[QUOTE="bogaty"]

Both Wadsie and I have given reasons but it's apparent that you don't want to hear them. Further discourse with you will be a fruitless endeavour.

Wadsie. I agree. I hope that the classic mode works out and brings back some players. If not, hopefully Iron Front will do well. I know you're a fan of ArmA so will probably enjoy it. I'm looking forward to it but some early reviews out of Europe say the AI isn't really up to the task. Guess that means co-op time!

Toxic-Seahorse

Except that you gave a bunch of BS reasons and Wasdie only gave the "chaotic vs refined" reason, which is hardly a reason RO is better "in every other aspect" You have yet to counter ANY of my points.

You're the one who doesn't want to listen to me and would rather defend RO2's gameplay, which obviously wasn't as good as RO1's because RO2 bascially died while RO1 and Darkest Hour still have active communities.

[QUOTE="Toxic-Seahorse"]How was RO a better game in every aspect? The ridiculously unrealistic recoil? The unrealistically slow movement? What about the game is actually better than RO2? You can't just say that without having any reasons.Wasdie

Rediculously unrealistic recoil?

Ever fire a Mosin Nagant? They kick that much. Also, every try to sprint with 50lbs of gear in your hand an a long rifle? You don't move around that fast.

Everything about the gameplay is better in RO2. Guns are more difficult to control and add to the chaotic elements of the battlefield, the battlefields were much more open, the suppression mechanic actually meant something, the weapons were far more historical accurate with their numbers, the tanks were far more fun to control, you didn't have silly spotting mechanics or a magic airplane that could tell you the location of every enemey...

I could go on. RO2 attempted to merge the very unique gameplay found in RO with more mainstream shooters. They failed to deliever on both fronts. They couldn't make the game appealing to casual players and they lost the original feeling that made the original game so fun to play.

Never once did I ever have a deseprate rush through smoke and machine gun fire to jump into a Russian trench and bayonet somebody like I did in RO1. Those moments were just not in RO2. Everything was too clean, to refined.

Thanks for posting actually good points about why you like the first RO better. I disagree with you on most of it, especially how guns being more difficult to control makes it better. It just makes it different. This isn't a case of one game being objectively better. You like the super hardcore aspect of RO while I found it tedious and stupid. It's a matter of differing tastes. But saying the recoil wasn't way overdone is simply you in denial. Yeah, I wouldn't be able to handle guns like those, but then again, I'm not in the military like you're supposed to be in these games. Even the developer said the recoil in RO was way overdone.

Also, lol at using a game's population to determine what game is bettr. If you're going by those standards, CoD is the best game franchise ever created.

Toxic-Seahorse

There comes a point where yes, populations do matter. When an old game like Red Orchestra can maintain numbers even when the much better looking sequel comes out, that says something about that original game. Even more, that sequel's numbers fell to oblivion only a few months after launch. The developer had to revert back to beta several times.

If RO2 had been holding a steady population like RO did, then I wouldn't bother bringing it up. Obviously you can't soley judge on it's population, but RO2's population fell and RO1's population grew slightly and then steadied off once again. That's a good indication that people who bought RO2 didn't like it enough to stick around and other games at the time were more appealing.

Everything isn't black and white. This isn't system wars, don't think in those terms.

It's no lie RO2 has been a major disappointment for everybody. Fans of the series hated the direction they took, the gameplay wasn't good enough to hold new players attention, and everybody was completely outraged at the terrible state the game launched in.

You heard that right. The free weekend should go live soon.

I have almost the exact same experience with BF3, COD and CS as you and I love Red Orchestra 1 & 2.

Give it a try, it might just be your type of game;)

If you like it than you should give it another try this weekend. The free weekend is sure to bring new players that try out the game.

Free weekend? NICE!!! I will definitely download it then, still have yet to buy it but I really want to.

That would be a lie because I wasn't disappointed at all. Then again, I didn't like the first game. Yeah, They released RO2 way too early, if they had actually ironed out all the bugs I think the game would have been more successful than it is. You can't put all the blame on gameplay, you also have to consider the horrid launch it had. I heard a lot of people couldn't even play the game or had awful performance issues, I escaped most of that because I had much older hardware at the time and apparently the game ran smoother on lower settings and older hardware.

Even if the game was released with zero bugs the fact remains that Tripwire had tried to please both the hardcore and casual crowd and failed. I agree with everything Waside has said on the matter..what made Red Orchestra standout in the crowd was that it wasn't easy. When i first picked up the game when it was on sale for $5 on steam years ago i had no idea what i was getting into. brought the game completely blind and got murdered over and over in every round. It took me days to finally get a single kill in Red Orchestra...and i still remember the night it happened.

Red Orchestra 2 was..while still very fun to play...and slap in the face to the RO community. Tripwire sort of made the same mistake bioware made with dragon age 2...you shouldn't develop sequels for the people that didn't like the original.

