i have a question i have a 360 with component cables, and soon a wii with component cables. My TV only have 1 component input. I have a 720p 46 inch samsung lcd which is pretty new, and i have a yamaha reciever. As far as i know the yamaha reciever seems to have compnent inputs into it but is it possible to make it so i plug it into the yamaha and it somehow gets to the tv screen? thanksAdvanced1

Your Yamaha receiver can do the component video switching for you.  Just buy one extra component video cable (go to www.monoprice.com), plug that extra cable into the component out on the back of your receiver to the sole component input on your TV.  Then connect the 360 to one of the component inputs on your receiver with the Wii plugged into the other.  Just make sure to match the sound inputs as well, i.e., if the 360 is plugged into Video 1, plug the optical cable in the matching optical input (could be called Optical 1 or similar).  Do the same with the Wii.

I was wondering if my monitor i have will run a 360 in HD. Im going to get a new tv but i dont have the money yet.

stangster

It will run the 360 in HD but not in native widescreen.  You'll see black bars on the top and bottom of the image.  Just buy the MS VGA cable.

Hi Galvatron,

I have been reading some of your posts on the forums regarding HDTV setups and you seem to be a bit of a genius!!

I was hoping that you may have the answer to my problem, and was wondering if you could possibly answer my question.

I have recently purchased an LCD HD-Ready TV, but open getting it home, noticed that this TV only has an DVI-I connector on the back. Having purchased the Premium Pack console I only have the RED, GREEN & BLUE HD Connectors that come with the console. If I buy the Xbox 360 VGA Cable, will that plug into the DVI-I slot and allow me to utilise the HD capabilities of the console?

Currently I have this great TV and Gears of War, but I'm having to play it all in Standard Def!!

Please Help

daJonesy7

You're not out of luck. Just buy the MS official VGA cable for the 360 and then buy a VGA to DVI converter dongle (first link below) and you're set. Again, not to beat a dead horse but there are plenty of other (more expensive) places to buy this converter but don't be fooled, the one below not only is inexpensive but will fill your needs.

If you want to skip buying the VGA cable altogether, you can buy a component to DVI converter dongle (second link below) and this should work as well. A small warning, I've never seen this converter work in person so your mileage may vary and the safe and recommended route would probably be to get the 360's VGA cable.

Hi Galvatron,

One quick question.

Is this adapter you recommended neccessary? I have been reading the specifications of my TV set and I have noticed the following statement.

"It has a VGA input too, which receives the signal from your PC so you can use it as a TV and a PC monitor. A set of side jacks has a composite A/V input with S-video, a mini headphone jack, and an audio in for using the TV's speakers with your PC."

Does this mean that the VGA cable could plug straight into the DVI-I connector on my LCD TV?

Thanks

If you TV has a VGA input, you can plug the VGA cable straight into it without the converter.  If it has only a DVI input, you'll have to buy the converter, VGA cannot plug directly into DVI.

alright, im back. nice to see you are still doing this galvatron, its great. anyway, i am looking to pick up a 40" sammy LCD from amazon soon. i am deciding between 3 models: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN-S4095D-1080p-LCD-HDTV/dp/B000GDEZLQ/sr=8-2/qid=1166033592/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-1185977-4599350?ie=UTF8&s=electronics http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LNS4092D-HDTV-ATSC-Tuner/dp/B000EZKAHO/sr=8-3/qid=1166033592/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/102-1185977-4599350?ie=UTF8&s=electronics http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LNS4041D-Wide-Integrated-Tuner/dp/B000ELQTZA/sr=8-4/qid=1166033592/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4/102-1185977-4599350?ie=UTF8&s=electronics right now i am leaning toward the middle one due to the high contrast and dual hdmi. i am curious which you think is the best bang for the buck. the 1080p would be comforting to buy, its only about $300 more. my question is this. i can wait until after the holiday. do you think the prices will drop significantly enough to make it worth waiting so i could get the 1080p model, or should i just grab the middle one?

I like this FJ, it has VERY high CR (10000:1) and an unusually long warranty (3 years).  I'm not seeing price but considering it's 63", I'd assume that it's over $5k at least.  At that level, you have a wealth of options to consider but this plasma is not bad at all.

I guess it's a matter of opinion, but Pioneer is considered the class leader in plasmas but they're not cheap.

All not bad choices, I especially like the styling of the first and second Samsungs.  Besides the resolution, the only major differences between the three are that the 1080p panel has higher CR (6000:1 vs 5000:1 and 3000:1) and one extra component input (if you go with the second or third panel, you may have to get a component video switcher to connect an extra component video source).

