advice needed here, i have this tv: (well, very similar... think it's a slightly different model no, with a vga input)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-LE32R41BDX-Widescreen-Ready-FREEVIEW/dp/B000A0D8FY
and this surround setup
http://www.amazon.co.uk/PHILIPS-Theatre-System-HTS6510-05/dp/B000J4SZ2C/sr=1-3/qid=1164732617/ref=sr_1_3/203-7325624-5319118?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

i'm a bit stuck deciding what connections to use, i have too many consoles!

just need recommendations on what leads to use for what!

xbox 360 - currently on component, would i benefit from using the vga lead? and then what would i need to do about audio?

dvd player with home cinema setup - currently on the scart it came with - not the best picture! it has hdmi, but i was saving that for ps3 next march (damn delays) is s-video any good? or would i be better off using component, and switching 360 to vga?

wii - getting it in a couple of weeks, scart?

ps3 - i think it's gotta be hdmi for this one :)

also, i think theres a dvi input, i know nothing about this :( is it similar to hdmi? ) i keep hearing the two in the same sentence...

any thoughts please. i just utterly confused myself :D

360:
One advantage of using the VGA cable is that it gives you more resolution choices than just 480, 720, and 1080 so yes, if you can, I'd recommend you pick up the cable if your TV has a VGA input.  Also, every time I've seen the 360 connected via VGA, it does give a slightly better picture over component.  Re: audio, the VGA cable has an optical output on the dongle so you should still be able to plug it into your receiver and get Dolby Digital sound.  If not, it still has the red/white audio leads that you can use (optical is stil preferable)

DVD:
Don't waste your time with S-video, it will probably be a miniscule improvement over scart but if your DVD player can do progressive scan (I assume it does since it has an HDMI out), use component to get a progressive scan signal.  I'll follow up on this below on the DVI answer.

Wii:
Unfortunately, the Wii only comes with a composite cable (awful picture quality) and there seems to be a shortage of Wii component cables.  If you can be patient, save your money, tolerate the composite cable for now, and wait for the component cable to play the Wii at 480p.

PS3:
Definitely use HDMI for this.  Don't be fooled into buying an expensive HDMI cable, buy an inexpensive cable from www.monoprice.com

DVI:
If your TV has a DVI input, you're in luck (the only difference between HDMI and DVI is that HDMI carries picture and sound while DVI only carries picture).  You can plug the PS3 into the HDMI input and plug your DVD player i into this input.  If your DVD player has HDMI out, you'll need an HDMI to DVI conversion cable.  Again, www.monoprice.com carries these and don't be fooled into buying an expensive cable, use Monoprice.

That auction closed down so I couldn't see that TV specifically but from Olevia's website, they're not bad TVs.  I looked at the 5 Series 32" LCDs and they have pretty good stats, 1600:1 CR, 8 ms response, 1 HDMI and 1 component input.  Of course, Olevia's claim to fame is their competitive prices so for the money, you're getting a lot of TV.

Just two words of caution.  It's a fact that while the budget brands like Olevia and Vizio provide good quality for the money, they simply do not produce as good a picture as Samsung or Sharp as examples (arguably the market leaders in flat panel LCDs).  Also, this is a very, very minor point but I've never been a fan of Olevia's styling.  The drab gray exterior combined with the speakers and frame that look too thick just don't do much for me.  But hey, if you like the styling and more importantly the picture quality, you can't go wrong with Olevia.

If it's anything like my Toshiba 'book, look on the lower left corner of the keyboard.  There should be a Fn button.  Hold it down while tapping F5 and you will tell your 'book to activate its VGA output.  Also, if you already have the VGA cable plugged into your laptop and plugged into your LCD before starting it up, this should automatically switch the laptop into external output mode.

For your 360, you'll need a digital optical cable (don't be fooled into buying an expensive one, a la, Monster, go to www.monoprice.com for a cheap reliable cable) and remember to activate digital audio output on the proper dashboard blade.

For your TV, it should have an analog output (red/white).  Just get a red'white audio cable (again, look at monoprice.com).

I'm looking for a bedroom TV that will also be for my Xbox 360. I'm deciding between these LCDs...

I'm looking for the best LCD I can get under $1000. The Samsung looks the best overall to me, what do you think? Or maybe some suggestions outside of these. Any idea why the first BRAVIA is rated so much lower than the second 26" BRAVIA?

Many thanks.

