Of course Blizzard is overrated. Just look at all the Blizzard butt kissing going on from Gamespot reporters. Blizzard must have some big checks flying this way.

Meejoe27

Must be a conspiracy...

OR they create incredible games and have millions of fans.

Right now there are millions of people playing their games.

How many game developers can say that? 3 maybe 4 in the world?

Face it, they are a giant in the industry and earned their reputation for quality.

Nadeo, Valve, EA especially EA Sports, Relic, NCsoft, IW, Rockstar and maybe others that I don't care much about. @ Jinroh: You're the most frustrated person I've seen o_0, I thought you weren't one of those clueless haters but you are. Unlike others they really fix their games when they delay it, but what would you know, you hate all the Blizzard games. There's a reason people still buy their games even now, people that know nothing about Blizzard and I'm not talking about WoW, I wonder why, because they make crappy unoriginal games, with no replay value and lots of bugs? yeah sure w/e makes you sleep at night. You're the first person I've seen/see that complains so violently that a developer takes their time to make the game better, perfect, you're complaining about the very thing that defines Blizzard, their devotion, they are a company that needs to make money but they care about their games because a good game gets more money.

Well, I doubt anyone could convince me that there is any of the following:

- A MMORPG that came out before World of Warcraft that is at least as good as World of Warcraft.

- A RTS game that came out before Starcraft that is at least half as good as Starcraft. :P

- An ARPG that came out before Diablo II that is at least one fourth as good as Diablo II.

(Warcraft III was also good, but didn't hold my attention for as long as Starcraft did for various reasons, not the least of which were items and heroes.)

Everquest a better game...yeah, sure. I guess if you like literally standing in one spot killing the same mobs over and over again. Well, I never played EQ, but I played FFXI and everyone said it was basically EQ. WoW made MMORPGs far more dynamic, among other things.

I've tried over and over again to get into the Command and Conquer games, but I find there is too much bullcrap going on all the time and I feel they are just far too fast paced overall. Red Alert 3 was especially bad in this regard. Actually, Red Alert 3 was one of the most frustrating games I've ever played all the way through. Not diffficult necessarily, just frustrating. Frustrating interface, constant bombardment of messages and chat while the game keeps on going during the campaign, oftentimes terrible pathfinding, and unit abilities just for the sake of adding additional micromanagement.

The first Diablo wasn't really all that. Hell, the only character c|ass that had much in the way of options was the sorcerer (or whatever it was called).

nah, i don't really HATE their games, per se. i loved SC and W3; D2 was pretty good. don't get me wrong, Blizzard is definitely better than most studios out there. but is it not also overrated? that's a big yessir imo. Blizz has its share of weaknesses, and their reportoire is far from perfect - just like every other studio out there. i don't hate Blizz for that, because if i do i'll have to hate IW, Rockstar, Square Enix, and many other studios as well.

what disgusts the hell outta me is how hypocritical and self-conceited blizz fans are. that's the problem right there. day in and day out we have to listen to these bozos telling us how CoD games are "rehashed", how EALA is "not innovative" and how every other mmo is "ripping off wow". and they do that while kowtowing, forehead on the ground and arms spread out in front, to the very studio that embodies what they so fervently criticise. call me over-reacting, but i really can't stand this ugly farce.

i think blizzard is super overrated. they have only made 1 game and 2 expansions for that one game (world of warcraft) in the last five years. there is no denying they make great games, but they make hardly any. where as other developers make much more:

valve = 14

bioware = 4 (and one expansion)

relic = 4 (and 5 expansions)

you dont seriously think that, do you? you want quantity over quality? blizzard games LAST for years too. you think portal and WoW are of the same level (in terms of content, price, resources spent)?

Well, this is one of those games that everyone loved that I just couldn't get into. Honestly though, I don't think I ever even played an hour of it, so maybe I just didn't give it enough of a chance. I barely remember this game; however, there was one person on Metacritic whose words seemed to sum up what I seem to vaguely remember thinking about the game way back when:

The game plays great and has a nice presenation (coupled with an amazing soundtrack). Too bad the rest of the game is linear and boring as heck. Being a war of attrition, tyhe game never reatches the status that makes StarCraft look up and think. TA is fun, but it's not a strategy game. It's an action game. Very little thought goes into selecting all your units and pressing attack, and no matter how nice it looks and plays, that very fact makes the game aged and whithered on the vine. That's why the AI sucks so bad, a well: the gameplay is not designed for thought process. It's for clicking really fast, and here is where you can see the beginning of the end for a lot opf modern franchises (like C+C). Unless you have the nostalgia, stay away.