Re: whether 1080p is worth the extra $300 or so, like I said, there are hard to see differences between them and if it's a matter of saving money, I usually recommend going with the 720p panel.  Still, if I had to take a wild guess, if you want to wait until after the holiday for a price cut, I'd predict that it would take at least until next summer before 40" 1080p panels come down to the 40" 720p panels' prices of today so it's up to you.

One word of warning, an HDTV is a pretty high ticket item and considering that a lot of things can go wrong with them, ordering online is a bit of a risk.  Yes, you can save some money online but it might be worthwhile to buy from a brick and mortar store so if you have to make a return, it would just be a matter of driving instead of shipping.  Also, before taking possession at the store, inspect the box thoroughly because some unscrupulous stores take returned merchandise, tape and staple them up clumsily, and try to pass them off as new.

If your CRT monitor has a male VGA cord, you're going to have to buy a male to female VGA converter to plug up the 360 using the MS VGA cable (go to monoprice.com for the VGA converter).

That Polaroid LCD will display 720p but I can't recomment it for a few reasons.  Its CR is too low (500:1), it has no DVI or HDMI inputs, and it is way too small to fully appreciate the higher rez.  Plus the warranty is too short (3 months).

Do DVDS you buy have previews of other movies on them? I just mainly rent and only own the matrix and LOTR series. When I load a rental on my portable DVD player the loading times seem much longer. The DVD appears to detect something on my portable and doesn't always load right away. Insignia 10.2 IS-PDVD10 is the portable dvd player.

Hello,
Basically, I am hopefully getting a 360 for xmas, and need to change my TV, as my current one only supports aerial...yea its "quite" old. Anyway, I'm really confused by HDTV/ which TV's I see on amazon etc. actually support it, and was looking for some help getting started. Think I'll only be able to afford a non HDTV in the end, but even that is confusing me! Any help is much appreciated!

My wild guess is based on two issues:

-even though it's been a slow Christmas saleswise, electronics have been a pretty bright spot, people are buying up HDTVs at a decent rate

-as it stands now, there is still a substantial price difference between 720p and 1080p TVs (at least a few hundred dollars) and for 1080p to come down to the 720p price level, it will take at least a few months for that few hundred dollars difference to be gapped.

Disney is famous of loading previews on their DVDs before you even get to the main navigation screen.

In terms of load times, DVD players aren't universal in that what may take a few seconds to load on one player may take even longer on another.  I've heard that portable players take longer to load discs especially if the battery is low (it takes a lot of power to spin up that disc).

Another explanation is that rental DVDs get put through all kinds of abuse and one that is especially scratched up or scuffed may take longer than usual to load.

Yes you will need both the 360's VGA cable plus a male to female VGA adapter for hook up the 360 to your CRT monitor.  Make sure that your CRT's cord is male (most of them are).  How you can tell is if the dongle has holes or spikes (holes=female, spikes=male).

I can't give a good recommendation unless you give me some choices.  Determine what your budget is, how big your room is, and what you want to plug up to it, browse some online sites, find some sets that fit your needs, and then post back here.

TitusAndronicus

1.  A few ways to tell is look for HD inputs like component, HDMI, and DVI.  If it has a few of these (preferably at least two), you may have an HDTV.  Another way to tell is Google the brand and model number (it should be on the back near the serial number) and you should arrive at the manufacturer's product page.  If the page lists a native resolution of 1280x720 or 1920x1080, you definitely have an HDTV.

2.  Just about all brands out there make very decent TVs.  There are some brand leaders depending on technology, for instance, Pioneer makes the best plasmas, Samsung and Sharp make the best flat panel LCDs, Samsung makes the best DLP-RPs, Sony makes the best LCD-RPs, and JVC and Sony make the best LCoS-RPs.  If you want to go all out and get a front projector, look for Optoma, Infocus, Sanyo (yes, Sanyo), Panasonic, and a few others.

3.  For 5.1, you have two choices, home theater kits or separates.  Kits tend to be cheaper and easier to set up but their sound quality is not that great and their have limited connectivity and expandability.  Separates are more expensive and take up more room but you can choose which receiver you want to pair with which speakers, they tend to have better sound.

When buying surround sound, look for connectivity (component video switching, digital optical inputs), surround modes (built in Dolby Digital, dts, and Dolby Pro Logic II processing), power (manufacturers like to exaggerate these figures, look for at least 60 watts RMS), and a few others.  If you have any particular brands and models in mind, just post them here and I'll get back to you.

