"Borderlands, the highly anticipated RPG/FPS frpm Gearbox Software will be finding its way to Steam come October 26. While that doesn't come as much of a surprise, what came as a surprise are the extra goodies that will come along with that Steam package.

Steve Gibson of Gearbox confirmed to Destructoid that the PC version will include some little extras that won't be seen in the console releases of Borderlands. These features include export item cards to share the crazy guns you come across in the game in .jpg format. Also along with prettier graphics and a special inventory menu/system custom for the mouse, PC players will have access to timedemo benchmark software which is not included in the console versions.

Nice to know that the PC version of Borderlands being delayed isn't for no reason. PC gamers can sit back that extra week and then enjoy their cool extra features on their Goliath PC machines."

Sourcery.

Personally, I just think it's good to see Gearbox putting a good amount of effort into the PC version, despite whether these can be considered extras or not.

Gearbox has always cared about its PC audience. This game is going to be pure win, I tell ya. Also, Aliens: Colonial Marines! Yeeeea!

Thanks for posting this, this is definitely good news.

Those extras are WEAK. jpegs of guns? Weak. Prettier graphics? A given since it is on PC, and PC has always been their lead platform. Special Inventory system? Something that was required for the PC version to not suck. And the coup de grace, a benchmark. A goddamn BENCHMARK. Capcom has been releasing benchmarks for its games for free!! Still looking forward to Borderlands, but it was really low of them to try and pass off these silly things as "cool extra features."

The only noteworthy extra is the ability to export weapons. That was awesome in Spore.

Better graphics and proper interface aren't bonuses, they're requirements.

And what would the consolites do with a benchmark?

/agree with baranga. why would consolers even need a benchmark. They would have literally no use for it what so ever.

I wouldn't mind if developers were honest and said "Yeah, the pc version is being delayed as an anti piracy measure"

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they're spending the extre week optimizing.

As people have said, these aren't extras and that "news" story reads like an advert for steam. These aren't steam exclusives, right?

I agree, they are cellshaded how better the graphics could possibly get, how about moding capabilities like fallout 3? That would be cool.

I don't even have to go read it on Giantbomb to see it's a lot better. The extras might not be fantastic, but at least they're showing they CARE about the PC version. That's the most important part.

Maybe. I don't think they've talked about mod support at all though. And parts of the game are very colourful, they have just mostly been showing off screenshots of the desert-ish areas. If you look through the screenshots here on Gamespot, there are a few very colourful ones.

These "extras" are standard to almost every modern PC game in existence. Not much to brag about at all.

So when I go to Walmart to purchase a hard copy of Borderlands and install it, it will be using Steam?

Agreed. This 'gift' to us PC gamers is kind of a joke. It's pretty standard fare.

well there goes the resale value. maybe i'm being forced to wait for a sale now?

well, chances are, borderlands will be an amazing game of epic scale and immensely enjoyable gameplay. But if it isn't, sucks for us PC gamers who took the bait.

Really? It is going to use Steam? Even if I buy the hard copy?

This is fantastic!

That means it will be piece of cake to play online.

This is what I hated about FarCry 2. I can't even get the online multiplayer to work and I registered to the necessary website and everything.

This way it will be easy to play Co-op with buddies I am already friends with.

If it uses Steam as a DRM platform, that will really suck. I am mildly interested in this, will be awhile before I ever get it if forced to use steam on the retail edition...

What are you talking about, this is great.

This means that I don't have to go to a website, register an account, then register the game, then make a online profile, Blah Blah Blah.......

This way, I can immediately after installing the game play online with well known friends.

What is so bad about the Steam platform anyway?

Oh wait, I know what your ganna say, "It took Empire Total War forever to update or something before you can even start playing the darn game, same may happen to Boarderlands." To me, this is a small complaint.

No, problem I have with steam, is you do not really own the game. You are basically stuck with whatever you buy on it. Can't sell it, or give something away that you no longer play.

You can sell or give away the hard copy can't you? That is the whole point of a hard copy in the first place.

I got Left 4 Dead as a hard copy instead of a download on steam, like the rest of my steam games. If I unintall that, it should not show up in games with "not intalled" next to it.

hmm, well I have never bought a hard copy steam game, but I was under the impression that if a game is activated on steam, it is always linked to your steam account.

It is, thats the way steam works. I find it funny that people whine about how piracy hurts PC gaming, but think reselling a game after you played it is going to help the developers.

