When ToR came out I was interested but didn't wanna pay the steep fee. This got me thinking, would more people jump on to an MMO if it used a different pricing model? Made a poll, interesed to see what people would want to pay for a newly released MMO game.

And here we go again.

You really think that $15 a month for the amount of gameplay you get is steep?

He's referring to the need to pay $60 up front for the damn box.

I'm willing to pay $15/month to sub, but the only MMO I have time for is RS right now, which suits me just fine. Luckily it's cheaper too, only $6 a month or something.

No, $60 up front and then $15 per month. This relates to ToR particularly since they had the free weekend where people essentially got all the game files for free.

Ah ok, he should rephrase that sentence. Still, the $60 tag comes with a free month and extras. (as well as the actual game)

It would be nice if they could get rid of the box fee, but I don't mind paying a subscription.

Kind of a vague poll, why would anyone NOT pick free2play? lol.

Let's see, you can pay $200 for the game, or you can have it free, prepare to pick.......ready......go!

Ummm.......free?

Free to play with pay2win item store MMOs are usually absolute trash. That's why people would rather have it 15$ per month than being a complete mess of a game.

i would like a micro store with the ability to actually earn currency for in-game and actually have it mean something to earn those points. meaningful gains. i would also like for f2p games to try APB's idea of selling micro stuff in bulk in retail boxes. i would also like to see genuine sales on micro-stores.

I'll stick with buy to play or freemium. Subs don't work for me because I play 5 hours here and there. Being able to pay the price up front or pay as I go is a much more preferred method to box + sub.

Yup. I'll use this month as a random example for my college schedule. 4 exams that require 8-10 hours to preparation for each. An 8 page paper that will probably take a day to do. Research in the library which will take a day at minimum. Homework which takes an average of 15 extra hours a week, not counting projects and papers. Lecture for 12 hours each week.

I don't know about you but that crap keeps me busy so my time is limited and the hours are irregular at best. Due to that schedule I take what I can get for gaming time and it probably is about 10 to 20 hours a month unless I cut out sleep. Not worth the investment when I can get a random RPG off GOG or play something from the backlog for the same amount of time for a third to two-thirds of the price.

It depends on what it is worth to you. I try to play a variety of games, so I would be willing to pay a $60 fee and have no subscription, or at most $5 per month.

Yeah of course, it depends on how much time you can play and how much time you have free, but the value is still there. For $15 a month you get unlimited gameplay with constant patches, upgrades and new content. Compared to things like a gym membership etc, $15 is pretty cheap.

I think it's pretty fair as it is right now. You pay for the game itself and then $15 for continued maintenance and support. Obviously some games don't do this, but I honestly believe they aren't as fun as a game like WoW.

I know this may sound dumb, but RuneScape is a surprisingly good browser game now -- in my opinion, much more in-depth and prettier than it was many years ago. Worth a shot if you're looking for a casual MMO that's comparatively cheap, but still provides for a lot of fun questing and adventure. ;) But oh man, if I had more money/(mostly) more time, I'd play EVE in a second. It looks amazing.

If I pay a flat fee for something each month, I do my best to get my money's worth. I end up using most of my 2 GB data limit on my phone (never completely cap, but close.) Whenever I played an MMO and paid the fee, I played way too much. I wanted to get my money's worth.

I'm pretty good at moderating my play time for other types of games, but not subscription-based ones. Maybe others can moderate their playing better, but for monthly fee games I just can't do it.

This is why GW2 has my interest as I can finally enjoy an MMO without feeling like I have to always be on to not waste my money. :)

$15 a month is bleeding money? You spend the same amount going to McDonalds in one hour.

If you can't afford $15 a month for gaming then you shouldn't be gaming in the first place.

I technically can, but would rather not spend $15 a month on a single game these days. Granted, I did for five years for WoW. Good times were had.

Yes of course. At the end of the day it depends on the person, and if they are willing to pay or not. For example I can't afford to pay for more than one MMO at a time. But I don't agree it's an expensive amount for what you get. Like I said, going to the movies costs more and you only get 2 hours of entertainment.

It all comes down to your gaming patterns. When it comes to a MMO people will play the game for 1 month,

then take a month off, and then play it for 2 weeks, followed by taking another month off. Then they might

play it for 2-3 months, take a month off and play the game maybe once a week, etc, etc, etc. I'm not going

to pay $15 dollars if I only end up playing the game for 1 hour every week, or just play for 1 week and then

end up not playing for another 2 months.

Which is why I only play MMOs like GW2 where you only pay for the box and you are set to go.

No, everything you said is a reason why SOMEONE would consider the $15 too expensive. It's the same as a gym. You pay $50 a month and can go whenever you want. If you don't go for 2 months then don't blame the gym for the price.

So what type of people are you talking about then? People that play an MMO everyday and still

complain that $15 dollars is too high?

Also your Gym analogy is flawed, the difference between a Gym and an MMO is that you have to be commited

to have a set regular schedule when going to the Gym. With an MMO it doesn't affect you if you stop for a

month or 2, but with a Gym it does.

