The sales figures of Skyrim already hit 7million, and the numbers don't include Steam (the fact is Steam controls over 70% of the digital market). Actually, when you play this game for a relatively long time, you even can not tell a difference between real world and virtual world. Why it can dominate our gaming time? My opinions:

1. Vastly splendid gaming world (maybe)

I began to play the game when it was released, now I already touched more than half of the Skyrim territory. I found more than 100 places, and kinds of dungeons are worth discovering (my opinion). The fun I can get from it is climb mountains, destroy fortresses and crossing oceans, etc. Every exquisite vast world scene created by Bethesda undoubtedly amazed me, and made me get lost. The virtual world is not simply displayed by a dumb map, people can find some quests attractive in every village, city or dungeon, and every quest is capable of leading gamers to a unique place. I think that's why it can easily succeed worldwide.

2. Unprecedented game freedom (yes)

I guess many gamers already killed dragons, invaded cities, murdered kings, and some even remarried. Farmer, fisherman, blacksmith, etc, I got a bunch of jobs to make a living in the game. Maybe some people hate this kind of stuff, they feel bored, but everything has two sides. If you don't want to become The One, you have no interest on saving the world, it's fine, you can just buy a house and store lots of books, why not? The game freedom of Skyrim offers you freedom to decide "who you want to be" and "what you want to do", after all, saving the world can be boring too.

3. Impressive graphics (even for lowest settings)

We can see countless landscapes and crafted dungeons in Skyrim. The graphic engine of Skyrim maybe a bit outdated, but it doesn't let me down. It can perform well on some low-setting rigs. In 10 minutes, people can see varioius forests, rivers, plains and high mountains. Although it is "only" 5g-sized, but I don't think another 70g one can outperform it all-round.

4. Diversified game quests(true for me)

Similar to previous Scorlls, there is a conventional plot throughout Skyrim, accompanied with some guild quests and side quests. But one diffenrence is, Skyrim has so many side quests that we have to spend more time on a main city. Actually, I spent 9 hours on side quests for the first village (a bit insane). Generally, you will get bored when you stuck by side quest, but Skyrim didn't fail me, every quest has its own features, abundant details and twisting plot just make me addictive. On top of that, endless mods are awaiting.:)

Yours?

Didn't find it that impressive. It's like Oblivion but with a much better presentation. Ultimately, I found the combat to be shallow and the dungeon crawling was a little stale. On top of it all, the graphics could use much improvement. The environments in some areas are incredibly lacking in detail (and are painted with very low resolution textures). Another thing - I miss the athletics and acrobatics skills. I don't like the idea of everyone running at the same speed and everyone jumping at the same height.

I found it death boring, such terrible and "boring" voice acting. A friend was playing it and I literally fell asleep after 1 hour, the world was nice, dragons too, but when bored people, record boring voices, for bored NPCs that send you on boring quests...it makes a boring and monotonous "journey".

I had more than enough Skyrim just from the "what have you been playing" thread.

I just love how they give you an open world to go nuts in just like Oblivion...but this time, there's actually stuff to do in said open world! :D (finally, a reason to hold onto those wolf pelts other than selling for peanuts :P).

I still don't see the appeal of those games, they're just too boring for me. The environments are beautiful, soundtracks are great but the gameplay (imo of course) is just stupid. The fighting mechanics although improved over Oblivion's is still crap, a similar game would be TW2, everything is great except the most important thing which is the actual gameplay.

TW2 is nothing like TES, that's quite a bad comparison. And in terms of gameplay what mechanics are you talking about? combat? combat could be better but it's pretty good for a action-rpg. For instant gratification though obviously The Elder Scrolls is not something you play. TES is about immersion and imitating real life in a fantasy setting. it's a roleplaying game, you're supposed to kick back and relax and play the game. And there is quite a bit of depth in Skyrim but you have to look for it, the game won't hand you enjoyment on a platter like most.

Mount and Blade

Mount and Blade is inferior to Skyrim on so many levels. Should the next GTA have driving mechanics on the level of Gran Turismo and shooting mechanics equal to Gears of War? Games like Skyrim and GTA are about the sum of their parts, they arent one trick ponies like Mount and Blade.

So Gothic 2 was a one trick pony? no wonder similar games don't come close to it, it did that "one" trick so well.

