I was just pondering how much exactly it has cost people over the years to play World of Warcraft.

So i did the math. Some of this may be wrong i dont play wow so i dont know if the prices have changed over the years.

The game came out Nov 24, 2004 and the first month was free so lets say you paid the first monthly payment January of 2005.

Thats 5 years ago or 60 months.

Monthly plan

60x15=900 *899.4

Three month plan

60x14=840 *839.4

Six month plan

60x13=780 *779.4

Now i have only done the math form January of 2005 to January of 2010.

So i would estimate that if you were on a monthly plan by now you would have paid over a thousand dollars to play wow. (this does not include the price of the game or any tax)

No wonder they call it wow.

It's not too bad if it's your only game. I don't play it now, but when I did I usually wasn't playing much else. In other words, in the years that I didn't play WoW I generally spent about $150 a year on games and expansions. In the 2 years when I only played WoW, I spent $156 ($13*12 months) per year. So for me it was pretty much the same those years. However, I eventually got bored with the gameplay (endgame is either boss grinding or honor grinding) and had to quit. Oh yeah, I should add $20 a year for the WoW game/expansions(on average). Still similar numbers though.

I bet if you added up every game-related thing you have bought for 5 years it would be similar.

When I played WoW, it was my only source of electronic entertainment. Didn't watch TV or buy other games during those years, so its a pretty damned good bargin if you ask me. I think I spend much more on gaming ever since I quit playing, to be honest.

You didn't add the price of the actual game. So it would have been higher than 156. Now it depends, if you buy brand new games then yeah the price the WoW will even out, but if you buy games only through sales such as Steam sales (or various ones online) then you can buy a ton of games for not that much. And all the game can definitely last much longer than 1 year. For example I bought 25 games in a Steam sale for $50 and haven't even played them all yet. And that was last year. I know for a fact I won't get through them all until well into next year. Of course if you are buying brand new (release day) you are actively choosing to spend extra cash considering how quickly games on sale nowadays.

im not hating on wow or anything i have never played it so i cant really say anything.

I thought this was just interesting.

And the reason i did not add the price of the game + expanisons is because that it is normal to pay for those things, I just wanted to know the extra cost of the subscription.

A $1000 over 6 years Is still piddly to anyone with a regular income. Think about someone that buys a $50-$60 for a game, every other month. They're still spending way more than a WoW subscription.

Playing one game (WoW) for five years: $780-900 Buying one new game per month (a lot less than what the average core gamer does): $50 PC (or $60 for console) x 12 months x 5 years = $3000 (PC) or $3600 (console) I'll never understand why people think that $15/month is expensive. Maybe if you're a child and your only income is an allowance your parents give you then you think $15 is a lot of money, but as an adult you should be aware that you easily spend more money eating out or filling up your car every week.

Or you could do the math this way:

£8.99 per month divided by 30 = 30p per day.

Less than the price of a newspaper.

OR, you could look at it this way. Some people pay $60 for games at retail prices and digital downloads right? Most PC games being $50 at launch day. So if you were an all around gamer (PC, Xbox 360, and PS3, or Wii), that costs WAY more than playing World of Warcraft. Because most people who play WOW don't play anything else. $15/month versus the minimum one game $50/60 per month. It's cheaper to play WOW (only). I played WOW for about a year and 3 months during the vanilla days and I'm 100% positive I would have spent more if I was playing other games and not WOW. So in reality, there's two sides to this story or calculation... if you will.

This.. its probably the cheapest way to game imo. If you've been hooked on wow ever since its release you wouldn't of bought any consoles 60 dollar games, peripherals etc. When i play wow i rarely buy any new releases or anything but wow.. then when i get bored i buy a crap ton of games and stuff.. to make this fair lets compare: 2 full retail games would be 50 or 60 bucks.. that equals around 100 - 120.. thats how many months of wow.. around 8ish.. I play wow usually about that much out of the year so all im doing is not buying 2 full retail games a year to play one.. Im totally down for that.

Yeah, it's a shame the game had to progress the way it did with BC. But thats the downside with mmo's. People need more content, but the content that comes usually changes things for worse.

It isn't the money that bothers me as much as the idea that one can play this game casually. Quite honestly it is a time sink no matter how hard they try to make it casual and quite honestly when I played WOW I realized there was something else I would rather be doing lol ....

