I have been trying to set up a network so i can transfer files between my computer another computer but they do not seem to find each other. Whenever i go to network both computers do not see each other. On one computer i am using Windows 7 RC and on the other i am using XP. So could someone give my a step by step guide in doing this or any help.

Thanks,

Just do ipconfig on either one, then go to my computer and just do \\192.168.1.101 or whatever the other computers ip is. And the reason why you can't see it, is maybe because you are not on the same workgroup?

I believe you have to have a password and login on both pc to tranfer data inbetween them. Then when you double click the user type the username and the password. Or you could do yourself a HUGE favor and buy an external hard drive. Oh, yeah, dont forget to share the file by Right Clicking>Properties>Share Folder

So what i did was i first was i setup a network by going to control panel in windows 7 and click on setup a wireless ad-hoc. I went through that process then went on the XP machine a went to control panel and wnet went through the connecting to a network wizard.

Just read this. It explains how to share files and printers between XP and 7. Most of the people in this thread are way off base and don't know what they're talking about.

Link

You can also put files in the public folder on your 7 machine that you plan to share.

You do realize \\ is the standard form of sharing right? This is the most basic way to share. You don't need to go through any of that gui stuff. (But of course you have to share the folder first obviously, which I assume he did)

Just to make sure gamespot is formatitng my post right, your entering it like this right Cause when you quoted me only one slash is showing. And make sure they are in the same workgroup. However if you use ip addresses, you don't need to be in the same workgroup. But if you want to just see the actual computer in my network computers, then you have to. To make sure your in the same work group, my computer > properties > look at the workgroup, make sure they are same. However if you just use the slashes and the ip address you don't have to worry about that.

Oh and this is correct, for sharing you need a username and password on your account. And if you don't want to be bothered on entering your password eachtime on your computer, go to start > run > and type control userpasswords2 and uncheck the box that users have to enter the password on startup.

Well you don't need to see it, just setup a password on the computer being accessed, and use the slashes with the ip address, works great.

Your router? What ip address did you enter? Can you tell me exactly what your inputting? (Before you think putting out ip addresses or something like that is dangerous, all of these are assigned by dhcp, and have no real meaning)

Yeah that's not the one you want to be putting in, that is your wan ip. That is the ip address computers on the internet see you as. I want to be seeing your lan ips, like 192.168.1.103, or 10.10.10.3, or 192.168.0.103, or something like that.

----------------------------------------------

If you want to a bit more info that is not related your issue, a modem receives the ip address, the router acknowledges it, it creates a clas c network starting at 192.0.0.0 which is typically 192.168.1.0

Then all your pcs are assigned an ip address from the router like 192.168.1.103 or 192.168.1.104

----------------------------------------------

Anyway back to your issue, I just want the lan ip of the computer you are trying to access. Make sure it has a password, and Windows will prompt you for the password and you should be able to access it. This whole setup shouldn't take longer than 2 minutes.

What didn't work?

I'll give an example:

My computer is 192.168.1.225, computer I want to access is 192.168.1.203

I right click the folder on 192.168.1.203 and share it. Then I go to my computer (192.168.1.225) and go to my computer and type in the address bar

\\192.168.1.203\sharedfolder

EDIT: it says the same thing before, either there is a spelling mistake or your netwqork is not working properly. I checked the spelling so i know it is not that

The files are on Windows. You need a password on Windows to access it. Because if there is no password, anyone could access it on the network. You're not having the files on Linux, so you don't have to deal with Samba.

Put a password on both computers.

Go to windows 7 machine: Start>Computer>In the left hand panel click Network.

Do you see the XP machine?

If yes: Double click it>Enter username and password

If no: Go to windows 7 machine. Start>right click Computer>Properties>Look at the screen until you see the word "Workgroup" What does it say next to it?

Then: Go to XP machine. Start>right click Computer>Properties>Click Computer Name tab. Look at the screen until you see the word "Workgroup" What does it say next to it?

I feel for you, I had nothing but problems when trying to setup my network to share my external HD. I just gave up and got Network Magic Pro. Great little program, not free but worth every penny IMHO.

It allows me to do everything I want and has a lot of other neat features. It can monitor any PC it is installed on and track what all it is doing, like what websites have been visited and what programs have been run and for how long. You can even take a screenshot of the desktop of PC's on the network if Netwok magic pro is installed on them.

They have a free trial version that I got and bought it the next week after I saw how much I liked and used it. Give it a shot and see what you think.

This isn't completely necessary but i haven't seen anyone else say it: make sure your network is set as a private network not a public one. Then all the computers should be visible, makes everything a whole lot easier instead of typing in IPs and such you can just double click on the device. After that it should all be quite straight forward.

printers are at: network > computer connected to printer > Printers

Folders are at: network > computer where folder is located > Public (you can add other folders but for simplicity it's best to get it working with the standard public ones first)

my network is a home network. They are on the same workgroup. I tried the IP thing and it is not working. Whenever i go to my network on the Windows 7 machine i get three choices Computers (I just get the name of the computer i am on, i guessing if my network worked i would see my other computer), Media devices (I click on the option and WMP opens up) and finally Network infrastructure which i am guessing is my router and it says can not disconnect because it is busy. So that is where i am right now.

I really appreciate the help i am getting.
