The words "MMO" and "MUST PLAY" do not belong together in the same sentence.

Well my bro gave me his acct to try it out and its pretty good. The only thing that turns me off so far is

SLOW combat (Gets better later on, but it turns into a click/button mashing fest)

Artwork for WAR is extremely dull (They don't have much of a color scheme)

My Marauder looks like a rainbow barbarian...

Don't worry about the flaws much since they could be overlooked by PvP and the PQs...

PS - Whoever put in the "Tome of Knowledge" should get a medal!!

[QUOTE="Swiftstrike5"]I'll play it when there's a trail. Until then, I don't plan on wasting $80 to try a game. I am very reluctant to even pay monthly for a game I've already paid for (if it was free to download the game I wouldn't be so picky).comstrikeiscool

You pay for it because it is online with thousands and thousands and thousands of players on one server, do you really expect it to be free? If it was an offline game, sure. You do realize you play on a server which has to be maintained, right?

I don't expect it to be free (I don't think I said that). I said, I wish they would have the game be a free download and then you'd pay a monthly fee after that (I don't think a paper weight should cost $50). I highly doubt it takes $15 a month from "thousands and thousands and thousands of players" to maintain a few servers.

I sure as hell don't want to waste $80 on a game I won't enjoy.

You're not paying for the case. You're paying for the cd key just like any other game. Of course it doesn't take $15 a month, they are a business. That's like saying a bottled water should be free because you can get it from your sink. Servers for your information cost minimum $100,000 per month and good ones will run upwards at $500,000. Times that by 20 or so servers and you do the math.

The CD key is worthless without the monthly payment, not like every other game. If I pay $15, I should be able to download the game for free. If I don't pay the $15 then I can't download the game so they don't lose money. If I stop paying then all they lost was a couple of hours of bandwidth (which I paid $15 for) and for a $500000 server, that should be nothing.

I'm saying if I pay monthly for the water then the bottle they reuse should be free. The bottle is worthless without the water, just like the game is worthless without the monthly fee.

BF2 servers are $100 for 64 players (cost evens out to about a $1 per extra person at 50ish). That's $10000 for 6400 players (assuming same ratio). 6400 players paying $15 is $96000. That's a 960% profit. I know BF2 servers aren't as good as MMO's, but 10x more is drastic.

I was going to try WAR but then decided that it's not different enough from the dozen fantasy MMORPGs out there.

I'm happily playing Tabula Rasa now, it was really a breath of fresh air for me.

At this point in time it looks like I'll be canceling my WoW account for WAR. It's freakin' awesome and I'm only rank 11. I know a lot of people claim that the latest "amazing rpg" (*cough*ageofconan*cough*) doesn't have grind when it blatantly does, but seriously, there is no grind in WAR. The grind that is there is so fun and painless you don't even notice it. You can fill a third of your Influence bar in the time it takes to do a solo Burning Crusade quest in WoW, and unlike the Burning Crusade, the quests are incredibly fun. It reeks of personality as well, something WoW really fails with. I don't know how Blizzard ripped off so many of Warhammer's races and made them so boring, but they did. Greenskins>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>orcs.

Oh, and I got my first taste of RvR last night.

HOLY KOI CARP, WAS IT GOOD.

MegaPigeon

Blizzard didn't exactly rip off the races from Warhammer. There are plenty of "Orcs" in fantasty that they could have pulled from. Hell, D&D had orcs (and a monstrous god named "Orcus") long before either. And of course, Tolkien had the Orcs as well, before any of these...

Obviously those races existed long before Warhammer, but they never really had any specific image. In literature it's pretty much up to the reader how everything looks. There just happens to be a startling similarity between Warhammer races and Warcraft races. This was pretty obvious when Warhammer Online was first shown and every Warcraft fanboy thought the designs ripped of Warcraft. When you bring Starcraft into the matter it's pretty obvious Blizzard get a lot of their ideas and designs from Games Workshop, only they suck all of the personality and character out of them in the process.

