Hey Guys,

I just got a sexy new iMac (see specs below) and have been out of the loop on PC games for the last 5 years or so as I've been mostly playing console games. I remember playing Duke Nukem 3D on the PC and really liking the user created maps where you could walk around places like Disneyland and such. Does anyone know of any great games now that have a lot of user created content? (besides Oblivion, which I already own). Thanks!

24-inch iMac (3.06 ghz, 4 GB ram, 1 TB Hard drive, nVidia 8800 GS, Mac OSX, Windows XP and Windows Vista 64-bit)

Nice for an IMAC, I bet that cost you a bombshell :P

Are you using WINE? otherwise the games available to you are still pretty limited. Seeing as alot dont support MAC.

Shows what you know Lepper. Actually, Macs are the most powerful computers. They have much more power then Windows based PC's and that is why they are used in the graphics industry. They are also used in marketing departments that create circulars and other graphical media. And before you bash me I am a PC user not a Mac user and have been in the computer industry for over 25 years. It is known through out the computer field that macs are more powerful then PC's and always have been. The only reason PC's ever even survived is because Bill Gates ripped off the Mac operating system and there has always been more software support for PC's then Mac's. When you think about it as gamers it is sad we are not all on Mac's as our games would probably be much more advanced then they are now.

Yes let's not go down the Mac vs. PC road but Macs (especially mine) are undeniably beautiful to look at and use. I dropped about $2,700 on it but it was worth it to get a free iTouch. I am using Bootcamp for Windows games so there really isn't much difference between my computer and a regular PC as far as gaming goes. I'm not an intense gamer but would love to pick up a good FPS with a lot of user-created content like maps, etc.

Macs are not more powerful, they have the same hardware, shows what you know, and the kicker is you can get a PC as powerful for less. Macs are proprietary, and MAC os stoles from OS's before it, that is the OS industry and irrelevant. Saying macs are more powerful is the rambling of a mac fanatic. How are they? They sue the same GPU's and CPU's? If M

Actually hes somewhat correct, the way the OS uses RAM for example is abit more efficient.

I still do all my graphics design, video design, games design on windows, even though our UNI uses macs, simple because Ive grown up with windows, and I like the OS better ( beyond the flash ) and I like custimizing my machichine.

Back on topic, Massive back catelog bigger than any singular console, we cant really point it out to you, because youve got everything open to you, look at the lists, most shooters have mod support like DUKE NUKEM did, there are litterally thousands of mods out there across many genres.

The Half Life Games especially, download STEAM, a digital download software ( Required for all HAlf Life and similar games) and you get your own profile ect much like XBOX LIVE. though its only for windows, so use bootcamp. SOURCE games ( HAlf-LIFE 2 and ORange Box ect" have the biggest communitys and modders.

and Really why buy a mac for gameing? its not worth it its like spending 2700$ on a consle when a Pc can cost around 785$ but also can be upgraded so you don't have to throw away your PC when the graphics card is outdated and such.

Also Mac gameing is very bare at the moment theirs not many supporting the system and you will have to use Bootcamp with windows to play anything else.

I didn't buy a Mac for gaming, I bought a Mac for it's multimedia capabilities and for my wife's graduate school work. But I'd like to use it for the games that are better on the PC than the PS3.

Good Choice, this is not my typical biased response, but all VALVE games are so much better on the PC, in performance, Community, online gaming, mods.

Yes I love the new Mac. I was never a fan of Mac and Apple in general last time I bought a PC in 2000 but they have really improved the operating system and the way everything functions so well together is just awesome. I have a little clicker if I just want to watch podcasts or listen to music - I don't even have to touch the keyboard. Now that's easy.

Now it's time to buy some video games. I was thinking Orange Box, Elder Scrolls Oblivion and possibly Crysis or the Witcher?

LOL, the old insult the other poster because you have no leg to stand on and try and change the subject. Other then saying I am uninformed, you never made one good point. i have worked on MACS, Unix, Linux, AS400, Windows for years (Gaming since Dos games in the 80's, kings quest, Space quest, Quest for glory), try and not be so ignorant. The only uninformed post is the mac fanatic spreading his MAC propaganda.

$2700 is a MAJOR rip-off, you could build 3 windows PC's of the same specs for that price and the ability to upgrade and have more compatibility and choice. Hell, for that much you could build a Pc with 2 GTX 280's, 1 terabyte of HD space, and still have money left.

Perhaps from your point of view. Quite clearly the OP attaches a significantly different value to things like the OS. Personally I'd find paying for 2 GTX 280's to be a huge rip-off, due to the low performance/price ratio there. Different strokes for different folks, as they say...

