GW2 is not a mmo. or... If GW1/2 is a mmo then diablo 1,2, warcraft3, warcraft 2... any game with a "lobby" is a mmo.

Anyway they advertise it as "free" and "mmo" because they want more people to buy it. But it still dont make GW1 or GW2 a mmo.

How is it different from World of Warcraft? MMO does not = persistant world... that is logic made by elitest that want games like WoW to feel special. All people do in WoW once level capped is stand around in ogrimmar touching themselves over thier gear, other than that PvP and PVE is all instances.... just like Guild Wars, both have 3D lobbies.... one just more so than the other. Thats hte nature of theme park mmos.

If Blizzard went out and released a patch for... Diablo 2... Where there was a huge town instead of a chat room. And then said its a mmo. Would you say its a mmo?? Also some people seem to say that there are lots of mmo fps games where you join a game from a lobby. Im sorry thats not a mmo. It would be like calling Counter strike a mmo. Yet the devs (and some players) call these games "MMO"? Why is that? Its simple! Marketing. You want a share of the MMO market by saying "this game is free" or "We can now take a monthly fee for a multiplayer game". Just because a dev say its mmo dont mean its a mmo. I remember when my friend said "GW is a MMO just like WOW BUT FREE!!!" And i was like *roll eyes*... oh well...

Having played MMOs for nearly 10 years now I have to say it seems to be a very difficult balance to strike between accessibility and making the game challenging/interesting. I personally liked the play-style of AO better than WoW (can move in combat, more interesting environments, better class mechanics) but hated the very heavy death penalties especially with no way to resurrect fallen allies and steep leveling curve to begin with. I would much prefer a game that struck a middle ground between WoW and the old guard of AO, EQ, and UO, rather than another WoW clone with a different story. Warhammer had promise, but it had a number of it's own problems. GW2 seems like it might fit the bill so long as they don't over instance it, only time will tell.

LOL may I know what MMOs were there at the time WOW came out? Then MMOs were played by a few people and played very differently from WOW. WOW wasnt sucessful immediatly might I add; it used to be a very hardcore game. Then they made it so accesible than everyone and their grandmother could play it. Which they do.

NanoMan88

Ok, the question I asked was "why did so many people come from other MMOs they had invested time into". There were many MMOs out before WoW. Search on Google or whatever since you don't seem to believe me. Not only that, but there were MMOs out around the same time as WoW and shortly after. Why didn't people move to those? I mean they wouldn't have invested a lot of time by then either. WoW was an immediate success.

Here's a quote I found on the web:

"World of Warcraft has sold-through an estimated 280,000* copies at retail on day-one, selling more units in one day than what was previously thought to be the overall cumulative size of the European MMORPG market. "

If you consider WoW's initial sales as bad, that only enforces the view that people saw how good the game was through reviews, media and word of mouth and decided to try it themselves. I don't even think there was a trial when it came out, yet it still rose in sales rapidly. WoW was never made less hardcore (if you're talking about PvE raiding) until probably the reduction of raid sizes, which wasn't for a good long time.

The Burning Crusade expansion broke PC game sales records for most copies sold in a 24 hour period. (this was before it was even out in China)

I said it already, WOW was more sucessful because the previous MMOs that were out very hardcore; as another user said; harsh penalties for dying, soloing attempted suicide etc. WOW made things more accesible; does this make it a better game? no. Also the sales dont really mean anything, Warhammer online had 750K preorders and look how that game turned out :D

You didn't say other MMOs were hardcore, you said WoW was "a very hardcore game". I didn't say sales mean anything (however they do), I posted the release day sales for the game because you said; "WOW wasnt sucessful immediatly..." The sales prove otherwise. This all brings me back to the question I asked a couple of times earlier; if people won't leave WoW for another MMO because of the time they invested into the game, why did so many leave other MMOs for WoW and also avoided playing other MMOs released close to WoW's debut. The point is, if a better MMO comes out, people will play it.

I understand what you're saying and I have the same view. Guild Wars has in-game lobbies. Nothing more.