My experience playing the beta and the game at launch was different. There were way more people that liked the game than disliked it, it's just that it didn't run well for a lot of people and some simply couldn't play the game. Also, why does a sequel have to be the same as the original? That doesn't make sense. RO wasn't a very popular game to begin with and the number 1 priority for a business is to make money. They took a gamble and it obviously didn't pay off, but creating another game like RO wouldn't have been that smart of a financial move either. Yeah, it's not as hardcore, but it's hard for me to grasp how someone can say RO does everything better when that's clearly not the case. Making shooting harder doesn't mean it's better. Running slower doesn't mean it's better. It's all opinion yet you guys act like RO is factually better than RO2. It sounds like you're judging the game by comparing it to the first which isn't how you're supposed to judge a game. It's its own game, it should be judged as is, not based on what came before it.

Just got done playing the new update and its pretty sweet. I encourage all you guys to try it out during the free weekend. Performance is a million times better, finally optimized, and the new map is AWESOME. Didnt really get to try out "Classic" mode since the server I always play on was still using "realism"

The game still doesnt feel like RO. But I dont mind, since I never got to play RO that much anyway. RO2 is a solid game in its own right, finally.

What a lot of the die-hard original fans seem to forget is that RO was never that hardcore to begin with nor was it a super-serious-ultra-tactical-mil-sim they all make it out to be. Unless they're somehow forgetting clown cars doing powerslides into cap points loaded up with sappers who tossed satchels everywhere. Or the awful movement system. Or the fact that your soldier fired every gun like he was a child with noodle arms. Or pixel sniping the enemy in the feet/hat/finger to make a kill. They'll complain that RO2 is too fast paced and that it's only about close quarters combat and forget that Danzig was the most popular RO map and frequently was a spray fest. Perhaps they'll forget the complaints that Ostfront spawned for things like "smoother movement, easier hipshots, and on screen information." Sound familiar? Some of the community called it a typical Hollywood shooter. People were mad that the game had fewer weapons than the mod. Sound familiar? People **** about the graphics and how awful they were. Sound familiar? They **** about performance. The netcode was inconsistent. Scopes made the game crash. Tanks were regarded as a joke. They said no teamwork was required to win. The funny thing is the community then had many of the same complaints but nowhere near the vitriol you see out of the community today.

maybe I will reinstall it this weekend while in case there's a bunch of people playing it.
I played it for a bunch of hours when I got the game, but kind of got my full for that time. I figured it'd be a lot of fun if I had people with microphones to work with or something.

So what are your impressions on the update people ?

Just got done playing the new update and its pretty sweet. I encourage all you guys to try it out during the free weekend. AdamPA1006

Yeah I noticed performance being a lot better too, it even looked sharper (or that could be because I upped the settings a little bit)

Classic mode should be a bit more like the original one, but I'm more of realism player myself.

Having said that I did try out Classic and Action modes:

  • Classic was better than I expected, I didn't thought I would manage to get the amount of kills that I did. The removal of double zoom is something I still need to adjust too. I like the fact that sprinting gives your weapons more sway though. I also like that russians can't spawn with german weapons and vice versa: it was a bit weird seeing every allied machine gunner running around with an MG34

  • Action is something I don't see myself playing a lot. I can live with the inclusion of crosshairs and the removal of weapon sway but having vital parts of your body (head, hart) not being a insta-kill is a deal breaker for me. But than again its not a mod thats aimed at me: it's a great way for people to get into Red Orchestra without too much of a leap from other games. It's a good idea of Tripwire since Red Orchestras tutorial was severly lacking and put people off.

I also like the new font they use. Everything is a lot clearer now.

6DF565415E3B7B2BB3794D4F0A25A7CFB3FB3962

Hit detection seems to be perfect now. And they also fixed the ZF-44 scope (if I remember the name correctly)

Before I didn't want to use the G41 sniper because its scope was awfull and you had to reach level 25 to get a new one. Now it's a rather decent scope:

Did it get an award for being "GOTY" or is this yet another developer slapping that onto their game?

Okay. I downloaded an update and played, but I found a bunch of bot servers with maybe seven actual humans playing earlier today. I'm on the West Coast, Canada, and it sounds like your guys' experiences are completely different from mine. Your screenshots are even completely populated.

It's weird, just trying it now, it seems to be downloading another update (seems like a big one). Did my Steam screw up and let me play an older version of the game?

That is indeed weird. I had absolutely no issue finding a full server. Played on three almost full server to try out the different game modes, and I just clicked the first server that looked somewhat good. (because I didn't have much time and just wanted to try out the gamemodes)

In the GOTY edition server browser you will now see:

# actual players / # total players(# bots).

For example 30/64 (0 bots). Did you see that ?

If not than steam did indeed not download the latest version. The patch is big by the way: 5GB.

Okay, that's bittersweet news. I am indeed downloading a new patch, then. Awesome because I'm excited to finally try out classic mode, but kind of upset now that I told my friend the game was dead. Now I gotta explain to him tomorrow I was an idiot.

But I have to wonder, who were all those human players? What were they doing with an outdated version of the game like me? It was like an RO purgatory where bots fight to the death on an endless loop :P.

