After playing Crysis 2's demo, I realized that my good old 2 buttons mouse ain't cutting it anymore. So without having to pay 150$, can someone recommend a good trusty mouse that would enhanced my gaming performance in FPS ? Thank you.

Hijacking this thread: looking for a ~60$(CAN) max usb mouse, best for my budget?MonsieurXI heard the Logitech MX518 is pretty good. It has quite an ugly appearance but I heard the performance is amazing. I am buying one soon. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104178

I hate my g500.
The scroll wheel is WAY to sensitive even in ratchet mode. Pressing the middle mouse button is a pain in the ass without scrolling forward or backward. In games it is obviously especially frustrating. In order for me to click it I have to curl the ventral side of my index finger over the wheel with my first knuckle directly in the center. That much caution should not be vested into button's press.
Rage.
I want to replace my G500 with the Steelseries Xai. Nothing but praise and positive reviews for that sucker.
If I went with any Logitech mouse it would probably be the MX518. I had an MX512 (same mouse; older optical sensor) and it was awesome for the 5 years that it lasted.
Personally I like the Logitech Performance Mouse MX. It isn't a true gaming mouse and it's pretty damn expensive (you can usually track one down on sale for ~$80, but regularly it's over $100), but it gets the job done (you can even set it up for DPI switching) and is much more user-friendly outside of games (very comfortable and intuitively-designed, doesn't look like something out of a Transformers promotional Happy Meal, wireless+rechargeable battery, and comes with Logitech's new toggle-able hyperfast scroll wheel).
I'm still rollin with my Logitech G5 from 2006 (1st Model). I hear the new models are pretty snazzy.
You're a brave man for only getting by with 1 thumb button. What the hell was Logitech thinking? That was a not a situation where less is better.I'm still rollin with my Logitech G5 from 2006 (1st Model). I hear the new models are pretty snazzy.

I would like the Steelseries Xai as well, or Cyborg RAT 7.I would like the Steelseries Xai as well, or Cyborg RAT 7.Elann2008I heard the RAT 7 uses the Philips twin-eye laser sensor that everyone hates so much. Hardcore gamers apparently won't go near mice with that laser.
Mmm looks like the MX518 is getting the majority vote, I'll go check it out tomorrow. Thanks peeps. Btw, how many buttons a good gaming mouse should have ?jack00
3 at minimum. The G500 (which i own btw) has something like 6 programmable, but really all i use is left, middle, right and then the speed adjusters, the side mounted ones aren't placed that comfortably, especially considering you have litterally 50 buttons or so on your left hand at all times :P

I almost bought it a few days ago haha. What is it exactly? And why the hate for it? Thanks in advance. Oh, and thank you for the warning.
Just make sure the wheel is not smooth. Some expensive mouse has smooth wheel, which is useless for gaming.magicalclickAhhh.. you bring up a great point. I'm so glad my Razer Copperhead doesn't have smooth wheel. It would be quite frustrating in games. :)

When lifing the mouse to reset it on the mousepad it can casue jutter or shift that can be quite annoying for certain gamers, especially fans of first person shooters.
Here's a thread at OCN that discusses it.

Oh dear gawd.. No thanks! I won't be buying the RAT 7 now.. Thanks Sunriser! I guess I have my heart set on the Steelseries Xai.Optical at this day and age, cmon! My last optical mice was 6 years ago, laser ever since the Razer Copperhead.
Personally I dont like g9 all too much, and I am putting this out since is recommended a lot. The mouse wheel is tiny along with a big butt towards the palm area.
Lachesis are really cheap right now, it was 80 at release and is now 40 for the original.
... Is the rat7 anygood? The design looks a bit ambitious, but somewhat impracticle or rather uncomfy.

