the real question is, will anyone even upgrade to Windows 8?blangenakker
Day 1, first hour if I can get it that fast, especially since they have extremely interesting prices for Win 7 ultimate upgrade. If you want to ask something while being ignorant, thinking that you're cool, smart and a troll at the same time, you need "the real question is, will most people even upgrade to Windows 8?".

[QUOTE="blangenakker"]the real question is, will anyone even upgrade to Windows 8?FelipeInside

- Some will upgrade just cause they love having the latest thing.

- Some will get Win8 cause they are doing a new build.

- Others will upgrade just cause it costs so little to upgrade ($30)

- Most will get Win8 on Tablet and Touch PCs.

I'm fine with my Win7 Gaming Box and plan on staying there, but I can't wait to get a Win8 Tablet.

I'm in the same boat. I'll most likely stick with Win7 on my PC. Might get a Win 8 Tablet depending on how much they are, and I might upgrade the family PC to Win8.

Is it true that Windows 8 makes it illegal to purchase & download software trough any other store front than Marketplace? I mean, i have countless pieces of software installed, both free and purchased, since i play around with web design, and movie making from time to time; Let's say i switch to Win8. If MS doesn't approve of a particular one, i can't use it? What about modding, and special software design for certain games that makes modding easier.

Yes, it's true, if you believe Gabe. He's being vague on purpose, if you know about portables, you don't even need to ask this question (since that's what he currently was referring to) and even then, it's not illegal or hard to install from other places (on those mobile devices).

As for PC, I don't get how you'd even begin to think it might be possible.

You don't need PC experience to realize that what Gabe fears hasn't actually been announced, and probably never will be. Microsoft would be stupid to lock down their OS.

 yes, because blizzard hasn't showed its stupidity and greed as for late AMIRITE? Valve... the only people that can intelligently milk stupid consumors by charing £10 more for each new game, and selling old games nobody would buy at anywhere near full price for 75% off... oh they are so heroic, forcing DRM on us and forcing us to use their service to play their and now a growing number of thrid party games. Gabe Fears Windows "Store dominance" yet this "amazing hero" is trying to monopolize PC game dsitribution himself, ofcourse just like apple-level fanboy idiots, steam fanboys just tout it as innovating

Steam is successful on its own merits. It doesn't block other digital stores from existing on any platform. Microsoft only wants their store to exist on some editions of Windows 8.

Only on the tablet/mobile editions, which MS is hardly the only one doing. The desktop windows 8, will still run any app you choose. Not even MS would be stupid enough to turn windows into a walled garden...

I did not like Windows 8 at all. It would make more sense on a tablet but on the desktop it sucks to me. Tasks that were once simple now require more steps or were completely removed in Windows 8. It makes no sense.

on ONE edition of Windows 8 ... RT, the equivilant to iOS and android, which funnily enough DO THE EXACT SAME THING. Only, Microsoft havn't claimed to prevent access to app likes STEAM being made.... nothing has been said, its mindless paranoa.

Yes, because he is a game dev. whats your point, oh right, it is irrelevant to the topic at hand, well done. I like Valve, but I won't take Gabe as gospel on something he has no proof and only speculation and slandering words to what he knows can be serious competition. If you have Windows 7 you have no reason to get Windows 8.. The end.. Just like Windows XP, you will not have to upgrade for a very long time.. Skip Windows 8 entirely is what I say..

Like I said, Steam is a great product, I use it for some of my games. But I'm not bias or anything. I remember Gabe a few months ago talking bad about another company and their DRM, when his company is the one who had the first big always online DRM to start with. Now he talks about Win8 without even knowing what it's gonna be like just because he is hurt there is another competitor on the market. He's a hypocrite. Maybe you like him cause he created Valve and that's fine, but we aren't all like that.

Maybe you aren't used to the owner of a privately held company being able to speak his mind whenever he wants. It's not like he is answerable to stock holders or a board of directors.

Windows 8 will be a catastrophe, I really really wanted to like it. Windows 7 is going to be my last MS OS. Steve Ballmer is probably the worst CEO for a large company there is. (and he says way more ridiculous things than gabe)

And actually, this may have to do with where you are from. For instance, I live in silicon valley and there is always quotes from CEOs on the local news and in the local paper.

