This game is a lot better if you mess with the files and you can make the graphics WAY better and the shadows tons better by editing them, also vsync is in there as well.

visceron
Exactly what files do I need to mess with?

They are in: Documents\DeadIsland\out\Settings you need to edit the Video.scr file, but you need to convert it to text format to do that and then when you are done, you have to save it back in the .scr format and then make it a read only file so the game doesnt reset what you have done when you start it again.

That may be something as simple as your sound card drivers. Try giving them an update :)

Nope. Let's see... EVERY single game I have has 0 issues except this game. Not to mention that a lot of people who use USB Headsets are having the same exact issues.

Is your headset logitech? Try disabling and 5.1 or 7.1 settings you have set and just use stereo

Coop in this game is awesome. Me and three other people were just speeding around the streets with four cars, decimating zombies and ramming each other off the road.

What do you guys think of the death system? the fact that there is almost no penalty for dying, apart from a few bucks. And you can still find all your thrown weapons when you re visit the area.

Also I would like to add that stomping on a guys head is the most satisfying thing ever

Razer Megalodon... I only have 7.1 Option. I can switch to 2.0 from the control which has the built-in soundcard in it, yet it still gives me the crackling popping noises.

Weird cos the solution I gave was on a site somewhere. True there are a lot of problems with the game, lets hope they get fixed quickly

Yup, I'll restart this game when they fix this annoying bug. I can tolerate the weird animation when you check your shadow, I can tolerate the fact that I have to disable my second monitor (even though I've set the Monitor option to -1 in video.scr) but this sound problem, I can't, I fear it's going to ruin my headset plus it's rather annoying.

I would've raged if it was anything worse... been dying a lot in the city :) Losing a chunk of cash and knowing that I died is punishment enough.

Anyways, all I can really say about Dead Island is that it is the best zombie game I've played (hell, it's one of the best pieces of media revolving around zombies period in my opinion) and right up there with the best games I've played this year. raven_squad

i kinda agreev i dont know why i liked it so much.

Still the equip breaks way too often

You guys should visit the Steam Forums and learn how to tweak this game up. After I tweaked/quick fixed Dead Island, I've been very happy with the results.

1. You can tweak the video.ini file.

2. Remove the stamina hud
3. Remove flashlight hud
4. Remove pose indicator hud
5. Remove crosshair
6. Up the shader to 5
7. Up the FX Quality to 4
8. Disable Bloom
9. Disable Blur

10. Get rid of stutter, fps lag from Keyboard input lag (this still hasn't been address by the developer)

11. Increase shadowmapsize

12. Enable Vsync

13. Postprocess

14. Increase shadows and texture quality

And many more. I can tell you guys with 100% confidence that the game not only looks so much better but it plays better without the huds. I've never liked the hud styl.e of Dead Island because it breaks the immersion. And you'll be glad to know that this will not cause VAC-ban. It has already been confirmed by Techland on Twitter.

This game is a total clusterF'up, poorly done port. Most of these things should of been properly implemented or fixed in the final PC version for such a near AAA game like this. If this was $20 budget or indie game I could understand but it isn't.

I hear ya and I totally understand where you're coming from. It was frustrating the first few days from launch but they've released some patches since then that addressed many issues. I can honestly say that my Dead Island game runs almost 100% except for that keyboard input lag = stuttering. The rest is just for your graphical liking, just like when you tweak video ini files for other games. Don't let it's horrid launch sway you from buying the game because it's such a good one and it shouldn't be missed! :) I can tell you honestly again that many people who hated this game with a passion because of the bugs and issues that they've gone from crazy anger to really loving this game. They have released patches that fixed the multiplayer (it's now playable), among other things. I would say, don't give up on Dead Island, it's a great game.

A new one for me was going into an abandoned house and the loading screen never disappeared. Then I hit the windows key and when I got to the desktop it said it couldn't find one of the interior files. So I closed that window and when I went back in game the loading was finished and I continued playing.