True, he could've built or bought two systems for what he paid for his iMac, but there are also high end PC/Windows gamer systems from Alienware and others that cost much more ($5,000- $12,000), so it depends on what you want and what you are willing to spend. I have a Powerbook G4 that I use for creative work, but it plays the few games that matter to me on the Mac Platform, and plays them to my satisfaction. I mostly game on my Vista PC because of Orange Box, Crysis, F.E.A.R and racing games that are only for the PC. Either way, I'm having fun gaming. Will others agree with that approach? Maybe so. Maybe not. That isn't what matters. What matters is having fun my way. He's doing his thing his way.

Why are people so fixated on the price? It's not as overpriced as you may think, anyways. Don't forget it comes with a drool-worthy 24" uber-flatscreen monitor with a built in webcam, and a huge software suite.

The amount of software that works and comes with MAC still pales in comparison to Windows, and even with those features that price is assinine, that is one of the reasons macs are a niche, very small market.

Incorrect. Mac users now have access to MORE software than Windows users, because Mac users can double dip Mac-Specific and Windows-Specific software. Saying macs are only for a niche market is also off base, because Mac sales are growing faster than PC sales in the consumer market. Those are old arguments.

It's not your fault. Flame wars are inevitable here

I would definatly get the orange box. All of those games have a dedicated community.

I would also get the original half life. (not halflife source) It has one of the most extensive mod community i have seen. Great mods for half life include Sven Co op and Natural Selection.

Runs just fine for me on Vista. :)

The only problem is that the resolution options are limited..if you're on a large widescreen you might want to play in windowed mode.

What the HELL is the matter with some people?! MrUnSavory1 and leper-messiahs don't either of you have any manners whatsoever?! Someone bought a new cool computer and is looking for advice on games and the two of you turn the thread into a poo flinging match and a 'mine is bigger than yours' argument that would have seemed embarrasing and imature in a kinder garden.

So you have diffrences of oppinion regarding Mac's and PC's why the hell are you spitting you venom in someone elses thread? Take it to the 'system wars' forums and join the 'My PS3 is better than your X360' threads. They should provide a perfect backdrop for your continued 'debate'.

@the OP

Grats on the new machine :)

As for games (shooters specifically) as someone mentioned,The Orange Box have a crazy number of mods and variances. Aside from H2 I know someone has been working on some pretty cool looking crysis mods (Mechwarrior based mod for example).

$2700 is quite a lot for a computer with 8800 GS.

But anyway, Morrowind and Half-Life 2 (and Counter-Strike: Source) have tons of user created content.

When you think about it as gamers it is sad we are not all on Mac's as our games would probably be much more advanced then they are now.MrUnSavory1

Really? Macs are built from the same off the shelf parts as PCs. They contain Intel processors, motherboards designed by Intel, graphics chipsets by either Intel, ATi, or NVIDIA, hard drives by Western Digital, etc, etc. The only difference is that PCs ship with Linux or Windows, while Macs have Mac OS X.

The graphics industry only use Macs because they are elegant to look at, which reflect the values of the artists that work for such companies. It's really more of a political thing that they use Macs instead of PCs in their work.

Please stop spewing out uninformed nonsense. For a person who claims to have "been in the computer industry for 25 years", this is seriously misinformed and misleading.

Leper sir, you deserve a hi five. Unsavory should go back unto the bridge to terrorise the billy goat. And @ OP, I know you said you only game on windows and do everything else on the mac OS. But is an OS really worth like $1000?

On topic I'd suggest going back a few years and replying some of the great games. Such as SS2/Escape from butcher bay/Deus Ex then theres the new games such as crysis/orange box/css/oblivion it really depends on what type of games you into

pcs are more powerful than macs.period. HOWEVER apple only has to optimize the OS for a FEW sets of predetermined hardware where as micro$oft has to optimize for hundreds of thousands of different combinations. but what amazes me is that macs still have a few major bugs in them. and mac fanboys dont give me the blue screen crap. most blue screens are caused by faulty graphic drivers from a certain company *cough* nvidia *cough*. i think the apple devs are being lazy and not optimizing as well as they can seeing as how apple computers perform similarly to windows computers with the same specs. and 2700 bucks for that kind of hardware is not something i would reccomend(unless you HAVE TO HAVE the best photoshop performance because adobe

That's a monster. Well done, sir.

I disagree, sir.

that's a great computer, but I want to point out 2 things.

1. I completely disagree with you musicalmac, beacuse first off, you name has mac in it. =] and second off, while being a great computer he could have EASILY gotten the same computer for $1000 less somewhere else.

2. For the TC, when buying games, make sure they support the 8800gs, I know quite a few good games that don't
