Announcement 2 is out.

Steam Machines

Much better than "Steambox". It sounds less like "xbox". It looks like they will have several tiers of hardware specifications, and the machines will be made by several different manufacturers. At the bottom of the FAQ, they say that more information on input will come out. I think it will be a new controller.

A steambox is a specific set of rules that a company must follow when building a machine meant to qualify as a steambox/steam machine. If they meet all the specification and it runs steamOS then it can be considered a steam machine and be sold by that company. Valve won't actually make a machine, they will just allow other computer makers to do it for them. So yes this is the steambox, there will be many from several different companies, all running steam OS.

Valve is a business first, and this says it all. Another "no use for me" from Valve like the "Big Picture" and "steambox" mumbo jumbo. Valve, put some of those hundred millions into making new games..

They probably are making new games. How do you know they aren't making new games? They're a big company, I'm sure they always have multiple divisions...

Microsoft needs to release a slightly stripped down gaming version of Windows for $50 in response to this. If people can get a free OS that runs PC games, Windows will suffer if Microsoft doesn't put out a cheap alternative on the market...

Hasn't Valve been releasing one game a year bar one year for the past 8 years or so?

Or actually fixing/improving Steam which takes them years to implement a simple feature.

What issues? We all know their customer sucks ass but other than that, it's better than any other DRM platform out there.

new IPs? No.

They have certainly brought new IPs. If we go by console generations, then since the beginning of last gen we have received Portal and Left 4 Dead. DOTA2 is also a new IP, although more along the line of "newly acquired and given Valve's touch."

In that context, you're right. I love me some Left 4 Dead series; it's one of my top favorite games where I've pour hours and hours of game time into them. The first Portal was extremely short but it did open up to Portal 2. I'll give Valve that. Other than a HL3 or HL2 Ep3, which is in the blackhole somewhere in the Universe, I would really like to see them develop a new IP. Or, just sucker me by releasing a Left 4 Dead 3 and i'll be happy. The L4D series cycle is broken and we don't know when we'll see another although there are some "leaks."

Some issues but I was mostly referring to features.

"Will I be able to build my own box to run SteamOS? Yes." so steam machines are basically pcs dedicated to run steamOS/steam/games.