Also thanks elann for the advice will try these things out

Beach balls! Every resort has a beach ball but what happens when you kick it... its like kicking a rock. It moves about 5 metres and doesn't bounce. What happened to phsyics.Drumlegend

Haha kinda does. But have you guys thrown a pack of juice down the highway road on a slope? That thing rolls better than a beachball

There are almost no physics in the game anyway. It would greatly benefit from a good system though. If things had proper weight etc. to do more damage.

What I find funny is that there are so many bugs and glitches with this game and I still love it. Im about 10 hours in and not bored at all. Just goes to show that at its core its a great game with great mechanics. And you don't need the best graphics to be great. Sure they still look good in some areas but its not gonna win any awards for its graphics. This game is good old fashioned gaming 101

Also remember that beach balls do that anyway. They fly really fast for a split second and then the air catches them and they kind of float. no matter how hard you kick them

You're welcome. If you can wait, I will make a thread with all the tweaks/fixes that enhance the game immensely. I'm at work right now so I kinda have my hands tied. Regarding the interior files, have you messed with any of the data files by any chance? Even then, I am not surprised considering the state the game is in. It's gotten better and better since launch day but there are issues that linger.

Cool I'll wait patiently for it :) Sounds like a good idea too to have all that stuff in one place.

No I didn't mess with anything at all. Just a bug I guess. It only happened once though because I entered the house a few more times after that without a problem. Its definitely improving alright. But I am still loving it with all the problems. Its a flawed masterpiece in my opinion

I've never seen a game have such a terrible release. The european release seem to be even more chaotic than the US one.

The physics system doesn't seem THAT bad. Like a regular kick will only make them stagger, but a running jump kick will knock a zombie over. And you can do zombie bowling with a propane tank, kick their legs out from under them.. whereas small weapons will damage but won't stop their advance.

I'm only giving an opinion and that is that I am really enjoying Dead Island. More than I thought I would. Maybe it does have all those technical shortcomings but I don't notice because I'm focussed on the game. And it's a good-un. I won't win any 'industry' game of the year awards, but at the moment it's winning mine. 8)

This. I like the damage and physics system. You attack them but they still advance unless you kick them. Even them, that only makes them stagger a bit. Kick 'em enough and they will fall, but expect zombie vengeance. When the sprinting zombies come at you, and there's multiple ones, it can get really difficult. I found myself pumping my arm with first aid several times to survive an attack. Either that or I was doing it wrong. It's fun though!

That aspect of the physics is good but im talking about objects around the world. Like in a room if everything was interactable it would be cool. But im glad that the dead bodies have physics too. Most times I just run and kick guys on the ground to see if they will stand up or not. And when you kick first then you can crush their skulls much faster :P

You bring up a great point. This game lacks interactivity. Even though it may sound dumb, I'd like to kick a beach chair and see it fall over. I'd even like to pick it up and smash zombies in the face. That would be cool. Although the devs thought of some great ideas, they simply the lack the basic ones and that mostly ties down to physics.

The physics system doesn't seem THAT bad. Like a regular kick will only make them stagger, but a running jump kick will knock a zombie over. And you can do zombie bowling with a propane tank, kick their legs out from under them.. whereas small weapons will damage but won't stop their advance.MyopicCanadian

At least one of the characters (the one I picked...the asian woman? Wow, okay, 11 hours in and I don't know my own character's name) can get the ability to follow up those kicks with an insta-kill kick to the head.

Actually, that attack is so good that if I'm ever facing off a zombie one-on-one, I usually just kick them to death to save my weapon durability. Also, well-timed kicks can sometimes break thugs' attacks, leaving them open to my machete while they stand around roaring.

You bring up a great point. This game lacks interactivity. Even though it may sound dumb, I'd like to kick a beach chair and see it fall over. I'd even like to pick it up and smash zombies in the face. That would be cool. Although the devs thought of some great ideas, they simply the lack the basic ones and that mostly ties down to physics.Elann2008

Exactly my point. It would sell the games atmosphere so much better if you could pick up stuff and slow down hordes with them. I know you have crates and stuff but I would have like more. There was one point that I tried to kick a chair and teleported on top of it. Then I got stuck in mid air on top of the chair and couldn't break free. So I had to restart the last checkpoint. If they had interactable physics on a lot of objects like said chair then it wouldn't have happened. Im not putting the game down in any way because I actually adore this game. But there are some things like this that would have made the game one of my favourites ever

Yeah, Xian... I'm using her as well. My friend was like "the kick is OP!" and then we got to the city... man you use every tool at your disposal there :D She also gets an upgraded version where you don't spend nearly as much time in the animation Very handy...

