Alot of you probably already know for a fact that PC gaming isn't going extinct but every now and then you'll come across a funny type of signature that'll predict "the end of PC gaming" or other equally dumb comments. Are these ppl seeking atention or do they want to get the glory when competitive, professional gaming ACTAULLY ends. I don't think I've ever seen Fatal1ty play on an Xbox 360, or at least not seriously.

Here are some reasons why PC gaming ISN'T going to end-

-There is way too much money to loose. If PC gaming comes to an end almost every computer hardware and alot of software manufacturers will be affected. Just a few would be: Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Microsoft, Antec, Thermaltake, Asus and especialy Zalman. Asus, Nvidia and Ati have supported alot of gaming developers, including Ati for Half-Life 2 Episode 2.

-Microsoft making alot of Xbox exlusives (such as Fable 2, Gears of War 2 and Halo 3) is another reason that PC gaming isn't coming to an end. If gaming were to cease on PC, the dent in Windows sales would be so big it would be funny. They would lose almost all their gaming customers and of the amount left alot would make the switch to the free, more user friendly (debatable) Linux. So, if there was a threat to gaming on PC Microsoft would do ANYTHING to save it. It would be in their best interest to keep PC gaming alive. Microsoft making Xbox exlusives is a sure sign that they know PC gaming is fine where it is, the only threat to them, at the moment, is the PS3 and Wii.

-If pirating was such a big issue Eastern European developers would start making less PC exclusives and more games for consoles. Their investments seem to be fine where they are and they will continue to make games like ArmA II and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat for PC and PC only.

-There are so many gamers playing MMO's on PC that if there was a switch it would be so dramatic that very few ppl would survive. Imagine the WOW survers getting shut down. Ppl would stop dying from playing 50+ hours straight and start dying from going without. Imagine that, they come out from their various attics and sun starved rooms. They'd die after 15 hours of exposure.

-Games like Crysis would never be seen agian, graphics would end up being upgraded only every generation. A lot of hype would be lost.

Bottom line developers aren't selling games because entertaining ppl and keeping them happy makes them feel good about themselves. They do it for money and a fair amount of that is made off of PC gamers. Not to mention almost all profesional gaming is done on PC. PC gaming ISN'T going to end.

I don't think you'd be considered bright if you tried to predict the end of PC gaming, you may just end up standing there awkwardly.

P.S. Anyone who's also waiting for the release of Call of Pripyat say "I".

Orledjro

I am. Will be day 1 buy for me. :)

On topic, no I don't think it will. It will probably change some way in the future, but for better or worse? Dunno. In any case, nothing will stop us from playing the old games, and PC has a HUGE catalogue of games that I've yet to play, like literally thousands. So even if PC gaming died *right now*, the existing game library would keep me entertained for the rest of my life.

I'm also looking more and more towards Eastern Europe to guarantee PC gaming's future. Games are way overpriced, and companies that are prepared to roll games out at a lower profit should thrive in the age of digital distribution.

Your hardware point's a good one too. The vast majority of games now have a minute of animations for Intel, Nvidia etc. at the beginning - it's pretty obvious those companies have a big interest in keeping PC gaming afloat on some level.

Oh, and I'm totally with you on Call of Pripyat.

Ask me if it is by the end of next year. Although some will decry this, I think its been a pretty slim year for PC Gaming this year. I expect a lot more next year and there are some great titles coming out, mostly multiplatform titles of course.

PC gaming is weak and WILL become weaker. but never dies. because there are enough awesome exlusive old games form past to keep it up. there are still people who are interested in old games {like myself} and play them with PC.

It will happen, no doubt, but that's not to say current style console gaming will replace it. I think in 20 years the games industry will be unrecognisable. My main concern is how stupid little teenage girls are causing laptop sales to skyrocket, and I am concerned the PC itself may be killed by its style-consious evil twin: the laptop.

PC will never die as gaming platform, because PC hardware will always exist and you always will be able to play games with.

Also, PC games sales are stronger than ever. Never before PC gamers paid 11 millions of monthly fees in a single MMORPG nor never before the digital sales from Blizzard Store, Steam, etc. were as huge . The fact that gaming is consoles is stronger than before doesn't make less healthy the situation in PC. less exclusives in PC? Yes, but also old developers not interested before in the PC platform now making excellent ports (Capcom, Konami) or working in PC titles distribution (Namco).

