[QUOTE="kieran88"]While it isn't an easy game I just felt it was a bit grindy instead of player skill based, I guess you could argue that it meets in the middle which is fair enough. Great game tho, really enjoyed it, the atmosphere is incredible.GameFan1983

Grinding are for god of war style players who don't learn from their mistakes, don't carefully analyze their surrounding, who likely just can't wait to jump out from their bonefires just rush into another certain death with their same dull and inefficient strategy that they already used many times, sad thing is, they firmly believed with the ability to tank up more damage and do more dps by increase level with grinding is only way to play the game while many other players could easily overcome the same obstacle at much lower levels.

Such scenario can be explained as a bad general leading a battle, the only way he knows how to fight is to infinitely increase manpower and ammunition waste to make his men charging straight on. while a good general with limited resource will ambush and frank. The thing with the bad general is, even he wins, it's still a bad victory which equals a defeat.

Half of Dark souls players never grind, the true joy of dark souls come from learning and adapting, fighting enemies with perfect timing, precision and execution. it's anything but grinding.

Yes, this game already has an easy mode = grinding to increase levels, co-op and archer built. mage built(this class really paid off late) they are options. those who needs SL 70+ to finish first playthough are beyond me

That's the point I was trying to make (granted, badly), it being so easy to grind and tank kills off any idea of it being a true skill based game. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it just detracts from it being 'one of the hardest games ever' as some would say.

Each enemy type is some sort of a puzzle, to be simple yet concise.

I think climbing the ladder in Starcraft 2 league is way more difficult.

^ Yes, indeed; most if not all enemies have the complex puzzle of "use shield, block attack, hit enemy with sword"

That's why you can just build a tank with a lot of armor and a great shield and you're basically immortal PvE-wise

Competitive MP is obviously more difficult than SP. That doesn't mean Starcraft is one of the hardest games ever made, it's just there is extremely stiff compition to play against.

Starcraft 2 is pretty easy to learn, actually. I just hope Blizzard provides more 'campaign to multiplayer transitional gameplay' in the future because beating the campaign, even on brutal, doesn't prepare you for the cutthroat multiplayer.

Having said that, the brutal difficulty in Sc2 lives up to its name.

I think Starcraft 2 and Dark Souls both fit into the 'easy to learn, hard to master' game type. ( I know they are of two radically different genres, but they share the same purpose)

UPDATE: I finished up buying it to give it a go (got it cheaper from a shop). Just played a bit last night. With the graphics mod the game looks fine graphically, the menus are sooooo console though (yuck!). The Controller works fine with it, just have to get used to the layout of the UI and I hate looking around with a controller. How the hell do I lock on a target?

On the xbox controller you press down the right control stick.

I bought the game for $12 during the Amazon sale and so far I'm not sure what to think of it. I've really only just messed around a bit so it's probably not fair to judge it yet. With the graphics mod it looks fine. I would have never paid full price for this lazy of a port but for $12 I'm much more forgiving.

They say it gets better once you get good weapons and armour (the design of these is well done). I don't have the XBOX Controller, just the Logitech Wireless F710. Maybe it doesn't work with that one.

i have never played a game with controller before, criticized the hell of the lazy port, said will never buy the game but bought during holiday sales and fell in love with it.!!!

imagine how difficult it was (and still is for certain things) for me. first time controller. could not rotate the darn camera, couldnt lock. lower my shield instead of hitting etc.. but after a while, you get better, and you see the beauty of the design and at the atmosphere of the game.

Really? How?

Try pressing 'start' when an enemy approaches you to lock the camera on the enemy.

Some basic:

1)The game's currency revolves around something called 'souls'. You acquire souls through many methods, but primarily by killing enemies.

2) The second most significant currency is called 'humanity'. Humanity is usually obtained by killing bosses, but even the lowliest rats drop it on rare occasions.

3) You will drop humanities and souls if you die. You have to return to your bloodstain to retrieve them back.

4) Weapons and armors have durability. Once its durability hits zero, a weapon or armor will be non-functional.

5) Yes, there are status ailments in the game.

6) Different weapons have different attack styles. Weapons have weight and reach.

7) It is possible to summon NPC before fighting a boss.

8) Firelink Shrine is your 'central hub'. You will return there many times throughout the game.

An aftermarket 360 controller is only $15-25.00 depend on your sourcing skill. I have a feeling you will quit the game at one point if you don't play with a controller. seriously. be stylish in your fighting style(though not nessarily a must to beat the game, you will miss alot moves and combos) survive in pvp, trap dodging etc. can't be done with a MS/KB.

Nah, I can't even hold the XBOX Controller, that's why I never got one. I use the Logitech one for FIFA mostly cause it's the same layout as the PS3 one, so when I go to FIFA Tournaments I sort of am already used to the controller. I'll keep playing DSouls with the controller for a few more hours to see if it grabs me or not.

Exactly. The dogs and the tiny room are what make that fight hard. Like I said, later on, you'll fight Capra Demons as regular enemies, in the Demon Ruins. Possiby up to 4 or 5 at once (unless you're careful about pulling them one by one), and they're no problem in that open space.