DeViLzzz
Lots of people play mmos casualy. You know you don't have to be maxed out with all the best stuff to have fun in a mmo. My girlfriend plays Aion casually and has a great time. You can get on 2 or 3 hours a day just talk with your friends, do some BG's or a few instances. Problem is most people get really competitive and want to be the best. I'm guilty, I wanted to be the first rank 14 on my server on WoW and did it back then. Just gotta learn how to play in moderation and still enjoy yourself :P It's possible with any MMO.

YOU GET A LIFE !!!! I'm sick and tired of stupid comments like this and like the poster saying "wow, look how much money you have spent" It's like someone who plays WoW can't have a life. When I used to play, I had a GF, went out with friends, played soccer....all the normal things.....it's just about controlling gametime. As for money, do the same maths for something like a gym membership...or a soccer season.... So please, SHUT THE HELL UP ....

money well spent!

And, if you'd like me to be more objective, my counter argument lol:

prior to WoW (and during my annual three-month breaks), I would generally buy one game per month at full price, and maybe another at discount if Steam had a good deal. So let us assume I spent 60 bucks per month on video games, on average.

Now lets us factor in the average length of games; considering Dragon Age clocked in at around 25+ hours, and Medal of Honor around 5 hours, with everything else falling in between, it comes out to about 15 hours, per game, per month. That is 60 bucks for 5-25 hours of gameplay per month

WoW, on the other hand, costs me 15 dollars a month. I easily get 15 hours per week of thoroughly enjoyable gameplay out of it, per week. It is not constantly fresh content, but the community and random groups of players more than make the experiences enjoyable and fresh.

There is also the added perk that WoW gives: patience. Since I can play WoW basically forever, it has allowed me to bide my time and wait for games I genuinely want and are good. Prior to WoW, I'd finish whatever the flavor of the month was and feel compelled to get a new game, simply because A.) it is my main hobby, and B.) I need more than 20 hours. In short, I actually save money by playing WoW because I dont feel the urge anymore to buy something simply so I have something to do.
--------------------------------------------------------
Ive been playing WoW for about 5+ years, on and off...problably ten months out of every year, so lets do some quick math:

Cost of games and expansions: 50 + 40 + 40 = 130
Cost per year, if playing for 10 out of 12 months: 14.99 x 10 = ~150 dollars, multiply by 5 years = 750 dollars for subscriptions
Total cost, including cost of games and 5 years of playtime: 980 dollars

Now, lets factor in the cost of my traditional gaming habits, of roughly 1.5 games per month, or 18 games per year, at an average cost of 40 dollars

18 x 60 = 1080...that is PER YEAR, for incredibly limited gameplay relative to WoW.
-------------------------------------------------------

Now, for fun facts!
-I would spend more on video games in one year than what I spend on WoW in five years
-Given the average length of a video game, I would need to buy over 185 video games per year to match the gametime WoW provides me

BC changed content for the better. In regards to balance. The term "you can't please everyone" springs to mind, so they settled for a happy medium.

Just cause of this topic I was curious about how much I spent on WoW when I played I played for around 5 years so thats around 900 dollars in sub fees, I also did 1 server transfer, 1 faction transfer, 1 race change, 2 of the 10 dollar pets off of the Blizzard store... also 1 name change as well

In the long run I probably spent 1100-1200 dollars on the game. Though in perspective I get through games very quickly and can play games up to 10 hours a day sometimes. I average at least getting through 1 game per month at least. If I we're to be buying a brand new game every month lets say on average I would have been spending 30 dollars per game (some more some less of course). That would have come out to roughly 1800 dollars for the same time period. Looks like I saved money. Even if you include the expansions I still saved money :)

I no longer play the game and am into another MMO and starting the habit all over again. Bought the expansions and am paying the sub fee but still I am saving money by not having to buy new games every month. This is why I love MMO's

BC was the nail in the coffin. After basicly killing world pvp and giving away epics to every average joe on the block, they gave people flying mounts. Another reason not to bump into eachother and pvp >.>

Arenas just became money making games for us, seeing who could hit the gold cap first. We'd just win win win get a team to 2400. Sell it. Do it all over again.

They cut the raid numbers down but it wasen't that bad. I havent played WOTLK but when I saw the Lich King being 10 manned I kind of threw up in my mouth abit.

