surprise: airborne - a decent game from ea? and i thought i'd seen everything...
let down: bioshock - magnificent game, it's just a bad copy of shock 2, andvastly inferior, but still awesome by typical game standards... i was just hoping for a game to rival system shock 2
satisfaction: probably broken sword: angel of death -the you solved the puzzle sound is simply the most satisfying thing in the world, ever
Surprise: I'd say STALKER. Although I have the deadly combination of the game and Vista, I'm fine with static lighting. Guess I didn't give the game much of a chance when I played it the first time.
Letdown: A tie between Oblivion and Bioshock.
Satisfaction: Battlefield 2
Surprise....fable,oblivion,company of heroes
let down....S.T.A.L.K.E.R,quake 4
satisfaction battlefield 2,lord of the rings the battle for middle earth
Surprise: Far Cry, STALKER, Dawn of War, Call of Duty
Let Down: Half Life 2, Medal of Honor Allied Assault, Call of Duty 2
Satisfaction: GRAW, Earned in Blood, Ragnarok, KOTOR 2
Blood lines is really that good? I played it and it was way too bugy. should i try it again with the patches?arangadillo
using the most recent (official) patch, i experienced zero bugs, and only a few drop to desktop crashes
as for how good it is, i'd say it's the best roleplaying game ever made, and a perfect example of how much better the roleplaying genre would be as a whole if D20 and japanese stuff weren't so popular...
Surprise - S.T.A.L.K.E.R
Let Down - Bioshock. Only because i thought the story was alot more immersive. only now and then do you bump into tape cassettes. Other then that the Gameplay is great. Good use of weapons and combat variations is great.
Satisfaction - Call of Duty online (if that counts)
Suprise: Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
Let Down: Half-Life 2 (The first Half-Life is much better and i'd prefer to play it to this day)
Most Satisfaction: Star Wars Galaxies (Pre cu)
Surprise ; Two Worlds...this game is surprisingly deep and has a ton of content. A 3d Diablo. Look past the technical problems and you have a gem of a game.
Let Down ; Oblivion....I did still enjoy the title, but it simply felt empty and got boring towards the end.
Most Satisfaction ; Company of Heroes...I'm not huge on RTS's, but this game was simply stellar and one of the strategy games I played from start to finish.
Surprise:
Kingdom under Fire: Heroes-turned out to be pretty cool
Second Sight
Let Down:
SSX on Tour
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Super Mario Sunshine
FFX-Mediocre. Couldn't beat boss9/10 through game. Was bad at levelling up and the system actually allowed a person to utterly fail in creating a strong levelled up character. Has now left a hole in my heart where wave after wave of mediocre games have entered my body. Lasted at least awhole damn month!
Hitman 2
Pikmin2-awful compared to original, same enemies, bland puzzles, redundant and gimmicky new Pikmin allies
The list goes on :(
I'm hoping that the much-praised ICO will help me in this dry spell of mediocregames. Please save me Ico...please don't turn out to suck...
Satisfaction:
God Hand-Difficult, fun boss fights and enemies, different, greatly satisfying combat, wacky moments! Helped me get through this dry spell throughout the last month
Suprise:Star wars: Rebublic commando
Let down:Heroes of might and magic 5: Hammers of fate, because the dwaren race in not very fun to be I am sorry to say.
Moast satisfaction: Heroes of might and magic 3. Me and my brother have been playing hot-seat for about 8 years now.
Surprises:
Dark Messiah (I couldn't put the game down for three days! Something about it kept me interested)
Doom 3 Last Man Standing Coop mod (Doom 3 is ten times as fun with a friend!)
Let Downs:
Oblivion (wasn't as good as Daggerfall and Morrowind, oblivion realms were generic and way too repetitive, graphics were pretty sweet though)
STALKER (gameplay was severely lacking for me, had higher hopes for quality)
Neverwinter Nights 2 (I thought they would have made the modding software a little less buggy then NWN1, but it was the opposite. The single player campaign was pretty boring too)
Satisfaction:
Company of Heroes (one of the few RTS that kept my interest past the first level)
BioShock (Great setting and atmosphere, variety and gameplay were lacking but the graphics and story made up for it)
Half-Life 2 (Still one of my favorite games of all time)
Doom 3 (am I the only person who actually liked the flashlight mechanism?)
Surprise - Definitely Airborne. I was expecting this to be the final nail in the coffin, but got quite the opposite feeling from the demo
Let Down - F.E.A.R. A lot of people seem to like this game, but the online is such a shallow spray fest. Boring.
Satisfaction - Mario Kart DS. Man I love this game.
Surprise:Bioshock (never played System Shock 2 and all I can say is WOW what a game), Company of Heroes, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (not a big fan of adventure games, but this game has an amazing story which other games should take some hints from)
LetDown:Oblivion (awesome setting, but got boring towards the end in part due to the fact that the world leveled with you, so stupid), Supreme Commander (I love this game, but the 1st and 2nd tier in the tech tree is useless due to the overpowering defence, they need to make it a little more offensively oriented), Battelfield 2 (the whole badge and ranking system killed the fun in this game and for all generations of similar games to come), CNC3 (the game seemed to go backwards from what was achieved by Generals, the maps are ridiculously small and there is no strategy involved, just mass units faster than the other guy)
Satisfaction:Vampires The Masquerade: Bloodlines (one of the best true RPGs ever made, use the patches to enjoy it bug free), KOTOR1 & 2, Warhammer 40000 + All EXP
Surprise: STALKER, Tomb Raider Anniversary(had never really played any of the tomb raider games)
Let down: Hl2, quake 4, Medal Of honor Airborne, CnC3.
