So whats windows 7 like atm?

Hey guys

So im pretty bored of xp and was wondering what windows 7 is like for gaming nowadays? I know it isnt the fat greedy hog that vista was but how does it compare to Xp for performace in games and compatability?

For me it's been great so far. I remember with Vista I had a lot of compatibility and crash problems. But, with Windows 7 it's almost non-existent. So far it's good. :)

Works fine only problem is i cant get halo 2 to work on 64 bit ahh

people seem to like it... In my experience I much prefer vista with a few features turned off. Windows 7 gave me several driver issues with my sound card, video card, usb drives etc... It might be better later on.

Framerates though not as high as xp were pretty damn close but then left 4 dead 2 started to get choppy after an hour or so of play, and red faction guerilla played too fast so I've gone back to xp64 for now. Windows 7 is now on the family computer which doesn't like it, explorer will randomly crash.

So, that's my experience. Should you upgrade? Yes, but not yet.

gta 4 works flawlessly for the first time ever. zero problems.

im using 64bit, and i think you should really upgrade. people moan about microsoft, but imo this time they got just right.

i went from xp to 7, and while i havent done any frame rate checks, nothing has worked noticably worse. it could be way better for all i know. either way, for me the difference is negligible

I have actually had more compatibility issues with Windows 7 than with Vista and I used Vista for a long time. Vista was good to me but people will convince themselves of whatever they want based on what they hear. Windows 7 does have it's upsides like Trim support, takes up less drive space, and superfetch is a little more efficient. I also love aero peek.

yup sounds about right, but dude vista 64 is the way to go. Just disable sidebar and a few other things and you're all set, im not even joking, vista 64 is the best overall version of windows right now.TerroRizing

I love xp64, best OS I've ever used, totally stable. I was an early adopter of vista, I think that's where I went wrong :D That buggy pile of socks isn't coming near my rig ever again! I'll take your word for it that it's great now but I'm not buying another OS just yet. Directx 10 isn't worth the upgrade at all and that's really the only improvement I'd be interested in.

Its been nothing but Perfect for me so far. no problems running any games, even older ones. Vista was just so annoying at times it made you want to pull your hair out, but Windows 7 seems to have addressed all those vista problems. I can highly reccomend it without thinking twice about it. It actually works, and the navigation and interface is fantastic.

And despite what some may say. it does not bog down your system badly. Everything runs great with no problems.

I've been using Win7 Ultimate x64 and I've had no issues really. And although Win7 is more forgiving than Vista on system requirements, you will want a dual core and a few gigs of ram (more than 1, at least) to really have an optimal experience.

I jumped from xp to win7(64) and saw a huge jump in performance...from startup times to gaming and multi tasking. Older games require abit of tweaking to get them to work without font/gfx glitches but there'z the internet to help with slight compatibility problems. Other than that....win7 is the OS to give up XP for.ACEHERO

I like it a lot, haven't had any problems yet.

Windows 7 is awesome, so much better then that horrible vista.

Ive tried about 70 games on windows7 and only one doesnt run well (Arax Fatalis). Everything else ran well.

For me it goes WINDOWS7 >>> XP >> Vista

XP was fantastic and I went back to it after a few months on Vista, now im on Windows 7 and very ahppy with it.

WIndows 7 is like a nicely tweaked Vista. Anyone who tells you different hasn't used either operating system for any real amount of time, or has no idea about either. Compatibility is pretty much the same. Games that worked for me on Vista work just as well on Windows 7. Any issues I've had I've had on both OSes, and the fix for 1 worked on the other too. I'm not going to compare Windows Vista or 7 to XP as I beleive both to be very superiour to XP and I have no idea why anyone with a modern computer would use XP at all. I'm not intersted in starting a flame way here I just don't understand the hype for XP at all.CellAnimation

Try Gothic 1 or 2 or Messiah with a Nvidia card. Try CoH, BF2, and a couple of more if you have a 59hz display. Try Qrack. There are a few games that dont run as well if at all under Windows 7 that worked fine in Vista.

Saying that Windows 7 is a tweaked Vista is putting it pretty mildly. There are some significant differences like WDDM 1.1, the way that memory is addressed, DX11 support, SSD support, and there is more.

Windows 7 is great and it works well with games, but I haven't experienced a colossal difference from Vista apart from some UI changes that I like. I wouldn't have gotten it yet had the student deal not expired. At least my hard drive is clean again, though.

for the gaming purpose, nothing special. because no game requires dx11 yet. rather, I can't play dos games that i could play on XP.

I know its just holds your applications and games but seeing as i've had it since release im up for a change, you know having it for nearly a decade can make it seem a tad bland. The newer Os's are also designed to work effectively with my current hardware where as XP was not. Sometimes people DO like trying alternatives.

I love it! My favorite OS from MS yet! It feels like a good mix of Vista and XP. I really enjoyed Vista after some tweaks but it doesn't compare to this :D

While I have just been too lazy to install windows 7 (I got it free from my dads work)I do want to know if it works good with Starcraft. Dont' want to upgrade to find my main game isn't working :P

I went from XP to Win7, and I like it a lot. I haven't had any issues with the OS itself - less than XP, in fact. Windows 7 is a really smart OS that seems to be highly efficient and very easy to use (which is the whole point of an OS). I can't really comment on game compatibility, since I've only played newer stuff since I installed 7, but I haven't had any performance issues with anything so far. My system's no slouch though, so if there are any performance issues with 7, I might not be noticing them.

In any event, I definitely recommend Windows 7. I've actually enjoyed using it quite a bit. The change from XP is great, especially in the usability department. And the best part is I can finally randomize my wallpaper without having to use a third-party app! :lol:

skrat i have a similar setup to you, are you using the 64-bit version?. If so whats the core 2 quad like with it, is there a performance improvement?

It's awesome. I have 2 gigs of RAM and a Q6600 and it runs like a dream. I do have to give it a minute after startup to start working truly flawlessly (perhaps that's due to me having MemTurbo clean my RAM upon startup), but after that - it works like a charm and is much faster than Vista. In games, however, I don't see a performance difference between the two.

I switched to XP from Windows 2000 when I started gaming and didn't really like the interface as much, then I got Vista on the day it came out and it took a long time for MS, hardware vendors and game devsto work out the bugs on it, so it sucked for a long time, but it eventually got to be pretty close to as good for gaming as XP, Then I got Win 7 x64 and was really impressed with how well it runs even when its compared to vista with its second SP, but it still doesn't play quite as nicely as XP, I think because it run on the same basic infrastructure as Vista does, and there have been way less problems from the start because everyone is used to the platform now. I couldn't and wouldn't want to go back to XP, it was just so clunky and ugly, and XP x64 was horrible btw, they hadvery little harwaredriver support byjust about everyone. So short answer is: Yes it is worth it, even though you take a small performance hit compared to XP.

Edit: Also keep in mind that a lot of people who bash Windows Vist and 7 used it very early on, during the time when the industry is still adjusting towhichever new platform is current, and when they experienced any problem that was something they had never seen on XP they got scared and went back, and being so traumatized by the experienc they tell everyone they see how bad it is even years later when all those bugs are worked out.