Yeah same here, I have some friends to convince now to play the game again. RO2 is a lot higher now on steam stats with 2000 people playing atm. I don't know if that is because of the free weekend, because of the bug fixes or because of the return of classic mode. Probably all of the above.

Sharpie125

I don't know :P

but some people just like farming bots to get XP and upgrade their weapons lol

I live in Vancouver and had no problem finding a game yesterday around 5pm. I think if you wait too late, everyone else in NA is asleep.

I only played the old realism mode on old maps since thats what servers were on, and to be honest I didn't notice much difference. It ran great for me before and still does, I still experienced minor glitches when vaulting over cover, and I still cant spawn on squad leaders. Still great fun though, if this update reinvigorates the community I'll get back into it for sure.

Finished updating this morning and jumped in, it's definitely way more active. I was just in the weird twilight zone-RO for a spell yesterday.

I think I read on top there were 4000 players as of this morning. I jumped into the end of a classic game and immediately racked up 6 kills with my beloved boltie. Man, I've missed how powerful it is. Then of course I was plugged in the back of a head by my own team mate, but that's Red Orchestra for you.

Almost embarassed to admit, since I was reading this thread before I went to bed, I ended up having a dream about RO which included the new server browser changes and so on. Had a good feeling about it when I woke up.

The issue I seem to be having now is that the server client will sometimes not register any games for me, so the list of servers appears totally empty. Doesn't matter how many times I reset the filters or refresh, it just comes up empty.

Client side hit detection essentially fixed the game for me. Classic mode also doesn't have bandages, which is good.

Aw......the game still kicks me for "speed Hacking" even though it's just lag. *sigh* before that anti-speed hack bit was implemented I loved this game.

Well classic mode fixes the game proper. Still not the same feeling as RO1, but it has it's own unique feeling.

At first PunkBuster refused to install. Worked after three attempts.

Then the game refused to save my settings and locked Windows Explorer when I was exiting in order to apply settings. Also this is the first time I had to restart a game only to change the sound settings, and I like how they made tooltips that don't actually explain anything.

I made one last attempt and finally made it work full-screen.

So I joined a game. Thanks for the complete lack of any tutorial. Why couldn't they make at least one SP mission available? But that doesn't matter now because my character keeps moving forward without me pressing any key. Verified twice. I have to kill the game from Task Manager.

Uninstalled. I'm sort of happy it bombed now. I know the drill about PC variety and how not all games work properly and so on, but from what I've heard about RO2, from the idiotic menus and customisation and from the billion problems I had in 10 minutes, I'm convinced this is a POS.

I don't know if it's the lag but the movimentation and cover system in this game is awful, jerky and glitchy. That really turns me down, even if it's so called realism is at times fun.

Lol I got the steam notifications saying you were "now playing RO2" like 5 times, then shortly after "now playing Alan Wake's American Nightmare." I thought something must have gone wrong.

Its certainly a bad move on their part to not let people try even the training mission of the campaign since its a fairly complex game. It took me a while to warm up to the game, so if your rage subsides I'd endorse another attempt while the free weekend is on and the game is cheap.

I'm so paranoid about those Steam notifications:lol: I'm always thinking somebody in my list will be annoyed by them, but on the other hand I like being signed in.

I'll reinstall the game tomorrow.

I'm actually shocked that they're still charging $40 for the game (it's currently on sale) I thought for sure it would be $20 by now.

Did it get an award for being "GOTY" or is this yet another developer slapping that onto their game?

R4gn4r0k

Developers do this a lot nowadays. It's pretty stupid imho.

... except that RO2 did win GOTY.

In what world? I'm a PC gamer, and maybe I was out of the loop at that time... but who gave them the unanimous GOTY award? Don't tell me... One website/reviewer? A link would be nice. I'm not saying you're wrong but I google'ed it and all I got were Game of the Year editions but nothing about awards from multiple websites.

^They might have jumped the gun. PC Gamer gave them multiplayer FPS of 2011, but I don't think PC Gamer has one singular GOTY.

Ah well. Beats "Red Orchestra 2: We're Sorry Edition".

what's so classic about the mode?

It actually brings back a bit of the chaos. No more minimap, no more experimental weapons everywhere, suppression actually suppresses, no more bandgages. Not to mention the game itself is so much smoother.

This game is awesome! a true PC game. I haven't had this much fun in a while, much better than lame popular shooters we have right now.

So wow this game is incredible, it goes away from the more close quarters engagements and huge hitpoints of games like Battlefield 3, and adds this chaos and lethality.

There are so many options, and so many opportunities for epic moments. I snuck behind some enemies today in Countdown mode and took them all out with my scoped Mosin Nagant by switching to iron sights mode, an I rushed into a hole full of enemies before bayonetting the hell out of two of them (and getting shot to pieces after).

Whatever gets people playing, man. I saw a video and it reminds me of old Call of Duty or Medal of Honor Allied Assault, but way more deadly. I even want to try it, but I'm too much of a purist at heart :P.

I do like Action mode, takes me back to original COD (ah COD, you used to be great).