Thanks for the advice.  Never knew to look by the serial number - that will help immensely.  Thanks for taking the time to answer those (probably inane) questions.

Okay...

My room is about 9.5'x11.75' (approximate), and I have a TV stand in the corner that - at its widest point - is about 38".

Primarily, my use for a TV will be gaming, and then watching movies second. TV would be a close third. And the most I'd probably watch on TV would probably more movies, mXc and comedy central, so it's not like I need an HD box (at least in the foreseeable future).

I currently have:
- Sega Dreamcast w/ VGA box
- Xbox 1, Nintendo GameCube, and PlayStation2 w/ Component Video Cables, connected to a single "HD" switch.
- A Samsung up-scaling DVD player with HDMI out (that I pretty much received for free and has been gathering dust because of no TV)

I know the dvd player won't output an HD signal unless it's using HDCP, because I tried it with my roomie's Dell LCD HDTV, and since it doesn't have HDCP support, it wouldn't play any disc inserted into the unit.

The next consoles I'm looking forward to would be a Wii (to replace the GameCube) and an Xbox 360, though I probably will keep my Xbox 1, once I get it repaired, and as long as NFL 2k5 isn't "compatible" with the 360. I don't intend on getting a PlayStation3 until I'm forced to if and when my PS2 decides to bite it and I can't find a standard-style replacement.

I'm not particular *to* any brand... but after the considerable hell in using them, I would certainly prefer something other than Sony (or any sub-brands that they make).

I would like 1080p if possible, but that seems physically impossible except with a computer monitor.

Any ideas?

How can I get the video game audio and my ipod music coming out of a speaker combined. So I could just mute the music in the game and have my own custom soundtrack controllable from my ipod or mp3 player.

So I could just mute the music in the game and have my own custom soundtrack controllable from my ipod or mp3 player.redarmyfox
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4872129 I have a similar shelf system and it has game sync but only for CDs cdrws etc, FM or cassette that I use as music with my game. It only has one game audio input but the one above could mix your ipod or your PC with gaming, I'm not sure.

Unfortunately, your space measurements are going to limit your choices.  After doing some research, if you want a rear projection microdisplay (DLP, LCD, LCoS), you're limited to 42" at most (this also rules out 1080p since most rear projection 1080p microdisplays start at 50" and up).  Thankfully, an LCD panel should fit your needs.

For a theater console that is 38" wide, you can get a panel from 32" up to 40".  If you want 1080p, you're stuck with a 37"-40" panel.  Thankfully, there are many choices in this range and you won't have to consider Sony because Samsung and Sharp are arguably the leaders in LCD flat panels.

Re: connectivity, look for a panel with a VGA input for the DC, at least 2 component inputs for your other consoles (this should suffice since you already have a component switcher), and at least 1 HDMI input.  Most of the latest panels easily have this connectivity suite (even 2 HDMI inputs).

But I'd recommend a Samsung panel over a Sharp for two reasons.  First, on average, Samsungs have higher contrast ratios than Sharps and second, I've noticed that most Sharps do not come with VGA inputs while most Samsungs do.  Oh, and you won't have to worry about HDCP compliance because just about every display with an HDMI input already has HDCP built in.

That's definitely a hardware problem and if it's still under warranty, I'd highly recommend that you take it back to the store for replacement.  If this isn't possible, call Samsung, they have a reputation for taking care of their customers.

Also, don't let this one incident sour you on Samsung, even the best brands produce lemons occasionally and Samsung for the most part makes excellent LCDs.

I have a feeling it'd probably be safer to go with an LCD panel, simply because my current "tv furniture" which I mentioned earlier is a corner unit, so it's meant to fit in that little corner there.

I'd prefer it if i could get a 1080p display... just sad that it's so easy to find a 24" computer monitor that is 1080p, but it's next to impossible to find anything remotely close to that size for a TV.

Though not 1080p, this one seems to have all the inputs I'd need, and didn't look bad at all in person.

I know my brother has a Sharp AQUOS (he works @ Best Buy, so he gets discounts on this stuff... but he lives way too far for me to just go visit and get him to hook me up :( ) and a 360 now and loves it to death.

Yeah, that Westinghouse isn't bad, it has a wealth of inputs (even though it could use one more HDMI), decent CR, and it's pretty bright, all for a pretty good price.  I will have to warn you, while this isn't a bad panel, most of the time with TVs, you get what you pay for and this LCD probably won't have as good picture quality as a comparable Samsung or Sharp.

