I don't understand the bad rap this game gets.

I've had it for a couple of days now, and it's easily the best sandbox game I've ever played. Much, MUCH better than any GTA game, and in my opinion - better than Crysis. I guess I'm really happy with it, because some of the reviews weren't that great, and it's a lot better than I expected.

Anyone else surprised by Far Cry 2?

Good or bad - either way.

Farcry 2 had some very boring pacing with the missions, and on top of that, the weapons felt awful and underpowered. Everytime you go past a checkpoint and kill everyone there, they just respawn the next time around, rinse and repeat for hours on end. This game should never have been called FarCry 2 to begin with. The original on PC was a such a clas$ic.

How far have you got through the game?

I thought the same as you at first. But after getting to 40% complete within a week, it starts to get a bit tedious. It's very typical of Ubisoft's copy & paste method of game design.

I still like the game, perhaps more than most. The action and atmosphere are particularly great. but the repetitive gameplay really lets it down. Oh, and the voice acting is awful.

I found it entirely too repetitive. The gunplay was pretty bad too. First off, there was no effective cover. AI can spot you through buildings, trees, grass, everything. Secondly, the people take TOO MANY BULLETS. You can hit someone, point blank, with 15 shots from a mp5 and they'll only be rolling on the floor and eventually get back to their feet. I'm sorry? Are africans made of kevlar or something?

They could have made the guns much more lethal on both sides. I found myself almost never dying, unless I got hit by a car (which the AI happens to magically drive faster than you). The main character on "Hardcore" can take almost 8 shots before having to pull a bullet out of his skin... this leads me to another point. Why would a bullet go only 2cm into human flesh? Maybe the main character is made of kevlar too. Everyone on the map hates you. It's like there's a giant beacon over your head that says "I'm an enemy!"

Everything else in the game is pretty good. I like buying guns (not doing the repetitive missions for them though). I like that you have an AI buddy to rescue you. The environments look quite good, but they aren't open enough. 90% of the world is impassible, funneling you into enemy checkpoints.

I was surprised how bad it was after how good the first one was. What with the repetitive missions, superfast catch-up AI, enemy npc's spawning out of nowhere, frustrating weapon system and lazy map and gps design, this was my biggest disappointment last year. I've installed in and deleted it again about 4 times trying to give it another chance every time, but I never make it past 3 or 4 missions before I delete it again.

I didn't think it was as bad as everyone else seemed to, but I can't say it was as good as Crysis or GTA. It was fun at but couldn't hold my interest for too long.

Yes i was surprised at how bad it was considering the praise and hype it received from some parties but also not surprised at how bad it was, after all, it is made by ubisoft.

In terms of a sandbox game its just meh, a bunch of large-ish maps but with fairly repetitive and generic terrain and was surprisingly linear at points, in reference to the incredibly bad cliff walls that marked the boundry's, they could have been a little more subtle.

Say what?

Rockstar make great games, have great attention to detail and humour, i think that sentence is entirely the wrong way around. It's true that alot of people got over gta4 but it was never a bad game or poorly made game.

Yes, it's an amazing game.

I'm still playing it, and loving it.

My favorite area is in the North Western part of the map in Leboa Sako, just north of the Cattle Xing ranch. There's a big pool, like a huge swimming pool, and the way that the shadows are cast from the trees onto the water is incredibly complex and beautiful. I've spent fifteen minutes at a time just wandering around that area, doing nothing. I love this game for its beauty (many reviewers stated point blank that this game is better looking than Crysis - and I completely agree), and I love it for the sheer amount of fun that's to be had in just exploring the world (that's what the game is all about, really - exploration).

I say to people that this is an 'atmosphere' game - you either love the atmosphere, or you don't.

The other notable feature of this game is that time doesn't scale in an unrealistic fashion, as it does in most games. In this game you're not going to go through a 12 hour day cycle in five minutes. I really enjoyed that aspect of the game.

The mission areas themselves are also beautiful, and incredibly diverse. Really, I've loved every minute of this game.

