"Whoa, whoa, whoa! Before you tear down your Gabe Newell poster or throw away your Robin Walker découpaged Trapper Keeper, hear 'em out: Valve's veep of marketing Doug Lombardi simply said, "anything is possible" and that he'd be "happy" to discuss an acquisition of the hugely successful independent developer. He's not talking about "selling out" ... like that band ..."
Well thats sorta good to hear but i would still rather see them get bought out by Blizzvision than EA .... eitherway if it does i will most likely not be buying anymore titles through their steam store, rather just play the games i own and purchase any others outside of steam ... i dont trust EA enough to keep my games in some "network"
wait a minute...are u saying that value may be purchased by EA?!
PC gaming is about to be history!!!!

Valve hasn't made a PC exclusive game in years dude =/
This would make little to know difference.
This has it's plus points...
+ EA's current DLM is god awful, teaming up with valve could hopefully result in a better DLM, or they might just keep steam.
+ ...
- Less support for indie developers on steam?
- Rushed games
- Limited patch support
moshakirby18
not only that but EA has HUGE marketing influence on all of there products..its a no brainer why Valve would want to go EA..

This would be such a smart move by EA to buy VALVe, they'd in a dominant position no doubt. But if they were talking being bought, I'd actually rather have them be bought by MS. They could call Steam the MS store or something.

No differences? What about steam servers, customer support, patches, game updates (look at DOD:S)? Have you ever played an EA game? All valve games will be conslized.

I'd rather have them be bought by nobody, then valve rises up and becomes a software superpower and buys out EA, then Microsoft :)moshakirby18
Don't really see that happening unless PC gaming because a crapload more popular ... or VALVe comes out with a console (..omg)

If they were bought it would most likely be like the Bioware and Pandemic purchases.
Ie, none of that stuff is majorly effected.
And Valve games would NOT be consolised from being purchased by EA. That's just stupid.

Look at the support Valve gives their games. Do you see that from Bioware, Pandemic, or EA? I dont want rushed unsupported Valve games. Do you think we would get an update like DOD:S for free if EA buys out Valve? Do you think we would see the same quality servers?
EA is going to end up buying every good **** developer and we're going to left with nothing but **** rushed games. THANKS EA!DerkaDerkaJihad
Going to end up? Where have you been for the past 10 years?

You are OVERREACTING. Only thing that will change imo is that EA games will be available through Steam.
If EA buys Valve, it buys them, they don't make the patches for Valve, they don't develop Steam, they do almost nothing, maybe ask for some new games from them. But what you said there about consolization, servers, patches, support... is just stupid and exaggerated. If you want to think that, so be it, but try to be open minded. EA is the last company that i would put on my list but if this happens, Steam will only get better and will have a huge amount of new games available through it because EA, publishes most games on the market.
Who cares?!?! this is old news.. Do you not think the Devs at Valve are still not going to strive to make great games because EA will buy them?? Devs still want to be the best..
EA is good for PC gaming if you think about it.. We just had the discussion of how there are little PC games remaining in stores.. So if you get the EA maching to publish the PC games there will be more in ther stores.. EA knows how to publish games there the best out there.. EA has been publishing Valves games anyways.. Id Software recently joined EA because they know it would be better for there up and coming releases..
Want to know a possible effect on Steam? EA's download manager allows you to redownload your game for 6 months or 2 years if you purchase the extended service. Steam allows you to download your game unlimited number of times. If EA buys out ValvE, you think EA won't change Steam and your games to a limited time that you can redownload them?
Alan
Just read Valve not opposed to being bought by Ea! http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/05/got-some-cash-valve-happy-to-talk-acquisition/ This is horrible! I hope this never happens.artiedeadat40
WTF
Valve is the one company i respect for releasing only best and the thought of them joining such a garbage plant as EA is terrible
If EA did buy Valve, they wouldn't have a hand in development anyways. They also wouldn't be touching Steam because it's really profitable and if anything, they will ditch their download program and add EA games to Steam. You guys freakout too much.
I want EA to buy Valve, because I like the new EA. Everything except Mass Effect DRM, that is. Combat the Blizz-Activision menace.

The same EA that only allows you to redownload your games on their digital service for 6 months? Steam allows you to redownload your games unlimited times with no time limit. If EA were to buy ValvE, say goodbye to that...
Alan
Doesn't worry me, but I don't like it, nonetheless. Let's just say it further solidifies my certainty that I'd be applauding and jumping for joy (no, literally, I'd get out of my chair and cheer and jump around like a maniac) if I ever read EA went out of business.
Oh god not this again; why revive an old story?
Ok get this, Valve said "anything is possible"; this site along with every other gamer has been twisting this into "we want to be bought up" ever since it was said.
Every company has their price; Valve is just admitting to that, it doesn't mean they are actively seeking to be bought up.

I don't care if ValvE sells as long as Steam isn't negatively influenced, i.e. the removal of unlimited downloads such as EA's 6 month time limit on their service. If Steam isn't effected, I don't care.
Alan
This could be a good thing, who knows? _LiquidFlame_
A good thing? Have you not seen EA's download manager? Buy a game and have 6 months to download it, then bye bye. ValvE and Steam no such time restraints. Good thing? Ok...

Is that your only argument?
Everyone has ignored the last 3 times you used that argument in this topic just because it was so STUPID.
EA would not be stupid enough to mess with Steam, Steam works, Steam is profitable (as far as we know) so if they did buy Valve (Which they might, but they haven't spoke about ANY intentions on doing so) they would leave Steam as it was.
Hell, I would be willing to bet that if EA bought Valve, they would shut down their download manager and just put their games on Steam.

Yes that is my fear. I also stated that IF Steam wasn't impacted I wouldn't mind. I cannot see why EA wouldn't bring their own policy from their download manager to Steam if they were to buy ValvE. Can you present me any argument or evidence why they would leave Steam alone and not change the unlimited download policy? If so, please do.
