1. episode 2
2. portal
3. team fortress 2
on second thought, just give it to the orange box. of course, i haven't played crysis, ut3, or bioshock, so i'm not in position to make such an assessment, but i have not had this much fun with a game (any of the 3) since...dare i say, ever!
i would like the witcher to be goty, but it lacks this "quality" aspect. The game is absolutely great, but it doesnt have this quality finish that splits great games from goty. The Witcher is a diamond in the rough, it needs a little trimming to make it perfect. This was probably due to the lower budget.greatmax1
This is absolutely dead on. The animations in The Witcher kill me. If they would have spent a little more time making the character models more expressive and the interface more streamlined, it would without a doubt be the game of the year. Instead I think Mass Effect is going to take RPG of the year, though it gets the PC category by default.
For me, the GOTY is Portal. The fact that the bathroom stall at work (IT firm with 2000 employees) has "The cake is a lie" scribbled on it alone shows that it has had more impact upon the community at large than any other game. Heck, it's scribbled in the bathroom stall at The Ritz, one of the nicer bars in town. I absolutely cannot wait to see what is done with this concept in the near future.
my GotY: The Witcher.
second best game of the year: Biocshock (not PC exclusive hurts it a bit).
the one will get the award: Crysis.
Agreed. Crysis is very well done, but it's nothing ground breaking unless you're a graphics whore. IMO witcher got shafter for a score. Shoulda been higher.
brianpoetzel
actually, go by the scores that Crysis, WiC, and GoW the like (good graphic and shallower gameplay)get, I'd say The Witcher's score is about right (deep gameplay, while the graphic is decent).
Crysis. It was the most fun I had gaming this year.
Pros: Non stop action. Open ended game play / replayability. Nano suit / customizable weapons. Destructible environments / graphics. Raises the bar for future shooters.
Cons: A couple glitch's. Short.

Exactly.
The question to ask here is this: why WOULDNT Crysis get GOTY?
Lets see...hmmmm...its a bit too demanding? Thats not exactly a con; if anything, it adds to its next-gen aura and may even get credit for blazing the path to near-photorealism.
What else is wrong with Crysis? I suppose its a bit short, but then again every time you play it, the game will be different. Different suit modes to use, different weapons, and different paths to take. Not to mention the awesome multiplayer.
Ya, I cant think of one reason why, from a near-objective standpoint, Crysis shouldnt win.
I would like other titles to win, such as Portal and The Witcher, but that is just silly since they hit a soft spot on me.
[QUOTE="TotalX5"]WiC is a POS imho. I played it for 2 hours and got bored, its nice at the begining but theres nothing but graphics to hold you, i pushed my self to finish the camp even though the game was so boring to play.
I havn't tried Crysis, but if it hadcrappy graphics, would it be GOTY? No its just like any other FPS i'm guessing.
The Witcher deserves GOTY it only got a 8.5 on GS because they put down the score because of lip-syncing and voice acting was a bit off, but i mean its avaliable in like 8 languages, give it a break, that doesn't make a game. It deserved easily a 9 or 9.5.
DarkRecruit
So you played WiC's singleplayer, and called it bad without playing the MULTIPLAYER which is the best part of the game. Then you don't play Crysis and say it is probably "just another fps". stop assuming so much
Did i say i didn't play the multiplayer? Because i did play it, and for the whole 4 hours, it sucked. I was just stating that it was boring completeing the single player.
Orange Box, 5 of the great games in 1 box, Call of Duty for intense action, Crysis...for just being crysis
I.M.O.: COD 4- It ran so nicely on my computer with med-high settings on. I think this game deserves to win because it didnt have to take my computer to the next gen system to run it. When Isaw the preview, Ihad doubts about whether it will be able to run on my computer. But,its very well optimized to run great onlow levelsystems. I don't care much about the short single player, I just love the multiplayer action on this game. Calling airstrikes!!!
I.Y.O.: Crysis- yes, I still have AGP graphic cards with single cpu running. Which is the reason why i never even bothered buying this game. But from the looks of it, it looks nice but I can't judge if its good or not because I never played it.
Like a lot of others, my money would be on Crysis or Bioshock. Both seem have both the quality, game play and prestige you'd expect while at the same time both seem to offer something new that you havent seen done or done as well in a long time (Crysis incredible graphics while still offering some of the best FPS action in any game, Bioshock for it's storytelling and atmosphear, any game thats being hailed as the poof that computer games can be art has a good shot at GOTY).
Runner ups:
Orange Box (likely to win puzzle / casual / misc catagory due to portal and because evryone thinks it deserves to win something), tons of content, all devlivered at a VERY high quality. Few other boxes out there offer as much fun pr. dollar as this one.
COD4 Another huge hit. Great action and well told (if very short) single player campaign. Personally I don't really see it as GOTY material. While fun it's just to simple in terms of single player. There's really very few options on how to approach or complete an objective, also it dosent reallyplay all thatdiffrent from the general game play of previous COD games.
The Witcher, Best RPG. While it's somewhat blemished by a somewhat buggy release and relativly little hype due to its small first time publisher there just hasent been a lot of RPGs this year and hey, it's well deserved.
World in Conflict (Likely to win stategy of the year). Hailed as a reinvention of the RTS genre with great story and setting. Personally I was kinda disapointed but hey each to their own.
I'm 3/4 through Crysis, 1/2 through The Witcher, beat orange box, beat stalker(twice), & bioshock.
They are all great games, but Crysis contiues to amaze me beyond anything I've ever played. I thought stalker would have a good chance - I will always love that game, but crysis is just too amazing.
Okay, I'm confused. Are we talking GOTY or PCGOTY? Because those are two very different awards. If it's PCGOTY, then it's gotta go to The Witcher, World in Conflict, or Crysis, since those are the only worthy candidates that aren't multiplatform. If it's simply GOTY, it's definitely going to Halo 3.
I personally think Halo 3 is a mediocre at-best shooter with dull gameplay, sub-par graphics, and an absolutely horrible community. I wouldn't give it more then an 8.0, probably less. But, it will (unfortunately)get all around GOTY simply because of how huge it was on release. It was the most overly hyped, overly advertised game, but it sold like crazy and made more noise both in and outside the gaming community then anything else this year. Let me reiterate how crappy the game is, but my money is on Halo 3 for GOTY.
Oh, and whoever said Crysis is just a copy of Deus Ex...what the fluck are you smoking?
I "think" it will be Crysis. I "hope" that it will be the Witcher. As much as I love Crysis. Quality RPG's need more recognition or the genre is going to die.foxhound_fox
I kind of feel the same way. Crysis is amazing, but I'm kind of rootin' for the underdog.
Deservedly CRYSIS will get it - simply for innovation and graphic enhancements. However, you need a decent high priced rig to get the benefit of the game. Which is nice - but sad for us 3 year old GPUs and Graphic cards.
For GREAT Graphics and uninterrupted gameplay on older systems. I pick COD4 - hands down. No bugs, fast gameplay and ideal graphics make this my GOTY award.
The developers really looked at everyone ( all PC users out there) and not just the ones with the "Cadillac" rigs.
My hat is off to Infinity Ward for making an excellent playing game to the COD series. New and different and very well done.
Oh, and whoever said Crysis is just a copy of Deus Ex...what the fluck are you smoking?