I can't wait to play this game on the hottest day of the summer - that'll be great!

The malaria disease is one the if not THE worst game idea ever. Recurring enemies in the checkpoints is just lame, and every mission is the same. So I would really have to disagree. Far Cry 2 was one of the biggest let downs for me in 2008.

Far Cry 2 has nothing on Crysis and GTA IV.

Ubisoft Montreal needs to play some good games and look at what makes them so good, after the borefests that were Far Cry 2 and Assassin's Creed.

The first one was made by Crytek, second one was made by Ubisoft. That's why. :P And yes, Far Cry 2 was pretty bad. Considering Crysis is like the pinnacle of first person shooter gameplay in my book, Far Cry 2 doesn't even come half way to what it achieved.

leonjuretic
This is the strangest thing - sometimes I'll love a game to death, but then a week later (sometimes it's not even a week, but just a few days) I'll be done with it. Not that I'll have finished the game, mind you - just that I'll have lost my mojo. It's not even that I disliked the game... just that the initial passion I had for the game will have somehow vanished. So why then do I like games like Far Cry 2, or Fallout 3, or GTA 4 long after I've bought them - who knows? I can't even answer that question myself, really. I mean, if I love Far Cry 2, and Fallout 3, and GTA 4, then you'd think I probably would have loved Bioshock as well - and I did love it, the first week. The first week I was just floored by Bioshock, and said that it was easily one of the greatest games I had ever played. And here's the thing. I STILL haven't finished it. Playing it is almost a chore. I feel like I kind of have to finish this game in order to play Bioshock 2 - but I really have no desire to do so.

Bioshock looses steam near the end, and the replay value isnt that great.

No, I don't just do that.

So am I the only person who pauses during gameplay to admire scenery? Okay, well maybe I am. What a fool I am. Sorry.

Have you ever visited a forum, and participated in a thread for a game that you LOVED to death. But then some person came into the thread and posted a single sentence saying how much he hated the game. Yes, the guy is entitled to his opinion - but what's the point? He bought the game and didn't like it, and now he's posting his hatred - didn't that turn you off?

So really, you just go around and stare at the pretty graphics? lmao That doesn't make a good game. :( And what reviewers said it had better graphics than Crysis? Please link.

No, I don't just do that.

So am I the only person who pauses during gameplay to admire scenery? Okay, well maybe I am. What a fool I am. Sorry.

I do it in Crysis all the time... But Crysis actually has fun gameplay. And what reviewers said it has better graphics?

I enjoyed it for some time, the presentation, music and graphics had me really immeresed in the african setting. yinno i felt like a bit of a predator getting into the gameplay, but the missions where crap and repetitive and the maleria was stupid. I just stopped caring after a while

I was surprised how bad it was after how good the first one was. What with the repetitive missions, superfast catch-up AI, enemy npc's spawning out of nowhere, frustrating weapon system and lazy map and gps design, this was my biggest disappointment last year. I've installed in and deleted it again about 4 times trying to give it another chance every time, but I never make it past 3 or 4 missions before I delete it again.guynamedbilly

I would say I enjoyed it more then others, I didn't mind repetitive missions, because your the one who has CONTROL over how you do those missions. If some of you guys would replay this game , and try crazy methods of doing things, I think you'll be surprised.

I don't really like griding in single player games. Ridiculous.

yep expected it to be a lot better, thought it was awful in just about every respect, one of the worst games ive played in a long long time

Have you ever visited a forum, and participated in a thread for a game that you LOVED to death. But then some person came into the thread and posted a single sentence saying how much he hated the game. Yes, the guy is entitled to his opinion - but what's the point? He bought the game and didn't like it, and now he's posting his hatred - didn't that turn you off?

yeah of course, many times, you tend to get people disagreeing on forums. happens all the time, why would it turn me off? its not as though its going to stop me from liking the game. just so happens i cant stand far cry2 and it was a massive disappointment, but its just my opinion
