Just started to watch the trailer... cybernetic implants, check. It's 2027, check. The dude lights a cigarette, che....WTF??!

It's supposed to be 17 years into the future and people are still smoking? Where I come from it's already rare for guys to smoke.
Also, it's apparent that the character is doing it just for the "coolness". C'mon! When was the last time smoking was cool... the 80s?
Is Marlboro a sponsor for the game or what am I missing? Good job developers, promoting smoking... nice.

I actually feel embarrassed for the devs...

The only thing to "...wtf?" about is this thread.

Really, it's completely pointless and unnecessary.

Just as pointless and unnecessary it is for the guy to smoke in the game? It's a pretty pathetic way to try (and fail) to create a cool atmosphere for the game, and really it just makes me think that the game won't be a any good if they have to use cheap tricks like that.

my thoughts were that the character was under a great deal of stress and suffers from a bit of depression, and that is why he smokes (and drinks, which you failed to notice apparently).

And is this seriously a legitimate gripe, or are you just...idunno, another one of these antismoking tools?

If such thing as smoking upsets you that much...why not just avoid the game altogether? This is truly the most pathetic reason to hate the game though...

I don't smoke but personally I'm glad it's in the game.

I say **** you to all the annoying rights activists that try to get these things censored out of game. It reminds me of Isaac Asimov and his Robot/Foundation series where people almost always had a cigarette on hand. I like it, it's classy.

People that smoke are getting fewer and fewer, and 17 years into the future there will be even fewer people that smoke. I just felt that it's stupid for the game character to smoke when it's obviously just to make him look cool which fails miserably and ends up making him look like a moron. I mean really... people that smoke

Furthermore as I explained above, a quality game shouldn't need such cheap tricks to build hype/atmosphere/whatever, therefore this puts the whole game into question. Yeah, make him smoke, shows he's a badass dude.... :|

it is ironic, in a sense, that the TC is so upset about smoking he believes smoking wont exist in the future. That is the kind of tyranny, the kind of dystopia, that Deus Ex represents.

So in a sense, I suppose he is right...the future government in the Deus Ex universe would be so corrupt, so "Big Brother", and so limiting of small pleasures (smoking, alcohol, red meat, etc), that they would ban it.

Seriously??? The trailer was awsome,so I suppose you had to get really anal to actually find fault.

I'm an ex-smoker,who'll hopefully never touch another "ciggy" again, and someone who feels a quiet sense of smug satisfaction when I see people light up.

But god I really despise people with you're agressive and tyrannical views.

Do you think that a guy like that, a guy that probably failed in life, ended up trash that society or anyone else doesn't want, mad at just about everything that lives for everything wrong cares about what others think about him? or he smokes just to look cool? That's like saying "Freddy smokes (more like was smoked) just because he wants to look cool". People that smoke don't want to look cool or more mature, those that are not teens, teen smoking is picked up by stupid kids that want to look cool and mature (hated some friends for that because smoking is just stupid) but that is only the first stage, after it becomes routine it's not about being cool and mature, it's a terrible addiction a disease something that they can't stop from doing, doing it for their image is last on their list, not all people remain teens.

Is your behind hurting? A lot maybe? People really whine about anything these days, it's incredible. If you think there are only a few smokers left you've obviously never left your country. There'll be cigarettes in a 100 years, if you have something against it it's your problem.

What's your problem?

I'm not interested in this game since SE has their hands on it but you're just being annoying.

If smoking bothers you so much that you had to make a thread about such a meaningless detail and even going into calling it a cheap trick and use it as somewhat vague point to say the game "won't be any good", the only pathetic thing I see here is this madness you keep bringing forth.

Going a bit off-topic here but nearly everyone I see smoke nowadays seems ashamed of it, and frankly they should be, who in their right mind actually pays to smell bad and get a good increase for the chance to get seriously ill?
Almost no one starts to smoke as an adult, so being depressed and whatnot as a reason for starting to smoke doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
And while I don't care about the smoking per se I wouldn't want to play as a stupid looking character, not to mention that it just isn't cool, rather it's quite the opposite.
And if I was a tool I'd rather be a anti-smoking tool than a pro-smoking tool.

Let me see... where do I start... the main character is a merc working for a huge corp. If you do not think soldiers and others in that field smokes, then you my friend have never seen the army.

Also as been brought up, the main character also is in a sense of depression and a world of hurt, he was never asked to be augmented, but if the EG story is true (and it seems fairly convincing) he would have died on the job, if not the corp gave him a replacement body.

Well I am not sure about you TC, but If I had my body taken away, by a multicorp, effectivelymaking metheir property, had suffered a great deal of trauma, and worked in a field where smoking will kill ya, but bullets are far more effective... Then I might take up smoking and drinking aswell.

It is cyberpunk afterall (and man am I glad it ended up like real Cyberpunk not the DE:IW sci fi gruel) Where the main characters are always marginaliced people at the gray areas of society. So I bet smoking aint a very noral thing to see, but certainly there will be people smoking, if the world is goverened by Corperations, and some of them have interests in any kind of tobacco, do you think there would be any anti smoking campaigns going on? besides... Lungs can be replaced there...

