Started playing this the other day. Gameplay and story are great, but, damn, does this game look terrible, or what?

Even at the highest settings, the textures look ugly, blotchy, and blurry. Face animations are virtually non-existent, and every

character has that same vacant stare to them that I remember from Oblivion. In terms of visuals, the game looks like it was released in 2003.

I installed a few mods immediately to improve things.

The other major problem is the extremely cluttered interface. Seriously, didn't anyone at Obsidian sit down and actually look at the butt-ugly PiP?

Overall, though, I'm very much enjoying this game.

It looks fine, you need a reality check if you think it looks from 2003 ;). It's no Crysis but it doesn't look bad either and I saw no washed texture, unlike Fallout 3 and the terrible Oblivion.

There are a few mods that make it look better, at least with the art direction. I dont even have a texture mod and I think it looks great with vibrant lighting, better shaders and a bit of post processing effects. Nothing you could do about facial animations or animations, what the modders have done has already pushed that engine to its limits.

Watch people say it looks fine even though I made a thread a while ago which made it obvious that Dragon Age 2 has it beat in graphics.

I can start up the game anytime and take some pics so don't bother telling me otherwise.

I'm playing it maxed out at 1920x1200 res and it looks great. Sure, there are some ugly textures here and there but you need to remember that this is the Gamebryo engine they've used for quite some time now. As far as animations, we know this engine sucks when it comes to that. For the most part, it looks great though.

Oblivion looks better than New Vegas, except for character models, which are sinfully ugly in Oblivion even compared to games like KotOR.

The game looks fine?

Just look at the silenced pistol. Or, equip a weapon, then right click to aim. Look at your "hand"

I thought it looked alright for a game so wide in scope, sure its no crysis but there is a lot more to see and do plus its a console port.

Quick question however, does modding not disable achievements? I haven't modded NV for that reason yet so if I can add some mods and get achievements I may as well do so.

Eh... some developers just use the "blur" trick when you aim down iron sights. In New Vegas, there is no blur, so it looks rather ugly. Like I said, this engine is old now. I would understand if you're complaining about Skyrim. :P Yeah, you wait.. when Skyrim comes out.. kids are going to scream. Ugly graphics! /sigh :P

Your point? I can pull out random RPGs and say those look worse then Fallout: New Vegas.

Also the game does look fine... People have ridiculous standards, especially for the genre that depends least on graphics and depends more on good writing.

I think Fallout New Vegas is a great game, but the graphics and presentation are ugly. Its really not even an upgrade over Fallout 3, I would call it more of a downgrade.

RPGs have always had good presentation and graphics. Saying that its the weakest part of the genre is just wrong.

Exactly what he said and no presentation isn't important at all, lots of great games with a bad presentation, KotOR for example, Witcher. If the game looks "fine" then it's enough, there are better places to work on, like story which is the most important thing in an RPG, NV also has a good story presentation, better than Fallout 3 which I assume a few people here never even played it, it's a huge downgrade in textures, what they did with NV is amazing considering it's the same engine as Oblivion and Fallout 3.

I don't consider games like Kotor and The Witcher to have "bad" presentation. I consider New Vegas to have bad presentation with its static/undetailed enviroments and terrible animation.

Saying that good presentation can be excused is laughable. The RPG genre still has standards when it comes to graphics and presentation. Look at The Witcher 2, Its likely the best looking game out right now and has a fantastic presentation.

Grab the following mods :

- IMAGINATOR

- Nevada Skies - Darker Nights

- NMC's High Res Texture Pack.

They may not make the graphics top notch but they look much better than vanilla. The main problem about the game's graphics is basically that there's no dynamic shadows, except for characters itself. But since Bethesda is using a totally new engine for Skyrim, we can be hopeful the next Fallout will look better, if there'd be a next Fallout game.

The enhanced shader thingy looks pretty cool.

I downloaded the NMC texture pack ( medium version ) and it actually made the game look worse for me though.

Not really interested in anything else there.

The graphics in New Vegas are fine and the graphics DA2 are fine, too. It's too bad that's where the comparisons and equivalencies end.

