Hey everyone! I have just installed gta iv on my comp a few days ago and once the game starts, I get about 3-5 fps on the absolute lowest settings possible. Is this normal because this is ridiculous I knew my frame rates wouldn't be the best but I didn't expect It to be 5 or something. I know a few people who have played the game with 20 fps on a Pentium 4 yet I have an i3. Shouldn't Gta IV be able to run on these specs: Intel i3 @2.40 ghz 3gb Ram Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5450 1gb Windows 7 Professional I've done everything I can like updating drivers and everything but the fps is still 5. Does anyone know what's wrong?

Run a Malware scan. If you find malware, uninstall GTA IV, and reinstall the game.

No I don't think It happens in most of my games but in Gta sa I get fps stuttering it sometimes goes up to 50 and then down to 30 and 20 back to 40 then 50 and In Fallout 3 It lags when I use vats and I get about 20-30 fps in normal gameplay. This is a bit silly cause I have a Pentium 4 on another comp and I get more fps and no stuttering/lag on those games on highest settings.

It's because GTA 4 is a horrible port, as far as I'm aware. From what I'm hearing it's got bad performance on many different systems.

Ran fine on mine though. Not sure what I did to fix it.

Yeah It isn't the best Graphics Card but I've checked on YouTube and people have played Gta iv with that card with no problems and I assumed that It wasn't the card that was causing the problem.

If memory servers me right, Any Radeon card below a 57XX is not really considered a gaming card.

If the HDD is failing (bad clusters and the such), it leads to slow framerates in parts.... and specially jumping/sluttering. Run a chkdsk /R and test game again...

The 8800GTX is much better than a 5450. The 5450 is not a 3D gaming card. It's a very low-end laptop card.

Nobody on youtube is playing at a decent FPS with that card while recording the video.

You also have to remember, 10-15 FPS on youtube is going to look far more playable than 10-15 FPS while playing. Video always looks smoother.

I had some problems with GTA IV as well. My comp is an 2.93 i7 with 8gb ram and 1gb ATI 5670 card and I was severely disappointed with the frame rate. I couldn't run it on High more than 25ish and can run it on Medium at about 30fps. I think that it is just poorly designed, because I definitely get better results out of higher end games.

That guy is running a desktop model of the 5450, you are running on the mobile laptop version, that's the reason why your fps isn't matching up. There is nothing you can do about this.

First of all GTA 4 for the PC was developed by a bunch of high school students. Even my high end computer cant run it maxed out. And Im going to be honest. Your laptop is not meant for gaming. Im assuming its a laptop because you said Mobility 5450. The desktop 5450 is bad enough for gaming as it is. If thats true, then your CPU is also not as fast as a desktop i3. Should have done your homework man. GTA 4 needs some real horsepower.

Thanks but is there nothing I can do to get at least 15 fps. Even if I get a new graphics card would still get 5 fps because my friend has an i3 on a laptop except with more ram and a better graphics card and they still get good frame rates.

Theres nothing you can do. And you cant upgrade the GPU of your laptop. Youre stuck with the performance you have and thats that. Even if you did manage to get 15 fps, the game would still be completely unplayable.

And I doubt your friend has good framerates. No i3 laptop can run GTA 4 at an enjoyable framerate. Im going to be honest with you. Give up with this game.

Well, I had to play the game with worse graphics than the 360 version on my 8800GTX in order to get a good framerate. So, if you don't have a powerful PC, I wouldn't bother with the horrible PC version of GTAIV.

GTA IV was and still is a rubbish port that is horribly optimised. I'm not surprised about having a low framerate. My computer won't even let me try to run the game at high settings.

Before giving up, try updating your GTA, you said it's box retail, so maybe it's still version 1.0.

Try to apply patch 1.0.4.0. And see if it's better.

The latest patches make the game heavily gpu dependant, so it wouldn't be good for you.

If patch 1.0.4.0 doesn't help you, there is not much else you can do.

@Nick3306 I tried playing at the lowest resolution the fps has gone up a bit now up to about 10 but that's still not good enough I'm still not giving up because I've seen tonnes of people play Gta IV on a Laptop with stable frame rates with an i3 some people have the exact sames specs as me except a different graphics card and they get stable fps so I will not give up!

I've updated Gta iv to 1.0.4.0 and I now get 15-20 fps on lowest settings which is a huge improvement but would I gain a bit more If I changed graphics card because the lowest resolution looks terrible with my graphics card.

You should keep trying to change video settings, maybe you can make the graphics a little better, but keep shadows res. to a minimum, or turned off.

BTW, there's a gta portal that may help you. They have a specific forum for performance tips. www.gtanet.com

good luck =)
