I really want to know why people dislike steam so much, while i seem to enjoy it. The fact that there are hundreds of games you can download, especially indies like darwania, and that there are all in one place, your games automatically download new patches etc, as a plus, i also dont have to put my card into more than one site. People complained way back when Half-Life 2 first came out and that you had to play through that, and you still get alot of people complaining, especially over Civ5 and the fact that you have to steam enable it.

Hopefully im not alone :|

After Monkey Island took up 2 days in the Lucas Arts Sale, I lost all faith in Steam.

Things doing exactly what they should do doesn't make the news or annoy people, and those people (usually the majority) have nothing to say. Things going wrong generally results in much vocalisation of opinion.

Valve doesn't set prices or set sales... It isn't like retail where Steam has X number of product and if it doesn't sell it goes on sale to move it... Steam has basically an infinite amount of everything and when they make a sale, they keep their cut and pass the rest to the publisher...

Publishers are the ones who decide when and which of their products go on sale...

Exactly... That is why everyone was under the assumption that all 360's got a RRoD... Because every thread everywhere on the internet about 360 for the first year or two were about the RRoD... Because those were the only people there... Its not like people who didn't get a RRoD were going to hop on their computer... "Hey guys, just thought I would make a thread and say that my 360 is working fine and no RRoD here! Have a great day!"

The fact you are complaining about a SALE speaks volumes to me, especially when its almost universally agreed that Steam has some of the best and most frequent sales around.

No i don't think so, im fairly certain Steam decides for themselves what to charge for their games, the publishers doesn't care one bit, as Steam has already paid them for the serial keys for each game

Most people who complain about Steam are

1) Spoiled brats. An example of that would be gamers who complain about sales.

2) People who don't understand how to use Steam so they make threads complaining how it is a rip off. Meanwhile if they had of bothered to do any research at all (Google) then the solution their problem would have been solved.

3) Trolls who obviously haven't used Steam and have nothing better to do then make people angry over the net.

Steam is a great service. All my games, including non Steam games, are all in one spot. Amazing sales every week. Plus they update my games and graphic card drivers. Yea I am a happy customer.

Steam is really an incredible system. It functions as non intrusive DRM, a gaming social client, and a game library all at the same time. Generally speaking, I love it. However I do worry that there are no realy strong competitors out there to steam. I think such competition would be healthy for PC gaming.

There were 5 days in the lucasarts sale, it took up one, it just didn't end until the weekend was over, like always. Regardless of that fact, are you telling me that you seriously don't understand what opinions and preferences are? And you're old enough to use a keyboard?

Wrong. It lasted all week. Stupid Monkey Island Ebola Adventure took up 2 out of 7 days. Those 2 days could have gone to good Star Wars Games.

A lot of people have legitimate technical or service-related issues with Steam, or they live in countries where the prices aren't adjusted fairly. And I really feel for those people, because my experience with Steam here in the States for the past seven years has been almost nothing but positive. I wish the quality of the experience was the same for everyone.

But then, there are also a lot of people out there with a hyperinflated sense of entitlement, who sate themselves by complaining that something sucks or isn't fair unless it works exactly the way they expect it should. These are the people who tend to screw themselves over by not bothering to read the fine print before making a purchase, or who blow up over the slightest technical issues because they're too precious and self-important to spend four minutes reading the manual or checking forums for a solution. Those people are just haters.

Speaking of which...

How many more posts are you going to make whining about this? Do you have a goal? Some kind of quota? I can't believe it isn't abundantly clear to you by now that nobody else here agrees with your negative "opinion" of Monkey Island, a game which you've never even played. You aren't winning points with anyone by pushing the issue, so just give it a rest already.

I use Steam occasionally for good deals on games that may not be available elsewhere or for buying online only games- occasionally I will buy a game if I don't care that I have the box. Its convenient and easy to use.

I dislike the DRM and the inflated prices of some of the games (particularly new releases) and the fact that I cannot loan my games to friends/family and cannot resell my games. I am also abit paranoid about losing my games due to someone hacking my account/ the service being shut down/ aliens invading and destroying the Valve servers/ etc.

I prefer a physical copy.