So I decided to purchased an Xbox 360. I currently have a crt TV. Now what would be the best setup for me? I have a good 8 to 11 feet of distance between My TV and couch. I want at least a 50 inch television. I was leaning more towards a Plasma TV. The reasons I want a Plasma vs a LCD are that I like the higher contrast on the plasma TVs , apparently on average the refresh rate is quicker on the plasma, the viewing angle is better. I am just now reading articles on the different types of TV and their advantages/disadvantages. Some of you guys seem really knowledgeable so I want to know. My budget is 3500$ and I might be able to convince my wife of a little higher lol. I do not care about getting 1080p because in my opinion it’s not worth the jump. I’ll just get better later on. I am wondering if I should care how many HDMI ports the TV has. I assume that eventually I will be plugging in more HDMI enabled objects into the TV. I plan on getting HD channels as well (I love watching hockey so at least that channel) I’ve read able people buying expensive cabling for nothing. So with an Xbox 360 , a plasma TV, an amp for surround sound(this is about a year or two old so it doesn’t have an HDMI output , if that even exists), and eventually HD channels, a progressive scan DVD player. So what would I need to get cabling wise without dishing out cash for nothing! I live in Montreal Canada so if anyone knows of a good place I can buy a Plasma TV other then your usuall Best buy or whatnot that would be great. Also any suggestions on a 50 to 55 inch Plasma Tv for near 3000ish dollars would be greatly appreciated. I’ll answer any questions on information that I might be omitting. Thanks for the help guys :)

Hmm, the first and second Sonys have almost identical specs.  Keep in mind, though, those are only user reviews, maybe some of the users for the first Sony just weren't in a good mood that day.  Oh well.

I'd recommend the Samsung over the Sonys for three reasons.  First, the Samsung has a higher contrast ratio (3000:1) than the Sonys (1300:1).  Higher CR means deeper blacks, deeper blacks mean better shadow detail which means better overall picture quality.  Second, the Samsung has a dual HDMI input as well as a PC input.  The Sonys only have a single HDMI input (you'll probably need at least two if you want to plug up your PS3 and an HDTV receiver).  Third, with the Samsung, you're getting a TV with better specs and connectivity for about $100-$300 less than the Sonys.

So if it were me, I'd go for the Samsung (which, along with Sharp, arguably make the best LCD panels on the market today).

If you're going to sit 8-11 ft. from the TV, 50" would be the minimum distance I'd recommend (proper viewing distance is calculated by multiplying the screen size by about 1.5).  The good news is if your budget is $3500, you're right in the ballpark of quality 50" plasmas (at least here in the US).  Here's the rundown:

-1080p: this has been way overmarketed, yes, 1080p is the highest current resolution offered for HDTVs but there is little picture quality difference compared to 720p/1080i.  Also, if you're aiming for plasma, there are 1080p plasmas out there but they are prohibitively expensive.  So a 720p plasma will more than suit your needs and will not set you back as much as a 1080p plasma.

-Plasma vs. LCD: you're right, plasmas normally have much higher contrast ratios than LCD (some as high as 10000:1) and they have better refresh rates and wider viewing angles.  But LCDs are brighter, have better color definition, use less electricity, are lighter, and have zero chance of image burn in compared to plasma.  Still, in terms of overall picture quality, plasma tends to beat LCD.

-HDMI ports: most modern 50" plasmas I've researched come with 2 HDMI ports so that should be plenty if you get a PS3 and an HDTV receiver.  Most also come with at least 2 component inputs so that will cover you for your 360 and Wii as well.

-Cables: again, don't be fooled or scared into buying unreasonably priced cables.  From my experience, there is a not a bit of difference between a $10 cable and a $100 cable.  For the 360, all you'll need is an optical audio cable (remember to switch digital audio on in the 360's settings blade).  For the PS3 and HDTV receiver, you'll need an HDMI cable as well as an optical audio cable for each.  For the Wii, just order the component cable from Nintendo's website.  For your progressive scan DVD player, you'll need a component cable and either an optical or coaxial audio cable (look on the back of your player to see which one it uses; both serve the same purpose).  Go to www.monoprice.com for cheap and reliable cables.

-Where to buy/what to buy: I'm not familiar with electronics stores in Canada but www.crutchfield.com has a good selection.  Also, if you're wondering which company makes the best plasmas, hands down, Pioneer is that company.  But if you want a Pioneer 50", it may cost more than $3500.

Two words of caution.  Burn in is overplayed re: plasmas but to be safe, keep the contrast and brightness low; there may be some image retention, especially when gaming and if this occurs, turn off the plasma for a few hours and the image should fade.  Also, if you live in a high altitude area, you may want to rethink your choices because plasmas have been reported to make a buzzing sound.  Good luck.

Don't worry, there aren't stupid questions, just stupid people (j/k).

If you have a surround receiver, you won't have to plug the 360 up to the TV, only to the receiver.  Make sure your receiver has an optical audio input and then buy an optical audio cable, plug it into the 360's component video dongle (the part that plugs into the back of the 360), and after activating the digital audio output from the 360's dash, you're set.

