Hey guys, just bought my ASUS 4850 but my performance is not what I expected. I've been playing Crysis a lot and this is what I bought it for. Here are my results after the GPU benchmark.

Settings are: Everything at high, resolution at 1280x960, no overclocking.

I got an average of:

22fps on first run

30fps on second run

31fps on third run

This is quite different from this guy: http://youtube.com/watch?v=w7Gw7UiUq78&feature=related

My rig is pretty good (IMO): 2GB of ram, E6400 Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHZ, HD4850, XP 32bit, but my performance is so much worse! I was thinking of re-formatting my drive because it's so old but I don't know if it will help. Any help?

  • Wow... I really looked up to the R700 Series too, no I'm wondering if I should go back to nVIDIA?
  • Or iT could be the E6400 Core 2 Duo @ 2.13 GHZ?

They don't even have support for it on the drivers page. ARGGH I always have problems with my cards. First my crappy X1950 XT, and now my new one.

Thanks for that one, but how do I download it? I feel so stupid asking this but I can't seem to find a link anywhere.

Oh and should I uninstall my previous drivers for the hotfix? Or go right over?

Thanks. The problem was firefox. It would only work on IE. But then I get to the download link and it redirects me to AMD.com and says that I am unauthorized. Great.

I think my PSU is 600w, or 500w, which I believe is enough. I'm thinking of just getting an NVidia card but this card is supposed to be so good. I don't think it's a hardware problem either because everything works fine and the box was not damaged.

Anyway, read this, might help (near the bottom of the page has the links for the drivers and hotfix, I wouldn't suggest the catalyst 8.7 beta tho.)

Thanks. I finally got the hotfix downloading. Now the wait. I'll install and respond with what happens. This seems very similar to my X1950XT driver problems. Never got good performance from that card.

Sounds more like a CPU issue to me. Crysis does need a lot of processing power from your CPU.

Ok, it's installed and I'm about to run the benchmark but I have a few questions about what could be performance limiting:
1. Pci-e 1.0 instead of 2.0. I'm running 1.0.
2. My CPU.
3. My RAM is the lowest speed of DDR2 you can buy. Is this affecting anything?

Thanks.

Most likely it's the CPU. Try overclocking to around 2.6-2.8GHz and see what sort of gains that gives you.

Loop 2: 31fps avg.

Great. Worse than before.

Hey guys, just bought my ASUS 4850 but my performance is not what I expected. I've been playing Crysis a lot and this is what I bought it for. Here are my results after the GPU benchmark.

zombiefruit

I have an E2200 2.2ghz non-overclockable HP computer, HD4870, and my computer detects all 4GB, Vista 32-bit, and it runs worst than your PC. :( 30FPS is pretty good. That's more than playable. So now I'm going to build a new PC, because this HP computer is holding me back from gaming. I cant even overclock the CPU. Blah, stupid factory locked.

TC, your CPU is bottlenecking the PC. It should run better if you have a better CPU. It's happening to me as well. Did you download the most current Crysis patch? It will help. Some people recommended Cuban Ultima Doom Sword mod but I cant download because Microsoft.net security wont let me.. Double sad face. :( :(

Yeah, I run the Cuban configs, and I'm thinking of upping my CPU. Which ones are good? Also, should I get higher clocked RAM? or a PCI-e 2.0 mobo?

Ok, I just ran CoH all at high with some ultra, at 1280x960 and the benchmark gave me an average of 60fps, around the same as my X1950Xt, just a little bit better.

Yeah, I'm having second thoughts about this. I might return the HD4870 and a crossfire mobo I just ordered too. I think I'll go Nvidia.

But then again, you have a much better CPU and the 9800GX2 is a beast, especially with Crysis.

The problem is that when the 4850 performs the way it should, no other car beats it even close to it's price range (except of course the 4870). I don't have enough money for anything better.

