To TC:With all those mods and you didn't change that greenish/yellowish tint that Fallout 3 had? I thought that was the worst thing about Fallout 3. That was my first mod--fixing that god awful tint.

How did I know this was going to turn into a Fallout 3 console vs PC mod. I was actually expecting NV vs Fallout 3 also.Ā  Oh well. The last time I played Fallout 3 I had only about 10 of them forgot what they all were but the most important one was the one that changed my gameplay--something like "project reality" or something like that. Since I moved to Windows 7 my game couldn't run smooth anymore so I stopped playing it. I don't have the steam version but the boxed retail version. I had tried all the crap ini file fix such as the number of cores fix but it just doesn't run smooth. Everytime I go to a town or open a door that sends me to a loading screen it'll take about 2 mins just to load or crash. Vanilla fallout 3 was beast--I played that on my PS3 way before PC. Clocked in at 100+ hours then got the PC version and clocked in another 70+ hours. Good times. Great game.

Ā

robokill

Fallout 3 ENB didn't exist in 2011.

Ā

But today Fallout 3's visual curse has been lifted

Ā

can you tell me the settings you used to get the color/image quality like this? What mods made the colors like this and do you have to tweak them?

Ā

I think those are the default standard settings of Fallout 3's Midhrastic ENB mod.

Stagnant game design? Ā Says who? Ā You? Ā

Well, then it must be true.Ā

Funny how all of these so-called stagnatedĀ games are making some pretty big noise lately, huh? Ā Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, Divinity: Original Sin, Project Eternity, Chaos Chronicles, Dead State, Age of Decadence, Torment, Legend of Grimrock, Might and Magic X, etc., etc., etc., all say a hearty, and soulful "hello!"

Oh, and if all I liked were these so-called stagnated game designs then how is it possible that I enjoyed New Vegas?

Ā

P.S. What do physics and camera controls add to a RPG anyway?

l-lord

Answer my questions first.

Would I prefer an isometric, turn-based Fallout game? Ā Of course. Ā If you're asking if I only like stagnant game design, well, that's a bit of a loaded question, isn't it? Ā That'd be like my asking, since you like FO:3, if you only like poorly written and shallow games?

And, like I said, I enjoyed New Vegas so that kind of answers your question, too. Ā

Yeah the writting in Fallout 3 is nothing special. But keeping the isometric pespective in RPG games is technically a stagnant thing. Originally isometric was done because at times like 90's the technology couldn't afford to have a decent third person game without staring at like 3 pixels at every turn.

But using it now is nothing but a religious tradition except if the development team still can't afford up to date sophisticated technology.

Sometimes in terms of finance. The development team can't afford quality at the same level of quantity. So they focus on one.

The variety has a price and textures and physics multiply that price.

For example they can have a super linear high graphical RPG or a non linear low graphic RPG.

So usually if the development team is not rich If they choose quality, the game will have normal graphics and 30 minute long story.

In that case obviously they choose quantity and that is a good variety of weapons and quests with low graphics. So the isometric comes in handy there. To use the tradition as an excuse to hide all the ugly graphics.

But this is only an example of development teams that are really broke.

Developers like Bethesda can afford both qualities to be equal and don't have to deal with these dilemmas.

I would much, much prefer to have a 3D isometric Fallout over a FPS/TPS viewpoint any day. One that's turn-based, highly detailed, with a rotatable/zoomable camera, full physics, and destructible environments. Some games are much better suited for isometric....RTSes, for example. I loved the turned-based combat of the originals, and Fallout 3's hybrid system lent it a bit too much of an action-centric flavor. Fallout 1&2 felt very strategic in every choice made, and F3 and Vegas really didn't feel the same.

It really disappoints me that so many developers ignore certain genres of games nowadays such as 2D and isometric, which while true were created by necessity because of hardware limitations at the time, are nevertheless unique and enjoyable in their own right, and in many cases are preferential to the games the best of technology can afford today. Fallout would be a much better game using such a perspective with today's tech. It would be incredible.

It just seems that developers see that they can do so much with what the hardware can offer today that they MUST. I consider this insistence and refusal to harken back to the old days to be what leads to true stagnation.

All cars are enjoyable to drive in their own ways, not just the ones that use the most advanced parts and engineering.

I'm using Midhrastic ENB and find it the best one yet:

It is a system hog, though.

My Fallout 3 tends to have about 40 mods. I'd love to have more but then it would crash every 10 mins. It's a shame that the games are so mod friendly but so damn unstable even with barely any. tagyhag
both my FO3 and New Vegas crash about every 20 minutes or so without any mods at all. The engine sucks. I wish I could play New vegas smoothly without having to reopen the game 8 times in one sitting.

Bethesda should get an award for their environment friendlyness. They recycle everything.

Can't say. Ā I have a 670 and am running @ 60 fairly consistently. Ā There are drops depending, but overall it's smooth on ultra settings. Ā Cool thing about Midhrastic is that it's highly customizable through .ini tweaking. Ā Here's a YT vid that help explain everything, including installation, which is a bit in depth:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3JbM_PWqF4&feature=em-comment_reply_received&lch=email_reply&lc=Z_k6qO0fXqbRfTItC2rEdwajI0hjVSN2_JDovH9rQN4

and here's another from Gopher, a huge modder, on what he thinks about it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BP3timf65O4

It's SO much better looking it's not even funny. Ā Can't go back to vanilla ever again when I've seen ENB and NMC's texture pack running together. Ā I think your card should be ok, maybe turning down a few features would help.

Here's a couple shots of mine. All I have is NMC textures, a low-spec ENB I found on the nexus, and a couple weapon mods. Nothing else visual. Game doesn't take much to really look nice, and with more, it can look incredible. Gonna get back into modding the absolute shit out of it (and New Vegas) when I'm not working with a laptop anymore.

Nice shots. Ā I took this one a few days ago, now have it on my DT (sans HUD).Ā

The game can really look incredible. Ā This is the first time I've really done heavy modding. Ā It's great, only downside is that it crashes and freezes a hell of a lot, though I hear Fallout's engine is more susceptible to these problems than other games. Ā But the payoff is well worth it.