Satisfaction: Far Cry, Hitman Bloodmoney, Painkiller, Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines and Doom 3(and i also loved the flashlight machanic)
In the past year or so what game(s) has been the biggest Surprise, Let Down, and given you the Most Satisfaction? Surprise - S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Let Down - Bioshock Satisfaction - Medieval Total War IIarangadillo
Ya, I too think this is a good topic. And I agree with you on Bioshock, total letdown.
Suprise: Overlord; controlling minions and whatnot is so much freaking fun. Its like:
Fable + GRAW 2 (squad control, squad better than you, etc) = FUN FUN FUN! Controls are a bit iffy, but thats the only flaw I can think of at the moment. Anyone wanting something other than your standard RTS, FPS, and RPG should get this!
letdown: Bioshock. Ugh, its a solid game but whats the big deal. Its got plasmids, woopty doo other than coming from your left hand how are they different than a gun (i.e. taser gun, ice gun, flamethrower, etc). Plot sucks too...the only outstanding feature imo is the level design. Waayyyy too short...whoever said it gives 40 hours of play time should be tried for fraud. Im on my second play through (on hard) and its only been 8 hours and I am almost done.
Satisfaction: this is a tough one...over the past year, I say Command and Conquer 3. It was everything I asked for, and it made me feel like I was an 11-year old in 1995 again playing my favorite RTS. It wasnt the best in the series, but its the happiest Ive been while gaming for a while. Awesome visuals, satisfyingly-corny FMVs, good plot, diverse singleplayer, cool units...like I said, everything I want in an RTS. Its like eating an extremely good pizza...youve had pizza thousands of times before, but this one just hit the spot and was awesome.

It seems like you just rushed right through the game.
Suprised: Airborne(a good MoH game? What??)
Letdown:Oblivion(now, I'm strictly talking Vanilla here. With mods it brings it on par to morrowind. Shallow story, uninteresting place, dumbed down, leveling system. Again with mods, it changes)
Satisfaction:Morrowind(Tes FTW!) Total War series
Doom 3 (am I the only person who actually liked the flashlight mechanism?)SentientGames
Nope, I liked it, too.
Surprise: FEAR, Dark Messiah
Let Down: Far Cry, after all that build up I had heard on the forums and from other peopleI thought the game was pretty standard issue.
Satisfaction: Pharaoh, Call of Duty: UO, Doom 3, Medal of Honour: Pacific Assault. Thats right, I like it! :o

Doom 3 (am I the only person who actually liked the flashlight mechanism?)shamuk
Nope, I liked it, too.
I liked Doom 3 aswel but i just think the Doom 3 engine isn't very good.
Suprise: Mafia, Far Cry....and everyone being letdown by Bioshock - I've been delaying my gratification, but now may skip
Letdown: Deus Ex: Invisible War (didn't even come close to the original, but I have high hopes for Deux Ex 3)
Satisfaction: Deus Ex, Max Payne 1 & 2
In the past year.....
Surprise:
- Mafia 2 announced....I never thought that wish would come true.
- Gears of War actually coming to PC with over 20% over exclusive content just a year after the 360 version and actually playable on XP....I was worried MS would try to pull another Halo 2 fiasco, luckily, Epic kept things in order.
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R. actually turning out to be a good game.
Satisfaction:
- BioShock
Letdown:
- Dark Messiah of Might & Magic (technically last year, but still within the past 12 months)
Let's see, over the past year...
Surprise- Bioshock. I didn't pay much attention to it before release. the prospect of running around in an underwater city seemed slightly boring for some reason, I don't particularly like "scary" games, and I found it a little excesssive to have an entire team dedicated to water effects. I recently played the demo just to see what the fuss was about, and was blown away (especially by the water effects  ). Now I can't wait to finish building a computer that will run it.
Letdown- Oblivion. I had high hopes for it coming off of Morrowind, and while it's got a gorgeous game world, it's got too many flaws to rate anywhere near Morrowind. Still a good game, but MW is on my top 10 list for a reason.
Satisfaction- Deus Ex. Finally got the chance to play it this year, and I'm glad to say that it's been everything it's made out to be. Not perfect, but it's pretty damn close. Now I just need to finish it...
Surprise - Crackdown (I played it more than the stupid halo 3 beta)
Let Down - The Wii (Biggest waste of $350 ever... no good single player games, motion sensing sux)
Satisfaction - KOTOR Series, CSS, Garrys Mod 10
Surprise- BioShock. I hadn't thought much of the game up until a couple months before its release. I'm surprised I'm enjoying the game as much as I am.
Let down- Can't think of one at the moment.
Satisfaction- Half-Life 2 belongs in this category, a game of unbeatable qualities.
Recently:
Surprise: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. the atmosphere and game's AI makes it the most realistic shooter ever IMO
Letdown: Bioshock I loved the originality of it, but in the end is just get from point A to B with little to less excitement on the way. I'd say it left me the same impression Prey did : cool ideas and environment, slow paced action
Satisfaction: CoH I have the feeling the guys at Relic could compete with the upcoming SC2 if they put their minds on creating an original serious Sci-Fi unlike that WH40k joke (orcs and lasers don't mix)
All-time:
Surprise: MAFIA I never thought Illusion Softworks (WTF some czech guys) could put up possibly the best game ever.
Letdown: Quake 4 It's a perfect example how they can ruin things by drastically altering it's original concept.
Satisfaction: I`m still playing HMM3 from time to time and I've never got bored after 8 years now
Surprise
Letdown
Satisfaction
I'm surprised to see BioShock as so many let downs.firefly026
I suspect System Shock 2 has some responsibility to play in that. Also while I know many people will disagree with my opinion on this I honestly feel from playing the demo that I would get bored of Bioshock real fast.
And if only SS2 had some updated graphics I might be tempted to play it to discover how such an event occured..........
