It does feel a little strange playing as a female character. That's why I always choose male.

So I'm not the only one? That's good to know. I prefer playing a male character, especially in RPGs where I can make my character resemble me.

I play as males, but I see why most guys play as woman.

If you are ganna stare at a screen for hundreds of hours do you want to look at a womans ass or mans ass.

I choose male mainly for a little role play. I cant pretend to be a girl...thats just wierd.

I usually play as a male coz I feel ore immersed that way. But many of my friends usually play as females...coz they are nicer to look at :) Plus some of them usually try to make the chars look like their gfs or wives.

With RPGs that give you the option to choose, then I normally use a male for my first playthrough and then a female.

I don't personalize the characters in a game, so if I choose a male then I feel like I'm staring at a steriod-ridden weightlifting douchebag the entire time. Hence I go for chicks.

the way I see it is, if I am going to be staring at a person's backside (if its third person) or something, it might as well be a woman's backside.

Also, have you seen a female character dressed up in assassin garb with two daggers equipped? Freaking sexy!

When I have a choice, I always choose female. You see, one of my "gaming philosophy" is: "When kicking ass, make sure to look good doing it." And no, I don't feel weird at all. It's a game, after all.

In Guild Wars, like 6 out of 8 of my characters are women.

doesn't bother me in the least....only my Assassin and Paragon are male.

My fav character is my first....a female Mesmer. She's a Goddess!

It's a game. Do what you want. Now, if you start going out and about in drag ... then maybe you have a problem. Back when I played WoW, 1 of 3 characters was a female, although it was my main. I have to agree with what is the common response here. If you're gonna spend a lot of time looking at the same character, make sure they are enjoyable to look at.

Sometimes I'd rather look at a female avatar for the 50+ hours of a RPG than a male. But then again for some games that involve sex I'd rather be a dude, cause it doesn't feel right the other way around. So I play as a male most of the time but I don't mind being a female character every so often.

I've got no problem with playing as a female character - if you're basically going to be playing dress-up with a character for the next 50 hours, you might as well make it interesting.

If games make a big deal out of your sex, then I'll usually play it through as both guys and girls, just to see what's different, but not many games do that in any meaningful way (Fallout 1 & 2, Arcanum, Vampire Bloodlines, KOTOR 2, and...uh...not a whole lot else).

I almost always play both, don't really have a preference one way or the other, you can prolly relate a bit better with male character with romance side quests etc. but female butt is always superior for 3rd person games.

Pretty much same response as everyone has given here. If i'm going to be gearing, murdering and looking at the same chars ass for 30 or more hours might aswell look good doing it. Hence i play with females most of the time.

Well generally I choose the gender based on the character class I am going to be playing . Broadly speaking if the character is a damage dealing idiot then a guy and if the character is intended to be agile then a girl. fox ex:- barbarian == guy, rogue == girl. If such a distinction is not possible then maybe a guy

I don't like playing as a woman.

Speaking of which, I don't understand those that didn't play with the default Shepard. The guy is featured in all ME related media, creating another character is like watching trailers for a Tom Cruise movie and when the movie comes out his role is played by Mike Myers!

I usually play as the guy because in most games, playing as a female really doesn't change anything besides a few love interests. as for the "looking at a guys backside" argument. I don't know about most of you guys but I'm usually looking off in the distance for enemies/objects and not looking at the foreground. 1/2 the times I don't even notice the character even in 3rd person RPGs.

You've got a point there but I still changed him up and gave him one of those cheesy little mustaches that just hug the upper lip and are 1/2 way to the nose. I've always wanted to be a character that sported one of those

well I don't really watch a lot of trailers (mostlr read previews and stuff) , so for me I wouldn't know if my character was Tom Cruise in the trailers or not :P

Also, I would not agree would your statement. I see it something like this. you see the trailers and wish god it was someone else let's say harrison ford instead of tom cruise. when the actual movie comes you are now able to replace tom cruise with ford

Well, even if someone gives me money, I won't play with a female character. I always always pick the wizard type in RPG's. but in diablo 2, since the wizard was female, I didn't pick it and I choosed the necromancer. I haven't seen myself playing a game with any female character.

Gamespot User Says: I make my character a female because it's just a game and they look better in clothes

Translation: I make my character a female because its the closest I'll ever get to a girl...*sniff*

I always make my main character a brutish ****(warrior/barbarian etc) and a male, then the alt would be a female spell caster/healer.

I choose him too, but the reason i did is because he was the best looking character, everything else felt inferior. I got to admit that i tried to creat the other John shephard from stargate Atlantis ...sadly it didnt work :(

Can we also flip this and ask the question to the girls? :D

Do girls prefer playing male or female characters in MMOs/RPGs?

From what I've seen it seems like girls prefer to play as girls more than boys prefer to play as boys. Personally my main characters all tend to be female but I don't really know if that's 'cause I'm female, or just 'cause they tend to have cooler armor. I also have male characters, and I tend to make them huge and butch...lol Maybe I just prefer looking at the female form, or seeing a girl character kick ass.

Whatever the reasoning behind your choices I don't think anybody should feel bad for playing as whatever the hell they want. I think only extremely immature people or children would say anything stupid about a guy playing a girl character.

The opening post said "vice versa", it was just aimed more at males because there are probably 20x more males here than females.

Depends on the game. At first playthrough I usually play as a male character. After depending how the game's story developed, on the 2nd playthrough I may consider playing as a female character.

In Guild Wars I always make female characters simply because most of the classes are better animated than the male counterpart.

I usually spend time to create a character that looks like me and then later on I create a female character. To be honest I don't feel it's strange to play a female character, maybe i'm used to it due to my past where I played Tomb Raider, Parasite Eve, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis etc. where the protaganist is female.

LOL. This, for MMO's. In Dungeon Runners, players generally seemed friendlier with my female character than with my male character. For SP, I've chosen a female just because...I guess I don't really give the gender of my character much thought.

really? i never noticed. tbh i dont mind either way unless one gender is particularly uglier than the other (male warriors in guildwars come to mind). also, i've realized that in mmos, my own character is usually the last thing im looking at (unless its wow and i have to spend 20 minutes flying from here to there in which case i have the camera fully zoomed out so that i can only see a speck that is my character, or ball of fur with a tail if its a tauren). in fact, in guildwars i once got told my face was glitched, i was ready to come up with a smart remark. but then i noticed my ranger's face (with a face-paint type headgear) did have his face glitched and i'd been wearing that for 2 weeks, never realizing it. i will pick one gender over the other if it has gameplay benefits, like the black widow perk in fallout3.
