I could go on an on...i've replayed all the games on emulators in the past 5 year.Â
I think I saw it once in there TIE Fighter, but no one mentioned X-Wing.
Then there was the grand daddy of all RTS Dune 2. Not too forget Civ, Civ 2, Pirates, Police Quest (all of them), Strike Commander, Wing Commander (all of them), 688 Attack Sub, Battletech (both 1&2), Privateer, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Sam & Max, Blade Runner, MOO, MOM
So many memories ..... great thread.
Here goes: Broken Sword 1&2, Thief, Half Life, Starcraft, Warcraft 1&2, Worms, Duke 3d, Commander Keen, Death Rally, Battlezone, Heavy Gear 1&2, Monkey Island 1,2&3, Wing Commander, Descent, One Must Fall, Myst, Riven, Baldur's Gate 1&2, Diablo, Abe's Oddyssey, Unreal Tournament, MDK1&2, Quake 1&2, Rogue Spear, SWAT, Jedi Knight, The Neverhood.
Aah, the 90's, where 3d was made, adventure games were aplenty, and the games were focused on gamplay, not graphics. We didn't have to upgrade too much, and consoles didn't ruin good PC Games.
Then there was the grand daddy of all RTS Dune 2.Kemmster
Have you ever heard of Dune 1? Although Dune 2 made the RTS formula, Dune 1 is a much better game, and I've never seen another game like it. It's also aged far better than Dune 2.

what about Dune 2000? in my opinion the most underappreciated game of all time. sure the FMV values weren't as spiffy as C&C and the gameplay was lightning-fast, but it's Dune and it's Westwood. Come on.

I still think Dune 1's better, but I agree, Dune 2000 is an excellent game. I'm flumexed at how much FMV there is. There's like four cinematics before level 1, hehe. I love how they recreated the whole of Dune 2, especially the cinematics. Like the first cinematic is like a recreation of the original one in Dune 2.Â
I just cannot believe that no one has mention Railroad Tycoon! That game took so many hours of my life - in a good way! It sold by the absolute bucket load at the time too i seem to remember - so back in the day we all had brains obviously! :)
I agree with practically all the titles mentioned, but I have to mention 2 fantastic games that for some reason didn't sell that well at the time, and seem to have been forgotten...
Game one was by Look Glass Technologies, that famous publisher that was hard done by. It was a tactical powered body suit FPS with FMV movie mission breaks like, but better than, C&C (that was to come out later). Like with most Looking Glass games, it was ahead of it's time, with day/night cycles, weather, views to the horizon with no fog (unless the weather was foggy!)! It had reflections on water and moved at a cracking speed if you had a decent machine (at the time!). It had a fantastic story, and was one of the first, if not first PC games to have a skirmish option! It was the forerunner to so many great games that totally copied it, from Rogue Spear to Rainbow 6 and even games like SWAT 3, etc! It was also the first extended WASD keyboard control built on the earlier title Looking Glass was involved in: System Shock (which again, no one has mentioned!). The game? Terra Nova: Task Force Centauri!
Game Two was Darklands, released in the mid 90's by Microprose. It was an out an out RPG, but to this day, toally a one-off in that it dealt with a real world, Germany in the 15th century, but then just made real in game all the superstitions and beliefs the people of the time had, from Robber barons and Witches to Saints and the power of alchemy. This was no AD&D game, like we almost exclusively get now! This was historically based with tons and tons of research that Microprose were famed for! (F-19 Stealth Fighter, Railroad Tycoon, Pirates, etc were excellent because of how historically accurate they were, in a fun way!) Even today most people have never heard of it, even RPG fans!
To me RPG's have been given a bad deal in PC gaming. They are, by far, the hardest game to bring to fruition and despite all RPG's having bugs on release (nature of the beast), open world non linear RPG's are the greatest games of all genres. There is nothing to compare with an RPG with it's 100's to 1,000's of NPC's, huge gameworlds with huge content of quests; adventure locations like caves, and haunted castles, etc. Each of them can give 100's of hours of entertainment, and yet despite all this and being sold at the same price as 20 hour linear shooters, they are treated as the same as all other games, are given grief for having the smallest of bugs despite the size and complxitity of them and generally are not treated as special in any way. This is a crime against gaming, and has meant fewer and fewer RPG's being released. RPG's are in a clas of their own and should be given much more respect!
Even though we have such amazing technology now I always think of the 90's as the golden age of pc gaming. demoneyes4
I've actually found 1993 and 2003 to be the golden times for me, so I'm holding out for 2013 :D
From the Nineties:
Simcity 2000/3000, Doom I/II/Final Doom, Privateer, Age of Empires II, Homeworld, Heroes of Might and Magic II/III, Master of Orion I/II, Unreal Tournament, I'm sure I'm forgetting some...
iback in the 90s i was more of a hardcore pc gamer than i am now. back then games somehow felt more magical then today.
my list is almost endless but i am gonna try to sum up my absolute favorites.

lowcally
Um there is a BIG difference between Wing Commander and Privateer.
All the games listed here prove that the 90's was the golden gaming era. Purely based on how many different genres and types of games listed. Can you imagine talking about space simulators and graphic adventures and puzzle games and RTS's that involved thinking and resource collection as wlll as the battles that had come out in the last 5 years - because they haven't!?
Instead all we get is variations on FPS's or TPS's. From RTS's to RPG's all we get are more and more of the 'action' elements and less and less of the 'thinking' parts. We end up calling Bioshock and STALKER RPG's and Company of Heroes and World in Conflict RTS's, when there is little strategy and mostly fast paced 'FPS style' gameplay, allbeit with an RTS look! RPG's are getting more and more 'shooting elements' and fewer RPG elements (Mass Effect Fallout 3, etc) and all in all we seem to berushing headlong into every game being a shallow action game!
You just HAVE to go back to the 90's if you want to use your brain at all and truly have wideranging experiences you can talk to friends about!
haven't been mentioned yet:
SWIV 3D - mission based 3D vehicle combat circa '96. real time, but still quite tactical