I noticed Dark Souls is how hard you make it. Some people play the game, arming themselves with only knowledge learned from within the game. These people are going to have a harder time. Other people will only attempt this (and some people won't attempt at all) and figure out the game's tricks after reading a few paragraphs on the internet and now the game's ezmode.

I am certainly playing the game by the 'in-game knowledge' methodology.

Stick with it...I gave up the first time I played and regretted it. I'm now about 50% through the game and to me it's one of the finest games I've ever played. If you enjoyed games like Metroid, Castlevania, and stuff like Zelda I think you will really enjoy it. It reminds me a lot of Arx Fatalis too...at least atmosphere wise.

Do you also have your health capped at half? If I'm thinking of the right thing, that happens when you get killed by curse. Then you have to buy an item from the merchant on top of the church in the undead parish to cure it.

I know, but I cherish the great feeling I get when exploring a perilous new zone, and New Londo is certainly inhabited by many wondrous perils.

That's why I love it, it doesn't allow you to aimlessly run and gun like most of today's games, you actually have to think and stay on your toes all the time.

Really depends on your playstyle, but for pve for a first timer i'd suggest going the tank route. Start as Knight, increase faith to 12 for the heal miracle, str to 16 for drake sword and eagle shield, and split the rest of your points between end and vit. This will get you through fairly easily to Anor Londo. Then you'll need to figure out what you want to use as far as weapons go, since the drake sword will be sub-par by then. I'd suggest a lightning claymore with a chaos bastard sword as a back-up, as both require no additional investment in either str or dex.

I have always chosen the knight, in demons souls and now in dark souls. Its a good character, they can take a beating but they tend to be slow (supposing you wear heavy armor). Anyways dude, you have to get into this game. Trust me you wont regret it one bit. And yes the game is punishing, but in a good way. An as stated before, dont get frustrated, anyone can beat this game.

This game isn't too grindy, you shouldn't need to grind souls to become over powered for every encounter. I actually found ds to be too easy, I've beaten it a few times and once you've beaten it once, ng+ and ng++ are simple. Don't get me wrong, I loved both demon souls and dark souls, I'm a fan and Looking forward to ds2, but I hope it's more difficult.

it wont be. it will streamlined just as da:o to da2 or TW1 to TW2. This is the fate of the good games. They need to be adapted to the general public who only plays Call of Duty

Dark Souls is a joke once you learn the mechanics. They should have provided higher difficulties.

[QUOTE="-Origin-"]This game isn't too grindy, you shouldn't need to grind souls to become over powered for every encounter. I actually found ds to be too easy, I've beaten it a few times and once you've beaten it once, ng+ and ng++ are simple. Don't get me wrong, I loved both demon souls and dark souls, I'm a fan and Looking forward to ds2, but I hope it's more difficult.tanerb

WTF are u talking about? I've only played a bit of Dark Souls but played TW1 and TW2, they aren't streamlined. They have all the RPG mechanics you would want from one. People just whinge about anything these days.

Simplified in where? Sure, they changed the UI and combat system but I wouldn't call it "simple".

TW2 is cheap, it's not difficult.

There are too many of them these days, so the death of one of them shouldn't be mourned.

Pretty sure you're missing the point here bud. Quake live is one of the true FPS in the genre, one that remained true to it's ancestors. How could you senselessly say that quake live should die while there is actual real crap out there that's ruining the genre, such as cod, blops and halo. But mearly you stating that if any fps should fall off, that it should be quake live, tells me that you're of poor judgement and poor taste.

I didn't specifically mention Quake Like. Let me reiterate my statement: A death of any FPS, no matter how good it has been all these years, doesn't bring about a sense of deprivation in my soul since there are too many FPS to choose from. The abundance of FPS in the market gives me a nausea.

I absolutely love the Souls games. Once Dark Souls came out, a lot more people were talking about it since it was on the 3 major platforms instead of just PS3 exclusive and I noticed so many people talking about how hard it was. I knew it was hard, but I couldn't understand people that started it and then couldn't take it anymore. I was even more surprised to find out that the way I chose to play it just so happened to be like the hardest way to play it. I went with the Warrior class and went with the strength build. I didn't use a single bit of magic and I never got pyromancy. I was strictly just a melee fighter. Going through the game like that was really hard, but I still managed to pull it off and it was one of the most satisfying experienced I've ever had in gaming.

I hear it's a lot easier if you put a few points into other things and get some spells and miracles and I heard that pyromancy was extremely over-powered when the game came out but has since been patched to lower the damage to a reasonable amount.

I'm dying to play the game over again because I got the DLC for it. I'm basically just waiting until I have the time to dedicate to that game so I can fully enjoy it. I recommend this game to anyone who thinks they are good at video games, thinks they can take a beating and not be demoralized, or thinks that games don't easily make them nervous.

Dark Souls is actually my third favorite game of all time, falling behind only to Ocarina of Time and Metal Gear Solid.

I believe that playing and completing Dark Souls is a must for hardcore gamers.
