I'm sick of EAs and Microsoft's poor support for their games (specifically RTSs). Shortly after a sequal comes out, they stop updating the old version to force players to move on.

I used to be a big fan of the original Age of Empires Then Age of Empires 2 came out and Microsoft stopped updating the original. Eventually the original game became over run with exploiters because there were no patches released to combat the exploits. The same happened with Age of Empires 2 when Age of Empires 3 was released. They lost a customer in me when I recognized this pattern. I didn't buy Age of Empires 3 even though I like the series. I know it doesn't really matter anymore since Ensemble is gone, but still.

I never played Starcraft, but I will definetly be giving Starcraft 2 a try as I see Blizzard still issues patches for the old original version.

valve comes to mind... i have orange box and i must say the support is better than i expected (tf2 content updates, bug fixes, balance fixes) support for me was never a real deciding factor in purchasing games in the past, it has, however, become so much more important nowadays. it's one of the reasons why i stopped played FEAR combat (too many exploits) and why i didn't go for COD:WaW multiplayer. i guess blizzard do support their games over a looong period of time. i believe they removed the CD in the drive protection for both starcraft and warcraft3 a long time after release.

id Software and sometimes Epic. But no one as Blizzard. Even after 10 years Starcraft and Diablo II LOD are widely played today, and Warcraft III usually is 3rd in minutes played at day in Xfire historials just under WoW and COD 4.

You're forgetting the 3 heroes Blizzard added over the past couple years. L4D? Don't make me laugh. The game was very lacking in content for its price at release. People besides the fanboys would raise hell if Valve charged $ for this coming update. So no, Valve does not > Blizzard. Both are good at supporting their games, but Blizzard's got quite a few frequent haters around here.

On the level of Blizzard? Stardock, ISI and LiveforSpeed team

Aside from them the other companies who support their games nicely after release are Valve, TiltedMill, Egosoft, Shockwave, 2By3Games, Battlefront. 1C Maddox and Relic

Blizzard doesn't take anything, the earn it by producing good games that people willingly and enthusiastically pay for. Big difference, kid.

And for the topic, Valve of course comes to mind. Ascaron is another company that is known to add quite a bit after release (though they are also known to release buggy stuff that needed the fixing lol).

Tilted Mill has impressed me with how much they add, although they develop much smaller games.

Massive Entertainment does. At least 5 new maps for WiC had come out as long as tons of balancing patches and some preformace patches, despite the lacking community.

Such a shame.

Agreed, Blizzard is the best developer out there. And people only hate them because it's cool to hate WoW.

Even Blizzard isn't perfect. Selling expansion packs for an MMO with 10 million subscribers is just wrong. The money they make every month should be enough to release all of that and more as free updates.

CD Projekt impressed me with The Witcher. Existing Customers were given all the content in the EE as a free download. Many others would call it a $5-10 DLC.

How so? They charge for their games like everyone else. Their fee for WoW is just like every other pay to play MMO.... they support their games FAR longer than most other companies.

So how does he know what he's talking about?

So any popular MMO is wrong because look at the amount of expansions for Everquest. I don't see anything wrong with paying for expansions to MMOs, but i will not pay $15 a month for a whole year unless they make World of Starcraft. But honestly i would rather pay nothing a month and buy 2 expansions a year (it would be like $100 bucks cheaper. $15 for a year is $185 and normally expansions arn't even $50. Even 3 expansions a year would be better priced, but i would do it if they released expansion so quickly because instead of patching it would just be in the expansion...

But the fact is that we are already paying a monthly fee. How on Earth isn't $15 a month enough? It's been a long time since I last bought an MMO expansion pack and I'll probably never do it again. Only CCP seems to know how it's done.

Microsoft is the worst offender. Age of Empires 2 had thousands of players still playing when they shut it down. AoE2 would probably be a popular tournament game like Warcraft 3 still is if Microsoft had actually continued to maintain it.

_JaGuAr_LeaDeR
AOE2 was just awesome for Multiplayer. I was mad they dropped it. AOE3 didn't turnout to be anywhere near as good as AOE2.

Left4dead definately lacks a lot of content, I've even seen a fair amount of posts saying the same thing around here. There's not a lot of maps in the game, and there's a lack ofvariety in the weapons. TF2 is updated pretty well though, but it takes them a long long time just to release updates which only feature a few semi-different weapons.

As for Blizzard, most of the comments are just stupid. People don't realise that with more players it doesn't just bring them more income, but more servers and other resources are needed to accomodate them.Only people that can comment on what they take in anually are the people that work in their accounting department.

Egosoft. They are diligent with the patches and release additional content for free. They have the v2.0 patch for X3: Terran Conflict coming out in April that includes bug fixes, an additional plot line, a new ship and several new buyable stations. You can download this for free if you already have the game and they are also releasing it in the retail channel for the first time in North America. It's not at all uncommon to see a developer or Egosoft associate post in their forums. The have a DevNet section of their forum where if you sign up for Level 3 access you can have direct discussions with the devs as well as beta test the latest patch. If you want to sign an NDA you can get Level 5 access to get even more hands on. They have one of the most open game engines I've seen. You can create damn near anything you can think of with their script editor and the community has. The list of mods and scripts you can download for free to enhance your game is ridiculous. Pretty damn good for a small, niche market developer in my opinion.

There is no monthly fee for b.net, but they are discussing monetizing some features. Also, last time I checked Half Life 2's full story isn't included in one game...how's EPISODE 3 coming along? lol...

TF2 is still getting content releases... content that should have been incuded ON RELEASE DAY, not YEARS after release at their current rate. I still remember the pod cast interview before release stating that there would be no grenades except demoman and pyro (and pyro apparently got ganked) but they would have weapon unlocks to make up for it. So essentially these aren't content releases, they are just taking forever to fix their game by fixing one class every 8-9 months and breaking other stuff as a result.

Blizzard releases free content as well. Although it really only appeals to a very specific group of people that play the game, I'm one of them, but everyone can get into the new TF2 content easily, so I'd have to agree there.

HL2's full story is in the game. Have you ever heard of a sequel? I guess Starcraft's full story wasn't in the game because they are making Starcraft 2? Plus they aren't charging $50 for each episode so I don't see what you're going on about here. The episodes together are basically HL3 as said by Valve before. They are just releasing it in a different manner.

The fact is, HL2 is separated out into episodes, and Starcraft 2 will also see mutliple releases. Also, Blizzard said each "episode" will be full fledged campaigns with 20-30 missions, not 4 hour affairs (like HL2 episodes), which is why the price is higher. Personally I think what Valve offered is well worth the money, and based on Blizzards past games, Starcraft will also be worth the money. The point is, if you are going to criticize one company for splitting a game into pieces (or episodes), then the same criticism needs to be places on the other company.

totally. Why, if blizzard and valve didnt make good money in such ways, then we would'nt have good games to have with.

Personally , I think everyone will get over the fact that Starcraft 2 will be released in three trilogies because at the end of the day, they're gonna end up buying it and it's going to be worth it. Heck, the storyline might be so awesome, it'd make people want to buy the next 2 trilogies.

If a customer is happy for what he paid for, then it's a win-win for both sides. That's my definition of a good gaming company.

blizzards customer service is appauling. on d2 on bnet, i was banned for a reason unknown to me, (i never hacked or duped or anything, i dont know anything about that) and when i asked how long i was banned for they said its either a month or its permanent. just one small example of the numerous ecnoutners with blizzards support.

never buying blizz products again.

except d3.