My Steam profile says I played a total of 125 hours.

I'm also pursuing a Masters degree at the moment and it can be crazy juggling school work and Skyrim, especially in November.

This, equals winning formula. :D I am also pursuing a Bachelor's degree, working full-time, and playing errmm Skyrim.. not as much as I would like but I have maybe 30-40 hours clocked in. I've played several hours using the .exe file because certain things wouldn't save from the ini file and Steam didn't log in those hours. So I went back to clicking "play" launching from steam again. I'm really OCD about how many hours I've played.. all thanks to Steam. :P

Are you saying Gothic has great combat? Gothic 1 and 2 are among my favs. I played Oblivion with the timed block mod so it played more like Gothic but I wouldnt say Gothic has combat on the level of a pure action game. Overall Gothic 1 and 2 are equal to Morrowind and modded Oblivion. I dont play sp games that arent fully patched so I havent played Skyrim yet. I'd rather play a wintery game in the summer anyway. All the critics and most user scores would disagree with you on Skyrim. In fact Skyrim is currently the number 1 highest rated pc game of all time. Orange box is technically number 1 bit that doesnt count.

The main storyling is too short, and the ending was anti climactic. But gr8 game overall, but I feel oblivion had a more climactic ending than Skyrim, albeit Oblivion's ending could have been a lot better if u cud fite.

Can't, game's too boring. It's an RPG, you "need" to do "some" quests and they are ruined by default by dull voices. When in an RPG you don't have, quests and decent combat, you have nothing, the next is based on opinion, I'm not interested in the TES lore or story, take all that out, you are left with nothing, but the world, which doesn't make any game.

At first, in the intro, that I watched on youtube, it seemed like they actually cared about voice acting, but after that preview of a lvl 30 player, I don't want to have anything to do with the game -not that I ever wanted to- (what's worse is that most of what he played was tied exactly to that viking or w/e at the start of the game, they really made it start strong, to impress people, then filled the rest how they could since "nobody checks anyway"), it's already almost too much to see it in almost every post in the "what have you been playing" thread. I'm not about to make a worse purchase than Battlefield 3 this year.

they're not. the voice acting is good; and miles better than in oblivion.

DanielDust

there is an absolute mountain of quests which are a lot more substantial than oblivion's fetch and return type quests and the combat is decent. not great but definitely decent enough. it's not the most accomplished rpg, but it's a great all round package.

i'm not trying to change your opinion of the game, if it's not your cup of tea then fine no problem. i just find it curious you seem to have so much contempt for a game you haven't played. better to base your opinions on facts and experience rather than guess work

ShimmerMan

Nothing like Oblivion? It uses the same gameplay style on the same game engine, even some of the character animations and sound effects are exactly the same as in Oblivion, like they where just ripped straight out of that game and used again in this one. The game is Oblivion with a bit more polish, a different land to explore, lower FOV and an even crapper UI than Oblivion had.

Yeah it's extremely addictive. I'm at 60 hours playtime now, and i'v only done one main quest. Just walking around doing side quest, smithing, raiding forts and dungeons, enjoying the scenery and talking to people is just to much fun, and i want to save the main story for later :). And honestly, it's one of the best games i have ever played on the pc. And i'v been playing games now for over 25 years :P It's good times indeed!

[QUOTE="Cranler"] What games combat should the next Elder Scrolls aspire to?

It probably won't fit the style of the game but I really like how the combat system works in games like Monster Hunter & Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, the combat feels very satisfying and fun, it also takes skill and is very challenging, Don't get me wrong, I think Skyrim is a great game(excluding the unlimited bugs and combat system) but I just don't enjoy some aspects of the game.

It's definitely a great game, and for people that love open world games I can easily see it being the best game of 2011.

For me personally I am also really enjoying the game, but there is too much "open world jank" going on to make it the best game of the year for me. Too many badly scripted sequences that hitch up because of the game mechanics going on the fritz. Too many small bugs that niggle and annoy me.

Oh, and also a larger bug where the Destruction magic trainer is apparently dead in my game now, so I can't train master level Destruction spells.

And the combat feels a bit off. Melee combat is rather floaty and as a full on mage I have to do a lot of kiting people around tables or let my pets/companions do most of the fighting.