And Games Workshop got a lot of their ideas from Heinlein. It's pretty worthless arguing about which company has the most original ideas when they all borrow things from other people.

I don't play MMOs, but isn't this how many new MMOs start? OMG new MMO, something fresh, different than WoW, 1 month later, nobody renews their subs, people say it sucks and has no end content.

Hey I'm just speculating :P

PC360Wii

I can picture WAR's end game being pretty bad.... repeating the same push over and over again the noveltyof ransacking an enemy city will fade quickly.

Then again, it's never stopped countless people raid constantly in WoW with the only reward being gear that will help you raid even more.

the MMO Formula

RK-Mara

Isn't that the thing that turns people off when it comes to MMOs? You can bet that after a decade of MMOs, I'm tired of the same old EverQuest formula.

This. People can claim "But it's nothing like WoW" all they want, it's still the EQ formula. Pick a **** quest, level up, raid (PvE or PvP). Sure, different games change up the formula some, but what ever happened to the UO formula? You can't realisitically claim WAR is THAT much different than WoW. In fact, it's pretty much WoW with RvR. AoC is more of a departure from the WoW formula. It's just too bad Funcom totally dropped the ball. However, even AoC is too much like WoW.

I want something TOTALLY different, that is skill based like UO, and that promotes more socializing and things to do and interact with the world other than Raiding and Leveling Up.

I know the gameplay isn't similar to WoW, but I have to admit that after I saw some Youtube videos, they look identical. It's funny, really. Still - I'm going to avoid the game because I have a feeling that in the end it's the same MMO schtick. GodLovesDead

Actually it is. The only thing that is different is the PvP. Other than that, plays exactly like WoW.

Wow, what a surprise, some of the biggest WoW/Blizzard fanboys bashing WAR in this thread. Who would have thunk it? Personally, I'm glad the Blizzard shills don't like this game. I can't imagine playing a game filled with that kind of dross.

Phenom316

How is it sad (Have you seen the picture of blizzards gold vault?)? I BLATANTLY said, I don't want to purchase a game that forces me to buy the game and pay the monthly fee (it should be one or the other IMO). If other people want to do it, so what? I'm getting bashed for thinking something should be free, but by all means, go play your $80 game for 2 months. For $80, I got Crysis Warhead, Company Of Heroes Gold Edition, Silent Hunter 3, and Audiosurf. I pesonally think the later is a better value.

This game does not bring anything new or interesting at all. I couldn't even finish beta I was so bored. Terrible PvE, and the "super fantastic" RvR has been done before in better ways. It is a grind, it is Kill X for X, it is... 6 months from finished.

Short and sweet, not a great game.

Awesome man. I'll be looking forward to it.

So, I've played to lvl 6 as a high elf archmage. Here are my first impressions:

The artwork in this game is pretty good. It's nice to look at. It ranks among the better MMOs out there...not the best of any pc game...just talking MMOs; as such, it's competitive.

The community is cool, so far, in that there are plenty of friendly groups to join in combat with...without having to join a guild. This helps complete quests fairly easy.

The player versus region, or region versus region war scenarios are fun...typical of capture the flag rallies found in many multiplayer games, these allow you to build reputation/renown points fairly quickly if you're willing to take some risks. As a mage, it's kind of nice to distance yourself and just aim long disance spells at enemies.

One really nice thing about this game is the Tome of Knowledge interface...it consolidates all of your quests and history in one source that is very easy to navigate. Another cool thing about it: there is actually a readable storyline for your character in this game...so, while following your typical "kill this, fetch that" routine found in all MMOs, this game distinguishes itself in that it actually has somewhat of a storyline to follow...there are chapters in this game. Again, this is compared to other MMOs. Don't expect depth anywhere near as thoughtful as Torment or Baldur's Gate.

My one gripe of this game is that the combat is not much fun. It may be the line drawn in the sand for me. Is it worse than other MMOs I've tried? Well, no. It's just more of the same, "click on enemy and negotiate with different attacks using your numerical keys".

