[QUOTE="Deihmos"]So I take it you prefer standard servers over deidicated? CoolDeihmos

No, but I do use them when I want to play with a small group of friends. The fact is, MS shouldn't take out features that are pretty much standard within PC gaming and make people pay a premium for it. It just isn't right. Why do you think not only PC gamers, but also major game developers are also hating on windows live? When something like that happens, then you know that there's something wrong....

If you only knew how easy it is to play with friends you wouldn't say that. I suggest you try it before you say anything else. I was able to play while chatting with some friends on the 360.

It's called Xfire and I use it religously and have been for years and it's free!! You're either spreading lies or you are a viral marketer exposed to the world!!

......So can I and most other PC gamers. It's a little program called Xfire that, unlike windows live, is absolutly free.

Xfire is nothing compared to Live and basically everything that you were able to use before besides hosting a game is there plus so much more. Like i said try it before you knock it because it would be so good if all games actually used the service.

I have a 360, and while it's a great service that should be free (Are you going to defend paying for P2P now??) Xfire is a perfect application for the PC. Not to mention, we don't need that service with in-game browsers like battle net or even the BF franchise. MS is trying to create a situation that the PC is in dire need, but it's not! You create a solution when there is already a problem, Live is great for consoles, but not worth a penny on PC.

Please explain to all of us exactly how live is somehow better than xfire, and is worth the premium? I bet you can't. The fact is, everything that live does xfire can do and it's free. Not only that but xfire has a MUCH better community, in that debate sessions, tournaments, and the like are constantly being set up by the staff, something that live hasn't even been able to do. The only thing live has over xfire is the cross platform online and a slicker design.Other than that xfire is better than it in every way possible.

Also can you please explain why not only PC gamers, but PC devs are also going against windows live? Are you going to say that they're wrong too? When epic of all devs(A team that has helped create a massive game for the 360 and has worked closely with MS regarding live) says that live for windows isn't a good service, you know somethings up.

Great post, and my thoughts exactly. MS's viral marketers, which we seem to have here on GS no doubt, have an entire team of eggheads working on a response right now.

The VOIP option in Live has a few options you never had like having voice come through a headset only. So the game effects are on the speakers and voice come through your headset.

What live does basically is simplify things for those that aren't as advanced on the computer. I'll give it that much. For the others though there's something called ventrilo. A free program which you can use to chat with your friends while playing online. As for game effects on speakers while voice through headset thing, it's probable to being able to do it on the PC.

Remember something, everything that is being done on Live was born because of a computer. The console in itself is just that a computer. Everything a console can do can be done by a computer because it took a computer to make the console. :D

WTF?!?!!? Are you on the MS payroll or something? That can easily be done through the damn control panel. Just set your recording device and recording playback to your headset, and other sound options to your speakers. It takes less than 30 secs.

Peter wouldn't answer the question, and my point was that they dance around the issue all the time. Shawn has brought up that same question about the BF scenario many times on the podcast and in interviews even previous to this issue. Why couldn't Peter answer it? Huh? That "engineer" wouldn't give Shawn Elliot a straight answer, you would realize this by reading the article. MS will restrict VOIP and  Extra Content if a developer chooses to use the Live Service. That's the answer, plain and simple. And that my friend is bogus.

Please explain to me why Epic and Valve share the same concerns that I do and just about everyone here at GS, or that even Shawn Elliot does of GFW magazine????????? Is everyone but MS and their cohorts insane? lol

Unstoppable_1
And the 'see what i mean' was in reference to the FUD i mentioned flying around in the other thread. people yelling and screaming about how so and so is bad because of this or that, and the this or that is not even true half the time. i don't work for MS, no. i just get incredibly annoyed at blatant misinformation and how many people take it and spout it like it's fact, and there's a lot of that on this forum from a lot of people that should (and sometimes do) know better. i didn't upgrade to vista, and have no plans to for at least the rest of this year (if ever) - even for Crysis or other DX10 games, i'll just play them in DX9 or give them a pass. I do believe that dx10 as implemented is vista exclusive for some real reason, i don't believe (yet) that dx10 is really anything special when everything is taken into account (including how early it is in its lifetime). i don't believe there is any technical reason halo 2 or shadowrun should be vista exclusives, but i do believe there's a decent business reason - they want to sell more vista, since they're not selling that much of it right now, and many game developers don't even care about Vista and DX10 anyway. it's the job of the first party to lead the way and try to get other people to follow when nobody wants to, and that's what they're trying to do. if it sacrifices a game that we wish would be on XP, it sucks, but it's their prerogative to do so. hell, why did microsoft wait so long on letting Halo go to the PC from the xbox?

Makari I am a consumer and if Microsoft would bundle game software with Vista it'd give me more reason to buy it then forcing me to get it just to play that cool game Shadowrun. That's just a case of preference though. It is their OS and their games so they do whatever they want.