It's a great accomplishments and I appriciate that a lot of people are more than happy to look past its issues because it offers so much, but in the end I'd rather have something more linear and tight that presents me with a more polished experience.

Might be something good if you look hard enough, but I have no free time or desire for Skyrim even if I have all the time in the world for another 6 months or so, there are just way too many games that offer more than an open world to explore. I'll probably get a GOTY once it's on sale a few years from now at an extremely low price (like I did with Oblivion a few years ago), but I never was a TES fan (enjoyed Morrowind for about 20 hours, but that was about it and for me Oblivion is a pathetic joke, the worst game in this genre that I ever played), it offers absolutely nothing that I want, no game since Gothic 2 did, the AC 2 series is the closest thing I enjoy to an open world game that's about swords and such. I can get over a lot of things, but not the terrible voice acting and combat.

I absolutely hate this type of combat system, I even hated Witcher 2 which is a fantastic game till 2.0 when they made combat better, as for voice acting, it's like they let kids record lines, kids that have to read an essay in front of the ****and they have no idea how to read it properly, I saw this for a major character in the game and there was a lot of dialogue from him, from several quests, if it's this bad for such a character I don't believe anyone saying it's fine.

Sure, there are mods, but that's another problem, I don't like them, I love finding, downloading, installing and editing mods, but after that, I have no desire to play the game (any modded game, be it the GTAs, any TES, etc), I always prefer to play the original game. It's just not a game I can play or enjoy, I missed games that I was actually interested in, games that I have no desire anymore to purchase, like Brink, Rage, which failed anyway, at least Brink since it's mostly a multiplayer game and it's dead.

Its Oblivion v2.0 While it do improve by handcrafting things instead of copying everything. It still have alot of flaws.

Hehe. Well i didn't really know that the LARP community had a impact on the gaming industry. I mean, how many larpers are there? Now hikers however!

Well, I'm neither a larper or an avid hiker. But i still looove the game, and my favourite RPGs is Planescape Torment and the old Temple of Elemetal Evil pen and dice games. I guess I'm not the picky one, dunno...anyways, I've got some smithing to be done! Laters :)

[QUOTE="rhazzy"]As ived been seen in ur post lately,we both dont like pretty much the same games...BUT let me assure you that Skyrim is one of the best games out this year...and i think is one of the best(not the best) RPG's on the market right now...

You should give it a try and play it with and open mind :D...I agree with you that voice acting is somehow boring....but dude...the game atmosphere sucks you in...Its a blast to discover new location...the exploring is awesome...the story is somehow better than Oblivion...and the visuals are sometimes breath taking...the game is good, really good!

If we will try to dissect it ofc we gonna find that is has a lot of problems...but those problems can be overlooked...Try the game and you wont be disappointedDanielDust

Why are you even posting your biased opinion in a Skyrim thread if you've never even played the game? Theres just absolutely no pleasing some people..... Ive clocked over 100hrs into skyrim. I cant say that about many games Ive owned. It is quite amazing.

Thats cool. You can enjoy traditional RPGs and action ones like Skyrim also. To me, I could possibly find some entertainment value in these games if the actual action (combat) was engaging. But unfortunately, It's very non reactive and feels extremly static. I like the freedom they have, and exploration of the pretty open worlds, but imo, that's the only redeeming quality in these new Beth games. All the other 'RPG' aspects are sub par, from the writing (characters/dialog/quests/voice acting) to the gameplay (combat) to the 'RPG' mechanics, to the choices and consequences which actually have impact the game and world.

Why? because it's not exclusively about Skyrim, it's also not a "let's praise Skyrim", or maybe you didn't even read the title or OP?

I usually do not chime in my very vocal opinion after watching demos and trailers on youtube.

Neither do I. I do it by watching friends play and asking them if it's any good, if I see some potential, not the case.

[QUOTE="Cranler"] What games combat should the next Elder Scrolls aspire to?Cranler

You asked about combat. What games combat should the Elder Scrolls aspire to? Mount and Blade. It has far superior combat mechanics to Skyrim. I'm not saying the entire game should be like it but combat is definitely more fun.

I would find a game boring too if i just watch friends play. To me you don't have enough of an experience with the game to have a valid point