The term "can't please everyone" dosent really spring to mind. We had a guild filled with rank 14's dedicated pvp'ers and raided every dungeon every week. We had lots of world firsts and server firsts. BC comes out... 3/4 of those people sell there accounts after we take down Illidan. Coincidence? No. They screwed the game for the real hardcore players like us. There was nothing left to do. No way to distinguish ourselves. There was no more fighting for power in world pvp and world bosses. There was basicly no more world PvP. All we had left was to just dominate the Arena day after day and sell teams to crappy ass players who wanted free epics.

If you mean "balance" by just giving everyone epics you actually had to earn and play for back in Vanilla. Yeah, they balanced it REAL good!

60x15=900 *899.4

Three month plan

60x14=840 *839.4

Six month plan

60x13=780 *779.4

Now i have only done the math form January of 2005 to January of 2010.

So i would estimate that if you were on a monthly plan by now you would have paid over a thousand dollars to play wow. (this does not include the price of the game or any tax)

No wonder they call it wow.

The game came out Nov 24, 2004 and the first month was free so lets say you paid the first monthly payment January of 2005.

Thats 5 years ago or 60 months.

Monthly plan

60x15=900 *899.4

Three month plan

60x14=840 *839.4

Six month plan

60x13=780 *779.4

Now i have only done the math form January of 2005 to January of 2010.

So i would estimate that if you were on a monthly plan by now you would have paid over a thousand dollars to play wow. (this does not include the price of the game or any tax)

No wonder they call it wow.

waste of money - just get Guild Wars GOTY - money wise

In your opinion it is a waste of money. In my opinion Guild Wars was incredibly boring

Hmm yeah well lets not start an GW vs. WoW arrgument here because everytime GW eventually won the battle but anyhow if you found GW to be boring that your opinion, I'm just saying GW would be a much cheaper solution :)

What if you want an MMO. Guild Wars isn't the solution then.

[QUOTE="-Unreal-"][QUOTE="Prexxus"] Yeah, it's a shame the game had to progress the way it did with BC. But thats the downside with mmo's. People need more content, but the content that comes usually changes things for worse.Prexxus

BC changed content for the better. In regards to balance. The term "you can't please everyone" springs to mind, so they settled for a happy medium.

"Nail in the coffin" I think is a poor choice of term here since the game has continued to grow since BC.

World PvP is still there. Players are free to create a world PvP scenario whenever they want. Go get your guild to attack a city, see what happens. Or a town, whatever.

Just because it's epic or purple doesn't make it good. Yes epics became easier to obtain, however good ones didn't. Check the ilvl, not the colour the name of the item is written in.

Flying mounts were a natural decision. You still bump into players in towns, cities, settlements and out in the world. The game is so busy you meet people everywhere. Maybe you're on an empty server. You should reroll maybe.

You mention arena being a gold maker? You could make gold easier by farming mobs. Show me your characters btw, I'd love to see all these that you got to 2400 and sold. Even so, if you really did do what you said, I don't see how that's a bad thing. One thing that I'd like to know is what good a 2400 team would do when they need to fight opponents at that level.

Why is lich king 10 man a bad thing too? I don't see how 10 people killing him is any different from 25 or even 40.

The term "can't please everyone" was in relation to the fact that people will always complain about something. They reduced the 40 man raids to 25 in order to provide guilds the ability to raid without having to find 40 people every time they wanted to do a dungeon. That is just one example, there's plenty more, even simple things like badge loot and things related to PvP gear. They were all done for a reason, mostly to please players and provide a happy medium, and so the term "can't please everyone" related to all of these. You say you had a guild filled with rank 14 players who raided every week as if every guild is like that. You are clearly missing the point, and if you're not missing the point, you're just being selfish in thinking everyone needs to play the game the same way.

As for world PvP and world bosses, you seem to be exaggerating. No one ever really "fought for power" over either. World PvP involved a bunch of people ranging from all levels assaulting a town like Tarren Mill and Southshore with nothing to gain or lose. And the thing is, you're as free as you always have been to get on your character and start something similar.

Keep commenting though on 2400 arena teams and downing Illidan pre-nerf before (of course you sold them!) selling your accounts. It goes in one ear and out the other because I really don't believe a word of it.

Oh right I forgot, watching thousands of people doing stupid things such as emotes and jumping around during your raid/quest/mission called MMO.

You have a very narrow definition of MMO.

Nope, but thats what bothers me when people say GW isn't MMO - so whats your def to MMO? I mean not what WoW have that GW don't; what casual MMO does have that GW doesn't?