I don't remember anyone claiming selling games helps developers, but as consumers it should be something we are allowed to do. Look at the amount of used games for sales for consoles (not to mention rentals)

Rental places pay a premium on their games and movies, because the industry knows that they're losing potential sales. If you buy a game and are done with it. Shelf it. Dont go whining because you can't resell it when you're done.

Umm, but I can resell 99% of PC games, if I want to. Console have no problem reselling games, why should PC? Do you think you should not be able to sell your CDs, DVDs, or whatever else too?

[QUOTE="Nibroc420"] It is, thats the way steam works. I find it funny that people whine about how piracy hurts PC gaming, but think reselling a game after you played it is going to help the developers.Nibroc420

That is BS. If i buy a product i should be free to sell it when i don`t want it anymore. Without beeing called a whiner. Jeez dude. This doesnt hurt the industry, second hand games has been available since games started beeing sold in stores...

Pirating a game is very different from selling your game to a friend or on ebay.

How doesn't reselling a game hurt the devs? When do you send a % of the game you sold to the developers? Developers/publishers make X amount of dollars for every new game sold. When you buy or sell a used game they get nothing. THAT hurts the industry. and for someone to complain because they can't rip off the company that made the game (by selling/buying a used copy) IS whining. Developers get $0 for every pirated game. and guess what. Developers get $0 for every used game sold. Does the same amount of damage.

Yes, from the dev point of view, selling a used game, and piracy is pretty much the same. But one is legal, the other is not. Same can be said of any used market. Hey, lets make it illegal to sell your used house. That way the developers will get money every time someone wants to buy a house.

One week is nothing. But touting a mouse inventory system is ridiculous. That's stock standard and every PC gamer would complain otherwise.

Sorry, but your argument is ridiculous. If you buy any other product, you can sell it on and the original manufacturer does not get a cut of the sale. This practice has been going on for a very long time (like, er, a few thousand years), and that is how it should be, because it protects the consumer.

If you buy a music CD and don't want it any more, you can sell it on or give it away. Same with movie DVDs. Same with books. Same with just about any other product. The manufacturers just deal with it. So why should games be any different? There's no reason why they should, other than simple greed on the part of the publishers. Yes, there are some complications when it comes to purely digital media (such as downloadable games), but it is still not an excuse to ride roughshod over consumer rights.

How about you give a portion of your money to the builder of a house as well as the current owner? Pay a book publisher a fee when you get a second hand book from a charity shop? Or give a cut to the car manufacturer as well as the guy down the street who's selling his old car? It would be unfeasible and an untenable situation, and that is why it doesn't happen.

The games industry is not a special case, imo. If they want to sell more products, they should do what other industries do and expand their markets, and sell good products that offer added value to what has gone before.

Well it has if you press shift, but you only see your ammo and objective items, i wish it was like system shock 2 or dead space or resident evil 5. I really hated those "weird" ammo capacities.

we're talking about online games. and IMO a GOOD online game. or so it appears. My point is he's complaining because he can't buy/sell games that have already been activated in steam because the cd-keys are useless. You stating that "they should sell good products that offer added value" uh... what? thats illogical. it's like saying "if they threw in the bonus speaker system, i wouldn't have sold by car 5 years after buying it. All i'm saying is Developers see no $ from used game sales. Why on earth would they support it? and why would anyone who whines about Piracy on PC's hurting developers and the PC industry complain when they can't resell or buy used games? Piracy doesn't help PC gaming. Buying selling Used PC games doesn't help PC gaming. and yes. Both are Legal in some parts of the world.

It's almost sad that something like a proper interface for KB/M is nowadays considered "extra" for a PC game. Anyway, it's still good that they seem to give the PC version some attention too.

Steam is overall good for an online game makes things a bit easier and I don't mind not being able to sell it afterwards, but not being able to even borrow the game is a shame.

Steam does not really bother me all that much... Altho I am not a diehard fan either...

I do like my hard copys :3

but in the sea of DRM, and badly implemented multiplayer features that REALLY pleague this gen of pc games, it bothers me alittle less then if it was the last gen.

Well... atleast with steam youll never lose the game disc I suppose... not like Imgoing to forget my account anyways :S

But yeah I do miss the good old days before hour long cd keys (which effectively makes buying a used copy of a game a real gamble) or DRM.

I suppose times change, and we change with it -.-

BTW: Cant wait for this game :D looks so fun and nice ^^ I doubt that I will be dissapointed with it ^^
