Q4 2011 I think is what it said. Socket 2011, up to 135W TDP.

I'm glad I waited. Looks like I'll be replacing my Q9550 soon with the $215 i5-2500k that performs as good as, if not better than, the $999 i7-980x.

They look pretty good, but I don't think they will mean much to anyone on a Phenom II X4, C2Q, i5 or i7. It will be a few years till a gaming computer requires that much power.

Byebye Phenom II.

This CPU looks great!

It looks to me like AMD can now only compete on low-end CPU's due to Intel completely locking their low-end sandy bridges.

This is bit-tech's conclusiopn of the i5-2500K:

"The Sandy Bridge lineup gives us some of the easiest conclusions to write that we've ever come across: the new range of Intel CPUs renders almost every other processor redundant and pointless. Only if you need incredible performance in multi-threaded applications should you look beyond the Core i5-2500K for your next CPU."

Not true... Look at the benchmarks, core 2 quads are out dated for fast pcs. My qx6700 @ 3.4ghz is bottlenecking my 2xGTX 460s by quite a bit.

Living in Europe (Belgium), to me the decision will be greatly influenced by what will be charged in Euro for either of those CPUs...

Why are you such an intel fanboy? AMD has to release its new line of cpu's yet. But i mean christ both companies just want as much of your money as they can get no need to doggedly support either of them their just a heartless faceless corporation.

AMD cannot compete with Sandybridge(atleast I tink), especially Sandybridge for notebooks, check anandtech there as well. I am not sure what AMD is going to do...

Oh well, I'm very happy with my C2Q, and I'm glad I chose it over new mobo, RAM and i5 and saved some money. Looking through benchmarks, my CPU seems to keep up with i5's pretty easily.

Calm down dude, its only a faceless company. AMD was already operating a generation behind Intel, now they are 2 generations behind, they just need to hurry up and get their new stuff out there. Please dont get me wrong, I would be MOOOORE than happy using a Phenom II X4 for gaming, but in this HIGHLY competitive environment AMD cant just keep reducing prices in order to keep themselves relevant.

Well, I'll no longer be recommending Phenom II X4s for budget builds. I'll be recommending these Sandy Bridge chips.

Yeah, not that AMD don't do good things, but C2's are better than Phenom II's, and Intel is about to enter into its 2nd line of CPU's since the C2's.

for gaming you are just throwing money down the drain if you have any half modern quad core. 80 -90 fps or 100-120fps is sooooo noticeable. Even crysis doesn't really benifit from new cpus. There are only a couple of game out there that can actually use modern cpus fully. Sure for rendering they make it faster but most people wont notice any difference. Till some game that are actually made for pc rather than being console ports come out there is little point in upgrading if you have a system from 2-3 or less years ago.

I'll still be recommending it till I completely see the prices.. Right now, I won't be reommending first gen i5's and i7's anymore... Phenoms still gonna have their place for ultra cost effective mobo cpu combos. Don't expect intel and partners to have cheap motherboards on release... Still have a good 6-8 months from release before we get good prices for everything. For top end, def these chips are gonna be worth it.

If anything, can you say 100 dollar phenom iix4 945/955's and 60-80 dollar mobo's? OH man... price of building good rigs bout to be even more awesome.

I'm still finding it hard to believe that the i3 is just a tiny bit behind the x4 965 and the 970. Wonder what the price of those will be.

I have a Q6600. This is very, very tempting. Frankly, i didnt care for its performance as much as UEFI and lower power consumption.

I was at Newegg the other day and saw a build with an i7 and a gtx 470, everything but OS and peripherals for around $1,300.00 and thought two things at once. Buy it then no wait. There is something wonderful (2010 reference) comming. Sign me up.

The initial motherboards are still going to cost an arm! @.@ at least the decent ones. The C2Q benched very low, because of the low initial clocks. Overclock them and they will be closer for games especially those are less cpu intensive unlike the ones compared here. Of course each newer cpus are made to run synthethic benchmarks a lot better than the predecessors, so I dont think the gap is as huge its made to be.

They still look very good, just not as groundbreaking like the jump from pentium D > Core2. Although I am considering the jump, but I just dont think Im ready to commit $400 just yet. Theres also the mainstream 6/8 cores coming up at Q3 this year!

first of all those benchmarks are misleading. They do the reviews at 1024*800. Sure the cpu may be powerful at that resolution but if you crank up the resolution the benchmarks will be ALOT closer for all cpu's, even the ones that are 2 generations old. For gamers who have high end video cards, the cpu won't matter at higher resolutions.

Like Daytona says, the up-scale Sandy Bridge CPU's are going to be released come Fall 2011, so better wait. That is, judging by what we've seen so far from the low- to midrange sandy processor...

You should be more than fine for a couple of years. Consoles are slowing down PC's graphics progression enough. You may run into odd games here and there that push the limits of PC hardware though.

It's going to be hard waiting until Fall for the enthusiast version. My 980X will have to hold be over until then.