Anyway, as long as Diablo III and or Universe Of Starcraft reach PC, this generation of consoles is death. I barely touch my PS3 and 360 in the last 9 months.

I'm thinking about building my first gaming PC, so this concerns me somewhat. What makes people think PC gaming is dying? Is it because games are being developed on consoles first and ported to PC? Or there's more money to be had on consoles? Not really sure as I haven't kept up with PC gaming too much beyond Diablo and some other series.

I actually think PC gaming will die :( soon it will just be a big collection of bad ports and MMO's. It will not completely die out, there will still be a lot playing old games and MMO's. But for the new games that get ported over, I doubt it.

I think when the next wave of consoles hit it will be hard to compete with them, the consoles now are really good, so the next wave i'm imagining will be even more impressive.

I feel we are talking ourselves into the situation, how many of these treads have you seen since 2005? If games are made for any platform on PC then no, PC gaming will never die.

PC gaming won't die as long as companies like Valve and Blizzard still exist. They know how to tackle piracy and their games are of such good quality people don't mind spending their money.

Correct. It is a shame that both of these companies have had petitions against them for games that aren't even released yet. It must be a test of their patience. Boycotters will only serve to hurt this industry.

Nex wave of console will kill, basically, the actual wave of consoles. See the last gen: only PS2 survives now as gaming platform, and it will be only for a few years more. You can still see games from 1999 (Counter Strike), 2000 (Diablo), 2002 (Warcraft III), 2005 (Battlefield 2) being very popular at this moment. I have no faith in a new gen of consoles with near to 0% support to keyboard and mouse, in which you will pay for maps and new content -sometimes really ridiculous stuff- instead of enjoying it freely thanx to the amazing mod community in PC.

Another topic about the unending discussion. PC gaming will never die....... it's the most stupid thing one can speculate about. Consoles die constantly as developers stop producing games for older platforms. Even if developers stop producing PC games for whatever reason that might be there will always be people that still make games for the PC. I like my games hard, with loads of micro management and strategic play. Consoles don't offer that, games like civilization, football managers, tycoons, city builders and RTS are still PC only. I don't like racing, platforming or any games on consoles simply becaus they are to simple. PC gaming is for a certain type of gamers and console gaming is for the casual gamers. I do agree that PC games get simplified more and more and i hate that. But still theres plenty of choice if you have a PC. You can play milions of games and some you don't even have to buy and are as great as games you have to pay the full price for. Modding communities and open source projects are huge, blizzard won't switch over to consoles any time soon and brings very... very good games. Even if PC gaming would be dead now i would still be playing PC games for years to come. I often still play games that came out in the 90's, becaus they are good. Tell me of 1 console game you still play after +-15 years. Well there are a couple, but thats just becaus the story is good and not the gameplay. To me PC gaming is about deep gameplay, games like Eve online, civilization, Railroad tycoon, capitalism, hearts of iron, warcraft 3, X-com 1 and 2, fallout series, jagged alliance, soccer managers, sims, MS flight simmulator, elder scrolls, baldurs gate. There is not 1 console game that can convince me to buy a console, well grant turismo and some FF titles almost..... (shhht) i might get a Wii soon, i love Wii fit :D. But take a game like gods of war, it scores a 9+.... but what is the game actually about? It's about entering button sequances apearing on the screen............. i rest my case... consoles suck.... and that just my opinion. Now this was just the gaming part.... For everyone that wants there games to be more beutifull a PC is a must have. Take GTA4, it looks awesome on consoles, but if you have the system, wich doesn't cost that mutch anymore if you can upgrade a couple of things, it looks even more awesome on a PC. The power of a updated PC is no match for any console. Yes PC's have a bug here and there, but a simple google and 99% of the time you will find a cure within a couple of minutes. PC gaming will just never die, as there will always be PC's. And why would developers banish the PC? Becaus of piracy? You can mod you console to play pirated games too. Maybe there is more money to get for a console developer there will still be people that like to make REALY good games with loads of options and depth and those games would never sell on a console... not even speaking of how to controll such games with a gamepad. Like i said, consoles die constantly..... PC gaming will never. Consoles are a commercial rip off from a PC, you can do anything/everything on a PC. But the only thing why consoles excist is becaus they can reach a bigger audiance more easy and thus make more money because they make it more expensive.

pc gaming will never die because of this reasons

- graphic card market

- game market

- gaming equipment

- FPS (mouse+keyboard) no gamepad can replace that ;)

- and much more

Will die? Real PC gaming is already dead and has been for at least five years. What you have now is a bunch of simplified console trash. So, yeah, stick a fork in it baby, 'cause it's done.

