I know I'm going to get flamed for this

Most overrated:

Oblivion -> Boring, boring, boring... and well repetitive(after 2 or 3 oblivion gates). Some great mods that add to the combat, but still doesn't get me through some aspects of the game that are just flat out unappealing to play.

Fallout 3 -> Pretty much the same reason as oblivion, except the environment is extraordinarily bland (Oblivion > Fallout 3). Oh, and I hated the combat system.

Far Cry 2 -> God awful game... Horrid gunplay, AI, and story (****ing medication too). This game should studied to prevent future catastrophes.

Slightly overrated:

Starcraft -> Not saying it's bad, but it's not nearly as 'god like' as people make it out to be. 640x480 makes my eyes bleed...

CS 1.6 -> (see above comment as well)

Left 4 Dead -> Not much replay value for such a short game.

Crysis-> Needed better level design, more freedom, and less aliens.

Killzone 2

MGS4

HALO 2 and 3

MW&MW2

DMC series

Two Worlds

Just Cause 2

TerrorRizzing

why not add uncharted 1 & 2, gears of war 1 & 2, and most exclusive console games.

Because I enjoyed those games and didnt feel that they were rated higher than what i thaught of them...

BTW, Gears wasnt exclusive and out of the 9 games I listed only 3 of those were exclusives.

So, if they were rated higher than you though they should, then they would be overrated? You must have like the most important opinion ever, for something as subjective as video games, and YOU have the RIGHT view, sweet. Good deal.

A lot of these games are looked upon as "overrated" years later. When they first came out, they did something that other games didn't (such as Halo 2's multiplayer changing the way console multiplayer was approached).

What games do you think don't live up to the hype?

For me I think it would have to be:

1. Crysis

2. HALO

3. (Tied) Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare / Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

PredatorRules

I think you're wrong - maybe you're right about Halo.

anyway IMO most overrated game is GTA4 - a 10/10? it's the best in the series but a 10/10? I bet Mafia 2 won't get that score

agreed the original Mafia was better than GTA4, and it didn't get 10.

I like GTA 4, even though it felt a bit stripped down after SA. I agree though Mafia 1 even rivaled VC, and SA. I am so excited for 2.

No, If a game scores higher than I believe it deserved then I would call that game overrated which would be my opinion...

Just like coolmonkeykid above thinks COD4 is overrated and PernicioEnigma doesnt think GTAIV deserved the score it got, they are entitled to their opinions as much as you or me. Why not try adding something to contribute to the thread topic instead of posting multiple troll posts suggesting that peoples own opinions are wrong? Also show me where I said my view was the right one, ...thats right, you cant, because I didnt, Good deal!

[QUOTE="w4rrior17"]They either review it well because 1. They liked it. or 2. They were paid off. Either way being overrated has nothing to do with it. You calling a series overrated means you think your opinion is right, and theirs is wrong. But we all know opinions can't be either. The thread should be renamed something like "Popular games you don't like"w4rrior17

Deus Ex has a 8.2 here, Modern Warfare 2 has 9 on consoles and 8.5 on PC.

Now tell me something is not wrong here.

Probably two different people with two different opinions, nothing wrong with that. Plus, we're talking about "expert reviews", who really cares?

With your philosophy theirs no such thing as a good or bad game, only opinions. If Big Rigs was given a 9 we still couldnt say its overrated?

Opinion only goes so far. Saying Pink Floyd is better than a wedding band that never wrote a song is stating a fact, not opinion.

PC Gamer magazine put StarCraft 2 on three front covers and talk about it every other issue since its announcement and its heavily publicized by everyone else. I would call it overrated with all the hype surrounding it.

Although it's from your old list, I understood HL2, but the first?! Mind sharing what prompted you to it?

Bioware on the box.

-wildflower-

Even NeverWinter Nights (NWN) 1?

My list:

  1. GuildWars: OMG! I bought this game like 50-60$ with all the hype and played not even 40 hours then, after not running it for a few weeks, I thought I should sell it while it's worth something.
  2. Oblivion: Good engine, graphics and side-quests but the main quest SUCK! I like the game overall but can't get past the fail.
  3. Halo: Not so bad as I saw the suckage from a mile away but all the hype... This game make me think of what a good expansion of Unreal Tournament X (latest version) would be like, but not much of a standalone.

I thought the original campaign for NWN was pretty mediocre at best. Some of the mods people made for the game were pretty fun but I don't really like to include what the community does with a game as part of my opinion of said game. Although things like community patches that fix or restore content are probably my one exception to that rule.

I wasn't feeling it when I first played the game (when it was released, not recently), I personally didn't find anything spectacular about it, sure it was very long for that time, and pretty diverse but it was mostly claustrophobic corridors, same few aliens popping out from the usual places, but what killed it for me was the atmosphere created by all those textures...it had like 3 colors and the occasional green toxic goo, yet people were raving about it being the best game ever created, even today some consider it better than the 2nd.

2 was enjoyable but still, I didn't find it as superb, flawless as others did, in fact it had lots of glitches (and I managed to play it just last year since I couldn't stand before because of the horrible FOV and motion sickness, but I played it little by little and finished it, still....bugs/glitches after years? and they weren't some hard to spot ones, they were right in your face).

