So, what are your thoughts on camping in online shooters? I personally think that it's ok to camp. I mean it makes games more unpredictable. Finding camping spots and staying hidden requires some skill and patience, and if anyone is killed by a camper it's his own fault for not knowing how to play a game.

A LOT of people on the other hand get really upset when somebody camps, they're always screaming "camper noob" and what not... Anyway games aren't supposed to be fights between gentlemen, where everyone shows himself and take turns shooting like in 18th century duels etc. Not knowing how to deal with campers is in my opinion more noobish than camping.

The only online shooter I spend any time on these days is Quake Live. Campers tend to have short lives there.

It's fine, what's really annoying is when somebody has the opportunity to shoot you with their gun, and they pull out the CARL G AND ROCKET YOU IN THE FACE.

Depends if it's a TEAM holding a area OR someone that is 1 and 19 and hurting the team so he/she is taking a TimeOut so he doesn't do more damage to the team OR just so NOOB who can't play worth a darn and is hideing out. so it all depends on the SitRep

Well, one thing about the noobs is... they can't camp. They go down really easy so they aren't a problem. But if a good player camps, then imo he's just playing smart.

camping is the cheapest and most ridiculous thing you can do in fps games ...

its not fun
its not fair
its way to easy
its lame in overall
if every1 camps there will be silence and fps turns into splinter cell type game , most of mw2 servers turn out like that , sometimes it looks like you are playing alone even in match box sized maps ...

Indeed, all the campers know of a good spot where to hide. They are actually quite skilled and sometimes do it for the lulz (I do it time to time)

Camping is just as much a part of shooters, as any other strategy is.

Deal with it.

lol, its not a strategy , flanking and outplaying in various ways is STRATEGY ... camping is just cowardly way to get some frags and make your team loose . and thats the only way complete noobs enjoy the game !

Camping is fine in my book - it's not as if it's some godlike strategy that instantly grants you a k/d of 10+. Campers have it tough with revenge killers and other people. Often they don't even have a great score. I don't get why everyone b*tches so much about it.

1. That is a very subjective statement. 2. How come? 3. Nope, as I said, "noobs" get pwned anyway. Plus that's where grenades come in. 4. Again, why? 5. That may be true, but I rarely run into this problem. Then again, I have never played mw2.

Hunkering down in one spot that doesn't allow an opponent to out-flank you is a very legitimate strategy . Or are you going to call the Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae camping noobs as well?

I don't really have a problem with campers. They do their thing, I do mine. Knives are really the only thing that pisses me off. Getting flanked and taking a knife to the back is cool, but when I shoot you and still take a knife theres a problem.

Everybody can't go in rambo style. You also need guys behind you watching your back and protecting certain locations. I believe most of the complaints towards campers are aimed towards snipers. But, come on, they must fight you at long distance and catch you before you catch them and camping in a secure and secret location solidifies that.

Camping leads to nade/GL spam which can be annoying most of the time. Also camping using map glitches is lame (like that building in karkand - bf2) or using one way walls - usually outside the map boundaries- to your advantage (some maps in TF2).

BUT in some game modes camping is required in order to protect or babysit the objective, like in BC2 defenders in rush mode or terrorists in CSS (if you planted the bomb then you must defend it).

IMO if you camp and do not help your team you are being useless and should be kicked ASAP.

It depends on the game mode. If its something like Deathmatch, then everyone should be running around, or its more kills for me.

If its something like Search & Destroy, then camping is fine. You really expect to stay alive by running around in S&D?

It depends WHERE they are camping. Camping spawn points is cheap and annoying. (TF2 is especially bad for this) but camping in your own base (eg: An engineer in TF2) is a valid strategy, and in fact an important part of a team.

I like to camp to frag a few guys and piss them off! LOL! You can't camp all day anyways, you become a sitting duck. I just like to have a few hits incognito! makes me laugh. My favorite one was in quake 2, tho. Whit the grappling hook and the freezer gun. It was so funny to grab someone with the hook to bring it to you and freeze him in thy face in pieces! LOL! They don't make it this great anymore.

People camp so they can see the enemy first and not have to do anything to get kills Since when does camping take skill? Do you play fps? It is cheap, and it's not playing smart.. It's doing that because they have trouble getting kills any other way If its defending an objective, then I think its OK. Camping in a deathmatch game or tdm is being cheap and annoying to other players.

