World of Warcraft is the most expensive, casual orientented MMO at the moment featuring raiding for no purpose in the long run. PvP is also exploited, abused to the limit with lots of win trading and Blizzard does nothing to address the issue. But yea the era of WOW is done, which has its pros and cons.
[QUOTE="FelipeInside"]Did anyone say Guild Wars 2? Doesn't get much love on these forums but I'm having a blast. Coming from someone who's played a dozen MMO's the past 9 years it's a matter of personal opinion and what you want out of an MMO.
Ragnarok 2 just came out and it's F2P, haven't tried it out yet so I can't give any opinion on it.
Tera went full F2P a few months ago, I'd say it's one of the best F2P MMO's out there.
Wildstar is in beta and probably looks like the most promising MMO to be released in awhile.
There's a lot of MMO's out there that are F2P and sub based, find what appeals to you and make sure that the MMO's you're interested in have a decent player base since playing a game with a low population can be boring and tedious.

Pretty much this.
I am glad I got out of that endless raid rat race when I did. Not being Skinner Box Online is one of the things I thought GW2 did right.

[QUOTE="FelipeInside"] What's so bad about GW2's End Game? I receive emails every month with new content added.
There's no endgame in GW2. "Endgame" to those that think there's endgame in GW2 is "whatever you make of it." Technically, there is none. After you hit level 80, even on one toon, you already know what to expect in terms of PVE content. I've made myself clear how I felt about RvRvR, which is a aoe spam fest. I tried getting back into GW2 after several months and I can't stand it. I'm happy for those that are enjoying the game. I'm not telling them to F' off because they like it. I'm not one of those people that hate on others because they like something but don't burn me at the stake for having in opinion about it. So what's all that content I keep getting updates on? For example now it's Flame and Frost: Retribution (you can check it on the official page) I think it's really cool of Arena.net to constantly bring updates to their gamer/fan base. It's really admirable of them. And undoubtedly, it's probably the best free to play game out on the market in terms of quality. Personally, I just don't find what is at "endgame" worthwhile. The Flame and Frost update brings a new dungeon, new WvW updates and Guild activities. Not a personal fan of the dungeons in the game. I'm prefer more World of Warcraft gameplay and progression. I know, I'm from the darkside! At least I gave Guild Wars 2 a good run, going on by how much I enjoyed Guild Wars 1, I don't have any regret.Nobody cares because after the leveling process the game a shallow pit of nothingness.... and is now common perception because its reality.[QUOTE="MBirdy88"][QUOTE="FelipeInside"]Did anyone say Guild Wars 2? I understand I loved the journey ... but the journey lasted me less than a week as a season'd MMO player.... and no I wasn't rushing, I completed every zone as i went along, and did loads of side things..... but you hit 80 and alot of it becomes trivial. End-game mentallity is currently the BEST solution because it gives the players a slow-paced progression based on difficulty/effort. Casuals will not go back to the days of Final Fantasy 11 where the entire journey was a difficult struggle...... I think the current WoW onwards generation of MMORPG "mainstream gamers" are completely selfish in this respect, they claim that they spend the same money so they should be rewarded the same as coordinated guilds and really good players.... im sorry this does not reflect any sporting/competitive/game activity in real life why would it here? All the GW2 and TESO defenders saying "GOOD RAIDS SUCK WHY SHOULD I TEAM AND DO DUNGEONS TO SEE STUFF?" .... so selfish ..... and is largely why both games' will sufffer eachothers problems. gw2 just lacks depth in many many areas to appeal to a different crowd.... and by the looks of things ironically a smaller cloud than even the wow-clones.... which are more successful in a few cases.[QUOTE="FelipeInside"]
[QUOTE="MBirdy88"] See that is not a plus to me, im glad FFXIV is having a subscription fee, I cannot think of an MMO without one that has been udpated or as quality as sub counterparts ( in successful situations ).... GW2 is a prime example....... their patches are nothing special.... and it will only get worse.

+1.Why do people keep suggesting Eve? As a game it is atrocious. Â Sure if you are like a very busy person who can literally only play for minutes a month or something like that, it could be an enjoyable experience, but if you actually want to "play" a "game" then look elsewhere. Â Eve is just afkville. Â Training skills? Right click > AFK. Â Mining? Right click > AFK. Â Missions? Right click > Warp to Destination > Right Click > Target > AFK.
Actually doing a skill doesn't raise it, experience means nothing. Â You literally just open the skill book, select a skill, and wait a predetermined amount of REAL TIME for the skill to train... Which quickly becomes several days per skill (to weeks even for advanced skills like new ship or weapon classes).
Sure the game has UNLIMITED freedom... You can do anything in it, you can make a Caldari and then join a Gallente corporation in Gallente space even though they are at war (think of it as the ability to be a blood elf in an alliance guild in WoW for perspective), you have the complete freedom to choose that... You can specialize in any ship type... You can be a Minmatar rocking Caldari ships in a Gallente corporation like I was... Its up to you. Â But the complete lack of variety and especially the real life training times ruin it. Â Missions, despite having large back stories given by they people, are all the same, that you just spam for money over and over.
And just those real time trainings. Â People always say "ohhhh join a corp and they will help and blah blah blah" I did join a corp, a fairly large and complex one... They provided free ships, skillbooks, etc... I told them I wanted to specialize in missile weapon based caldari ships (since I like their style above all others), the guy says not a problem... Links a ship build/fitting to me and tells me that's what I should strive for (a pretty middle of the line, medium build ship for medium level players..) Â It says to equip all the things in the build will require 79 days (79 real days) of training time. Â And that is where the game is sh-t. Â I could log in one time per day, for 1 minute, for 79 days to update my skillbook or 8 hours a day, everyday, to spam missions/pvp, etc... Doesn't matter how much time you invest in your character, all the training is is real time and nothing short of implants which give minor boosts to it increase the speed at which they train, which is ridiculous.

