I was having an argument with my little brother (he's in 6th grade). He thinks that consoles are better than PC games for the sole reason of consoles being more popular in the US. I told him that PC gaming is more popular than consoles in Europe, but he refuses to believe me. Can anyone (especially euro pc gamers) help me prove him wrong?

I think that the ratio of PC to console in Europe is much higher in favor of PC than it is here in the U.S. Especially in Great Britain...

Over here in Britain, PC Gaming is still extremely popular, like Gamen00 rightly said. There is still large sections of game stores dedicated to PC games and gaming, and are displayed so the maximum number of games can be displayed in a single area.

Uhmm you didn't tell him his console sucked compared to your PC did you??? Because if you did then you started a baseless argument. Either way PC gaming seems more popular in Europe than in America (and I mean the continent).

I never thought PC gaming is popular in Europe.

I guess the only place PC gaming will never be popular is Japan.

PC gaming is very popular in america too, with sales figures to prove it. It's just people don't talk much about it (outside of forums), whereas console gaming is more openly discussed and played.

For me (i live in England) i don't know anyone who owns a "next gen" console lol, some people own ps2's they dont play anymore. Everyone owns a PC and plays World of Warcraft and nothing else now lol. However yet Console gaming outsells PC's in every country by miles so someones buying all these games lol.

I think mainly as you get older you stop playing console and move onto PC and thats why i don't know anyone who plays a Console. I reckon Console gamers are mainly under 16's and mainly kids who get games for christmas and birthdays.

Here in Sweden it isn't very popular to play consoles over PC. Everyone basically owns a PC. Xbox360 and the likes comes on second hand. If not even third..I believe the cellphone is even more popular than consoles..much like Japan..only that the cellphone owns the PC too over there.

PC-gaming is only growing..even our chicks have started to get interested. Instead of those boring, blonde hookers that you used to see before.

Consoles belongs to the 80ies and should've stayed there. PCs ftw!

Plus Europe has dozens of top-quality developers making games.  I think the number of studios over in Europe might even exceed the developers in the US (all of whom seem to be owned by EA and Ubisoft).

Yeah I think it might be true. At least from my personal view point, for e.g. in our class PC gamers out number console gamers 7:1. I also made a little study about gaming in one of our courses, it was targeted to college students and got about 70 answers, the study itself wasn't the actual point there, but in any case according to it PC gaming was way more popular than console gaming. And when you look at a game like America's Army, the number of European players is huge considering that it's AMERICA'S army, I think one reason to that could be the generally large number of european pc gamers.

Pc gaming is much more popular than console games in europe. I'm from poland(I wonder if you know where is it:-) , the middle of europe, but on the east of our border piracy is a great problem and a few people buy games.

The most popular console in europe is Playstation 2 and PSP, Xbox360 is barely noticed.

In eastern europe and russia of all the gamers, 85% are PC users, and only 15% are consolers :)

its just becouse with one shot you take two bunnies. With one pc you can play games and do your work, internet and so on.

I'm from Holland and I coulnd't tell you whether PC gaming is more popular than Consoles. If I judge by the shelves in the stores and the way games are priced - I'd still put my money on consoles being the bigger (no not the better)  platform. My latest personal expierence: I bought sniper elite for €14.95 on PC. The Xbox version still goes for €49.99. And that's just one example; I see these differences in pricing quite a lot.

PC gaming is very populair in Europe.

Burning Crusade is the most both game of the year in some game stores here in Holland. Fact is that only the big multiplayer titles are doing amazingly well and the singleplayer games are just being pirated.

That's very true, even tho I know a lot of PC gamers, I am pretty much the only one who plays SP games, the rest play only MMORPGs or occasionally some CS. This will inevitably make it look like consoles are much more popular since they sell more games and game stores mainly consists of console games. PC players download their MMORPGs online and then might stick to the same game for years. So if you measure the popularity of the platform by sold games then I think consoles win even in Europe, but if you measure it with the amount of players and hours of games played then PCs take the 1st place, propably.