This game was an impulse buy for me. It's raining where I live, and I just felt like holing up for a while and playing something new. My advice is that you wait for the price to drop and/or for the distributors to offer a demo or free trial. I'm going to keep playing for a month. I may stick with it, or I may not. Anyway, I'm usually fairly discreet with my game purchases. This is an exception for me. Save your money unless you're are a complete MMO or Warhammer lover...

Nomatter who you are, aslong as you enjoy PC games, you should definately try out this game.

There are quite alot of people who arent a fan of the MMO genre, becuase MMO and Mindless Grind coexist. I, and many people who have played the game to a quite high level can tell you that this game has no grind. Seriously, there isnt :o. You guys should definately give this game a try, even if its your first MMO, its newbie friendly and is quite frankly by far the greatest MMO available.

To people turned off the genre because of World Of Warcraft. Asides from the controls, and the MMO Formula, the games are nothing alike.

O yes, and to the people thinking Warhammer Online is a WoW clone, you are SADLY mistaken. The Warhammer fantasy universe is much older then the Warcrafts. This game is unique, and NOT world of warcraft in the slightest.

And lastly, to fellow MMO fans. This game is everything you have loved about MMOs in the past, with everything youv dreamed about, and some more! Trust me guys, you will absolutely LOVE it. The RvR. The unique, detailed, brutal cla$$es. The PQs. The Lairs. The RvR. The Dungeons. The RvR. The Quests. The RvR. The Fantasy Universe. The Monsters. The RvR. The Bosses. And just soooo much more (yes, i know i said RvR 4 times :D). The game is incredibly fun.

Bottom line, nomatter who you are, be it someone who has never played an MMO before, someone who hates the genre or a veteran. Warhammer Online is thee game to play!

O yah, and if ur bored, check out the gamespot discussion / gameplay video , Warhammer CG Trailer , amonst others :)

Hope to see you on the battlefield. WAAARG.

Phenom316

I played in the beta... it was ok. Nothing to get excited over.

Ha, hypocrite? I've never liked WoW so my opinion has very little to do with my liking WAR. I just get a little tired of all the WoW fans raging on every other MMORPG as something that's inferior or a "clone" of their beloved WoW. Oh, and I'm not sure what my Sig. has to do with anything. I've always thought Blizzard made mediocre McGames and WoW isn't any different, so what? Is your Interwebz-ego some how threatened by my opinion? Grow up.

Thanks for the Warhammer impression man. Just what the doctor ordered. An honest opinion of WAR. I think I'll wait for a trial version. I'm not too excited about putting down $40-50 for something I might not like, when there are tons of games out there that I want to buy right now. Thanks again man.

[QUOTE="StrawberryHill"]I bought this game today and am installing as I type. Looking forward to this. I hope I'm not disappointed.Elann2008

You were just deciding on it a few hours ago, lol. Wow, nice. I hope you like it! Let us know how it goes!

Yeah, it's a rainy day here...so, I made an impulse purchase. I'll start playing it in a little while and post my first impressions later. :)

Rainy day huh? Time to pull out the hot cocoa.

No problem. Take care, friend.

lol settle down you hypocritical ****, don't get all butt hurt now.

It's not like you rabid WAR fans (haha, look at your sig) weren't so determined to take pot shots at WoW and its players whenever talking about WAR.

Don't think I love WoW and hate WAR, I just hate the lies and cheap shots that you use to sing praises for your game and put the other down.-wildflower-

Grow up.

You're entitled to your opinion. Its wrong though.

I am loving this game. Better than WoW imo. Loads better. The servers are very well populated already, the public quests are great and the RvR simply amazing.

Like the TC said, this game could easily appeal to those who didn't like wow or don't normally like mmo's. You could play the game and level through RvR alone.

The achievments in the game are also highly addictive lol. Really, this is goty for me.

There are plenty of other titles that have yet to come out this year, that's a pretty bold statement.

lol i know what you mean. I do think you could play WAR for limited periods and still enjoy it. I don't get time to play games much these days but am having a blast on WAR. Although im still undecided on what class to play, kinda have a few on the go.