As for Vista. After seeing this video it does look nice. The guy comes off as either sarcastic or sincere. However Microsoft has been copying. Everyone copies though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDNuq94Zg_8

However now take a look at this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JheuLfWYSsc

Also these three.

My fovorite though is the one with the bunch of Vista "versions." That's just even more bull from MS. Give me one version with everything in it at a fair price. I don't plan on getting a mac, and I love Windows XP. Microsoft just need to be more consumer friendly.

Peter Moore didn't answer the question, but the head engineer on XBL did on the very next page. You did actually read the interview, right? FUD. Again. See what I'm talking about, Unstoppable_1?

NO He didn't answer the question. He danced around it. I have the article right in front of me. Companies either sign up for their service, which will splinter the userbase by offering Silver and Gold. No thanks.

If you had the article right in front of you all along, why bother leaving out relevant information (i.e. that Peter said something like 'I'll let someone else handle that question') or just mentioning the full answer? When the answer points in your favor, but you STILL try to omit things to make it sound even worse, it just makes it sound like you have an agenda and makes you entire platform sound suspect to anybody that actually read the articles.

The VOIP option in Live has a few options you never had like having voice come through a headset only. So the game effects are on the speakers and voice come through your headset.

WTF?!?!!? Are you on the MS payroll or something? That can easily be done through the damn control panel. Just set your recording device and recording playback to your headset, and other sound options to your speakers. It takes less than 30 secs.

wow i didnt know that! im goigng to try that out.

Just go into the sound audio option and go to the audio subsection. In there choose your headset as the recording device and leave everything else at your speakers. Go into the next sub section and there should be an option for recording playback. This controls where voices are sent. Switch that from your speakers to your headset and you'll be able to hear voice through your headset and hear other stuff through your speakers.

You know this thread has come a long way. So I think everyone opinions is going to differ. Some people like Vista, some don't. This thread is about Halo 2. If it was 20-30 bucks and available for 2000/XP/VISTA I think it would of been idle. Otherwise it just set itself up for failure. I'm pretty surprised that more people agree with me though. In the sense of restricting it to vista and it being outdated etc. I'm glad.

However Microsoft has been copying. Everyone copies though.Unstoppable_1
I believe that Microsoft copies the way they do because they can afford to. :) They can sit back and watch what Apple and Linux do, see what works, see what doesn't, then take what works and use it 2 years later. Just like Intel and AMD. The big guy can afford to just watch how the small one innovates, and incorporate that later. I also think that's largely the fault of uninformed consumers that don't have the time/inclination to learn about things like OS' and what else is out there, though.
Give me one version with everything in it at a fair price. I don't plan on getting a mac, and I love Windows XP. Microsoft just need to be more consumer friendly.Unstoppable_1
And that's what MS' main problem with Vista is, IMO. Windows XP is actually a good OS right now. It's pretty much the first time in awhile that we've really had a good stable OS with HUGE support for everything under the sun. What more do we really want from our OS, besides little UI tweaks and widgets (that I don't care about, I use the grey Windows Classic theme anyway :D)? Maybe security, and MS tried to add that in Vista. So honestly, many of us just don't care about Vista, and won't bother buying it, especially with the growing pains it's reportedly having. So MS is trying to give us reasons to want it in the form of DX10, exclusive games and services that could have been on XP if they wanted... etc.

Lmao man you really sensitive about this whole thing. LOL

You cannot set it to have voice from a game come though a headset only. We are not talking about recording voice but voice in games. It's not possible.

Everyone should have it, it's in your sounds/audio properties within the control panel. Maybe it's because I don't use audigy? Who knows.

@ Deihmos, I do apologize about the whole MS payroll thing. It's just that when I saw the reply I was really surprised that you thought that option was only possible through windows live.

No suprise. How halo 1 got a 91 for PC is beyond me. Its networking is crap and unplayable. Its story-line is ok, but by no means 90+ worthy.

When did you play this? The online is quite fun. Download the demo and try it for yourself. I didn't find the lag a problem at all neither the networking. It's only 20 bucks not sure how much it was at release. I give it at least a 9/10 it's Halo and when I played it on Xbox it was incredible. Beat it on legendary with the big Xbox control. It was crazy.

what sound card do you have, onemic? i just realized.. the audigy doesn't have a dedicated headset output, so it has no way of knowing when a headset is plugged into there. my speakers have a headset out jack that i use. and it has a mic input that i'm using, but again.. it was no way of knowing that i have a headset mic plugged into there specifically. edit: just tried my girlfriend's computer with realtek ac'97 onboard and it does the same thing.. just has the onboard sound itself as the recording device/output/etc, not a specific type of port.. edit 2: so the audigy 2 doesn't have a dedicated headset output.. yay for line sharing. neither does the k8n-neo2 platinum onboard. checking my an8 32x's, but i really doubt it :(

I actually use my ASUS motherboard onboard sound card lol. Doesn't your headphone support plug and play, or isn't there a specific output within your mobo that is for headphones? Almost all PC's have something similar to that.