Nah, that only happens when a big exclusive flops hardly and SW gets bloated up with damage control threads. We don't see many lemmings here on the PC board.

This is definitely an issue! Developers having their eggs in different baskets (consoles) surely will amount to neglect. Another thing, just like music industry, it seem people are much more invested in their first product to make a name for themselves and just "keep the recipe" for other ones thus not thinking it enough, another factor for neglect.

I guess if more people would read reviews and magazines, their sale would be affected (not even buying in the first place instead of being disappointed) and it would become "enough"of a problem...

In my honest opinion of-course it's Mass Effect 2. Not only it's the most shallow RPG I've ever played, but it's also boring, pretentious, badly written, relies on fetch quests, and it doesn't get good until the last hour of the game.

People criticize Oblivion for being too shallow...honestly.

since we are bringing console games into it, demons souls is the most overrated game of all time, atleast by critics and hardcore sony fans. I swear everyone I know who tries it hates it because of its extreme clunkiness, narrow dark hallways, and genericness. These people should try a few pc rpgs!

TerrorRizzing

I love my ps3 and enjoy alot of the games on it but man... I just cant see why peopel love Demon Souls so much?
Its not even an rpg and the gameplay was borign as hell to me personally.

I find Gothic1-3, The Witcher, Lost Odyssey, Risen and Dragon Age to be much better rpgs this gen but Demon Souls gets RPG of the year and alot think its best rpg this gen.

I just didnt see what all the fuss was about.

every Blizzard game without the word "Diablo" in the title. it's not their fault their fans are morons who hail unoriginal (if well-executed) games as the creators of genres. unfortunately more complex and influential and innovative games have been swept under the rug as a result of this.chaingun543
So because you like solid, high quality games that stick to the original formula, you're a moron? I'd be a moron every day if developers actually made good games ;) not just those that are good enough only for conceited teens, cool guys that go zomfg at the sight of violence and blood, kids that want their games to do most of their job, and guys that would buy any game if it has mindless shooting/killing in it. I recommend you the movie Idiocracy, what you call moron = person that is still able to think and looks for stimulating things, and what you'd call smart or w/e = what you'll see as the average/highly intellectual person in that movie....in out future.

A guy with a chris nolan movie as his sig is calling something pretentious. I love it.

do you know what pretentious means? i suspect not. ME2 has the plot of basically a generic action sci fi movie, and it knows it. Someone needs to tell Christopher Nolan his movies aren't that important ;) Calling something shallow / badly written and not specifying at all is more pretentious than ME2.

I think ME2 is a great example of an action RPG. ME1 was extremely tedious and many of the RPG elements were simply useless. ME2 ramped the gameplay up (which is usually a weakness in bioware games) and did a better job developing better characters. It's not Baldur's Gate 2, but it's hardly overrated. And when you look at the quality of writing of most video games, ME2 is quite a bit better (though not amazing obviously...shepherd in particular has a lot of cheese, but the interactions with the characters is really well-written most of the time).

I'd love to discuss it in more detail but you just threw out a bunch of stock pseudo intellectual criticisms so I can't really refute anything concrete.

No 'Halo' answer from me. If any Halo game comes close to not deserving its praise, I'd say it's Halo 3. It's simple fun.

For me, the most overrated of this generation would be MW2. I was a little irked by MW1 already, and I just can't stand Call of Duty anymore, especially the multiplayer. I haven't had tons of fun with COD since COD 2, where not everything was special forces and small squads. It changed my perception of war, and the set pieces wee brilliant, not generic like mw's.

The military aspects were more modern, without a doubt (battles aren't as huge, as I've hinted), though I ultimately ended up not enjoying MW's campaign as much. What was really the final straw for me was the MP. I couldn't find any games that had under 24 people and were not HC. I managed to joined a local clan for a while and MW's multiplayer became a whole other game, and things were slower but definitely more fun.

Agree with everything you've said here. (except the halo comment, those games are overrated as **** :))

They took a great franchise and turned it into a Michael Bay movie.

Aside from the unforgivable fact that MW2 has no dedicated servers, it's pretty sad how gimmicky the multiplayer has become. The original Call of Duty, a game with no killstreak bonuses, no perks, no unlockable weapons, somehow had a much higher skill cap and required much more strategy as a team and lent itself far better to competition. To me, that says everything.

Not sure where you got that from, all Blizzard fans say that Blizzard games are great and some of the best in the genre, some call them the best ever (like most do, when it's about their favorite games), but I personally never saw a single Blizz fan, in these 17 years of being a Blizzard fan, say that Blizz's games started a revolution, one game could be called a revolution, Blackthorne but sadly it's mostly forgotten, it's like it never existed. Diablo might be their only revolutionary game, because it pretty much was and still is the best this genre ever achieved, the rest are just solid, fun, huge (wow), diverse and highly balanced (starcraft) games.