Its the selfish "casual" mentallity that I have mentioned above in my rant..... The kind of gamers you find on the GW2 forum now are like "Why should people who have organised teams and beat difficult raid content be rewarded and I shouldn't for soloing the same old mobs I have been for the rest of the game? IM GLAD RAIDS DONT EXIST" .... honestly, take one look at any guild wars 2 or teso related forum and you have these people that are obsessed with raiders being "elitest no life horrible snobs" ....if gear didn't matter to them, if competitive spirit didnt matter to them, and if they don't like raids..... then they COULD simply ignore them and be done with the game.
But for some reason if a layer beyond their reach exists .... they have an entitlement tantrum.
Â
hence why htere is practically nothing of substance in GW2 and I picture the same outcome for TESO .... fun action games with *some* multiplayer but as MMO's next to no social/challenge/competitive features.

+1.While Arenanet did a good job asking themselves "Is this feature a commonplace in the AAA mmo industry?", they did not do a good job asking themselves "Is this fun?" and "Will this keep people engaged in the game?".
They took out a lot of standard conventions and what they replaced them with werent all that good.
That said, the dungeon they added is supposed to be pretty good, as in Arenanet is finally starting to understand how to design dungeons around the system they created. Too bad all that work will be removed in less than 2 weeks.
Living story is one of the worst concepts I have seen for an mmo. Right behind gender locking (males will be forced to play as males and vice versa), beginner classes which only really made sense in some SRPGs and gender exclusive gear.

That's true. An MMO can be very to extremely challenging and have more than enough content for casual MMO gamers. For example, World of Warcraft allowed both crowds to do that. You can raid for a few hours, and then turn around and do something casual like run around, go fish, work on professions, help guidies do quests. Whatever it may be. But the important thing was that it never ruled out either "types" of gamers.
I was playing Neverwinter MMO for a a few hours, and I nicely asked in chat if anyone knew any good links to any available armors or armor sets in the game.. And the typical response was: "You're playing this game for gear?"
So I responded back and said: "Well, not just for gear, but gear and progression is just as important as everything else." See, I don't understand that mentality. I'm sure more than 50% of the players play for good gameplay and gear. They want to feel rewarded and decor their avatar/character. Anyone that disagrees are partially lying. I mean, "hello!" you're playing an MMO with microtransactions... You can buy a friggin mount with your real money.
I think that a high quality MMO is deep enough to provide numerous hours of gameplay and content for both hardcore and casual crowds. Â To cater to one, whether it be a pve or pvp-centric MMO, isn't a really good idea. Â ONLY, with the exception if they announced it as a full-on PVP game, like DAoC.

I hated it because of some really bad ideas that unfortunately spread through other korean mmos for a while. Gender exclusive armor, beginner classes and the fact that you were forced to play the gender based on your real life gender (to add salt to the wound, some classes were exclusive to one gender, so males could never legally try the dancer class for instance).

Gender exclusive armor has got to be one of the dumbest ideas in MMOs. xDRagnarok Onilne was just a massive compilation of bad ideas, and unfortunately these bad ideas stuck onto the genre for a while. I suspect that it influenced a lot of Korean mmos and they too picked up a lot of these bad habits from RO. Thankfully all of the things I have listed now are pretty much non-existant in modern Korean mmorpgs, but the damage has been done.

As for the topic itself
Ragnarok Online 2 was released a few days ago with top notch graphics
Â
Completely original UI and gameplay mechanics
And it is totally not Pay to Win at all
Here is a glowing review the game had
Maroxad
Â
Gameplay aside; The placement of the UI is like the placement of interior inside a car. Originality has no place in UI, it's all about userfriendliness. Placing the UI differently just to be original is just silly. You don't just start moving around the steering wheel or the pedals in a car, they are placed in the same spots in every car for a reason. Same thing here really, it's comfortable and pretty much a standard to have the chat in the lower left corner, why would they change it just to be different?
If I went to a MMO that tried to be original with the placement of the UI, I'd instantly go "ok how do I move these...?".
Gameplay is obviously a completely different matter but the point is that I always get rather irritated when I see people claiming how a mmorpg is "WoW"-ish and then refer to the placement of the UI objects. If there is one thing that WoW did good, is the UI. I remember all these mmorpgs that came after that were total WoW ripoffs gameplay wise but lacked the customization of the UI that WoW had. In WoW you could heal by hovering the mouse over a portrait, this is a great UI functionality. Difficulty wise it doesn't change anything but it's very comfortable but when this was mentioned in SWTOR people went all crazy about how this was for casual ez-mode WoWers. Ok now I am straying off path but damn the WoW UI is great and if there is one thing these mmorpg actually should copy, it's the UI and customization.
/rant
^Yeah, healing over a portrait is important for gameplay, imo. That's what I used a lot. Man, I missed the days on my Paladin in World of Warcraft. I was always #1 or 2 on the healing charts. I loved playing Paladin. Damn, I wish I never gave away my account. :-(Elann2008
