Really? I found both games boring as... maths teacher. But oh well, at least it's a decent shooter.

I don't think there's anything more terrifying than the Tickle Monster. Imagine you are drinking hot chocolate at the desk and the Tickle Monster tries to tickle your feet, what will be your response?

Amnesia ruined it for me, DS2 is not scary at all, even with headphones on late at night. Good shooter though.

I played DS1 in 1 day. It took about 9 hours I think. There were a few closet scares but it is never actually scary. I will wait until DS2 is cheaper. I cant see it justifying full price.

PS: if JangoWuzHere decides to comment, YES, this game IS scary. Maybe you are super-macho and don't get scared, but play it like I do, with high quality headphones, at night, alone and with all lights off and see if it doesn't make you jump or intense....

FelipeInside

I did play the game in the dark....alone. I didn't have any headphones, but I do have nice speakers and they were tuned up very loud. I played the entire game like this and I still did not find it scary. I find it hard to get scared by overly repetitive closet scares:roll:

I guess it depends on HOW you play the game (headphones, night, alone, dark), and also how much you get INTO the game. See, Amnesia (although I didn't play much of it), didn't scare me..... but Dead Space has that effect on me.

It has made me jump a bunch so far and the first one didnt.

Really Amnesia, 7th Guest and Dead Space2 are the only games that have freaked me out at all.

Dead Space 2: played about 20 minutes. Looks great as well, graphics top notch, and continues the story... HAD TO STOP PLAYING AGAIN CAUSE I'M SHEET SCARED !!!! lol....

Oh well, guess I will play it in short bursts.....hahahaha

I preferred the first game. I just thought it had a better atmosphere being alone and in space. The second has the space theme too obviously, but it just doesn't seem as isolated as the first game. I thought the first game had better parts in it too, like areas you enter and you think it looks pretty well done.

I played Penumbra/Amnesia/DS1 with good headphones, at night and alone and I still wasn't scared. Sure there were some minor chills but I never jumped or anything. I think especially DS1 was more "intense" than "scary".

I know that you have never been scared of anything in your entire life, and you don't immerse yourself as much as other people into stupid things like video games.

Being 33 and being scared by a video game says alot about a man. I am 28 btw just because you assumed you were playing mmos before I was born didnt make it right.

It says a man doesn't really care what strangers think about him if he's willing to say things like that. That is a good thing! 27 here, happily terrified of playing the game. (and Amnesia)

I found the first DS to be extremely tense, so much so that I had trouble playing it at times.

I'm at chapter 5 in DS 2, and I honestly think its a better game from what I have seen, but I wouldn't call it scary. It cultivates a sense of paranoia that make the jump scares more startling, and since you are always expecting them, you are always on edge. It absolutely nails the sense of sound, and the game flourishes when you hear a necromorph scuttling about but does not provide any visual cues as to its whereabouts.

It simply cant be scary however because whenever a monster show itself you can simply blast it to bits or, in a worst case scenario, mash "e" repeatedly.

i love the game, it has excellent pacing and atmosphere, but I don't think its really at all scary

Wow, you really run out of things to say quickly that you need to get down to insults already.... just cause I immerse myself into games and expect high quality DOES say something about me. On the other hand, you probably did play MMOs at the same time as me....shame you have lower standards.....

lol Avid owned in another thread....this kid is hilarious. "getting scared really says something about a man" LOL.... what are you a male chauvinist or something? who here actually believes he is 28? 28 is like one of those ages you hear on forums all the time, when 14 year old kids want to sound like they are older... they always choose 28. i mean come on, a 28 year old with a dragon ball Z avatar? i think not.Roland123_basic

That made me LOL in the middle of work......

Dead Space was a joke of a horror game, like Doom 3 it relied on shock scares which are bad. The gameplay was pretty interesting for an otherwise boring linear game.

I'm bored so I'll bite.

A)Who says the person is a man?

B)Society dictates how a man should act, as shown by the comment. Learn to think for yourself and stop throwing generalizations out.

C)Fear is a psychological trigger which is different for each person. A woman could have no sense of fear while a man could crap himself at the slighest loud noise.

D)A 28 year old shouldn't be bragging about their age on a forum, it doesn't matter.

You thought the gameplay was boring....? I thought it was pretty fresh, using tools instead of weapons....as well as "powers" and the need to dismember enemies.... (and why are shock scares bad?)

