I played WoW from beta, but towards the end (earlier this summer), found myself filled with a strange mixture of hate and boredom every time I logged on. It was definitely time to quit. Now that I've quit, I understand that my problem was two-fold:
First, as an MMO, by its very nature WoW is a game you can never really finish. You are a rat on a treadmill, and unless you are one of the players who let their lives be consumed by the game, the carrot is always just out of reach--whether that carrot is new armor or PvP rewards or daily quests (daily? really?) or new raids or new dungeons, there will always be one more thing to do, and at least one player that has better gear, l33t-er mounts, a bigger "sword," etc. Playing WoW is like trying to step on your shadow or grab a moth--the goal is always just out of reach, even if you have it in your hand for a second.
Obviously, never-ending content is the point of any MMO, and I'm not knocking a formula that obviously works (at least for Blizzard). I guess it's just not for me. It's telling that in five years of playing, I never once reached any of the end content. It just took too much time and grind, and I sucked at PvP. Yes, I know, L2p, etc, etc.
Second, I started chafing at the entire concept of the tightly controlled server environment that is necessary for an MMO. In different terms--it's Blizzard's world, and you only live in it. There are strict limits to what you can do (even more specifically, what your class and race can do), where you can go, how you get there, what you can do once you get there, and how you can go about doing it. Again, I understand that this is necessary to keep the game problem-free for everyone, but after a while, it got under my skin. I didn't like the feeling that there were GMs lurking somewhere in ether, making sure I played nicely with everyone, or that a toon that I spent countless hours improving could be nerfed with a single developer mouse click.I found release by going back to shooters and sandbox games and just blowing everything the f*ck up in one big fireball and laughing manically like a mad scientist. Oh, it was sweet. :-)