Im picking up this Samung 32" HDTV next week from www.play.com (£599)

Here is HDTV and specs...

http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/television/tftlcd/le26r71bxxeu.asp?page=Specifications

I cant see anything wrong with it but was hoping for a second opinion.....

My questions are:

* My current 27" Samsung HDTV has slight blur on moving images, mainly on football games. Im guessing this is due to ms response. Im not sure but i think it is 12 or over. Its not that noticeble but i see the new one i want is 8ms, shud i expect a good improvment?

* I will use this as a secondary monitor for PC via VGA at 1366x768(this res is fine as i use this now) but was wondering does the gamemode feature effect PC games?

* Will i see an improvement from havn a gamemode feature compared to my current Samsung HDTV which doesnt?

Heres a image for you to see...

Please answer asap cos i wanna order it lol.

Mmk I am thinking of getting a hdtv between 20 to 25 inches. What would you suggest getting? It preferably needs to be less than $700 since I am not exactly rich at the moment.

I can't say yes or no to this LCD because the contrast ratio, refresh rate, and HDMI ports are not listed.  Still, generally speaking, for a 27" LCD, $570 CDN is not bad but be sure to check its contrast ratio (look for at least 1000:1) and refresh rate (at least 8 ms) before buying.

Please answer asap cos i wanna order it lol.

ajames_123

-older LCDs' refresh rates are usually 12-16 ms.  Most newer LCDs (including that Samsung) are rated at least at 8 ms so that should make image lag a non-issue.

-most TVs' game modes just unnaturally boost contrast and brightness and edge enhancement and 99% of the time, I recommend that it not be used.  For your PC, it shouldn't affect it unless you turn it on (some TVs won't allow game mode on the PC input).

-again, most game modes boost contrast, brightness, and edge enhancement to unnatural levels and probably should not be used.  Just calibrate your TV with a tune up disc from Sound and Vision or Avia and you should be okay.

Thanks for responding to my questions.

So Pioneer is the best. What do you suggest afterwards? Panasonic , Hitachi, LG, Sony etc? Once again this is for 50inch plasma tvs

Dups79

Sony no longer makes plasma so after Pioneer, I'd probably go with Hitachi, Panasonic, Samsung, then LG.  If you really want to save money, look at Vizio, their 50" plasma goes for about $2000 US.

Is 3000:1 vs 4000:1 A huge difference?, can you even tell the diference?, both are Samsung TVsSamurai-Cell

This is a tough one to answer without seeing the TVs side by side.  If I had to take a guess, no, there is not a lot of difference between 3000:1 to 4000:1, at least compared to lower CR like 800:1.  If you're considering two TVs with those respective CRs, I'd consider other things like video ports, refresh rates, warranties, and price, of course.

I just want to thank GalvatronType_R . You have really put my mind at ease. I was annoyed after finding out my TV wasn't 1080p capable. But after reading that there isn't much difference etc and just all the other information you have provided - it has been really helpfull. Thanks!

Your two front speakers should match and be the same brand as your center speaker for a tonal match.  Whatever brand your center is, get the matching front speakers and you should be set.

Out of these, I'd take the Samsung.  It has two big advantages over the Sharp: higher CR (4000:1 vs. 1200:1) and a VGA input (the Sharp doesn't have a VGA input).  Also, don't worry about the extra 1" difference, you won't notice it.

Unless your speaker set has an optical input (most computer speakers don't), you're out of luck.  If it connects via your computer's headphone jack, you could go to Radio Shack and get a HP jack converter to use the 360's red and white analog cables but you won't get true digital sound unless you get a receiver that has a Dolby Digital decoder and at least one optical input.

Samurai-Cell

This one's close, both Yamaha and Onkyo make excellent receivers but if I had to pick, I'd go with the Onkyo.  They have similar specs but the Onkyo has one extra component input for a total of three (good for your 360, Wii, and PS3).  Also, just on a stylistic note, I'm not too crazy about Yamaha's amber colored display; Onkyo uses a standard blue-red display.

Onkyo all the way.  I've always had Onyko and loved every unit I have had.  The extra component thing is nice too :p

whats the deal with HDMI inputs.  I know the ps3 is one of the first things to use HDMI 1.3, that mean I will have to buy a tv with HDMI 1.3 inputs to get the max resolution or do any HDMI inputs on the tv work for any HDMI incoming signal wheter it be 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3?  cus i dont want to buy a LCD tv and then find out like 4 months later a new model will come out with hdmi 1.3 support.