I know what you mean. I'm usually on the receiving end myself. I really suck at online fps. I love Crisis online, but the last time I played, I got 33 kills, and 100 deaths!!! Oh well, at least they weren't too rude to me about it, but I do love blowing away a camper. If they get me too many times, and I can swing around the corner fast enough with guns a blazing, I can get them. Sweet revenge kill.:D

I don't have a problem with camping, although it's damn annoying sometimes. I think it definitely has it's place in realistic shotters like BF2. It is a legitimite strategy, evn if it is simple. It works well, so where's the problem? If you say that it's not an acceptable strategy, you're just complaining about it, because you get annoyed at it (yes, it is annoying, and no, I don't generally camp - I prefer to jump in and kill as many as I can. It's proably one of the reasons I suck in multiplayer. I'm generally more strategic in SP, if I can take it slowly).

Camping doesnt take any skill, it doesnt necessarily make you a noob, however If your sitting around a corner with some automatic or a pro cylinder, your a noob. Its justifiable in certain areas, aslong as your not directly focusing in one place, that people need to go. If your in a building theres no problem, but if the game itself is feeding you kills because of spawns or something, then your a noob.

Camping only really bothers me if you are supposed to attack an objective like rush on BC2 and half the team is camping in the back with snipers only because they are too pansy to go in and try to arm the objective.

It not only makes it impossible to win a match when you're attacking, but makes it incredibly boring if you're defending.

Although, it is fun to run all the way to where they are camping and hit them from behind.

It depends. Is it that guy that just camps under something at the enemy spawn to get some kills, or to protect an objective?

also, camping is a valid strategy if used right. thats what flashbangs and smoke grenades are for, but you probably just run in front of campers judging from your comments.

camping for a reasonable amount of time is a good stategy, Left 4 Dead 2 is good example - camping for purposes such as cover friends while healing, camping in corner so enemy super zombies won't spawn behind you in some empy room; Counter Strike is another good example - camping with AWP for 15 sec max is good tactic to cover friends, as well to cover places where your friends didn't go for a bit longer time.

if a game promotes camping to a point where it hurts the flow of action, makes the pace of the game unnecessarily slower, or forces people into repetitive tedious motions (camper check every 3 seconds) then it's the game's fault or the map designer's, not the camper's.

Camping is anything else but not a strategy. It's a noobish way to kill a remarkable stronger opponent than you, by waiting for him and shooting him in the back. I don't know why most people voted for "strategy". Personally I ban the campers for an hour.

AMEN ! i remember when i had cs 1.6 server i added all possible plugins to prevent camping ,for example , if you actualy stay in one spot for 5-10 seconds you get warning and then you are slayed , if you do it 3 times you get 30 minutes ban :D

I don't mind it, personally. There wasn't some almighty being in the sky that came down and said, "Camping is forbidden." I always felt those complaining about it are the ones who have trouble with defeating people who camp. Then all they can do is complain. I pretty much play team-based CTF game modes with FPS's. Grew bored of deathmatch way back with Quake 2. Now if a game is simulating something from the real world (Battlefield series), then any camping strategy is viable.

this is because counterstrike is the kind of game in which if you die you wait 5 minutes for end of round before you can spawn again, and it just sucks to be killed by someone who you could never have seen. in something like ut2004 camping would only bring down the camper's score or hurt the the chance of winning for his team.

Camping is not a Noob tatic as i feel that if a camper is really giving u a miserable time in the game , it just shows that the camper has really good map awareness . In arcade shooters like MW2 and blackshot , Camping is also used to perform a feint tricking the person u ran (while u are sitting in a corner waiting to pump him full of hot lead) . Although Camping is not a noob tatic , I would probably call it a 'dirty' tatic . Its underhanded (backstabbing ) , but its simple and Effecient , so why not ?

Camping is for noobs. Back in CS 1.6 days only the noobs camped. If you were pro you moved about the map, even snipers didn't sit in one place for long. But I haven't really played a competitive shooter since Counter Strike 1.6. (What's this Modern Warfare b@!!$#!^ thing I keep hearing about? Seems like it's really popular among console owners (LoL).)

you guys have poor fps experience if your saying that camping is legit strategy , its not a strategy at all !

i bet you only play counter strike and cod games where camping has more benefits than downfalls and it acts as ultimate strategy - easy way to increase your kdr without any skill or brain ussage

Farkeman

And i bet you only play quick frag games á la Quake or Team Fortress.

Dude games such as those you mentioned require some type of "camping" as you label it, it is called strategy man. You can't run out and rambo it in such tactical games because you will get killed, and therefore not respawn until the next round.

It's building a strategy, in quick frag games, including deathmatch, i agree that camping can be quite frustrating as the respawn rate allows "rambo-ing".

Your argument is an unjust biased opinion.

I don't whine about campers but I do get the impression that they're mostly just KDR whores, which if it's a deatmatch type of game is fine, but if it's objective based I don't like it.

Personally I learned some camping playing America's Army, but I don't find it any fun in games where you respawn, I'm a rusher and like to get the objective.
