Valve are now letting us Team Fortress 2 players buy items directly from the in-gameMann Co. Store, should you want to purchase things directly.
I personally won't be using it, but I like how the option is there for those that want to.

An extra cool feature is the fact that "community item contributors will get paid based on the sales of their items". Very nice.

-

"One of the interesting side effects of shipping free updates for Team Fortress 2 over the years has been a large and devoted group of people who write us asking if they can simply buy game items directly. We also get regular feedback from the bean counters on our fourth floor, who -- after watching with tooth-grinding irritation as we shipped over 120 free updates to a three-year-old game -- gently suggested that we "make some f$*&ing money already."

Then it hit us: it'd make everybody happy if we really DID let players buy items directly. Players'd be happy because we actually listened to them for once, and the bean counters would be happy because in-game stores are the future of everything, including making some f$*&ing money already.

Flash forward a few months, and we're proud to introduce the
in-game Mann Co. Store. And, because we'd hate to satisfy the bean counters completely, we've decided community item contributors will get paid based on the sales of their items. So you can make some f$*&ing money already too.

Now, I'm sure you have dozens of questions, so just this once we put together a nifty
F.A.Q.Of course the best way to find out more is to fire up the game yourself and check out the new Mann Co. Store for yourselves!"

That's more the sort of thing I'd have expected from The Sims, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to have the option.

Just another example of how TF2 is turning into an MMO...and a hilarious one at that! Bring on the online TF2 store!

lol you guys are taking it easy because it's Valve. I can only see bad thing from that, with the future release of Portal 2 and all the other games.

What is TF2 these days? It seems to have aspirations to be something more than a class-based multiplayer game. Interesting development, certainly.

Valve's experimenting platform. I bet this and Alien Swarm are testing the waters for a free-to-play, microtransactions based DOTA.

I guess this update is pretty cool for people who don't spend 30 hours per week to play TF2. Not to mention that the community will get even more creative hoping Valve will pick up their items and sell them.

This is a better way for some to get the items they want than idle servers so I have nothing against the store although I will not use it.

Selling them on E-Bay and keeping Valve out of this loop, that's what's wrong.

The stuff you can get at the store is nothing but fluff items. Read the FAQ on the site. Any new item that alters the gameplay will be free for everyone. Valve has specifically said they aren't going to provide any advantages for those who fork over real funds. Valve =/ Nexon, SOE, RoM, or any of that other crap.

At least I hope so :D

If another company made this they probably put 10 dollar price. I really don't understand why people whining. I think they like to pay 10 dollar to a 2 dollar worth dlc.

Guys, 17 euros 50 for a hat that actually boosts stats if equipped with other items. I'll just leave it at that. At first, I was thinking if hats were about 3 bucks and weapons 1 buck I would gladly buy from the store and support valve, but no way. 50 euros for the polycount pack, what a joke.

It's funny to see the Steam forums raging about the high prices. Two hours ago they were raging about the store being introduced:lol:

In other news, a paste from someone else:

The new sets all together look weaker in comparison to the ideal damaging sets,
Soldier can only have 3 rockets with no shotgun option should he go for the set option,
Scout will have no scatter gun,
Pyro does less damage and has 10% bullet vulnerability,
Sniper has 20% bullet vulnerability with no headshot option,
Spy can't disguise and does less revolver damage,

To be honest I don't really care, I'm not going to be buying anything at those prices (Valve's loss). However, it does shine a new light on valve.

If they were cheap, people would say they're cheap just to make more people buy them...

No matter the price, people would still ****.

Be happy that not too many will rush to buy:)

I haven't played TF2 in so long. In fact I stopped when they just released all the drop items and there were people idling for them. That was the last straw for me. I'm glad I didn't hang on because this may have put me into cardiac arrest. How can you justify the prices? One of the hats is almost as much as the game itself? Just not reasonable. The total cost of all items is like $360.... Don't some of the items provide advantages? And the only way to get them for free is to spend hundreds of hours playing? Big supporter of Valve usually but can't stomach this at all.

how is 3yrs of free dlc not enough to win a gamer's trust? (not to mention l4d dlc and alien swarm)

if you feel upset about this news, you shoudl readthe faq-

"Our plan is to continue updating TF2 just like we always have, adding free maps, game modes, new features, and more. The Mann Co. Store is simply an alternative way of obtaining items that other players can earn during gameplay."

They added that too.

I'm still cautious about this turn of events, but I guess it's not bad as long as everything is still obtainable in-game for free. I sort of feel like Valve deserves some compensation for continuing to update and keep the game alive for so long.

Scout will have no scatter gunBaranga

You mean no Pistol.

The Scattergun replacement (Shortstop) functions as a somewhat different Scattergun. Despite its appearance, it is not a Pistol.