The problem with HDMI is that the standard is incomplete, they're still coming up with new revisions to HDMI.  The latest, 1.3, is backwards compatible with existing HDMI equipped TVs (this is a good thing since we won't see HDMI 1.3 TVs until the middle of next year at the soonest).

So it's your choice whether to wait for HDMI 1.3 TVs before buying but if I were you, there are some great deals out there now and the improvements promised by 1.3 aren't worth the wait.

Hi Galvatron,

I have been reading some of your posts on the forums regarding HDTV setups and you seem to be a bit of a genius!!

I was hoping that you may have the answer to my problem, and was wondering if you could possibly answer my question.

I have recently purchased an LCD HD-Ready TV, but open getting it home, noticed that this TV only has an DVI-I connector on the back. Having purchased the Premium Pack console I only have the RED, GREEN & BLUE HD Connectors that come with the console. If I buy the Xbox 360 VGA Cable, will that plug into the DVI-I slot and allow me to utilise the HD capabilities of the console?

Currently I have this great TV and Gears of War, but I'm having to play it all in Standard Def!!

Please Help

You're not out of luck. Just buy the MS official VGA cable for the 360 and then buy a VGA to DVI converter dongle (first link below) and you're set. Again, not to beat a dead horse but there are plenty of other (more expensive) places to buy this converter but don't be fooled, the one below not only is inexpensive but will fill your needs.

If you want to skip buying the VGA cable altogether, you can buy a component to DVI converter dongle (second link below) and this should work as well. A small warning, I've never seen this converter work in person so your mileage may vary and the safe and recommended route would probably be to get the 360's VGA cable.

That Samsung is not a bad choice at all, 4000:1 CR, 2 HDMI, 2 component, 1 VGA, all for a pretty good price.  One thing I like about Samsungs are that they generally have higher CR than the competition which will most likely give you better picture quality.  Also, re: 720p vs. 1080i. generally speaking, 720p is better for fast moving scenes (action movies, games, sports) will 1080i is better for stills (like anything you'd see on National Geographic).  Some have reported that 1080i is a bit more flickery and unstable than 720p but most of the time, you won't see a difference.  Both are great but whatever sources you use, you should make sure to set them to your TV's native resolution.

Re: and Toshiba, while it has higher resolution than the Samsung and the same about of inputs, there are a few issues.  It has pretty low CR (800:1 and I'd normally recommend looking for a TV with at least 1000:1) and the lower end 1080p Toshiba LCDs don't accept a 1080p signal (in other words, the highest signal it can accept is 1080i).

Thanks for responding. I just saw this 42 inch Sharp at Futureshop it looked nice.  http://www.amazon.com/Sharp-Aquos-LC-42D62U-1080p-HDTV/dp/B000HKLIVI/sr=8-1/qid=1165974960/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-7749122-0596013?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

I have been hearing that 1080p only appears  better than 720p when you have a tv over 50 inches. So would it be worth getting this 42 inch 1080p over the Samsung 720p. About a 1000 dollar difference. I don't want to pay  a grand more for minimal difference.

And Galvatron can these 32 inch samsung Lcds scale 720p to 1080i or vice versa?

Hi Galvatron,

One quick question.

Is this adapter you recommended neccessary? I have been reading the specifications of my TV set and I have noticed the following statement.

"It has a VGA input too, which receives the signal from your PC so you can use it as a TV and a PC monitor. A set of side jacks has a composite A/V input with S-video, a mini headphone jack, and an audio in for using the TV's speakers with your PC."

Does this mean that the VGA cable could plug straight into the DVI-I connector on my LCD TV?

Thanks

I have a 360 and a ps3. I am looking to get a 32 inch Lcd. http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10073625&catid=23244# I am leaning towards this Samsung. It has 2 hdmi inputs and higher contrast ratio than others in the price range. Any help would be appreciated. By the way I have a 30 inch panasonic hdtv right now. What are the advantages of gaming on 720p over the 1080i i am using? How visible is the difference?

How would this http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926HDS0010077731&catid=24558 compare with the 32 inch samsung LCD. This Toshiba is 1080p (800:1 contrast ratio). But it has a very low contrast ratio compared to the samsung Which one would you recommend?

That Sharp is not bad but it is a lot more expensive that the Samsung (and it doesn't have a VGA input).  Re: 1080p, there are only nominal differences between it and 720p/1080i and you're right, usually you have to have a bigger screen (around 50") and you have to sit very close to it to make out the finer details.  If you don't mind spending the extra dough, by all means, get a 1080p TV but don't feel like you're missing out if you go with a 720p TV.

Yes, all the LCDs you're considering can scale 1080i to 720p or 1080p.  The inability to scale is just a problem with older CRT based HDTVs, all recent HDTVs should not have a problem with image scaling.
