i don't play a huge number of racing games on any platform, but the two i played this year and thought were pretty good were GRID and Burnout: Paradise. Grid is an excellent balance between driving sim and arcade game, but burnout is all arcade. both are fun though.

I liked the look of GRID but even after hours of testing and tweaking the stearing and breaking controls I could never get them right...I always had either full steering or no steering and full breaking or no breaking with not a lot inbetween. I thought the car control was horrible, shame really.

So my favourite racer is Burnout Paradise. I prefer over the top fun to frustrating realism.

Arcade racing (accessible, simplified):
Trackmania, Race Driver GRID

Driving simulators (challenging, highly accurate and unforgivingly realistic):
GTR2, RACE 07

Try LFS, it's totally a sim race game in which you can't control the car well unless you have a steering wheel

For a serious simluator, I advice GTR Legends. For a neat balance between realism and simulation, it's definitely GRID. And if you want over-the-top fun and devastating, go for Burnout Paradise, it's your best bet.

When I think PC racing... I think simulation, not really arcade type. GTR/GTR2/Evolution/Race07 are about the only I know of that aren't over 8 years old....

I've tried GTR 2 and, just like any sim, it takes a significant amount of work to play and get good at. I found GRID to be a great combination of simplified arcade racing and a taste of racing simulation, I'd go with that unless you're big into cars.

The only racing games I can think of that I had the most fun with on the PC are pretty much Flatout...can't think of any others. I'm not into the whole racing games thing on the PC though.

Agree with that PC driving games for Sims, 360/PS3 for Arcade racers, I always found Codemasters physics have sucked since Colin McRae Rally 2 but are really enjoyable on consoles. In answer to your question though it depends on what you want, if you have a decent steering wheel then you can't beat the sims listed in Threesixtyci's post. I would add Richard Burns Rally, GT Legends and rFactor to his list. All of these games have a massive amount of free and excellent mods available online.

If you don't have a steering wheel or want arcade style games I would avoid any of the games above.

If it's not made by SimBin it's a pile of doodie. On that note: GTR 2, GTR Legends (which typically is included with the former title), GTREvolution, Race07 (which typically is included with the former title), STCC, future titles from them such as the upcoming RaceOn

In my opinion, I love the last N. American release of EA Sports F1 Challenge (2002 season I think?). It is very realistic, plus there are add-ons/mods available that update each seasons driver lineup, teams, track (new ones and changes), plus car changes too. Playing this game with a wheel is awesome!

Grid is from a completely different league than GTR or rFactor, with the latter being full-scale simulators. Grid, on the other hand, keeps a balance between sim and arcade, bending more to the latter. They can be compared with the same success you'll get by comparing Need for Speed and Gran Turismo.

Wow, I can't believe that nobody has mentioned Rfactor.

Rfactor is a PC only title - and it's easily the best PC racer I've ever played. The formula one campaigns are easily the best I've ever seen.

Me me me.... I mentioned it first so there :P

Totally agree with you on rFactor, the new rFactor 2 looks fantastic but probably won't be out for years :-(

Worth saying that rFactor, GTR, GT Legends, GTR2, STCC, Race, Race 07 GTR, GTR Evolution and F1 Challenge 99-02 (which the other poster alluded to) are all using the same physics and game engine made by ISI. The only pity is that the Xbox 360 game Race Pro also written by SimBim has been absolutely slated. Not sure if this is because it is rubbish or more likely as is nearly always the case, the journos who write reviews for driving games play it for 5 minutes keep spinning off (because they are useless) and then say this game is pants and give it 20%.

I recommend TrackMania Nations Forever, its free and super fun. Other racers would be Burnout Paradise, Grid, NFS Most Wanted, and NFS Underground 1 and 2. I'm not much of a sim guy as I cant afford a steering wheel right now, but I have played GTR2 and GTR Evolution, both of which are fun games too if you like sim racers.

All-in-all, Zoom Zoom, racing 4 life! :P

Fuel, which will be released in two weeks... 'might'... be a decent game. We'll have to wait and see of course. That's going to be a tough one for me if there's no demo. The reviews will be very important in helping me to decide. I've got to save up for The Sims 3, so it'll be tough.

I use the pc for sim racing. For single player, it is GTR 2 or GTR evolution. For online, it is Rfactor. If you dont know already, rfactor is online only. They do have a single player option, but it is horrible. The AI sucks. This game was not developed for single player. It was meant for online. There are tons and tons of free mods out there for any car style you can think of. But, be warned, the online community is very good, and they have little patience for bad drivers.
