Generally speaking a GPU is more important than CPU.
But obviously you need to have a balance between them two. Otherwise there will be a bottleneck.
For example you can't use a Pentium 4 with a GPU that is GTX 590.
You won't get full use out of the GTX 590 with a P4 for example.
However, if you have a Core i7 Extreme Processor and you put any £50 card then again you won't have an enjoyable gaming experience.
Basically you can have the greatest processor in the world, but if your graphics card is crap, what's the point? It's as if you didn't upgrade a thing. If gaming is in your mind then having a powerful graphics card is generally more important.
As long as your processor is not as outdated as a Pentium 4 then you shouldn't really worry about your CPU.
Nowadays even if your CPU is slightly outdated with a bit of overclocking you can make it look modern again.:D But ofcourse that's only helpful for processors that aren't too old.
Lets say a Q6600 its 3 years old. But if you overclock it to 3.5 GHz+ from 2.4 GHz it will do you good for pretty much all of your PC games.
The graphics card is something you'll want to look forward if you want to run most of your games smoothly without any frame rate drops.