Dead Space was a joke of a horror game, like Doom 3 it relied on shock scares which are bad. The gameplay was pretty interesting for an otherwise boring linear game.

You thought the gameplay was boring....? I thought it was pretty fresh, using tools instead of weapons....as well as "powers" and the need to dismember enemies.... (and why are shock scares bad?)

You misread, the gameplay was interesting but the rest was boring. Cutting off limbs is cool but the rest of the game felt poorly thought out. "Issac this is broke go fix it." After fixing whatever problem happens there is a sudden glimmer of hope then I gotta fix something else that is broke. The game was looking for excuses to push you through the corridors and it showed.

Shock scares are bad because they rely on the shock value (hence the name). These kinds of things become predictable very quickly and lose the flair. Compare that to Amnesia or Silent Hill which uses the environment to create an everlooming threat. Something could jump out, but it also couldn't. Every step is a chance to be killed and freaks the player out because it isn't predictable. Compare this to the music that plays when a Necromorph pops up and runs at you, after killing them about 5 times it becomes a chore.

Yes, you are young aren't you?

I am nearly 33.... and what the HELL does playing an MMO have to do with getting scared on a horror game....?

Whiteblade999

Being 33 and being scared by a video game says alot about a man. I am 28 btw just because you assumed you were playing mmos before I was born didnt make it right.

I wasnt bragging about my age, I would have preferred not to mention it, seeing how I am starting to think I am to old to be posting here. This forum is mostly kids. The reason I mentioned it was because I have been going back and forth with the poster I quoted.

If I am really 28...then what? I am not the one saying a game scares me so much it takes weeks to play because I am so terrified. Give me a break

Amnesia wasn't scary but it was disturbing. Dead Space 2 is disturbing, gorey, eerie, and it gives you those jumpy moments. Scary is subjective to anyone so I expect people to say it isn't scary, yada yada. Anyways, I'm glad you're enjoying Dead Space 2, Felipe. It made me jump a good number of times and it's a fantastic game. Most importantly, Dead Space 2 still has that tension. For example, that one area with the Cryo-tanks (also in the demo, but more intense). Each new area is more varied than the first. There are more colors and better visual design and level designs. More enemy types and more fun to fight. A step above the original Dead Space.

Ahh gotcha, sorry if I read your post wrong. Yes, I guess there are 2 different types of scares.... jump scares and environmental scares.... the latter makes you tense most of the time. Of course like you said, it depends on the person, to me Dead Space has both....jump scares but also the environment feels lonely, claustrophobic and noises everywhere.

I'm about an hour and a half in. So far, it shook me up a bit a couple of times, but it's not that scary. System Shock 2 was way scarier.

I find resident evil 4 scary and i couldn't get through it so you are braver than me. Although i am very interested in scary games i can't play them because i get to scared. I guess if i had like a Gatling gun then i would be fine but when they limit my shooting abilities or give me limiting ammo thats when i get scared

Yes, the shooting ability and limited ammo adds to the sensation. It's not about one person braver than another....it's about how each person takes it. For example RE4 doesn't scare me at all, but Dead Space yes....

Dead Space 2 is a major improvement over the original. It has fantastic levels/settings in comparison. I've only made it to chapter 10, but every chapter seems to keep raising the tension more and more. Oh, and the difficulty is significantly higher than the first one. I've died 5 or 6 times compared (freaking airlocks) to the original where I only died once (door cut my arm off). Ammo isn't scarce, but considering that the enemies are more numerous, I found myself on the verge of flailing at the necromorphs more than once. I was disappointed that they made the plasma cutter a god weapon again. They really should force you to pick up more weapons to make it through the game.

Amnesia is still the best horror game I've played. I haven't brought myself to beat it yet. That doesn't prevent me from enjoying Dead Space 2, which is a ton of fun.

OK. I didn't finish the original Dead Space because some idiot spoiled for me. I started playing Dead Space 2 two days ago and I'm currently at chapter 4. The game is friggin fun. I didn't find it as scary as the original though. It has it's moments, and it had me sh*t myself a couple of times, but it's not THAT scary. I think that the developers decided to make it less scary than the original to make it more appealing to the general population. Just like what happened with FEAR2, only Dead Space 2 is awesome and FEAR 2 sucks. I'm 19, btw.
