Let me see... where do I start... the main character is a merc working for a huge corp. If you do not think soldiers and others in that field smokes, then you my friend have never seen the army.
Also as been brought up, the main character also is in a sense of depression and a world of hurt, he was never asked to be augmented, but if the EG story is true (and it seems fairly convincing) he would have died on the job, if not the corp gave him a replacement body.
Well I am not sure about you TC, but If I had my body taken away, by a multicorp, effectivelymaking metheir property, had suffered a great deal of trauma, and worked in a field where smoking will kill ya, but bullets are far more effective... Then I might take up smoking and drinking aswell.
It is cyberpunk afterall (and man am I glad it ended up like real Cyberpunk not the DE:IW sci fi gruel) Where the main characters are always marginaliced people at the gray areas of society. So I bet smoking aint a very noral thing to see, but certainly there will be people smoking, if the world is goverened by Corperations, and some of them have interests in any kind of tobacco, do you think there would be any anti smoking campaigns going on? besides... Lungs can be replaced there...
On that Note, and TCs somewhat odd outburst, I would say that I too got a "wtf" thing going on, It looks very little like The Deus ex I know.
Rather it seems way more like a mix between: Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, and Syndicate... Not a bad mix really, it was far from what I expected, but this is a pleasent surprise, and the info so far makes me vaguely optimistic.
Edit: I think the point I tryied to make was: a character smoking, for no reason other then smoking, would not be beneficial for the character, A character smoking for reasons known and somewhat accepted by the masses, is another thing entirely. (and yes if you have mental instabilities the chances of druguse of any kind; smoking, drinking hard drugs wil be much much higher then the norm)
