definitely good, and hopefully they can fix grenades as well. Unless they do that, I'll just keep playing CoD2, or even better, TF2.

yeah because we havent been to any of those places in any games before.

riot sheilds were in vegas, etc

movable turrets were in cod1, cod2, and cod3

ohhh 60 fps! riveting!

deffo game of the year!!

Ohhh I shot people in Wolfenstein 3D, I don't need to buy another FPS ever!

I mean seriously, you're not even trying.

I don't care that riot shields were in Vegas. Now they're in COD too and I'm happy.

When did i say i was trying?

Oh and wolfenstein was a new thing when it was released, call of duty is just rehash after rehash, with it being slightly dumbed down every sequal.

seriouly cod 80 will probably be released when im a pensioner, it really is just a cash cow series now with no new ideas, the great ideas now come from indie developers and modders.

Some of those pictures from the magazine looks pretty sweet. Is that in-game? I wouldn't be surprised.

OoSuperMarioO

Linear gameplay is a design choice. It's valid to complain about a design choice. Poor graphics in Starcraft is an 11 year old technology limitation. Complaining about that is invalid. And I'm no Starcraft (or RTS) fan FYI.

For the record, don't go into a Blizzard game expecting high end graphics, to do so will only disappoint you.

This was what I was going for. Linear gameplay is a design choice. Knowing the game is going to be linear, just like every other CoD, and complaining about it is pointless (don't buy the game). Just like you know Blizzard games will probably never have Crysis level graphics. Starcraft was technologically inferior to the time. Homeworld (1999) and Total Anniliation (1997) are perfect examples. Both games had 3d enviroments with real-time calculations of projectiles. Starcraft may have an artistic approach, but that was a design choice. I didn't complain about it because it's what blizzard is. They choose to work on art and gameplay over technology aspect of their games.

Except the linear presentation it had was acceptable in the first installment during 2000.. I have already stated earlier I AM FINE WITH LINEAR GAMES.. Get this through your skull, its just CoD4 takes this to the extreme.. With outdated mechanics.. Where they throw endless amounts of enemies at you during extrmeely narrow regions, where your cut off from apparent other areas due to a 2 foot picket fence.. And the stupid AI specifically targets you 80% of the time.. What narrow places you had, nothing you could interact with, barrels didn't even knock over.. and you COULDN'T EVEN OPEN DOORS you had to get your team mates to do it.. Its at best trying to be a interactive movie with its good presentation.. The only problem is games such as Bioshock rival it, (as well as being some what linear but gave you choices).. I don't know about you guys but the fact that the enemies were dumb as bricks, and they flooded you with it looks like half the population of Russia and the Middle East.. It just got completely boring in the end. There were some cool scenes, but imo it is a superbly over-rated game.. I at least have some expectations with the game, such as having mildly intelligent AI for having such narrow areas.. Having the environment actually interactiable.. Having realistic barriers.. I don't care if its a locked door, its far more enjoyable knowing I can't go through locked doors, than finding out that a 2 foot tall wooden fence is stopping me from going any where..

Then don't buy it!

Crying up a storm isn't going to change the CoD series. You act like you've never seen a CoD game before.

CoD4 sold 10million+ copies. You're asking them to fix something that isn't broken.
