Steam is coming to a new operating system

As weve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, weve come to the conclusion that the
environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself.
SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen.
It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.

You can play all your Windows and Mac games on your SteamOS machine, too. Just turn on your existing computer and run Steam as you always have - then your SteamOS machine can stream those games over your home network straight to your TV!

Sounds good for people too lazy to move their PCs or buy longer cables and for people who don't use PCs for work.

steam is in it for the endgame. they just want to eat into the console marketshare. i'm imagining a dorm room with 4 gamers, one of which has a proper gaming pc, while the other 3 enjoy his games on their machines using family sharing (who doesn't have a laptop), or something like that in a family.

I got my desktop right beside my TV so this is totally pointless for me. Not going to build another PC just so I can play less games.

This is simply absurd. Convert your fully functional PC to a half baked console experience. The very notion undermines the very purpose of playing games on a PC. But the drones will follow. :|

A clever temporary solution.

Though I still hope that they continue pushing native instead of network.

Well, that and don't turn into another canonical and start making incompatible standards with the system at large.

Windows' days are numbered as the premier OS for PC gaming. Microsoft had better do something for PC gamers soon, over the next few years, or they are going to lose millions of users.

This is pretty much what I have been saying for months. Let people build their own "steamboxes". All that Valve has to provide is the entire software side of things, and possibly their own controller.

A) Not everyone wants to have a PC in a living room and B) Not everyone wants to spend time setting up a PC in a living room/moving back and forth whenever they do feel like playing them. It's a convenient solution. Is it the best? Most efficient? Of course not. 2 PC's needed to play games in the living room is all sorts of bleh. But again, I could care less. My wants are not of the steam-box, they are of native ports rather than a networked solution. Streaming can be ok over LAN, but Native will always trump it. That and as I stated, don't want to be put into a decision spot between one vs the community.

This isn't going to kill windows. It's a streaming solution. Not even close to killing windows, let alone in terms of software or application support. You need Native support before you even begin to think about numbering windows days. Windows isn't going away for a long time.

Streaming is a feature of the OS, but I wouldn't call it a "solution". The website detailing the Steam OS said that hundreds of games already run natively on it. Think about the long term. Steam is already a juggernaut with their digital store alone. Developers will make games specifically for the Steam OS, eventually. After enough years of refinements and improvements, the Steam OS could replace Windows as a gaming OS.

Personally I am excited for this. My pc and tv are pretty far from connecting to one another, and sounds to me this will be a good media center as well. I'll be able to stream my movies and televison shows from my pc as well, according to what i read on there. I'm interested if this thing will able to have two people playing at the same time, so say I was playing skyrim on the pc while my little sis is playing sonic through the steam os box on the television?

I have a hunch that soon Valve will announce Half-Life 3, but make it exclusive to this SteamOS. Considering the Half-Life franchise's God-like status, most people won't think twice about installing SteamOS just to play Half-Life 3. Or else they might make Half-life 3 available for both Windows and SteamOS, but offer the SteamOS version at a discounted price, so as to promote SteamOS.

I am on Windows 8.

I own over 150 PC games.

All of them work fine.

What is the problem with Windows again?

So basically willingly gimp yourself into a bastardized mix between a media PC and a console but ignoring the advantages of either.

there are still two more announcements to go in the coming two days. regardless of what you might think about steamOS, valve is a company with vision, so this may be a stepping stone to something more meaningful.

I guess it's okay, I mean... It's okay if for some reason you only own a PC to play games, and apparently Steam games too. It's okay for people that either can't handle a PC and don't know what it's really for or people that have a nice HTPC. Will this destroy the evil Windows? No, what a pathetic and stupid side to take that would be. I'm pretty glad it's not an actual OS meant to replace Windows though.

So does this mean we no longer need Windows? We can just hop to Linux, and get the STEAM OS?

No, you'll need a Windows based PC to stream games that are currently unavailable for Linux.