I do have the demo. Unless the retail is x100 better than the demo, the networking is crap. You have to shoot about 1 to 2 feet in front of the person. I also have to nail its realism. Since when is a pistol more accurate than a rifle? Isnt that against most designs? Length+Spin=Accuracy. Also wtf? More damage? and where did they put the scope on that tiny thing?

This game on Xbox is decent because PC has higher FPS standards. I do admit the xbox version is alot of fun online, but the PC one is a much, much worse.

You are giving false hope. Even if you plug a headphone and microphone to your sound card there is no way to specify what sounds come through the headset and what doesn't especially in a game. If you plug a headset in all sound will go to the headset ...cannot seperate anything.

I have tried this before using my 360 headset which is recognised as a playback and recording device. In BF 2142 my only option was to have all sounds go to the headset or the speakers.

What you described right there is Halo in it's essence. Throw in great A.I. and a storyline, as well as great single player maps and you have a hit. You're not used to Halo because it's different from every other FPS out there. It takes time to get used to the weapons. The aliens aren't going to stand there as you shoot them.

The sons of **** love to hide behind stuff and laugh at you when they kill you. Legendary is perhaps one of the hardest things I ever accomplished. When you get through that hurdle, of so many restarts, you'll understand why the Master Chief is an Icon. It's like one man vs the entire world type of thing.

They did, but the developers decided to cut that part out of the ending and pretend it didn't happen, because fanboys were starting to perform ritualistic suicide and sacrificing virgins and mass cult  high school attacks. Why didn't we hear about it? The fanboys subconsciously blocked it out of their minds when the developers fixed it!

It is easy to kill a man, but much harder to kill his spirit. Master Chief will never die now. He is a legend. That is what you must understand. Kill him and you have no story obviously. But speaking realistically if there were many followers of Master Chief killing him will just make antoher one take his place. The marines would be so angry that they'd just obliterate the Covenant. Do not awake the sleeping giant. :D

Why don't they just nuke him? Hit him with artillery? Head shot?

You can't kill a legend. His spirit will live on as long as the people and things that know about him continue to share it.

I also enjoy that you're tossing around accusations of people working for MS, then quote someone at GFW magazine. Remember who writes their paychecks now?

Microsoft doesn't write their paychecks. Ziff Davis does, and they are still CGW in many people's eyes. MS simply paid them for the name change and advertising in exchange for better circulation. Having concerns you say? You're damn right I do. I don't trust MS, and why should I? The thought of them capitalizing on PC Multiplayer is frightening to say the least. Most PC Gamers don't care for MS for a reason, but we have to put up with their OS at the very least. MS's intentions are not to help out PC Gaming, and you and I and everyone else knows this. Microsoft is trying their hardest in all the interviews I have seen to paint an ugly picture about the PC, when in fact this just isn't the case. PC Multiplayer is fine, and it's independent between each game. VOIP for instance, is a GOLD "privilege" under MS's train of thought, not a silver one, but we PC Gamers have had this for a very long time. This is a valid concern. Not being able to host your own games is another problem I have, which is FACT.

Developers can do whatever they want, they have choice, but it's still a concern when a game like BF will get totally butchered if say EA signs up for this Live Initiative for their next installment. This isn't a valid concern? Windows Live will splinter gamers into different groups that weren't there before, it's a pretty simple idea to understand. As a silver member, you WILL be restricted from in game VOIP and that's what I would call fact as well.

MS deserves all the criticism in the world, if you want to go ahead and trust their intentions, you go right ahead, no ones stopping you.

I think you need to first get your facts straight. VOIP is not a Gold privelage everyone can use it. You can host dedicated servers and their are so many dedicated servers available that I see no reason why anyone would prefer to play on a standard game server. Didicated servers are always best against lag.

Wrong again.

You cannot host your own games with a silver account. It's written in various Halo 2 reviews.

VOIP is Gold account only. Here are the DIFFERENCES between silver and Gold. I'm done with this thread, as you are having a hard time realizing basic concepts.

Private chat is only with people on your friends list, and not in-game like we have right now. MS is tricky with their wording. And to the common person, they probably wouldn't know the difference.

Silver Membership Features

Single gamertag

Common gamer profile

Common gamerscore

Single player achievements

Go pickup the latest issue of GFW magazine and read the article starting on page 43. By looking at your profile though and how you have rated PC Games vs. others, I'm surprised you even care to begin with.

[QUOTE="MyopicCanadian"]No co-op?! FK... just like the first Halo on PC. I like how devs REMOVE features when porting games to PC. That sure makes a lot of sense.lol_waffles
Internet co-op is complicated. It would only work if two players connected to the same server that is not hosted by one of those two players. The reason for this is because, if one person connected to another person's computer to play, the enemy AI wouldn't sync.

Why would it not sync? there would be a delay for both players... And if one is slower than the other the faster person would be slowed down as well. Alsohow come other pc games have ai in their mp...