RPGs, graphically, were always behind the curve when compared to other genres like FPS. It's really been the push towards some impossibly trite and ridiculous graphics standard that has pushed the genre into mindless action games.

I thought New Vegas looked fine with the scope it had.. The main problem I have is just the animation, namely for melee/unarmed combat.. Its just really lame..

I would have to agree with this.. The only thing graphically is just the animation.. Unarmed and melee combat look REAL lame.. Would have been great if we had the same kind of animation Dragon Age 2 had for New Vegas.

Character models is a part of graphics :?

DA2 might have Vegas beat in graphics department but New Vegas has far better roleplaying, characters, story, dialogue, choices, voice acting and gameplay.

Atleast for me I would rather have better story, characters, roleplaying, dialogue, voice acting and gameplay then graphics :P

Sometimes graphics are overrated, if a game is awesome in every other way and also HUGE in size then I dont mind about graphics that are not mindblowing.

Yes but outside of that? DA2 has generic rehashed cooridors.. New Vegas has larged open spaces.. The only noticably better thing I saw DA2 was what I stated.. Outside of that as a pc gamer there are mods that fix the textures (just like there are for DA2 when people were complaining to high heaven).. In the end why are people even comparing the two games to begin with>?

I also find it to be ugly as sin, cool world to explore and fun gameplay but butt ugly graphics. I also enjoyed Fallout 3 more.

It's not particularly impressive, but it's a multiplat on Gamebryo developed by Obsidian. What were you expecting? And to say it looks like a game from 2003 tells me you clearly were not gaming in 2003.

I can't believe there are people in this thread defending NV's graphics. It's one of the worst looking games this gen. Somehow it even managed to look worse than Fallout 3. It's not just the graphics that are bad either; the whole way the game's art assets were put together and its art direction just makes it a very ugly, hideous game.

Vanilla is ugly as sin, but its infinitely better than Fallout 3.. and almost every other RPG released this generation. We have mods, so i never complained.

Only thing I really disliked about NV was the game's poor ability to make full use of my computer's hardware. Regardless if I was running dual GTX 280s or my GTX 570, the GPU usage never went over 60%. Also, there really wasn't any noticeable difference in running my Phenom II x4 940 @ a low OC of 3.3GHz vs the 3.712GHz I tried running the game on.... The game didn't run as well it probably should have, but it is a great improvement over how Oblivion performed - get 3-4 NPCs on the screen in Oblivion and things went to a crawl. As for the graphics, I wasn't terrribly impressed. It looks better then Oblivion and Fallout 3, but you could tell the game was just rehashed from the same game engine. I didn't mind the game, it had decent enough graphics (without mods) to not be annoying. The story was better then what Fallout 3 offered (joke of a story) and the overall gameplay was a bit more challenging then Fallout 3 offered. It was a decent game. I got enough time out of it to feel like my $20 was well worth it. Graphics are all in the eye of the beholder. Some won't mind, some will...can't please everyone.

It's not a looker, certainly, but it's not so bad it ruins the experience. But I found the weapons to be particularly ugly, plus some of the texturing. Many of the weapons look like they came out of someone's first mod where they were just given a 3D modeling program and came out with some overly simple, slightly misshapen guns.

Only thing I really disliked about NV was the game's poor ability to make full use of my computer's hardware. Regardless if I was running dual GTX 280s or my GTX 570, the GPU usage never went over 60%. neatfeatguy

Something on your end then, when I play New Vegas my GPU runs at 99%. 60% seems very little to me.

Use NMC's texture pack with the Director's Chair mod and Nevada Skies and it looks great.

I can't believe there are people in this thread defending NV's graphics. It's one of the worst looking games this gen. Somehow it even managed to look worse than Fallout 3. It's not just the graphics that are bad either; the whole way the game's art assets were put together and its art direction just makes it a very ugly, hideous game.gameguy6700

I agree, you can tel that there is a major difference in design between Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Lots of textures are constantly copy and pasted and lots of in game objects are just placed onto the ground without any sort of care to making it look presentable.