For the right price (I didn't see the price listed), the 50" Panasonic is not bad.  It has VERY high CR and a good connectivity suite.  One minor quibble I have is that it doesn't seem to have a PC input.

One word of caution, if you can help it, don't go below 50" for a plasma the reason being is that 99% of plasmas below 50" have a native resolution of 1024x768.  Full 720p resolution requires at least 1280x720 so you won't get full 720p with a 42" plasma.

Good for watching TV, but as it is a projection TV, I wouldn't really recommend it for gaming (360/PS3).

If you read any console's instruction manual, they'll tell you not to use projection TVs. The reason is that images can get burned into the screen if left stationary for an extended amount of time. So, in actuality, you may be OK as long as you turn off the TV when leaving the game on pause for extended amounts of time.

Wow, $1145 for this 1080p Samsung is a STEAL, the cops should come arrest you if you buy it for that cheap, LOL.

Samsung arguably makes the best DLPs on the market.  The one you're considering has a great connectivity suite (2 HDMI, 2 component, 1 VGA, etc.) and Samsung is known for having good warranty service.

One word of caution, Samsung DLPs and other brands have been known for image lag for games.  This is probably due to the problem of 480i and 480p games being fed into the TV and the built in scaler having trouble processing them to the native resolution.  If you are going to mostly play HD sources like an HD box, BD or HD DVD player, 360, or PS3 on it, lag won't be a problem because most HD video bypasses the internal scaler.  If you feed any source that is less than HD, you might have an issue (although the latest Samsungs have better scalers and image lag should be a non-issue).

If I were you, I would buy this Samsung pronto before they come to their senses and realize that they're selling it for too low.  This is the lowest price I've seen for this particular 1080p Samsung.

I am thinking about buying an LCD HDTV to go with my 360.

Here are my questions:

1. Who makes the best HD LCDs?

2. I'll be sitting about 8 ft away for now but eventually it will be farther so what is a good size? (I want one in 32"-40")

3. Would VGA be better than Component on an LCD?

4a. Which LCDs have the best contrast ratio?

4b. My dad's 61" Panasonic is 10000:1 so will a 3000:1 be a real noticable dip?

That's all I can think of now but I would like to thank you for this thread it has been very helpful.:D

Actually, only CRT project TVs are subject to burn in.  Microdisplay projection (DLP, LCD, LCoS) have no possibility of burn in but a small chance of temporary image retention.  So if you have a DLP, LCD, or LCoS microdisplay, game away to your heart's content, it won't burn in.

Yes, there are still HDTVs that use CRT (but they're increasingly rare).  If that CRT has HDMI inputs, that is a dead giveaway, you definitely have an HDTV.  To check for sure, look at the model number on the back, go to the manufacturer's website, and look for the TV's native resolution.  If it's 1920x1080 (typical for CRT HDTVs), you've got an HDTV.

Answers:

1. Samsung and Sharp

2. To calculate viewing distance, take the screen size and multiply it by 1.5. So if you're going to sit 8 ft. away (96"), go for at least a 40"

3. This depends on the TV. Some TVs' VGA input will only accept a resolution that is below the native resolution, i.e., a 1366x768 TV may only accept 1024x768 signal via VGA. If this is the case, component will be better.

4a. Probably Samsung

4b. Manufacturers exaggerate their CR numbers all the time. If they're telling the truth, there will be a noticeable dip in black level between 10000:1 and 3000:1

Samsung's 26" LCDs now run under $1k so look for those.  If you go with the Westinghouse, you're still getting a great TV for a great price so don't feel bad if you go in that direction.

[QUOTE="DarkMasterX13"] I'm planning on picking up an Xbox 360 soon and I want to hook it into my BenQ 20in Widescreen LCD monitor and its native resolution is 1680 x 1050. Would the xbox display HD on this monitor? Will the image not be stretched or distorted? And what resolution would it display? 780p or 1080i? Thanks for your time and ill post a link to my monitor with its specs below: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824014105

Looks like you would have to get the 360 VGA cables and game at 720p. The 360 premium comes with HD component cables but not VGA cables.

This isn't a bad choice for $500.  Decent CR, standard 720p LCD resolution and response time.  My only gripe is that is doesn't have a lot of connectivity choices with only 1 HDMI and 1 component input.  It doesn't even have a VGA input so you can use it as a computer monitor.  Also, I hope you're going to use this TV in a small room or you're going to sit close to it because 26" is pretty small.