Do you think we have faulty graphics cards? I was playing Crysis on 16x12 on high and it was laggy when all the enemies started appearing. I tried again, with the same resolution but medium/high settings and it ran a bit better. Still, medium settings is a shame. And anything lower than a 19x12 resolution takes away all the eye candy. I'm thinking about going Nvidia now because I just got this card so I can return it. The card makes this funny noise too while I'm running Crysis. I'll switch out for a 790 SLi mobo and I'll probably grab the 9800GX2, possibly quad SLi with another. If you noticed, most gamea are catered to Nvidia. Crysis is Nvidia friendly. A lot of other games are too except for Blizzard games which have really really low requirements for games. I made the wrong choice, looks like.

No sir. Lol. But I might as well now. :( Unless you crossfire the HD4870s, you wont be able to spank Crysis. The 9800GX2 is a better card than an HD4870. Price is the same, I think and Quad SLi 9800GX2 is ftw. I'm sending this thing back first thing Monday.

there's quite the price difference on the two in the UK :( Anyway, with the fact that it doesnt have it's own drivers yet, i'd expect to see improvements that way pretty rapidly. I'll test it out for myself though, still waiting on that motherboard replacement. It was sent back (to me) today, so monday/ tuesday should be a red letter day.

It's supposed to be such a good card though. I can't seem to understand the problem. Maybe my drive is fragmented...
I'm going to de-frag my drive, clean up as much crap as I can, run the tests again, and see what happens.

i wouldnt worry about it, the only game ATI cards have troubles with is Crysis, thats what i meant by "could just be the fact that it is an ATI card."

I havn't tried any other games but I'm downloading 3Dmark 06. I'm oing to try COH: opposing fronts right now.

Good idea, could just be the fact that it is an ATI card.

Yeah, I'm having second thoughts about this. I might return the HD4870 and a crossfire mobo I just ordered too. I think I'll go Nvidia.

But then again, you have a much better CPU and the 9800GX2 is a beast, especially with Crysis.

i wouldnt worry about it, the only game ATI cards have troubles with is Crysis, thats what i meant by "could just be the fact that it is an ATI card."

Yeah, but I have this thing with Crysis. I must "spank" Crysis, on very high. :P  Looks like the HD4870 in crossfire beats just about every card out there except when it comes to Crysis. Hopefully, new drivers will fix this issue?

it's been said crysis runs better under a 64bit operating system as well.kieran88

Hmm. Well, I should have my new build up and running. I'm just waiting for the CPU. If I dont like it, this thing is going back. I'm pretty sure it's also my CPU. A 2.2ghz dual-core isnt going to be able to handle Crysis. I'm pretty sure with my new build, with overclocking, I'll be able to take Crysis to the streets! :P

It is very likely we will see new drivers for both the 4850 and 4870 within a few months. Should increase crysis performance. If you want to spank crysis, to gotta overclock, cause no single card out there today will spnak crysis on very high (excluding the $500+ cards such as 9800GX2 exc.). As for crossfire, i would hold off on that. There is really no need to get another 4870 when one will play every game today maxed out (again, excluding crysis) with playable FPS. Hell even my 9800GTX will max out every game except crysis..

Yeah, I'd imagine so. I mean, the HD4870 is ment to be as good as it gets for the price bracket, except for (like you said) crysis. Depends man, there are so so many better games. However, I see your point. What CPU are you getting again?

Crysis is not a good benchmark to determine if your card is doing what it should. Crysis is CPU heavy and is optimized for Nvidia. Get 3d mark 06.. 3d mark 06 is GPU heavy so the majority of your score is going to be based around your video card. If you get a score of over 10k then your card is doing what it should. It's just your CPU bottlenecking.

Q9550. I'm waiting for the price to drop down to the Q9450's price. PRices are suppose to drop Q3 2008. Which should be later this month or early August. I'm going to overclock, that's for sure.

You're right. My CPU is definitely bottlenecking, like crazy. I still think I should wait around for the HD4870x2. I'll download the 3d marks and I'll post it on here. Thanks. :D