You should look up quotes from:

Eric Schmidt

Larry Ellison (this guy especially)

Steve Jobs

Gordon Moore

Paul Otellini

Jerry Sanders

Rory Reed

Mark Zuckerberg

Jen-Hsun Huang

Bobby Kotick

John Riccitiello

Steve Ballmer

Some of the most ridiculous things you have ever read in your life.

Yeah maybe it's where I live and we don't get as many quotes as you. Still, Gabe is a hypocrite. If you say there are more CEOs like that I believe you. As for Win8, it won't be a catastrophe. I bet 2 years from now everyone will look back and say "how the hell did I ever use that old clunky start menu". Saying that, if ur a gamer, like I said before, no need to upgrade to Win8 unless it's a brand new build.

[QUOTE="Toxic-Seahorse"]You don't need PC experience to realize that what Gabe fears hasn't actually been announced, and probably never will be. Microsoft would be stupid to lock down their OS.MBirdy88

My counter to that argument is to say, Microsoft is stupid... and greedy.

 yes, because blizzard hasn't showed its stupidity and greed as for late AMIRITE? Valve... the only people that can intelligently milk stupid consumors by charing £10 more for each new game, and selling old games nobody would buy at anywhere near full price for 75% off... oh they are so heroic, forcing DRM on us and forcing us to use their service to play their and now a growing number of thrid party games. Gabe Fears Windows "Store dominance" yet this "amazing hero" is trying to monopolize PC game dsitribution himself, ofcourse just like apple-level fanboy idiots, steam fanboys just tout it as innovating

1. Here in the U.S. they don't charge any more than retail.

2. How is he trying to monopolize anything? What has he done to stop other online stores? I'd love to hear your reasoning for this.

No desire to get windows 8.

I think if it did a Vista / Me it would be good for the industry.

[QUOTE="FelipeInside"] Like I said, Steam is a great product, I use it for some of my games. Maybe you like him cause he created Valve and that's fine, but we aren't all like that.FelipeInside

It's not the lack of a start menu that is bad. It's the fact that metro is getting forced into the equation and metro is an awful UI for a desktop environment.

I have a win8 VM at work and home, and use them both quite extensively. Things that took 1-3 steps before now take 5-6 steps and things that took 2-3 steps before take 1 now.

It's not better, it is just a different way of doing it wrong.

So some steps take longer and others take shorter? What steps take longer? Also, the new Start Menu has Live Tiles = instant information in front of you instead of opening the app or webpage. I love this on my Windows Phone.

I agree its like MS is trying to turn the PC gaming market into another crappy Xbox 360 exclusive only thing which pisses me off! MS should just scrap Windows 8 and improve Win7.

Why do people think this? Cause they are putting an App Store? You can still install any program or game anyway.

Windows 8 beta looks like windows 7 with a poorly overlaid ipad looking shell. if Gabe thinks this will change computer gaming he's an idiot.

The Windows Store could dent the success of Valve's own online market, Steam, through which players buy games.

Ah, now i see his problem is he's worried it'll affect his bottom line, nothing affecting game makers, only game distributors. GN, you just lost my respect.

That's what I've been saying since Page 1. He is worried about another competitor with an online Store, not Windows itself.

I don't think it's just the store that he's talking about. There's also the limited number of partners that are allowed to make Win 8 tablets and the closed system about all of the RT tablets. With MS tying tablets, phones, and PCs together so much that they look so similar at the detriment of PC users, I don't know how anyone can consider this a good thing for PCs. Regardless of if you don't think it's that bad, I haven't seen any legitimate points for how the interface will be better for PC users than Win 7s. So anyways, my point is that with MS so obviously putting the idea of their unified platform forward to the detriment of PC users, it's not so hard to imagine Win 9 requiring software to be licensed like it is on the Xbox. Clearly, they've had related ideas in the past with GFWL and the Windows Experience Index. It's not something so outrageous that the people whose livelihood depend on it shouldn't think about that possibility.