On that Note, and TCs somewhat odd outburst, I would say that I too got a "wtf" thing going on, It looks very little like The Deus ex I know.

Rather it seems way more like a mix between: Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, and Syndicate... Not a bad mix really, it was far from what I expected, but this is a pleasent surprise, and the info so far makes me vaguely optimistic.

Edit: I think the point I tryied to make was: a character smoking, for no reason other then smoking, would not be beneficial for the character, A character smoking for reasons known and somewhat accepted by the masses, is another thing entirely. (and yes if you have mental instabilities the chances of druguse of any kind; smoking, drinking hard drugs wil be much much higher then the norm)

Hey, I will let you in on a little secret

Smoking makes you feel good.
Smoking tastes good
Some people enjoy the smell of tobacco, just like some people enjoy the smell of BBQ or a campfire
Smoking and drinking is a wonderful combination
Smoking after a good meal or after sex is also great
Smoking is an incredible stress reliever
Smoking is good for socializing, the best conversations I have had have been over a pint of beer, a cup of coffee, or a cigarette.

Contrary to popular belief, there are actually logical, reasonable causes to people smoking.

As for the whole "smokers look ashamed" well, I can relate...we know it is horrible for us, we know it will likely kill us, and we know it bugs people. I am a very self-concious smoker, I really feel bad when I am smoking in a quiet spot and someone walks through my smoke. I also know I should quit. But, dammit...it is just too enjoyable and too hard to quit

You are completely right to detest smoking. It is a bad habit. If I ever caught my kids smoking, or had a good friend try a cig for their first time, I would slap them silly

Just dont make it such apersonal issue.

Thanks, finally an on-topic answer, and civil too, you know it's rare these days.
I guess I can - so to speak - swallow the smoke a little easier now.

Still makes him look like a dork though

Should I make a topic for him drinking?Maybe you could come up with a theory that explains why the game sucks because of his glass of whiskey....

Just dont make it such apersonal issue.mrbojangles25

It really isn't anything personal, it was just a wtf-moment when I watched the trailer, the smoking felt out of place and "old" for lack of better words. Smoking isn't cool nowadays and it will be even less cool 17 years from now.
We see scenes of very high technology which have apparently become possible in that short a time but people are still smoking, I guess it was the contrast in huge change versus no change that caught me off guard...

fair enough.

I think for a cyberpunk, film noir game smoking is entirely appropriate.

I can buy that, but - and this is completely off-topic - I don't really feel that this game has the right cyberpunk feeling to it, it feels too clean and perfect, just not as run down and gritty as I like it. But then again this isn't actual game footage so I'll still keep the door open for the game..

Anyway, thanks for keeping it civil.

Yo I just want to post in this epic thread. I'm extremely tired and took a break from work, only to see someone claiming that in 17 years very few people will smoke. I'm either hallucinating or this is the best thread made today.

I dislike the smoking cliche also, but it's not unrealistic.

Lol the smoking was your issue with the trailer? Mine was the fact that the trailer seemed to have zero in common with the original game and way too much in common with a certain other FPS. Seriously I hate when devs use an existing franchise only to create something completely different, of course it's all about marketing in the end. Real shame :(

[QUOTE="GazaAli"]wtf are YOU talking about mate :PGazaAli

People that smoke are getting fewer and fewer, and 17 years into the future there will be even fewer people that smoke. I just felt that it's stupid for the game character to smoke when it's obviously just to make him look cool which fails miserably and ends up making him look like a moron. I mean really... people that smoke

Furthermore as I explained above, a quality game shouldn't need such cheap tricks to build hype/atmosphere/whatever, therefore this puts the whole game into question. Yeah, make him smoke, shows he's a badass dude.... :|

Looking at it from this angel definitely make some sense. It reminds me of MW2 and its cheap tricks to make the characters and the game look 'Epic".

It's comparing the augmentations to Icarus...

Sooo . . this character is what?

He's a moron?

He's out of shape?

He's going to die because he poisons his own lungs ?

'

I agree with the TC - it's almost as if this game is being sponsored by some slimy tobacco company.

If you've been reading up about the game as much as I have you would know that there is actually going to be more rpg elements in this game then there was in the first.

Please elaborate on that. I stopped following Deus Ex by the time they anounced a cover system and Auto healing (aren't we supposed to have augs for that?)

They said that the cover system benefits stealth players tremendously, and the auto healing system was added because they felt that it was practically already in deus ex 1. When I get back to my other computer I'll maybe post some scans or something.

Eurogamer posted three articles about it today, they're on the front page. It's stunning. By far the most interesting thing is how they merged skills and augmentations:

You'll have enough money to buy all the basic augmentations if you want, but when it comes to the XP points that you use to unlock the abilities within a given augmentation - you won't have enough to max them all out.

Plus if you choose to spend money on cool weapons that you won't find lying around in the world, then that's less money to spend on augmentation.

Yeah they really made it so you could have a different gameplay experience each time you play though the game. They also stated something like every npc will have some sort of unique dialog beyond some one sentence thing they sort of spit out. The conversations were also supposed to have more branching paths.