As I said in an previous post, I also don't really like the Command and Conquer games all that much, if that's at all relevant.

Valve has made 14 games that I don't care about, since they are basically all first person shooters. :P

Wait, I take that back. I had a few hours of fun with Portal.

I was very pro-Blizzard when they finally announced SC2 and D3. Now I'm very anti-Blizzard due to the avalanche of dumb decisions they have made regarding these games. I hope they go bankrupt after releasing said games.

my bad, then. guess i was thinking of a "why blizzard sucks" thread. i'm a blizz fan, i suppose. if they disappoint with SC2 they will no longer be one of my fav devs (still hoping for awesome D3 whenever that may come). i like blizzard for what they've done so far, though i am starting to wonder how long they can keep this up (WoW seems to be going in a different direction). all i'm saying lets not bash them for things that haven't happened yet.

The fact that millions of people are playing their games, doesn't go very far to convince me that the games are great.

Millions of people listen to Britney Spears.

20 million people bought pet rocks.

And finally - tens of millions watch American Idol.

EQ had insane grinding, down time, and mob camping. That's exactly what Blizzard was trying to get rid of with WoW to make MMO's more accessible. It certainly worked. And before anybody chimes in with "WoW has grind too!" ... yeah it has rep grind, but nothing to the insane degree of EQ

How many people still listen to Britney Spears or buy pet rocks? In that regard, Blizzard games have greater longevity. (Spears might still have a lot of listeners but nothing like the start of her career).

So valve is hiring people with talent as opposed to losing them(blizzard)?

madrocketeer
Blizzard has simply replaced old talents with new ones, and they've simply been slotted right into the Blizzard system, which has been pretty consistent for many years. it's a like a sports team; players come and go, but the system remain the same, and people know exactly what their roles are in this system. When their games start getting bad reviews and/or flop out of the game stores like a pile of whale blubber, then we can talk about whether they're losing talent.

And the talent that Blizzard loses has pretty much fallen flat on their face. Look at Flagship...

EA is overrated, because unlike Valve or Blizzard, they don't deserve most of their attention. This is all people talk these days, Blizzard, Valve, EA, and maybe sometimes, Bioware, Relic.

IMO you're just tired of seeing Blizzard all over the place, you need your reagulars back, Valve and EA, because it's true, lately Blizzard got most of the attention, they deserve it.

they are overrated. their skill is taking established genres and refining them well. they don't seem to innovate much though. they play it pretty safe in that department. seeing what others did well then copying and refining those things.

Thats a pointless argument because there are a lot of people who play Blizzard games and enjoy them, so they are diverse bunch with different opinions. If you focus on the most rabid and devoted fans than nearly all companies are overrated.

I dont really know where the fans came in considering 'overrated' can mean a lot of things and so far it simply meant that their games are rated too highly and sell too well.

Anyways in this thread Blizzard fans seems to have held the high ground and did not go down to insulting an entire group of people as being 'hypocritical and self-conceited'

Well I think part of the reason HG:L turned out so bad at launch was the lack of polish that one would expect from a game with high production costs, which HG:L didn't really have. If they had the resources to test the game out more I think it would have been a very successful game considering how almost all the bugs were patched eventually.

Good topic, but I gotta say blizzard imo has been living up to the hype, i'll tell you why. I've really became a PC gamer maybe around 3 yrs ago( I use to be strictly console). I've gotten hooked on WoW and my cuz told me to try WC 3 and diablo 2. Maybe they are over hype, but they were the dealers that introduce me to the games that were the gateway drug into PC gaming universe.

As I said, I credit the system, not the individuals for producing these highly successful games. Talent don't mean a thing if you don't know how to put them to good use, and Blizzard simply has an excellent system of doing so.

[QUOTE="KHAndAnime"][QUOTE="AshieduNwadiei"]Is World of Warcraft different than a regular RPG once you get into it? As a lifelong console RPG gamer, I didn't get what all the fuss was about.AshieduNwadiei
All MMORPGs are different than regular RPGs - especially console RPGs.

To what degree I mean? It felt like a typical RPG with other people playing along.

The social aspect is the biggest part of these games. You can't raid in singleplayer RPGs, can you?

The gear is the biggest part of these games. You can't raid day in and day out with 24 other people and win loot they won't and rub it in their faces in singleplayer RPGs, can you?

Fixed :P

True  Not a big fan of MMORPGs myself, but they're definitely a different experience than single player RPGs.

Maybe I'll give a good MMORPG a shot, but I wasn't too impressed after the free trial of Warcraft.