As long as there are PC's, PC gaming will live.

If anything new comes around that replaces PC's, then PC gaming will die by virtue of there not being PCs.

I'm thinking in the next few years. Consoles are much more mainstream, easily accessable, more money for developers and publishers due to a wider user base. Many games are now just console ports, which are just afterthoughts. It's getting more and more that way, though some of them are good (E.G Mass Effect, Jade Empire.)

PC WILL NEVER DIE LEARN THAT FREAKING CONSOLE FANBOYS! Plus you can hook up a $800 gaming rig to a 50 inch LCD or LED TV via DVI to HDMI or HDMI if the video card has a hdmi port. and you have a really wireless setup like a Logitech Wireless Wave Pro set. Plus Steam is just like the PSN with all the game downloads etc

The day I see the great majority of games being released for every platform EXCEPT for the PC, then I'll worry about the death of PC gamming.

I dont even care if all games released for the PC are ports, as long as they're good ports off course.

Really? This fall is one of the best ones considering RPGs in years. Dragon Age, Risen, Divinity 2, King's Bounty: AP (please release already  ) and if you consider genre hybrids (I do) Stalker CoP, Alpha Protocol and Borderlands.

Sure, you might not consider them as good as the old ones, but what really is these days? Not just talking about PC gaming, but console gaming is certainly not what it used to be either.

PC gaming is becoming weaker day by day . PC will never have good Exclusive it will get only Multiplatform Titles depends upon developers (Valve,Activision and capcom) some Russian developers are making PC games but mostly games are not good but they are atleast they are supporting PC.(Unlike MS,Japanase developers...... who will not support PC whatsoever) Intel,IBM............ are not taking steps to save PC.Thats the main problem MS,Sony and nintendo are doing everything to support their Console but Intel,IBM............ are sleeping.

Funny think because i thought pc had the most exclusives AAA and AA games this gen by far ( outnumbers PS3 and 360 combined) I also thought that upcoming battlefield 3, starcraft 2, diablo 3, total war napoleon, diablo 3, shattered horizon , command and conquer 4, elemental, guild war 2, star wars the old rebublic, Stalker call of pripyat , unknown ( guys that made penumbra games) and race on by sim racing experts call me simbin are all potential AA and AAA pc exclusives

So, is what's being debated hardcore vs. casual games? That's been done and done--and done. I used to love hardcore games, even if I wasn't ever the best gamer, but after needing to work 40+ hours a week with kids, the time one has to play complicated games dwindles. I'll give up on a game sometimes because the controls are so complex, I can't get a good feel for them after I come back to the game in a week. A constrant relearning process turns me off, so I just stay away from complicated games unless I have the time to play them.

I've always been a console gamer, but I switched to PC because the online gaming stays free (except for MMOs which I don't play) and they are modable and upgradable. Alot of the add-ons are free as well. Too much overlap between PC and Xbox as well. The only games I actually miss are PS3 exclusive, but I'm anti-Sony since Dreamcast died. So I've missed 2 Metal Gear Solids.

I wouldn't miss Gears of War 2 if it was never ported. Good, but nothing I absolutely miss. In fact, Uno Rush is the only game I miss on 360 that PC doesn't have already and I won't pay $60 a year for Uno.

Computer gaming will die once computers become obsolete, which is NEVER.

Ya i got into the 360 but played all the good games and now a days its 60 bucks for a 20-30 hour campaign and honestly they're just easy. Most decent pc games takes hundreds of hours to play. You get way more for you buck and can choose to do it in a hardcore or casual way.

PC gaming is weak and WILL become weaker. but never dies. because there are enough awesome exlusive old games form past to keep it up. there are still people who are interested in old games {like myself} and play them with PC.herzalot

Don't know if I can agree with that. That's like saying the Super Nintendo will never die because it has tons of great exclusive clas$ics.

I love PC gaming more than console. The only instance where console gaming is truely better, is for racing games, fighting games, and platformers. Other than that I'd stick to my PC anyday.

Gaming as a whole will eventually become obsolete and "die"... :?