With Logan I got a stomp. Don't know if its exclusive to him. But at first it takes a long time in the animation where he stomps twice, Then at a certain level he just jumps on their heads. And it is also very handy. Stops me wasting my weapons health

Yeah, Xian's fully upgraded stomp is extremely useful, gotta save every tiny little bit of weapon durability. Plus the animation is just satisfying as hell. :P

I'm at about 23 or so hours on this save file and I'm not even half done yet. Exploring and sidequests are just too enjoyable for me to proceed through the story missions without searching every nook and cranny. I am really excited to move on and see the next area though after what a huge step forward the city was.

What are everyone's favorite weapons to use primarily? I've got a high voltage heavy splitting axe that I usually pull out when I want to do some fighting. Otherwise I'll stick to the quicker cruel military machete.

Similar to mine - an electrified (but lighter/faster) axe and a poisoned cleaver are my two main ones at the moment, but that's mainly because I've been saving up my best machetes and sickles for bigger fights.

Same.. been playing with a friend and we've hit about 55% according to the game, and probably 25 hours or more in. With so much area to explore, it's so easy to get sidetracked.

In terms of main melee weapons, I have an upgraded high voltage axe and a Cruel Military Machete, but I find myself scrounging as many materials as possible for explosives, which I use almost as much as my melee weapons. Molotovs, deo-bombs and explosive throwing knives. So much fun to blow zombies up...

Really anoying how that lady wants water so badly, saying that she is ultra parched, but theres energy drink right next to her on the shelf????? I mean, Come on, whats up with that??? I also agree that the weapon degrade way too fast, I like to keep my favourate weapon at the time but no, it breaks so fast unless I repair it every 5 minutes.

Still having fun though and have jumped a few times.

They're forever condemned to be the Russian voices for Western videogames. If there's a title featuring Russians, you bet your ass you'll hear them. And some of them are actually born in the USSR and still live there - doesn't stop reviewers and gamers from complaining about "fake accents" though.

I'm playing with the black guy (Marvin from Pulp Fiction lol) and I mostly use a mace with Impact mod. I keep a sickle close for cutting Thug limbs, and it's also useful when I'm surrounded - I chop heads easily. I like that the weapon restrictions are very relaxed.

To an un enthused person this might be what the game seems like. But its a lot more diverse than that. The combat can be as deep as you want it to be really. You can just go in hacking at everything that smells like a brain gobbler or you can plan it out before you go in. Run jump kick one guy, slash the arm off another, kick another guy to the ground, chop the head off another and then viciously stomping on their heads. The options are there to do what you like. The missions are actually very varied which is shocking for an open world game this big nowadays. And the RPG elements work well. Especially weapon customisation.

i've found that that particular approach stops being useful once you reach act 2. if i dont think through everything i'm about to do, the zombies wreck me. then i lose the money i need to repair my good weapons, which means they break, which means the zombies are free to keep wrecking me honestly, did anyone else find that the difficulty spiked a ton after leaving the resort?

Yes, I died the first time in the city. It's so unnerving, especially now that it has a weather cycle! And hearing the zombies wailing all around me drives me insane. Those dark, narrow alleys, especially when it rains... Jesus Christ. It's like a gigantic Stalker laboratory, a goddamn nightmare.

Wait.. so there ARE weather cycles in the game later on? I'm about 10 or so hours in...and I haven't gotten to that part yet (so if you could please leave out any spoilers :) ) Yeah, the game's zombie audios are insane... a couple of zombies really made me jump in this game. Like genuinely startled me.. I don't think a game has done that to me yet... not even Amnesia.