I'm not sure honestly. That would be up to Valve to answer.

Lol at all the people complaing about this. It just might not be marketed towards you, like the 2DS. SteamOS will be a dedicated gaming operating system without all of the fluff of Windows. See the part where it says "We have acheived significant increases in graphics processing"? With this, new games coming out will support SteamOS so there will be no need to stream. Al

I've always wondered. Why do some people want Linux to grow in gaming if Windows does it already and perfectly fine? I'm all for products offering different things but Linux has always been the leader in top tier web servers and other type of servers, that's why it exists.

I can't speak for others, but primarily competition. It's always good for consumers to have different choices and see the developers of both push to create better solutions. If you have a situation where Linux becomes a viable platform to port all PC games to for every major release, then you suddenly change the landscape of the PC market. Valve says we should look forward to AAA Linux games in the future. They could offer monetary incentives, higher cut per game sold etc. At the moment linux is stuck in a vicious cycle of no games and no gamers. SteamOS might not succeed, but it might be an interesting few years.

6.5 million unique users on steam in a day. There is a lot of potential users for SteamOS. There are many games already on Linux. Some gamers will switch to it. More games will be developed for it. So more gamers will switch to it. Now all games are developed for linux. How else does a gaming device gather a user base and third party developers?

True, but wouldn't it mean worse for gaming? Let me explain: we already have issues with games programmed for both consoles and PCs (ports). Imagine if there was yet another platform for gaming on PC. It would mean more development times for devs = probably worst ports cause they get hurried. Double edged sword I say.

I figured that Valve would eventually build their own OS, but I didn't think they would do it so soon, but knowing how gay Gabe is for Linux, it doesn't surprise me.

My only concern is how well has Valve managed to convince current PC developers to begin (or begin again) programming for OpenGL.  Obviously, the move to OpenGL, if it happens, won't be overnight if Valve is successful at coercing the higher end game development community to move towards it.  However, Valve will definitely continue to support Steam on Windows because that's what the vast majority of users run Steam on.

In the least, this will be interesting, and the possible performance gains in going SteamOS may make me willing to have it as a dual-boot option.

It's nothing new for so many of the very successful indie PC game houses out their, as many of them do not even use DX, even on Windows. Mainstream (big console & PC multiplatform centric devs) should not have a difficult time adjusting, especially if they throw DX out the wayside. The Xbox One is the only platform that requires DX and devs do not have to release titles on it.

Disregarding Xbox One, that leaves PS4, PC, OSX, Linux, SteamOS as mainstream OpenGL platforms and Android and iOS platforms as OpenGL ES platforms.  Now if only ES and "high end" OpenGL could be integrated......

You do realize that Microsoft had a Tablet long before the iPad right?  And also a smartphone long before the iPhone right?

Right Products, Wrong Times...

poor marketing I think.

I agree, Microsoft has always made great products but marketed them wrong or not enough. Their current marketing team is better than past years though.

This is simply absurd. Convert your fully functional PC to a half baked console experience. The very notion undermines the very purpose of playing games on a PC. But the drones will follow. :|

Except you only have to have a computer powerful enough to receive a network stream and display the video. You could have your gaming pc in your room or office and have a tiny HTPC in your living room to play games there. I don't think they expect people to cripple their current gaming pc.

[QUOTE="bonafidetk"]Who is going to build a PC to use a half baked gaming OS.... Unless every game gets native Linux support then this whole idea is sorta pointless. I dont see that happening any time soon.MacBoomStick
Who is going to buy a 3DS/PS4/etc? Unless EVERY game gets native 3DS/PS4/etc support then the whole idea is pointless.

The comparison is not valid.

Fascinating. I wonder what it's going to be like. As much hype as this has received, there isn't a lot specifics as to how this is going to work. But if Steam OS can be turned into a desktop OS that's easy to use (compared to Linux distros of today), then that might turn me away from Windows for good.Â