WAAARG.

Phenom316

1. Its not newbie friendly. I have play just about every mmo I can download, and there is so much stuff going on with WAR that it is offputting.

  • you have scenarios, campaigns, skirmishes, battlefields and all of these words are ambiguous and aren't explained very well in the game.
  • With all of these things, there is nothing to tell you what they are or how you join them. There was a point in a game where i was
  • I have to keep checking that dumb accept button because the eula keeps poping up each time i load the game
  • THe game takes forever to load
  • The animation and game in general is glitchy. I joined a low population server and it is still glitchy. Up against a fence? get ready to not be able to jump over it unless you spam the jump key.
  • What the hell is area influence, Renown, etc.
  • Why am I getting abilities and not able to use them: Im Rank 4 and i have Eagle's Flight but i don't have improved balance...wth is up with that. Do i need to go somewhere to get this?
  • THe graphics aren't that good, and I would venture to bet that the models have aless poly count than wow.
  • It pretty much is wow. They have all the same aspects and ideas of wow except they call it different. THe UI is the same pretty much. The gear is colored the same (green, blue, purple, white, grey). The money is all the same just called different (instead of copper you have brass)
  • I stumbled in on a public quest and did it solo by just running around and killing the same guys over and over and over. The DEFINITION of a grind.
  • The bounding box collision sucks Ba!!$. There are times when i will try to run past a fence and will clearly be out of its way and the game still decides to stop me from moving.
  • The environment is completely boring...There are no butterflys, birds, squirrels, deer, snakes, etc....I realize that this environment is not meant for something like this but still. All the enemies just sit in one place (I have only gotten to rank 4 so my experience from there) and they don't do anything special at all.
  • The game just seems unpolished and unresponsive.
This is not a bad game but it is not all you crack it up to be.

^^ i agree with all his points, I think WAR just lacks presentation, but those who have given the game time seem to be enjoying it very much.. it just takes a bit to get into.

just to add more to the list:

  • Loading times take forever...it has to load the interface then the game map.
  • I keep getting kicked from the loading screen back to character selection. I don't get a reason why, it just happens. Is the game broken now, are the servers full (this shouldn't be considering the population was low and it is mid-day), are they doing maintenance on the server? They don't say
  • Lack of environment feeling like it is real. Just an EXAMPLE: in wow the trees moved and grass
  • Half the tips that show up are tipping me that i should read the tips more often. What else am i going to do while waiting forever for the game to load. And i don't need to be tipped off to reading the tips more because obviously if im reading the tips then I wouldn't need to be tipped off. That is like a commercial on TV saying you should watch more commercials.

More to come, because i can't even get in the game.

You're rank 4 and you act like you are supposed to know everything. Rank 4 can be achieved in under an hour... You say the game is just like wow, yet you don't know what scenarios, campaigns and battlefields are. If you played the game up to rank 4 you would know that a scenario is first presented to you through a quest. A campaign is what you're playing...see this link for information and a battlefield is where you take over keeps and battlefield objectives. Being that you're rank 4 obviously you need to play a bit more. Rank 4 doesn' take long to get. If you haven't figured out what influence and renown are by at least rank 10 then you really need to get a clue man...no one is going to hold your hand. In that public quest you then proceeded to kill the champion on your own too I bet...

The words "MMO" and "MUST PLAY" do not belong together in the same sentence. F1_2004

This mang is correct.

Lol everything u just said was horribly untrue, you could say u hate the game and thats cool, but u talked about all the best things of the game and slammed it with BS. And u know nothing about it, some of the questions u asked prove how u played this game for 20 minutes. Sad, sad. Reminds me of the lemmings telling me how PC gaming is the worst.

Lol im suprised at the amount of people hating on this game without playing (im not talking abou the guy i quoted). It seems that same WoW fans are threatened by this game, and wanna lash out by bashing it. IMO, this game is phenomenal, and any MMO fan, anyone who wants to be brought into the genre or any MMO haters should try it out :D