...Because different people have different opinions? Doesn't make them automatically "Trolls" or "Haters" or whatever label you want to put on em, it makes them people with opinions... just like y'alls opinions that Steam is awesome. The idea that "Steam rules" or that Steam can't fail to be good is no different that the idea that Steam isn't good. Both sides are opinions and are 100% valid to the person presenting them. Once you start saying that people Anti-Steam "suck" or whatever, then you become what you are labeling (eg whining self entitled people [note, this is not pointed at any one person directly]). Believe it or not there are billions of people in the world, tons have internet access... and not everyone thinks that Steam is a "Gift from the Gods". [On a personal note, I find Steam to be a good digital distribution service - I am not thrilled at its method of enforcing DRM [a resident launcher that has to be running to launch any steam protected game and gives some people issues when trying to do their "offline" mode doohicky], but the service itself isn't horrible. I do prefer other Digital Distribution services for most of my games though - I am not paranoid about DRM and I like being able to launch a game w/o steam running in the background

I actually enjoy playing Mario 64, and most other N64 and Dreamcast games for that matter. I also love most games for GameCube. Monkey Island is a point and click game equivalent to a DVD menu game. In my opinion, its a bucket filled to the brim with highly concentrated garbage juice, posed upon a half-opened door, ready to fall. I refuse to ever walk through that door ever again.

I just can't stand that it took up TWO DAYS on Lucas Arts week. TWO WHOLE DAYS! NO GAME, no matter how AWESOME, needs two days. I would not classify monkey island as deserving two days. anyways @ topic: I love steam, use it daily. Love it. I get amazing dload speeds. I can get a game from steam faster than installing from disc. Hard copies are breakable, steam is forever. Also, uberpunage and I are not the same person. We are online at the same time and we have different IPs. That's a hard act for one person to orchestrate.

In my opinion, its a bucket filled to the brim with highly concentrated garbage juice, posed upon a half-opened door, ready to fall. I refuse to ever walk through that door ever again.

Well, again, the game came out over 10 years ago. Back then, gaming hadnt evolved yet, so you have to understand the standards of back then. And BTW, just because steam didnt sell ONE game you didnt want, it doesnt mean you rip on steam.

I never ripped on Steam. I love Steam. But, I dislike Monkey Island. That should be fairly obvious. And I don't care about the standards back then; It still costs the same as Half Life 2!

I think uberpunage is ripping on Monkey island, NOT steam. I don't know many people who dislike steam. Mostly they just prefer consoles or prefer hard copies, it's not that steam is inherently bad, it's just something else is better in their opinion.

Oh yea, and just because I dislike ONE game you like, doesn't mean you rip on me.

Steam to me is amazing.. But I can see one huge HUGE complaint about it.. And that is the poor Europeans that get immensely inflated costs for games..

That was the sale item that finally got me to get into Steam. The Monkey Island sale was amazing because the games are amazing.

People who despise Steam are either:

1. Have a slow internet connection/ aka Living in a 3rd world country.

OR

2, Ignorant.

There is NOTHING wrong with steam.

If its downloading slow, its cause of YOUR connection OR the SERVERS are OVERLOADED.

Don't expect a game thats on sale to download 1mb+ a second.

The fact you are complaining about a SALE speaks volumes to me, especially when its almost universally agreed that Steam has some of the best and most frequent sales around.

why Does it matter that there is a sale if the game isn't worth buying? And especially since that sale took the place of 2 other sales that could've been on 2 different days?

It was worth buying and I bought it. Alot of people bought it. Stop complaining like you speak for everyone.

Well that was pointless to say. Alot of people in the USA have access to only slow internet due to living in rural areas. High speed internet is not all over the country yet. Alot of companies also put caps on how much you can download in a month. Some countries such as Australia from what I have heard have very tight caps on that but it could just be a certain company out there for all I know. Saying anyone who has a slow net connection must live in a 3rd world country is just ignorant

If you can afford a gaming PC I think you should be able to have a decent connection. Besides are was exagerating, I was being serriously about the 3rd world part.

Wow, that was the most useless triple posting I've ever seen. You do that a lot too. You love to double post to increase post count, like it means something. Learn to used the edit button. Please. Anyways, I'm not uberpunage, think what you want, but I'm not. L2bdetectives. Steam is bad for people with.... satellite internet.... maybe.

Where I live the only option is satellite internet. No amount of money will fix that. I live in Nevada btw

Double post would mean that I had the same exact post twice in a row. Regardless you can pretend you know me all you want doesn't make what I said any less true :)

Hard to not recognize your avatar. Double post is two posts in a row.... /facepalm ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_forum#Double_posting ) Although what you said is also a double post, posting two messages that could have been edited together is also a double post. That's two pretty popular sources (it wont let me psot my urban dictionary link, but you can google double post and get to it). I don't know you at all, but you double post too much.

Because people are cool and edgy if they dislike something that actually works well and provides an excellent service.

...Because different people have different opinions? I do prefer other Digital Distribution services for most of my games though - I am not paranoid about DRM and I like being able to launch a game w/o steam running in the background carlosjuero
well said and a nice break from the endless " OMG i love steam and anyone who says anything negative about it sucks" kind of mentality that seems to dominate these forums.