Oh dear gawd.. No thanks! I won't be buying the RAT 7 now.. Thanks Sunriser! I guess I have my heart set on the Steelseries Xai. No prob, the only gripe I tend to see about the Xai is the side buttons because it's an ambidextrous mouse. Since I haven't used the mouse first hand I have no idea if this would be a gripe for me as well. What I'd probably end up doing is removing the right side thumb buttons (because I'm right handed and use the left side thumb buttons) and filling the holes where the buttons used to be with epoxy and sanding it down to seamlessly fit the shell of the mouse. Good quality products are sometimes worth such modifications. :P Then again those right-side thumb buttons might not be a problem.Optical mice still track better under heavy movement without positive or negative acceleration issues. Laser mice can be more precise with very minute movements, but anyone who games at a lower sensitivity (say around 1600DPI or less) won't need to worry about that. As for the issue at hand, the best mouse in the market isn't out in my opinion - at least not until we see th Puretrak Valor. No marketing BS specs, just the pure goodness promised with Omron D2FC-F-7N switches for all buttons, Avago ADNS-3090 optical sensor (capable of up to 3500DPI withoutinterpolation like a lot of recent optical mice, and even some laser ones), no angle snapping, lift-off-distance below 2mm, 1000Hz polling rate (although it does go to 500Hz which is honestly preferable), with a maximum acceleration rate of a whopping 20g. No crap that involves retarded manufacturer-specific acronyms or any other BS that Razer, Roccat, Logitech, Microsoft, or Mionix try to get you to buy into. Just pure tech specs, the way it should be.Optical at this day and age, cmon! My last optical mice was 6 years ago, laser ever since the Razer Copperhead.

Both of those use the Philips twin eye. Read above.
There is nothing wrong with optical mice. Most people don't need the tracking and DPI above what the MX518 has to offer.
A good quote from that OCN thread above, "[The Philips Twin Eye] exists because kids think they need 5600 DPI and the various mouse companies such as razer are happy to feed you ****ty high profit sensors with lots of DPI in $80+ mice."
He's right too.
Razer is the posterchild of gold plated turds. Their headsets are crap, their mice are mostly crap, and their keyboards are crap. They have the illusion of quality but are not. Just over priced average peripherals. (I'm probably going to get flamed for saying that.)
Logitech is not far behind, and Saitek is right there with them.
I read an interview with an engineer from Steelseries a while back that discussed why Steelseries doesn't use these "state of the art" 6000 dpi sensors. It's because they are unnecessary and, as you can see, sometimes of crap quality. They use what they know gamers want; stability and reliability.

Whilst I do find Razer very annoying and pretentious I think their mousepads and gaming mice are good. Their keyboards are over priced and average IMO.
Another vote for the Logitech MX518, I have had mine for about six months now, and I wonder how I got by without it... ChiliDragon

why don't you try the steelseries ikari?? i heard it's more suited for right handed users

I don't much care for the shape of the Ikari. It looks as if it would feel awkward, however, like the Xai I have not test driven either mice so I can't attest to the actual comfort. The Xai uses the form factor of the Microsoft intellimouse though. A shape I'm comfortable and familiar with.As for the issue at hand, the best mouse in the market isn't out in my opinion - at least not until we see th Puretrak Valor. No marketing BS specs,RayvinAzn
Mind buying it first day and giving a review here? Im tired of my mouses, is about time for a new one, I just simply dislike the ergo of my current mouse.
I plan on purchasing it shortly after it's out. I need to see the final shape of it first, before committing to it: the best sensor and switches in the world won't make a great mouse if my hand cramps up after ten minutes of using it. It's supposed to be a shorter palm-grip style mouse - I generally fingertip grip, but I can deal with it on a shorter mouse. Puretrak did say they were going to put out a more claw/fingertip oriented mouse depending on how well the Valor does. As long as the shape of the mouse seems reasonably comfortable, I'll probably have one within a few weeks of launch.Mind buying it first day and giving a review here? Do you guys use the side buttons of the mouse as melee ? Or just what command do you asign on them ? Like I said I'm playing crysis 2 and it's the first game I really feel like I can't handle all the command on my left hand on the keyboard. I have to stretch my fingers way too much to press "v" for melee and "g" for i don't remember what...jack00
I use the side button of my G9 as middle mouse (both of them, i whould set the top one to another button). probably one of the main reasons i have to many melee kills in bc2 lol
makes switching suit modes in crysis easy too, i never used suit shortcuts

It depends on the game I guess. I usually use page back for voice communications like in Valve games. Mouse buttons never go unmapped on my mice.
Is 56.78$ CAN a good price for the MX518 ? It's the best price I could find for it.
Also it says it's 1800 dpi on their site but on this one, http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=12660ID6649&vpn=931352-0215&manufacture=LOGITECH
It says it's only 1600 :s

Newegg has it for 44.99. Try pricematching to NCIX though, as the shipping is quite steep there.