That would be me. And I meant what I said dispite not smoking anything whatsoever. Don't get me wrong here I love Crysis and find it engrossing and challenging but when I see so many people say a game is innovative I just have to let the devils advocate in me out. Deus Ex has a super human enabled protagonsit with a varied array of weapons to choose from all of which can be modified to suit the players style. How is this any different from Crysis? Super Strength, Super Speed, Cloak, Super Armor..Been there done that ala Deus-Ex. Imo Crysis could do far worse than being compared to one of the all time greatest FPS and also a GOTY recipient itself.

I don't know if I agree on the "copy of Deus Ex"-thing, but good point on the suit... I still do not understand where people see the innovation in Crysis besides the purty graphics.

I must say I dont really see much of a similarity between Crysis and Deus Ex. Actually I'd say Bioshock and Deus Ex have a lot more in common. While all three have some kind of 'super human ability'. Bioshock and Deus Ex both have a strong RP undercurrent, a great foucs on story, dialog and NPC interaction to one extent or another. In my oppinion Crysis plays very diffrent from Deus Ex. :)
The Orange Box gets my vote:
-Episode 2 is beautiful, intense and fun all around.
-Portal is extremely fun and different
-Team Fortress - need I say more?
Crysis doesn't deserve it because it's buggy and multiplayer doesn't work correctly. Plus EA ticked me off big time (yes I pre-ordered through EA store).
Wow!!! Just look at the candidates to be de top gaming pc of the year... there r so many then years be4. Guess it' ll be another record history for pc gaming.
Well, for me, I choose crysis, though i still not playing yet. But the majority is there..you can definitely tells it.But, I want MOHA Airborne or Bioshock to be GOTY. Orange Box, CoD4 can be title contender.
STALKER or HL2 Ep2
I had more fun playing through both of these than anything else. WiC is a close runner up as well. I can't wait for Clear Skies. I would rather have another STALKER than another Crysis, just being honest here.
I love a great PC game as much as the next guy, in fact FPS is my favorite genre. I buy pretty much any FPS game that scores better than a 7, yet I've played the Crysis demo and I have no desire to purchase the full game whatsoever.
Crysis is basically a sub-par Far cry (a jurassic park style story is SO much more convining that stupid robotic tentacles from space, and at least Far cry had a real ending), with unimproved AI and worse level design (wtf is up with the alien levels? I'm guessing Crytek never played the Xen levels on the original half life). The graphics seem to be its main selling point but even with my way above average system I'd much rather play Far cry on very high than Crysis on medium. The colours in Far cry just looked so much more tropical.
I think it's the biggest injustice in game review history that Gamespot bragged about Crysis rewriting the rules for the FPS genre. There is actually nothing that I would like to take from crysis and add into any other well respected shooter like Episode 2. The crysuit works pretty well but it makes things far too easy. It turns the game into a big sandbox where its almost impossible to die because you are a big self regenerating carebear and the koreans are brainless moomins. The guns are even total rubbish. I liked CoD4 because the guns actually feel like guns! I.e. they do damage! In crysis the guns sound about as intimidating as peewee herman and your bullets have the stopping power of a fly hitting your windshield.
I am just shocked that so many gamers are willing to stake the reputation of PC gaming on such a shallow mediocre shooter as Crysis. If it wins GOTY then I, for one, will be extremely embrassed as a PC gamer.
My vote goes for the witcher. Brilliant story. Beautiful environments even if it isn't as technically adept as crysis. Tasteful humor. And it gripped me from start to finish, which is more than i can say for the 40 minute crysis demo.
HL2:Episode 2 for me
Every location in it is designed with a certain purpose. There is absolutely no 'filler' content in the game, there's a thought behind everything. It just struck me as amazing, I haven't seen that in any other game. Most games are like 'hey, let's make a level!' and most levels are just levels. Here, everything is cohesive. Everything in the game is made to be a part of the whole. Personally, I think that game is art, but maybe we shouldn't get into that.