Hmm, 1.halo ( too simplistic and weak graphics and gameplay, yet it gets high ratings and not get criticized by reviewers for its weak parts that other fps do get bad criticisms ) 2 .Assasin creed (Stab people in the back and run on rooftops, then do it again and again, thats it) 3.gta iv (Gta sa had better: story, characters, more guns, more vehicles, more and bigger maps, more things to do and more unique missions with less repettion, if anything its a step back yet it gets a 10) 4.gears of war (Weak story or should i say non existant? Bad combat, bad characters, bad weapons and gameplay, plus too simple, yet it gets a 9.6) 4.crysis (If its high rating were for the graphics and technology, then i agree, but the gameplay is rather unfinished and unimpressive. Well its not as simple as gears of war, but still the abilities they implemented that are stolen from other older games...are not very well implemented in the game and some of the choices the developes made in the game are rather stupid and pull the game down instead of make it shine. Eg: the missile launcher was stupid, id rather a single use launcher or one that you can reload, also many abilities seemed badly implemented, i am glad they fix those tings in crysis 2. Now apart from that other things that matter in a fps, like combat or fun levels...well, they were simply terrible, far cry did it much better in 2004. ) 5. Half life 2 (I loved half life, but half life 2? Well it felt rather random, with very weak fps gunplay, and weaker ai than half life, plus bad weapons and some of the physic challenges you had to solve in the way were rather stupid than particulary smart of fun. An annoyance. I was like "do i play an fps or an adventure game?" I prefered far cry and doom 3 instead) 6.ehhh i dunno, mass effect? (Lets just say kotor has done what mass effect has done much better, story, gameplay, combat, ai, dialogues, characters, planets, etc, etc, etc. I was highly underwellmed by mass effect, too linear and simplistic with bad answers to the story related questions and apart from dialogues and combat, there is not much else to do. Alpha protocol is clearly better) 7. Fable (when games like oblivion are around, that game seems small and insignificant) 8. Mafia (I wont argue with having a good story, but come to think of it it was not THAT great and combat and driving were an extremely hard mess plus unfair and apart from the main compaign, there was not much else to do in freeplay. 9. Bioshock. ( I liked the game but in comparison with system shock 2? I thought that the gameplay was way too simple for no apparent reason and the story was a rip off and combat was not fun at all, neither the levels i run into) 10 L4d (Fun, but not that much fun, lets just say l4d2 is 10 times better and more complete. 11stalker soc (well in comparison with fallout 3 and borderlands it seems rather weak and small, i would prefer a bigger more complete open ended experiance with more fun combat) Anyway thats what i can think for now.

Fable is a 2004 game, Oblivion 2006...they don't even compete with each other, and nobody should compare them since even that insignificant game has more life into it than Oblivion, Patrik Stewart is great, but he alone can't turn garbage into gold.

1. Assassin's Creed - I just didn't have any fun playing this. Very repetitive, and the parts that repeated weren't really interesting.

2. Bioshock - It's a really cool atmosphere, but the gameplay didn't grab me, and people talk about it like it's the best game ever.

3. The Halo franchise - The first one really was a big deal, but it's since jumped the shark.

4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - It's fun, don't get me wrong. But people were ready to call it GOTY... gimme a break.

5. Metroid Prime - The Metroid franchise hit its peak with Super Metroid on the SNES... and then proceeded to completely change the formula.

Other than that, I can understand the hype most other popular games get, even if they're just not my thing.

@dakan45

Far too many of your games you say are overrated because either their sequels or games that came out years after them were better?

GTA

Halo

GOW lqtm (both god of war and gears of war)

Madden

Counterstrike

TF2

WoW.

Crysis

COD

HL2

Even though I may like (some) of these, they are over-rated.

Sorry but i dissagree. Oblivion has more substance. For once it has actual dialogues and a big enviroment to explore. Plus a much better compaign. But anyway if the comparison seems wrong then feel free to compare it with morrowind and gothic 1 and 2, they are still better. As for the voice actors? I hate British accent in fable so oblivion still wins for me and its a pretty good game not garbage, just play it as a sandbox game and not an rpg. Point is: in comparison with current multiplatform games that pose to have rpg elements.... its actual a much better game, thus a great game. .

I am not sure i understand the question, so please explain me better what you just ask me. But those "far too many" games are not too many to me since i play tons more over the years.

I don't know about you but comparing a decent 8.3 game like Fable with the 10 Oblivion that is extremely cheap, with only a few voice actors, some of the worst lines I've ever read, a story so bad it almost doesn't exist, lack of diversity, horrible animations, that has only two good features, graphics and size, calling the solid 8.3 game overrated is pretty stupid, especially because you somehow felt the need to defend the highly overrated Oblivion against it.

Max Payne was the highest rated shooter on pc the year Halo was released. As much as I like Max Payne, I have to say Halo wipes the floor with it. Combat Evolved is a fitting name to add onto Halowhen you consider the best pc shooters of 2001 were Red Faction, Serious Sam and RTCW.

I personally like the story and characters better in GTA 4. GTA 4 is a huge evolution over GTA SA in many ways. Physics, ai and combat are hugely improved. Bigger maps automatically makesa gamebetter? So I guess Just Cause 2 is the best open world game then?