I'm talking about people in general that complain. An MMO charges you $15 a month for unlimited gameplay 24/7 (except server maintenance which is a few hours), unlimited content with new patches, fixes and DLCs constantly being introduced as well as unlimited customer support. All this for $15 a month, which most people would spend on an hour of drinks, or going to the movies, etc etc. You could say then that I don't want to pay $80 a month for my internet because there are times when I don't use it?

NOTE: To be fair, I personally think that the $15 a month formula is going out of fashion, and more and more MMOs are using the F2P model.

Well it doesn't matter for paying the internet bill since there isn't any other option. Unlike with MMOs,

various of choices. Also, when don't we use the internet? lol, I am on it everyday to at least check

the news of various things while checking my 4 different emails.

I'm glad the $15 dollar a month subscription is going out of style. It has always been a flawed

marketing technique.

My philosophy is that if I can't make 1 hour = 1 dollar for a video game, then that game is not

worth that price. So if the game is $60 dollars, it must be a game that provides minimum 60

hours of gameplay.

Stream_Beta

I'm talking about people in general that complain. An MMO charges you $15 a month for unlimited gameplay 24/7 (except server maintenance which is a few hours), unlimited content with new patches, fixes and DLCs constantly being introduced as well as unlimited customer support. All this for $15 a month, which most people would spend on an hour of drinks, or going to the movies, etc etc. You could say then that I don't want to pay $80 a month for my internet because there are times when I don't use it?

Well it doesn't matter for paying the internet bill since there isn't any other option. Unlike with MMOs,

various of choices. Also, when don't we use the internet? lol, I am on it everyday to at least check

the news of various things while checking my 4 different emails.

I'm glad the $15 dollar a month subscription is going out of style. It has always been a flawed

marketing technique.

My philosophy is that if I can't make 1 hour = 1 dollar for a video game, then that game is not

worth that price. So if the game is $60 dollars, it must be a game that provides minimum 60

hours of gameplay.

ehhh, an MMO does that.

It's $15 a month and provides gameplay for 30 days...

I chose $60 for the box and $15 a month because I am willing to pay for great games. If I feel that a game moves forward in many areas, such as gameplay innovation, complexity, and graphics, and I feel that it is a great game overall, I will open my wallet and pay big money for it. What I want to see are great games, and yeah, charge premium, because great games are worth it. Publishers and developers need to stop scraping the bottom of the barrel with this free-to-play garbage.

Nearly all cash shops in mmorpgs give advantages. Even if it's just extra experience for a length of time, that's still an advantage. I like a fair playing field within a virtual world. Let the players who play the hardest and smartest reap the greatest rewards, not the ones who spent money at the cash shop.

That last statement I wrote wasn't directed at MMOs. But at every other

game that is a 1 time payment.

^^ Ahh, gotcha. As for the model going out of style, I believe so. In the past it worked because of a few reasons. There weren't so many MMOs out there (or so many games released constantly), so people could dedicate a lot of time into them and feel the $15 was worth it. These days, with so much competition, players play an MMO for a bit but then move on, therefore they don't want the $15 bill monthly. I would love for example to be able to play both SWTOR and The Secret World at the same time, but I can't pay for 2 at the same time.

That is a very good point. There is a lot more variety in gaming nowadays compared to 10 years ago.

Mainly with how big Indie games have become over the past few years. Personally I am fine with the

microtransaction route, AS LONG as if the content they provide doesn't impact the gameplay or give

certain players an advantage. With Arenanet, they have been pretty good about that with the content

they provided in GW1, so hopefully they stay true to that in GW2.

The current standard, because it's good enough, however ToR for example is too expensive, 60$/€ is outrageous for a MMO, unless they plan on offering 2 months with it.

F2P. If it is designed like Firefall and Planetside 2, then it will be well balanced.

F2P will get me to try the game out. I've tried just about every F2P game that even remotely interested me since it was free. I'm glad I did because I discovered World of Tanks. I love this game and I have paid for premium content after playing it for a few months. I would have never even tried it if I had to pay upfront. I think devs should look at F2P as a model, there's a lot of games I'm interested in but not if I have to sink cash just for a look.

If GW2 gets it right with no subscription then i vote that. Otherwise i'd prefer to have a subscription to ensure support and decent servers.

If it's a really good game, I don't mind paying £8.99 per month.

Guild Wars isn't an MMO. If I had a quid for every time I've written that I'd be retired.

All models make sense to me in some way. The traditional model has the $50-60 box paying for the development and the subscription fees paying for the continued development, hosting, etc. The Guild Wars model proved that subscriptions aren't necessary if you're willing to skimp on certain features. One-time subscription fee grabs the money up-front so they can invest immediately. Free to play realizes there are some fools out there who will drop hundreds on little items. For me, it depends on each game, how much I am getting out of it, and how much the developers are putting into the game. I paid traditionally for Planetside, Everquest 2, and City of Heroes. Bought Guild Wars. Bought a lifetime subscription to LOTRO...