pc gaming is popular in, well, can't speak for europe - but it's strong in UK... all game shops still stock pc games (seems like a lot of american shops are stopping that for good)

the next-gen console games are very expensive as well - a typical 360 game can cost as much as £39, while a typical pc game costs £17-25 - even ps2 games are more expensive than pc games - so a lot of people are just turning to pc gaming, since if you're gonna buy 10 to 20 games a year, that's a big enough saving to keep your machine on the technological speartip, pretty much

right now on amazon uk, for example, unreal tournament for pc is £17.99 while the 360 and ps3 versions weigh in at a hefty £39.99 - more than twice as expensive as the pc version

it might be argued that, if price is determined by demand, the console market is much, much larger than the pc market - but sales charts suggest otherwise - the console market as a whole is obviously far larger, but each individual console considered, there isn't a significant lead for any format - based on sales charts, anyway

and with the genre shift in consoles (we're seeing more fps and western rpg on the consoles, and they're breaking through into rts and soon probably mmo) the console gamers are realising they like these pc-native genres, and they quickly realise that the pc does it far, far better than consoles can - and they're introducing themselves to the pc, because of next gen consoles

maybe pc gaming isn't more popular in europe than it is in america, but it definitely has a strong foothold on the market

It is sad because all of America is just a console fan-base. Only certain few care for computers, we have no stores that are specific to PC gaming. Just stores that have ALL CONSOLE games, with a small PC section where you can only find those BIG NAME games.

because it's true? It's quite easy to see: shelf space, condition and ammount of gaming mags, sales etc [QUOTE="Gog"] . As far as I am aware, the console market is larger than the PC market.

THat's \because US and Japan game markets are THAT big. But then again, there are more people playing on pcs than on all consoles and handhelds combined.

PC gaming isn't unpopular here. It's just not as popular as console gaming. It's easier to just pick up a console and play games, computers require TLC. I love both, myself.

Hmm..I think if one would judge by the number of sales made on consoles versus the sale of PC-games - consoles wins with ease. Mainly, because PC has a lot more people sticking to the same game(s) for a longer timeperiod, thank multiplayer for that.

Heh, I don't think I'd even have bought Call of Duty 2, Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes if there were no multiplayer..I usually buy a new game every 3 months..maybe it takes even longer..sometimes I go on a killing spree and buy 3-4 games the same month..it all depends on release dates.

Consoles also don't have MMOs

Additionally, singleplayer-games usually gets old very fast..at least for me. I finish 'em, get bored, then I put them on the shelf for a month or so before I try them out again..but as consoles are more geared towards gaming-only, unlike PC, there aren't that many options other than to buy new games once you get bored.

With multiplayer on PC, I could stick with a game for years.

Also, I thought we were discussing popularity of PC-gaming and gaming on consoles....but what does the PC's total users have to do with this?

Hard to compare since during my visits to the States I never really cared to check out the selection at a nearby Walmart or Best Buy. But at least here in Finland, PC gaming seems to be doing ok, but I can definitely see the same trends as in the US. Almost all the big retailers have started making room for console games by clearing out their PC selection. That's why I only go to them when I'm looking for a console game, but for PC gaming I tend to shop at the smaller specialty shops.

here in slovenia (europe) it's not that pc games rule over consoles, also it is that you must be luck to find a store where can you buy the game for consoles. No surprise that there is only pc-gaming although half of people play WoW, and 1/4 of people play shooters like bf2,css,.. and 1/4 of people have good taste and take a little from everywhere and every type.

Europe has a large PC fanbase. This is why there are many European PC developers. Not that I have a problem with that, because I believe European developers make the best games.

Yup, there are some great European games out there. It's just too bad that they often lack polish and the voice work and grammar are just terrible in English versions.

This is one of the best observations I have seen on this site. The Office totally rocks! WTF do people see in American Idol anyways, if those contestants where worth a **** they would not need that crap show(that FOX promotes every chance it gets, like during a freakin NASCAR race) to be noticed. Yes most peple are stupid. Give them something brainless to watch on TV and something brainless to play like a console and they are happy.

it is, but not the kind of games you see here :) In Japan PCgaming is mostly about bishuoju games(there are more of those released each year than games for all consoles combined) and doujin scene(indie-like games)

True, but that is when you go online and order abroad. :)
But pc is still more popular in Europe/Scandinavia