Agree 100% So far I feel like GW2 is treading that middle ground, however I agree its stance on instancing could change that. Still the GW business model makes a strong initial player draw. A one time fee for an MMO is a much better price point for new players than "we're taking $15 a month for the rest of your life". So even if it doesn't get many permanent converts I think GW2 will sell rather well purely from the standpoint that alot of people will think it is worth the price to at least try it.

Guild wars 2 is a whole new game while cataclysm is an expantion to a full game, this discussion would make sense if gw2 was being compared with wow 2

Despite my obvious pessimism that ArenaNet can actually pull this off properly, I am really hoping they do. From the videos out of Games Con I am far more impressed with GW2 than I am with TOR and Cataclysm. I'm tired of going back to WoW after every expansion and then getting bored, I would really love something new. But other than WHO (which I'l be surprised if it lasts another 6 months) there has been nothing decent in the MMO space for quite some time. In my opinion GW2 has the most promise of any of the MMOs slated for release in the near future, I am just not sure that the devs are serious about eliminating most of the instanced areas and making it a true MMO

@Ragingbear505

When you act a little bit more respectfully, I'll respond to you.

[QUOTE="Vazsco"]Actually, it will be an MMO. The devs have stated that repeatedly, but also note that there will still be instancing, but for dungeon and storyline purposes. GW2 differs from GW1 in so many ways that the two themselves are hardly comparable, so it's not wise to judge the sequel based on its predecessor. All that being said, the game will still have no monthly fees, so it really isn't in direct competition with either Cataclysm or SWTOR anyway. WoW will still dominate, but I would expect GW2 to attract many players - both old and new to the MMO genre, and be successful. That's really all that matters.airshocker

Just because the developers say it's an MMO doesn't make it so. Just because I say I'm a woman, my male genitalia proves otherwise.

Unless I can play in a zone with more than a handful of players, it's not an MMO. It's an instanced multiplayer game much like Diablo.

arenanet have stated that battled in the mists will contain upwards of 100 players. i can't possibly know the future so i can't state whether that will really be the case, but i think its quite likely.Kh1ndjal

That sounds like a multiplayer PvP mode. I get things like that from non-MMOs.

I'm not here to brag or anything, but GW2 will feature a full persistant worlds whereas the main story and some dungeons will be instanced, if you actually read up on the site you'd know this, instead of the instanced world, they are going to make a persistant world that acts like an instanced world, which will be their dynamic event system, which also replaces the questing system. I hope that answers your questions (:

None of them will dominate. True winners are people who wont install any mmorpg because it's like smoking... very addicting.

This. GW is garbage as a MMO (for me), because it isn't, played it for a week, got extremely boring, I installed Diablo 2 again, played for a month and never looked back. GW 2 looks gorgeous, the art style, but I will never buy such a game if it's instanced, totally defies the very meaning of an MMORPG, even if there are certain open world events. If I want levels I'll get an actual RPG, on rails, that focuses entirely on short, intense, experience and story.

Guild Wars 2: "it is going to end the reign of World of Warcraft as the top MMO"

Its major advantage will be that its B2P.Now everyone(and i mean everyone) can afford a top MMO.

"this discussion would make sense if gw2 was being compared with wow 2" - since "wow 2" won't be coming for at least another century , its ok to compare the two :D

why are people being so ingorant? it has been stated alrdy on this thread that guild wars 2 is NOT going to be instanced, its going to be a completely diffrent game then GW1, is it so hard to read a little about it? or even look at ppl's posts on this thread? yet ppl are still being ingorant.

well like i said GW2 will be a completely diffrent game whith a new dynamic events system and a PERSISTENT world.

And to be on topic, i dont know what ppl see in wow, i tried the 10 day trial i got from buying sc2 and i found wow to be just unplayble, same as any other mmorpg just with rly bad graphics, but i geuss its 5-6 years old so ill forgive that, but still gw2 will hopefully blow away any mmo on the market

*whisper* Hey, uh...in case you haven't heard, it's not instanced. Just wanted to tell you that.

Anyway, I don't think GW2 is even looking to be a WoW killer. In fact, I think this discussion is pointless; which do you think will "dominate," whatever the hell that means?