Clip is only 4 shots, but it reloads all of them at once. The tradeoff is interesting, and overall I'm liking it. The speed debuff is not really noticeable..then again I don't think I've been on the other end of it yet.

Good for you Valve! You deserve more money for this game which you have supported so well.

Obviously they are going to get a lot of hassle for this as a huge portion of PC gamers are spoiled little brats who think that game devs should do everything for nothing!

Where the **** is the polycount pack that was supposed to be released late august? Valve already has enough money from the entire steam service and what they've sold so far. This just seems greedy TBH.

EDIT: OH **** OFF

Initially, we will only be selling the Polycount Pack community items, as this will let us work out the kinks with a small number of contributors. Once we've mastered contributor payments, we'll be expanding the store to include all the community contributions. We plan to do this as soon as possible.

The items provide alternate playstyles, not advantages (if anything, they tend to have huge disadvantages - like the new sniper rifle prevents the sniper from getting headshots, and the new spy knife stops him from using the disguise kit), and every single useful item is still available in game through random drops/crafting/trading. Also, it usually doesn't take hundreds of hours to get the items - they drop at a pretty steady rate, and only the hats are particularly rare.

simardbrad

The polycount items are free random drops, so you got exactly what you wanted anyway. The store is just a bonus for people who don't want to wait for the items - but they're crazily overpriced anyway, so it's not a big deal.

And how on earth is this greedy? After three years of free content updates, is it so bad that Valve might want to seek alternate, non-compulsory, non-game-changing ways of funding these updates?
Hell, I'm tempted to buy one, just as a donation to Valve for all of the awesome stuff over the past few years.

Uhm for the price that I bought TF2 w/c was $9.99, I can say that I should not have paid full price for it. I have played it 24/7 since buying it & paying $$$ for the bundlesis justified with the amount of time playing the game. If you buy the polypack w/c is $49.99 & you play the game in 30 days that will bring down the cost to just $1.66 a day for the 17 items in the pack. I found myself buying the pack because I play the game all the time. I can't believe people are hating valve for this.

I don't have any problem with microtransactions (although I don't go for them personally), and I actually think TF2 was worth $50 from the get-go.

My problem is the fact that they added so much crazy garbage to TF2 in the first place. I haven't played it since it was first released, but the game seems too convoluted to me now. In a normal game like UT or CS, you can learn to recognize all the different weapons and items that people are using, which allows you to strategize and counter accordingly. But with all kinds of new items being added to TF2 all the time, how are you supposed to keep track of it all? How are you supposed to know when the heavy you're fighting has some crazy thing that has some particular effect? Isn't it all just pure chaos?

I'm actually reluctant to try getting back into it because getting familiar with all the new stuff seems like such a monumental task.

Anyone else feel this way?

I don't, but then again I've been playing the game during every update and have gotten used to all of the different weapons. The classes still effectively play in the same ways, give or take a few game-changers (like the Dead Ringer or Chargin' Targe), and there's nothing too crazy out there that you wouldn't immediately pick up on, imo.

Thanks, that's good to know. I do miss it. :D

That really is hilarious. It's like saying; "Want to play TF2 but can't be bothered to play TF2? Purchase these items today!"

It's exactly the same principle as someone buying a high-level WoW character.

It kind of takes a ridiculous amount of gametime to get even one hat, something your average TF2 player may never even reach. But then again I've never cared for the purely cosmetic aspects of the game.

Some hats, I repeat, freaking HATS IN A GAME, goes for 17.49 euros. That's 23.92 dollars. What.. the.. ****. The game itself costs 10 euros right now. They also sell a bundle with a few weapons for 50 euros. Couldn't believe it when I saw this. You suck, Valve.

I don't have any problem with microtransactions (although I don't go for them personally), and I actually think TF2 was worth $50 from the get-go.

Didn't feel that way much before, but now there's even an item that make snipers invulnerable to headshots. I wonder how many snipers I will try to kill before I realise they can't die. And there are about 50 new items now. Doubt I'll memorize all that crap.

Given how few hats I've gotten since most of my playtime was before they implemented hats and random drops I've always thought it'd be nice if I'd be able to buy them but at the prices there charging valve its insane for what is a cosmetic item one hat was as high as $17.50!!! Really no problem with the store since they don't force you to buy but when the bundle of discounted hats and weapons is at a "discounted price of $50 and normally cost $135 something is wrong. Now I do plan on buying some on the new weapons for the classes i play all the time like the blackbox for soldier since given how little i play tf2 now a days and the low drop rate I'll never be able to craft or get them all as random drops considering how low the rate it your almost forced into buying them really or odds are you'll never get to enjoy them.

They're not invulnerable, they just don't die. And they can't headshot either.
